Thanks for your contact, Itamar, and for your effort.
If it is any use, I have a message which would interest, or be a warning to, Mac users. It is that TomTom CityMaps cannot be installed on the Psion (5mx or 7) from a Macintosh computer. The use of Windows and PsiWin is absolutely necessary. I was dismayed to find this - confirmed in no uncertain terms by TomTom - and have been obliged to resort to a friend's computer. A great pity, as CityMaps is a great program. Route Planner is great also, and is, by contrast, simple to download to a Mac and install on the Psion.

Obvious things first - have you set "Tools" "Find By label" to include the categories you wish to search?

Currently Toshiba 2GB PCMCIA HDD are really cheap (£80). I tested one in my series 7 but couldn't get it to register as drive E at all. Anyone have any explanation as it's not meant to require drivers. Does it require too much power from the motherboard? I am hoping to upgrade shortly to a Netbook - would this be able to handle this memory device? Or is the microdrive the only large scale memory option Psion has?
Darryl
Back from a round the world trip and very grateful to Itamar for keeping the Digest going.

Over £1500 of free Psion and Palm prizes being given away at the big PDA User Group meeting in London, on Friday, May 31st!
Add in unlimited free drinks for the first hour or so and the chance to network with other PDA users and developers and you might want to make this event a date in your Date Book/Agenda...
Sponsors of the event (so far) are RMR Software, Zenobyte, iambic, Finger Technology and PMN, but we'd like still more companies to get involved/publicised - can /your/ company help?
There are a huge number of Palm, Psion and PDA prizes, all of which must be given away, so make sure you bring your business card!
See the meeting page at http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/meetings.htm
for venue information (near Paddington Station) and for
full door prize details - their total value exceeds £1500!
Incidentally, if /you/ have any unwanted units, accessories
or software, feel free to bring them along and donate them
to the prize table so that at least someone else can benefit
from it...
Like previous gatherings in the London venue, the event is free
and open to people of all PDA-persuasions, although the
majority are expected to own Palm OS or Psion/Symbian handhelds/communicators. There will be a central prize-giving, surrounded by good chat, expert advice and an opportunity
to meet dealers and developers. And, of course, to make some
new friends and contacts.
A short (10 mins max) keynote speech will be given by someone prominent in the industry, details on the web site nearer the time.
Again, for full details on the event, please see

I've just tried to send a mail from my "home" account to my "office" account, sending it via PC & Popcorn and receiving it on my MC218 & Ericsson T39, and all seems fine, sender, subject, date etc. are correctly displayed...

Try to install the Mobile Connectivity Update 2.0 on the MC218 or 5mx (175 Kb):

It seems that with the old versions of the T39 firmware this update wasn't necessary, but with the new ones you need it to work with GPRS.

Hi Nishy,
I experienced the same problem last Autumn using PsiWin and my Ericsson MC218. After clicking on "OK" I could start the backup process again, and everything went fine. I posted my problem to the German Psion list (Psion-DE at YahooGroups) but nobody seemed to experience the same error message.
The downside of the problem followed this April when the screen cable of the MC218 broke and I had to send it in for repair. I did a complete backup (getting the error message again), and when I got the MC218 back and started the complete restore, PsiWin reported a duration time of 2,5 hours and about 26 MB of data to be restored to the internal disk!
I finally found out that due to the PsiWin error the archive process had failed, and a lot of old (and already deleted) files were still in the backup folder on my PC. This wasn't so much of a problem with word or sheet files, but the message suite was pretty unusable (18 MB of data which wouldn't fit on the internal disk). The conclusion was: start the message suite from scratch (losing some unread mails) and manually sort out all the word and sheet files.
I finally removed PsiWin and installed EPOCConnect (which came on the CD with my MC218). At the moment everything is working fine - and the programm even recognizes my girlfriend's Revo.
Hope this helps a bit. I'm sorry that I have no solution to the source of the problem.

Flashback can be set to close and reopen programs, but I did get some problems using it this way. (In particular it had problems closing / reopening Mentor. I tried emailing both authors to resolve this, but with no success.) But, as I said, I stopped using the automatic timed options, as I got fed up with being prompted when it wasn't convenient to back
up. I now use Startup to stop and start programs before / after using Flashback, and just have Flashback to close (but not reopen) programs, just to be SURE everything's closed. (Besides, I don't want to reopen programs straight away, because I want to copy files from the CF to the PC first.
I didn't know that JBStopGo has a backup function though.

Subject: Psion Series 5, New phone, Unable to search,
Answer to: David Richardson
Re. Psion Series 5 - A difficult question, as you will surely know that Psion has stopped making and developing PDA's. If you are convinced you want to continue to use an EPOC machine for the foreseeable future, I would advise you to buy a 5MX while they are still available. If you don't need the pocket size, a S7 or Netbook might be even better (but more expensive), the Netbook not (yet) discontinued. The Revo is more pocketable, but has no expansion possibilities and many people complain about battery problems with the internal rechargeable battery pack. If EPOC is not that important to you, look at other makes as well.
Answer to: Gary Y. Reyes
Re. New phone - Thanks. I think I'll wait for the new Nokia 8910. It looks like a good phone, I like it to be bigger, it has a cover of the keys, and is bluetooth. This means you can have it in your briefcase in the car and still use it with the car unit. I saw someone with the Motorola V70, it is too small for me and too unclear to read.
Answer to: Paul Harrison
Re. Unable to search addressbook - Under Tools and Find by label did you specify which labels to search in ?
Answer to: Philip S. Adkins Potter
Re. Future of digest - Ok, some figures for your information:
- adding a subscriber : 5 seconds (a macro)
- unsubscribe someone : 20 seconds {by hand)
- adding message to the digest : 25 seconds (macro) **
- preparing digest for sending : less than 5 minutes
- sending of digest : abt. 1-1/2 minutes
** = can be improved to 10 to 15 seconds by improving the macro.
The main time has gone to preparing a list of some 1,000 names to send an email. I have now sent abt. 2/3 of that list in two messages, last one hopefully over the week-end. I've sent a message to Palmtop Magazine and hope they will publish it. In the heading of the digest I added the total number of subscribers, currently just over 200.
As to the future, as said before let's wait a month or so. My personal feeling is that James gave us the ups5digest for years for free and merrits our loyalty while sorting matters out. If by the end of June the ups5digest has not returned we will discuss the future. Trust you will all agree with this.

Re. Other PDA's - I will not censor any messages and you are free to write. However, in general this is - like the ups5 digest - a digest about EPOC machines and personally I would not like it to change into a general PDA digest, losing it's caracter of Psion orientated contents to the vast majority of other PDA's. I am pretty sure other digests already exist for that subject ?

Re. BCC field - a subscriber informed me that he received the last digest with all the email addresses showing in the BCC field. Several tests between him, a third person and myself has not shown how this is possible. Did anyone else receive the digest with all addresses showing ? If so, please inform me with the software used to download the email.

Paul,
You've probably checked this already but just in case . . .
in the Tools menu, Find by label - you need to tick all the fields you want to search in. It may be that none of them are ticked.

To Itamar,
Re: Flashy phones
The problem with flash new phones is that they often have glitches and you generally have to work out the issues for yourself with regards to Psion connectivity . . . but I've never let that put me off ;-)
In general Motorola phones seem to work well but aren't the most user friendly. I had a Timeport for quite a while (it was the first Triband phone with a modem) which didn't let me down, it was just a bit fiddly to use, but worked quite well the Psion.
Currently I have an Ericsson T39 which, is similar to the flashier T68 colour screen phone, but has a flip. It is easy to use and works extremely well with my S5. I like flip phones as the keypad is kept covered avoiding accidental phone calls (yes, I know you can lock most keypads but I always forget and nobody makes a phone that does it automatically).
Nokia phones are probably the easiest to use, but I've never used one with a Psion, so can't comment. (However, the Nokia I use for work has a really annoying feature that dials 999 when you lock the keypad!)
Hope the above helps !
Regards,
Jason

I too subscribe to a list on Yahoo groups and while it has been generally OK I do subscribe to the digest form which reduces the chance of viruses. Also, a few weeks ago we were informed, not by Yahoo, that our prferences as to receiving email and phone offers had been changed to "Yes" even if we had not originally checked that option off in our preferences. So I make it a habit every month or so to make sure my spam factor is the way I wish it.
By the way, I find it amazing that Itamar can run this list on his 5mx! Thanks Itamar.

To Itamar,
First again thanks for your effors, without which we would not have the Digest. We are all in your debt!!!
I downloaded the Hebread program, but now where can one get texts to use with it? Any ideas?
Another question perhaps someone can help with. I seem to recall that the 5mx allows you to disable all alarms. The other day the alarm on my spare 5mx went off. This could have drained the batteries, but my memory fails me as to how to disable all alarms (I need an upgrade...). Will be grateful for a reminder.

Welcome back to the clan. If you use your psion for anything taxing (like street or routeplanner, opening lots of programs at the same time etc) then you should definately upgrade to the MC218 or 5mx. They are noticeably faster and the extra memory really helps. I was really happy when I upgraded mine. If you don't, you are probably fine with what you have got and maybe a compact flash card (which are amazingly cheap now) if you want to store a lot of files or programs. You can pick up 5mx's cheap, too - someone here will tell you the best price new but you should be able to find one second hand for £100-£120 or so and £200 from Johnlewis.com.
The revo/mako sounds like a real dog to me - terrible battery problems. But if you want something small, go for it. I wouldn't mind one as a companion for the big brother 5mx for occassional use, but I wouldn't rely on it.

Subject: Epoc Digest, Lotus Notes synching problems
Dear Psioneers (Itamar in particular)
One potential problem with using a system such as Yahoo! groups is the fear that our email addresses gets out and that spam becomes a problem. Any web based system can potentially have this problem, therefore I think we stick to a mail based system, even if we have to pay for it. May I suggest the following options:
A) We find a reliable online service, and split the bill between a few of the major contributors. I know I, as a University student, would not mind contributing R100 to R200 a year towards this digest - that's nothing compared to what I spend on magazines, and this is much more useful. That amounts to about 2% of my yearly pocket money and part time incomes - surely a few others would not mind contributing there 2% or even 1% ? (I'm sure most earn what I do in a year in a month!) I do not know the exact cost, but I'm sure it is not outrageous, and we could possibly get it cheaper by using a service based in a country that has been hit hard by the combo of the strong dollar/pound - eg South Africa.
B) In my opinion an even better option is the following - a php based 'digest system' that we could host on a server, potentially in combination with a remailer system. I could potentially host such a system on my personal server (good bandwidth and php capable) till Jan next year for free, and then either it could be tacked onto another server (perhaps a business or personal web server of a digestee, or some Psion related company that could use the exposure?). This way the system is totally portable from server to server (assuming it is PHP based). The only thing people would have to do if we ever moved would be to send to a different address - which would not be a problem, as most would notice if the digest started arriving from a different address. And if we used a remailer - then any future move would be totally transparent to the user (unless the remailer company goes under).
Just my ten C's worth. Don't know if such software exists written in PHP, I know it is possible.
Secondly - my friend has a prob. Synching his revo with Lotus Notes, he gets double entries from notes to the revo, and entries on the revo do not get created on notes - what could be the problem? I think he's using a combination of PsiWin and InSync pro.
Thanks in advance
Paul J

Have you tried:
Menu/Tools/Find by Label/ then tick off all fields you wish recognized in the search. The fewer ticked off the faster the search.
I have all fields ticked off and find the search function extremely fast despite all being selected.
I use Data for all my databases and use Contacts only for email addresses. This allows me to have many separate data files and allows for easy backward compatibility from my 5mx and Makos to my classic 5.
