Subject: Mako/Revo Extras settings
Hi folks,
This is something which I noted on my Mako when I got it, but never got around to asking...
The machine's silkscreen icons, reading from left, are Contacts, Agenda, Email, Phone, Time, Calc, Jotter and Extras.
However, in my Mako anyway, there is a bug in "Extras bar" in the Control Panel, in so far as when one toggles through the settings, the icons appear in order of Contacts, Agenda, Email, Phone, Jotter, Time, Calc and Extras..., i.e Jotter, Time and Calc are not in the same order as they appear on the silkscreen, and accordingly one has to make allowance for this when entering one's favoured positions on the Extras bar.
I do not know if this bug applies to all Makos, or indeed to the Revo as well?
Has anybody shared this experience, I wonder?
Regards,
Kevin [Cork, Ireland]

Subject: Nokia 7110 and Ericsson MC218
Hi all.
Not sure if I've asked this before, but does anyone know of any software/hardware that will get my MC219 and my 7110 talking regarding phone book, contacts etc? It seems the MC218 will recognise the contacts via IRdA, but it can't save or modify them.
Also, does anyone know of a UK source for the fontmachine program? This seems a nifty way to get my Japanese fonts onto my MC218. Or is there another solution? The reason for this is I get emails from friends in Japan, and they always come up as 'bad header' on the mail program.
Any help would be appreciated.

Subject: Power to a Mako
Toby asks "If I go ahead and get a Mako from the States, could someone tell me how it works with UK power (ie can I use my series 5 mains cable, or will I need
an adapter?)".
I bought a Mako here in the USA and though I haven't used it yet I've found that the Psion cable for the 5mx does NOT work well. The Mako has the input on the back and the nipple on the power cable is too short to make a reliable contact while the case is open (It may work when the case is closed because then the screen part doesn't overhang).
But the cheap Tandy adaptors I also use (variable voltage output, 300mA, about $10), have a longer nipple and fit perfectly.
Like Itamar, I keep my 5mx plugged in while I'm at home & office so I get about 4 months out of the batteres, using several cheap adaptors in different rooms.

RE :
The US cable coming with my Mako from Sparco was 110V only .
I had to buy a Eurolocal (say UK or FR) AC/DC + cable:
220V 50mA / 6V 500mA; Minus Outside; modulated ( 2 - 5 Euros at the corner shop)
Could someone check if the 5 cable fits these parameters?

I'm certainly willing to help pay for it. Perhaps we should set up
an International Monetary Fund to which folks can contribute.

If I ever get my Mako back and working, I'll give that a try after I
do a restore. It's doing the soft reset immediately after the
restore that's the key?

I have psiWin on my Pc already as I own both a 5 and a 5mx but neither comes with the Opera Browser that the Revo Plus/Mako has.

Hi! Thanks Itamar for the Digest! I had missed it!
Anyone experiencing this? Streetplanner hangs and leaves only data garbage on the CF it is installed on (doc. and folder names changed to garbage, unusable).
BTW, trying to use the CF (after reinstallling everything) on another machine, it tells me I have to install everything from cd - on the roiginal machine it works. Can this be avoided?
many thanks,

Except he will need a Mako/Revo disk for the extras - like spell check which is not bundled as it is with the 5mx. There's also Opera on the disk as well as a Mako/Revo friendly Web. The Web on the 5mx psiwin disk is incompatible with the Revo/Mako.
I have 2 Makos so should have 2 disks. I just looked over all the logical storage places and come up with only one disk. Will keep looking for the second disk.

The disclosure of BCC addresses is a bug in "EPOC Email Version 2.00" and I'm only surprised that the addresses haven't been visible in every case. When I've sent myself a BCC of a message from the 5mx to retrieve later with the PC, the BCC line with address is always visible.

The Revo is the same. I thought it might have been related to the order of the 5mx icons (except Phone) but it doesn't match that either. It must be a "feature" to make sure you are paying attention!!

<<when I try to send emails with attachments bigger than 8 kB with the mx Pro, the email application hangs up and I must press Ct+Sh+Fn+K to kill the msgSuite>>
It may depend on what you are using as a modem. If it is an IR mobile, installing the Mobile Connectivity Update might help, but I am not certain whether the German language "5mxPro" actually requires it. You can always try it and uninstall it again if that's not the solution. There is a copy
on the "Series 5(mx)" page of my website.

The Series 5 mains adaptor can be used with the Revo / Mako but the connector is very slightly shorter. This means that it doesn't stay in properly when inserted directly into the Revo, although it does seem to be OK when plugged into the socket on the docking cradle's (PC) serial port connector.

Having just managed to re-subscribe to the Digest, I notice in No 8 mention made of a subscriber "Darryl Kempster" who was aware of the Toshiba 2GB PCMCIA HDD at a "really cheap (£80)." I would be interested in one at this price for my netBook! Where are they available please?
Finally, a huge thanks to Itamar for keeping the temporary digest going.

Hello gang,
I have a scenario which I don't know a solution for - perhaps I need enlightening...
Supposing I'm working on a Sheet or Word document on my Psion and I need to email it to a friend/colleague - but she doesn't have PSIWin on her PC. Is there a utility available that would convert my document BEFORE I send it from my Psion. ie. such that the attachment she receives can be dropped straight into Excel/Lotus123 or MS Word/Amipro, etc?
TIA,

Re. Nokia 9290 - The website you gave us goes straight to www.fancycars.com. Please check it again.

Re. Advertising - Thanks for your thoughts and support. There is no censorship on this digest, and if people would like to write messages about Epoc v.6 no-one will stop them. Having said that, I note from your website (nice one) that there is already a digest for v6.0, and as such wonder whether it would be more efficient in the meantime to leave this digest more concentrated on the older Epoc versions. if you could somewhere on your website mention this digest, that would be most welcome. A website is already in the making by someone else, thanks.
Answer to: Huub
Have a safe trip and a great holiday, and thanks for adding the digest to your website.

Re. Old digests - I am not sure how far back my lists went, as someone else sent these to me. I could send you the list of current subscribers if you can check that list somehow against the old digests you have stored.
Great tip from Palmtop Magazine :
Re. Remembering Home - After a soft reset, the Home City is changed in Time. To have the Psion remember your current home city after a soft reset, just add a new (imaginary, if you like) city using the "Add City" command. For some reason, presumably because extra information gets written to the !TimeW.ini" file, your current home city also then gets saved - and restored too, should you later have to do a soft reset.
Re. 9210 resets - And in the same edition a report from a heavy user who has to do frequent resets on the 9210 to free memory. Any comments ?

Subject: NETBOOK ROM
Hi Guys,
For Darryl Kempster re netBook ROM:
The original version of the netBook ROM was 154 and this was still on the CD as late as Feb 2000. 154 was slightly buggy - eg Web used to freeze a lot - but apart from that it was better than 156 in some respects - eg you could date Jotter entries with the creation date.
Apart from the Psion Enterprise (later Teklogix) website, the only other place I saw 156 on the web was an FTP site, the address of which I unfortunately seem to have deleted.
In view of Psion's admission of problems with 158, and the number of users who no longer have 156, perhaps a friendly e-mail to Teklogix will persuade them to put 156 back on the netBook os page until 158 is fixed. (Crap sentence, sorry.) Or maybe, even, permanently for those of us who don't want to be saddled with Opera

Subject: Win 2000 and printing
Hi all,
I just switched from a PC running NT4 to a new one with Win 2000 and I'm running into printing problems. Windows pops up the following message: "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! Program:C:\Program Files\Psion\PsiWin\WPRNTSP.EXE Abnormal program termination" With NT there was no problem at all, neither with Win 98, same Netbook.
I use PsiWin 2.33 (new install instead of 2.32), all connections run perfectly well, using printing through PC, the same printer, no exotic fonts etc.
Does anybody know of an issue??
Someone posted sometimes ago that the English version of Rom 158 included nFTP (a beta downloaded from an Italian URL). Is this also onboard for the final English language release?
Cheers,

Subject: Psion Dacom Modem w/ 5mx / 5mx production?
Hello,
Thank you Itamar for keeping this Digest together (even though you don't want us to tell you).
Would anyone know of a way to use the Psion Dacom Modem with the 5mx? Or any other pcmcia modem card? My mobile phone connection has not been very reliable lately. I use the Psion modem with the S7 and it works very well so was wondering if there might be some adapter available for the 5mx. I bought the Travel modem but find it extremely unreiiable.
On another note, it is good news that the 5mx will be in production again (is it confirmed?). It makes me brave enough to pull out my 5mx again knowing that when the cable breaks I can get a backup. I have been using the Revo plus but am always wary that the battery will shut down the machine at some critical moment.
Best regards,
Dick

The details of Owner, Machine Name etc. are actually stored on the Psion, in psiwin.ini (C:\System), so unless you delete that the Psion will always be recognised, even after formatting your Hard Disk!
And whoever asked where to get the £25 T68, it was Phones4U in the UK (don't believe the list price). However, on Vodafone through them, they are using a billing company who don't *yet* have GPRS available, despite Vodafone offering it. Aaargh!

Subject: Mako Power - netBook Build 158
Hi all
Toby asked about power for the Mako. I use two different types of solution.
1. A power supply from a 5/5mx/MC218 plugged into the socket on the serial lead or
2. A power supply that came from Widget (I think) that has a straight plug and goes straight into the Mako.
The latter is an ideal solution for when you don't want to take the docking station with you. The only reason that I have two though is because I already had the former for the MC218. The latter would actually serve both purposes.
---
Can someone advise me of the url for the build 158 download? I have managed to lose the downloads link again.
