Subject: Production of 5mx has started again!

Hello Digest,

The Dutch web site www.symbian.info (of the Benelux Symbian User Society) has reported that it has received a rumour from 'reliable sources' that the 5mx is back into production.

The 5mx is outsourced to an eastern company, but that has already been the case before the first production stop. The reason for the relaunch is that the demand for the 5mx is still stable, while the stock is being exhausted quicker than expected. It is not quite clear which part of Psion will retake responsibility for the device, but as I see it it would be logical that Psion Teklogix takes over the 5mx, as it is vastly popular for business use.

It is also not clear how vendors can obtain new stock and -as a result- how and if consumers can buy the device.

The rumour has not been officially confirmed yet, but I myself already find this great news. Finally, Psion has seen that the 5mx nowadays still is a great device for people who want to be productive, who need the keyboard and who do not need all modern 'multimedia'.

By the way: I had a Netpad in my hand last Saturday. It really is a 5mx with a colour screen and without the keyboard, though it has a much sturdier protection around it! I really like the colour, but I loathe the lack of a keyboard! It is utterly unusable without the keyboard. The onscreen keyboard is always on top of other things, making those other things invisible! What good is Word if you do not have a keyboard?

Yours truly,

Thomas VAN DER ZIJDEN

Hello all,

Shortly after I sent off my long-winded posting on connecting a 5mx to a Motorola 280 via script a couple of days ago, I found the excellent files on www.mikemcc.net detailing GPRS phone settings which Mike pointed out in today's digest. A brilliant resource - thanks, Mike.

Kevin,

Thanks a lot for the information.  I will try this out.  It should work on the 8310 also.

One question: would you know how to check either on the phone or on the Revo what the connected baud rate is?  Any way to verify if you are connected on HSCSD?

Thanks,

Gary

Gunter,

Coincidence that just this morning, I got the same when trying to backup my Revo Plus.

What I did was to go to the file the Revo claiming was open -- in this case my Agenda -- then actually opened the file then closed it. Then clicked on the PC to continue with the backup.

Seemed to solve the problem.  After my backup, I hard-reset my Revo because of some battery problems then restored all the files.  Does not look like I lost anything.

Hope this helps.

Greetings!

I too receive the digests with the list of subscribers plainly visible in the BCC field. (All the messages so far...)

I'm using the EPOC Email program v2.00 (518) on my netBook to read the digest. (Still running the FUBAR 158 version)

----

The FUBAR ROM...

A Psion employee actually contacted me about certain issues in this ROM!

(Because of a post I did on news. Comp.Sys.Psion something)

Yes, really!

They're working VERY HARD to try and fix the bugs that crept into the release, and hope to have a new one ready soon...

Incidentally, he also told me that the German version was OK...

(Or maybe the German users have given up and not reported any bugs...)

Answer to: Nishy

Re. Backing up problem - Is it possible that the name of the file that gives the problem exists also on your PC, either as a file or a folder ? I seem to vaguely remember that this might give problems with backing up.

Answer to: Julie Wills

Re. JB5StopGo - No, it does not have a "back up function". The program will close any programs open at the moment of activating the program and switch on the link. Activating it again will switch off the link and open again all the programs it closed. Start-up will only open a list of pre-programmed programs, but not any that was open at that moment. The author is John Boyce, and he helped me very well when I found out his program did not close and open Merlin properly, and now it does. He is still around and will help anyone with problems, even though he himself now uses mainly a Palm ... (how sad).

Answer to: Moshe Nahir

Re. Hebread - Look in the help file and the following websites are mentioned :

http://www.palmsiddur.com; http://www.pilotyid.com; http://www.penticon.com; http://www.palmshiur.com

These will probably lead you to others too, but all the files I mentioned you can find on these websites. Look for the DOC files and .pdb files. Don't register yet the files, as the registered ones will not work yet on the program.

Re. Alarms - In the World file you can switch the sound off, as well as in the control panel under sound.

Answer to: Ettore

Re. GPRS - Look on the website of Mike McConnell at "http:www.mikemcc.net" where you will find several files describing all the settings.

I also found that I could enable them, but when I got back to the security dialog, the checkmarks were gone again....

I think I remember mailing the Opera support on this and receiving the answer that this was a misprogramming and that the two protocols in fact were active despite the fact that the tics were gone.

Maybe someone else can verify this my hunch? (Have uninstalled Opera, found it too buggish, memoryhungry and not competent enough to handle my Internet bank or office webmail interfaces.Neither can of course Web or Internet as it is called on my MC218.)

Subject: It' not your fault that the BCC field is showing!

Itamar,

I don't know why this is happening but it is probably a Freeserve fault. Since it affects some and not others and it doesn't result in me getting double mails I think it must be Freeserve! They seem to have a good reputation so I imagine they want to be told about this. I would if it were my service and I was in customer care.

You are doing everything right if even a percentage of subscribers are not receiving the BCC field addresses. You could only be causing this yourself if it affected most if not all of us and that is patently untrue. Fortunately this is a very sensible group so the distribution of addresses won't be abused.

A friend got my new (old) Mac working so as soon as I understand it and get a low table for the keyboard and everything I'll try that but I don't think it'll change anything.

I have two other eMail accounts so if you want to try sending the digest to  them you're welcome. Please tell me so I'll look every day.

They are and .

I still think it's down to Freeserve though.

Good luck,

Phil.

Subject: BCC field and sending to large no. of recipients

To: All

Abt. 10 people reported back to me they received the digest with all the recipients showing in the BCC field, one person actually reported that the first 5 he received like that but no. 6 was clean. I sent the digest to myself and received it clean on my Psion. Some could see all the addresses in the BCC field, others notin the field bt only in the "view" and "options" of Outlook.

I had another problem yesterday. I tried to send the digest out to 230 email addresses and it failed on me both with Demon Internet and with Freeserve. When however I divided the message in two, one to 200 and one to 30 addresses, both went out. All the people that could see the BCC fields were from the message to the 200 addresses.

It would appear this means that there is a bug in the Psion email software where above a certain number of blind copies the blind copies function does not work to all, but only to some, and that one cannot send an email to more than 200 recipients.

I created a new file with all the email addresses without the names and wilI check if that makes a difference first. If not, I will send the next digest after that out via my PC and Outlook. With the next two digests only I request you kindly again that if you can see the other recipients to send me an email (but not if you can't see them, please).

If there is anyone that has a problem with his address shown to the other subscribers, let me know and I'll try and avoid your address from being shown.

Finally, if anyone can shed a light on this or has any knowledge what might cause it or how to solve it, please enlighten us.

Bye,

Itamar

PS: Please send to the digest email address ONLY messages to appear in the digest and (un)subbscribe messages, and all other messages I think I deleted one or two messages about this subject that I thought were for me privately, but might have been for the digest, for which my sincere excuses. It is not my intention to censor any messages.

Dear Fellow Digesters,

I suspect Darryl's problem of running his new 2GB PCMCIA HDD on his S7 is attributable to insufficient power. I have an IBM Microdrive which works perfectly in the CF card slot of my S7 but when used with an adapter in the PCMCIA slot it is not recognised. I the original UPSDigest a year or so ago a contributor said that the same problem did not apply to NetBook.  Hope this helps. I hope another digester can prove me wrong so that I can rush out and snap up this bargain PCMCIA HDD!

Subject: BCC / Value of Differing Psion models

Hi all

Firstly I want to join the rest of you in thanking Itamar for grasping the nettle and running this in the temporary (?) absence of James.

When I look in the message properties of the Epoc Digest I can see all of the BCCs. I am using MS Outlook Express 5.5 at the moment.

The Revo/Mako has had a bit of a slating recently so I thought that now might be the time to tell you what I am using at the moment. I am down to a netBook, MC218, Mako and a Handspring Visor Deluxe.

The netBook is used every day. The Mako is a toy which I use when I want pocketability. The MC218 sits in my safe and is there for the day when the netBook dies or has to be sent away. The Visor is a toy with which I demonstrate the GPS unit that plugs into it's springboard slot.

The important thing to remember with the Mako/Revo is to keep the batteries charged (by whatever routine you decide is best). My MC 218 comes out of the safe about every 8 weeks for a fresh set of batteries.

There is an irony that so many complained about the reflectiveness of the 5/5mx screen. This was put down to the technology needed to provide the lighting to the screen. People liked the scotchlite materials used in the Revo/Mako screen, but I now hear complaints about no backlight on the device.

I believe that these devices have still got a long way to go before they will reach their optimum functionality. Look at what PCs can do these days. It wont be long before handheld PCs can do the same and more, with hopefully less crashes!

Hi All,

Well the CF is sorted, many thanks to Mike, Martin & Michael. I had formatted it into Fat 32, this is the default XP action. However there is an option for Fat. I thought I had tried it before but it hadn't worked but this time it did. Yippee! I then formatted it with EDU as per Martin Guthrie's page. So now to do a restore.

Next problem does PiBeam work with the S7? I tried to install it twice from the Control panel and I get a blank screen which needs a reset to get the 7 going again. I then removed Pibeam. It is fine with the 218. Should I have an IR update for the 7 (it is build 758).

I have finally come upon a MC218 and I will be putting my Series 5 to "rest" as a back up machine only for emergencies. I wanted to know what is the best way to store the machine in terms of the batteries.

I have removed the AA batteries but I kept the backup battery in place. Is there any value in doing this or should I also remove the backup battery? I have backed up all of the information already.

Also if anyone is interested in purchasing a DI27 or DI28 Ericsson modem please contact me off the list.

This could have drained the batteries, but my memory fails me as to how to disable all alarms (I need an upgrade...). Will be grateful for a reminder.

There are two ways:

- One way is to disable alarm sounds in control panel. This does not

prevent the machine to turn on (my netBook flashes a red LED then).

- The other way is to simply exit Agenda. This way, no new alarms will

be sent to the alarm server.

I just found tho following on the Psion-DE list in Yahoo:

Its an alarm manger that controls how often an alarm can ring (and

more).

Well UPS5'ers,

I thought the day would never come. As I have said in the past I wasn't going to give up easily on this one. Thanks to this digest and those who contribute I have finally fixed my problem. The solution? Follow the setup information in this web site:

http://www.maehrlein.rmc.de/Deutsch/Psion/S25/index.html#Modem. It's in German and the English part of his site doesn't have the equivalent info, so I'm afraid you'll just have to translate (not too difficult). There are 2 key parts to what is contained here:

1) Use "AT&F0X3\Q0" as the "Init reset string" under modems-initialisation in control panel. I checked out the meaning of the AT commands and as far as I can make out they mean: AT&F0(= restore to factory settings)X3(=Detect Busy signal)\(=Haven't a clue)Q0(=Status display on). Can any comms gurus explain why these settings allow emails greater than 4K to be sent without the application timing out when they could be happily RECEIVED with the standard ATZ init string?

2) Set the "modem type" to "Fixed Line" in modems-advanced in control panel. This didn't appear to have any effect on my problem, but as far as I know this will allow the S25/MX combination to send and receive faxs - I haven't been that ambitious yet!

If anybody in interested in more info - use the "search" facility in www.deja.com and look for S25 - there is lots of info there. I found the above in comp.sys.psion.comm.

And now I have to thank those who have helped me:

Mike McConnell, Eamonn O Cathain, Philipp Maier, Crawford Patterson, Sebastian Hotte Homann (SHH), Clive Riches, Steve Schokman, John McAleely, Achim Hartig and probably many more. I would also like to thank my parents for having me, Mr Potter for making these wonderful machines ... On a more serious note, this exercise proves the value in a list like this. In simple terms, if everybody contributes to the list, everybody benefits. And when I say contribute, I don't include all the bitching and sniping that so very often takes place. Now if all you flamers will excuse me: YIPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE !!!
