Subject: RE: File Open on Backup
I have a similar backup problem with Locker. Even when I think it is closed
(by using the "open files" list in System), the backup utility will not back
it up because it thinks it is open. I recently had to do a new backup of my
entire 5mx C drive (new hard drive on office computer), and had to manually
close Locker (by bringing it up and then closing it) even though it was not
showing on the open files list. Then PsiWin 2.3.3 was able to do the entire
backup. In future backups, I will just skip the backup of Locker because I
can always reload the program in the future if it is lost.
I hope the rumor about 5mx production resuming is true. I still get lots of
PDA envy when I'm out and about, and now I can say that it might actually
continue to be available.

Subject: NETBOOK ROM / PRODUCTION OF 5MX
Hi Guys,
For Trygve and others re netBook ROM:
It's all very well for Psion to debug build 158 but are they going to debug
Opera as well? Unless they do I'll stick with 156, with Web to do most of my
browsing. Maybe we should offer OUR services as beta testers this time.
By the way Trygve, I assume that you still haven't found your 156. If you're
really desperate, and patient, I could e-mail you the zipped version.
For Thomas re resumed production of the 5mx:
Great news, if it's confirmed. I don't suppose that we could hope that they
will do a quick re-design to include a colour screen and mil spec hinges and
screen cable?

Hi,
Could any kind soul send me the original 156 .img file for the netBook; I
have unfortunately installed 158 and cannot re-install my files and folders
as a result. Worse, I no longer appear to have kept a copy of 156, to my

Only if it's not too much trouble, etc.,

To Toby Butler and all
I can't compare CityMaps with Street Planner because I haven't seen S P.
CityMaps however is very clear and easy to use. It contains (they say) maps
of 100,000 cities, towns & villages throughout Europe and the U.K. - though
the map for each must be installed separately, and London, for instance, has
3 or 4 different versions according to the amount of memory you want to use.
I recently installed on my S7 (by courtesy - £35 worth - of POS) 2 cities
from each of Switzerland and Italy, and several in England (not including
London, as an A-Z is all I need there, if that) from Southampton to Leeds
and Norwich. These used quite a few megabytes of memory. I tried then to
copy the installation to my 5mx, but was told that I must re-install the
program from the CD: fat chance, in the absence of a PC - and when
travelling I don't even have a Mac!
On the TomTom web site is a complete list of all the towns; I must say it is
pretty impressive.

Subject: Responses to Revo+ Backing Up Problem
Dear Gunter (and Christopher, Itamar, and Gary),
Gunter, thanks for your long response (and greetings from someone who lives
partly in Klosterneuburg, Wien!).
Yesterday I did what Christopher has suggested today, namely soft resetting
my Revo Plus (pressing "1" pinhole at the back) and my backing up problem
vanished (and all data remained safe)! Itamar, your comment of perhaps the
same file being open on the PC could not be verified because the error
statement from PsiWin simply does not name any file, nor does my Revo show
up an offending file being open.
Perhaps anyone encountering this backing up problem might try a soft reset.
Re. GPRS and Ericsson R520 m in Sri Lanka, I might add to anyone interested
that my Revo + works flawlessly for email with this phone and I did not
make any changes of any sort on my Revo or the phone to get things working,
which is a pleasant change.
Thanks for all the feedback !

thanks for the news
"In addition I have a good news for NetBook and S7 users:
RepEvMail is now coloured. Thanks to Egon Widfor his painting job."
As soon as I'm back home, I will try it. Please Egon, send me the

My query for the day
I have 3 mailboxes and ordinarily, if I connect to one, I can access the
other two without any problem. But when abroad, if I connect to one (say
attglobal) and try to access another (say wanadoo), I immediately get a
message that states
"Not Ready"
I stay "connected", am able to re-open attglobal, but cannot open any of the
other two
this never happens if I am in my "country of origin"
When abroad, it happens whether or not I bother to change all the settings
concerning "Place", a tiresome task BTW.
any explanation? remedy?

Subject: Unable to search addressbook; Extras bar macro
Hi all
First a big thanks to Itamar for keeping us going and co-ordinating the
unofficial UPS5D [UUPS5D - is that UUencoded!?] resurrection!
• Unable to search addressbook
>Paul Harrison wrote:
>I have my addressbook on my 5mx as a Data file...
>Major problem: I cannot search for anything.
I use data files as address books (one work and 1 home) - they work
brilliantly for me. Have you set the fields to be searched using the
"Tools->Find by" menu? Tick all the fields then try again!
• Extras bar macro
I like to keep a variety of apps in specific places on my Extras bar. After
a long time thinking about it (and many increasingly frustrating machine
changes and hard resets, for various reasons!), I have finally got round to
writing a macro to set up the Extras bar just as I like it. I have also
written a version which is set up as a blank template for individual
customization to set up apps on any (or all) of the positions on the Extras
bar. Would this be of use to others? If so, let me know where (and how!)
to upload it, and I will make it available (and its help file explaining how
to set it up).
Bye for now

Moshe,
Marcus recommended you try AlarmPlus and it's a great utility IF you don't
have PsiLoc+ installed. If you do it doesn't work properly. As I do have
PsiLoc+ I deleted AlarmPlus a while ago so I can't remember the exact fault
but it rendered AlarmPlus pretty useless for me.
The trouble is that they both operate at a very low system level and the
system doesn't appear to like them both trying to access the alarm server.
If there is a fault I think it is possibly with AlarmPlus but it is more
likely the OS not allowing the two utilities to co-operate.
Take care,
Phil.

Re. Production 5MX - The result of the voting in Germany, leading on from
the symbian.info website, is even more amazing. Visitors to an exhibition in
Germany voted 36.2% for the Psion 5MX. I suppose the business world still
sees this platform as the most efficient to work with, while the larger
public is more interested in bluetooth, music an photos. Now if Psion would
after all develop the colour screen for the 5MX ... they would surely have a
winner for some more years to come.

Re. BCC update - I sent no. 7 to 4 different email addresses. Via Compuserve
using OzwinII software I could not see the addresses, 2 addresses via my 5MX
I saw it all, to my work PC I could see them in the internet header (View,
options). This digest will be sent from my PC at home with Outlook. Please
don't inform me anymore, with the 4 addresses I use I can see it all myself
and will report in a few more digests whether I can conclude something or
not (for the record, I sent the digests via Demon Internet and not
Freeserve).

Re. Dighandler - Rolf is currently moving flat and off line for a few days.
I suggest you ask him directly. I am already in contact with him (he is
helping me greatly with writing the macros / programs for handling the
digest on the 5MX, thanks Rolf) and together we will make any changes needed
to make it work.
Answer to: Toby
Re. Tom Tom maps - When I upgraded my Routeplanner program to the new Tom
Tom one I asked them also about the Tom Tom City program. They told me the
differences with Streetplanner Millenium are only cosmetic and the maps are
the same. Unless they meanwhile upgraded the maps again, it is not
worthwhile to upgrade, unless you need the European cities.
Answer to: Sanjay Chawla
Re. Sleeping 5 - If you have a proper back-up on a PC or CF card I would
take out all the batteries. There is no need to keep outdated info on the 5
and it will avoid any risk of leaking batteries damaging the machine. It
will probably also reduce the risk of faults, keeping it in "factory state".

just know that downloading email etc. is considerably faster than when using

Together with the OS.IMG file there was a text file telling you to rename
the old c:\system\data\COMMSDB.DAT file because they've changed the format.
This file contains all the modem settings....
Either recreate the modem settings, or do as I did:
Rename the file back again, go into the 'modems' applet, select your modem,
tap on 'Edit' then 'OK'. This will save the information in the new format.

Mhhh, ...
no sketch onboard, I had to reload from the CD with version 156,

Opera version5 onboard .... buggy (yes, SSL connexions are impossible

Unfortunately, this is normal. What I have done is integrate my backup
routines with my power maintenance on my Makos.
I do a maintenance backup (1 minute) daily (when I remember not to forget),
and then a full backup (30 minutes) once a week (I pull "Internal" out of my
backup file on PsiWin prior to backup forcing a full backup).
I then restore both Makos.
This means I have three machines up and ready and forces me to check the
batteries on the Makos at least once a week. When a Mako gets down towards
zero, I plug it in overnight.

Subject: New user!!
Dear all psion-ers,
A big hellou from Mr Fernando, a happy 5mX brand new owner ! ! !!! -better
late, than never, isn't?-
You might have seen some questions from me before in this digest, which i
have been following for more than a year, but it has not been until last
april, that i have my own little 5mX.
I have been for years thinking which machine to get. Reading all pros and
cons. Because Psion stopped production, I tried to find something
similar with more clear future but, guys, it is impossible for me to find
anything else that serves better than a 5mX.
Thinking get Spanish or English version... I even borrowed one for 2 weeks,
when i lived in Spain, but the seller failed to get me a new one, so i could
not buy it, at the end. To try one help me to decide.
Finally, I got mine from Ebay last week. It seems new, it smells new, and
got it delivered to South Korea, where i am living now. (170 BP total)
Apart of my tiny SONY RUVI videocamera, I never had something so priceless
on my hands!!!! I completely agree with P Johnston msg, 22 april, that PSION
machines are incredible and if i dont suffer any unexpected disapointement
with my 5mX (..screen cable??), i will stick to psion.
And as the best things in life: I wish i had it earlier !!!!!!
You, old psioners, might think that i am joining the fun too late... and
many of us already put our eyes on different machines. But none of the other
items, would get my interest after trying a 5mX.
Right, folks, here goes my questions and comments. Please forgive me if this
msg is far too long, or the questions too silly, but my only experience is
based on reading sites and your digest.
I promisse next time will not be this long..
1) I think you all US-DIGESTERS are GREAT, and i have not seen any other
users so helpfull and active as you are. Added value to the machine.
Therefore, one of the reason i got one myself. I wanted to be in the
club!!!! Thanks Itamar for keeping the digest going!!!
I hope the rumour about the 5mx going back to production is true!
With the amount of happy users PSION has got, and the big amount of machines
still on sale from different sellers - going under 200 pounds new-, as long
as we have updated soft, i think we
can have PSION for same or even longer time than some other models in the
market that appear and desappear. We, the happy users, are not only loyal
but also the best (and free) publicity for potential buyers.
2) BOOKS: I am thinking to suscribe to the palmtop mag, but anyone has any
books about the 5mX, which are worthy to have? (If you want to get rid of of
some old palmtop mags send me an email, pls)
3) Extra toys: Next, I am going to need an Irda PRINTER. I will get it color
to be able to use it on PC, too. Please, advised me the best option.
COMPACT FLASH, is there a limit on the size that the 5mX will recognize???
Any CF to avoid?
C-PEN: any comments??
Modem: at the moment... i see it too complicated for me. So i will stick to
the PC for internet. I am amazed how well Itamar is managing the digest from
the 5mX!!
4) Any TIPS you want to share to a B from Beginner? any must-have softs?? (I
Mainly Use for: word & contacts, some e-book and games.. je)
Thank you vmuch for reading,
Fernando, Kwang-Ju, South Korea.
PS Good luck on the Worldcup, and if anyone wants a pic of the Worldcup

Subject: Revo Backup, using a Revo and S7
Revo backup problems - is this file maybe not your agenda file open in the
"today" view of the system program? there is a menu option to close it when
you are in the 'files' view.
Using a revo and a Series 7 together: I have found this, for my particular
needs, to be nearly impossible. The problem is that, using Epoc Synch, I can
only update information on one or the other, but not both, as it cannot do
field level mergers. Is there any software that can do this via infrared? I
tried using Outlook as a middle man between the two devices, but it meant
that I have to be at my desk to sync, and it's just not worth the
conveniance of having the Revo with me always. I've found my current system
works better - putting all my contacts (phone numbers) on my Nokia 6110, and
leaving my S7 in the car when I am out for social stuff, and just lugging
around the S7 when it's business/varsity related stuff. The only problem
this does not sort out is the fact that people often get intimidated by the
S7, where as this does not happen with the discrete Revo.
Therefore, at the moment I'm looking for a buyer for my Revo - in full
working order, brilliant external condition, and with only about 2 weeks of
use... always charging the battery as per instructions. (it is a later model
that had the upgrade to the charging circuitry done in the factory). Any
offers from an SA person?
Unless of course some brilliant soul can inform me on how to synch the two
in a more intelligent manner ;)

Subject: Synchronising Psion with mobile phones
Hi all!
As some of you may remember, I have earlier reported to this digest that I'm
a very satisfied user of Psion 5mx (nowadays an MC218) and an Ericsson T39.
They satisfy my demand for IT support to a large extent and besides office
work activities, no more gadgets are needed.
However, for more than half a year I have adopted a process of synchronising
the MC218 Agenda with Outlook (on my home PC), then synchronising Outlook
with the T39 Calendar and as a last step synchronising the MC218 and Outlook
Agendas once more (to get the MC218 & the T39 fully in tune with each other;
I always carry the T39 and often note new activities/meetings in the phone
Calendar). I do not use Outlook for anything else than as "a bridge" to
synchronise the agendas of the two mobile units.
Of course it would be a relief to be able to synchronise the MC218 and the
T39 (or a a T68!) directly by using their IR ports, but I have not found a
sw capable of this.
My question: does anybody know of such a software or is anybody out there
competent / willing to write one? The prime wish is for a sw synchronising
the Agendas, but a sw that also can cope with the contact registers would of
course be one step better. As it is possible to transfer single Agenda data
between the two machines, I guess that this could not be an impossible task.
All comments and suggestions are welcome!
