Subject: Phoneman Pro & Nokia 6310i

Hi,

I'm a proud owner of a brand new Nokia 6310i but I have a little problem with Phoneman Pro (and the Nokia plugin). SMS works well but I can't upload/download addressbook information. Upon connecting to the phone via irda the phone (kind of) resets and the irda link breaks. This in not a full phone reset but the screen goes blank for a second or so.

Luckily, the Nokia CD containes a Win program "Content Copier" which helped me to get my address book from the trusty 7110 to the new 6310i.

For those who don't know yet: the 6310i is the successor of the 6310 with Java 2 Micro Edition (MIDP profile) on board. I managed to upload a Java game (PushPuzzle) from Sun's development kit to the device. I had to make some some modifications to the code to make it run on the tiny screen but it's worth the effort.

Dear all -

I am finding my Mako Plus (Revo Plus) is usafullas it smaller than my 5 and 5mx

when I don'tneed all the stuff I keep on te CF.  Is there an easy way to synchronize Agenda and Contact files between the two so I can essentially use

them interchangeably.

Thank.

Go to www.psion.com/index_alt.html

Put your cursor on "Mobile Computing" (on the left side of the page, and on the right you'll then see "for Professionals". Move your

cursor over there while it's still showing, and click.

On the next page, log in. Click on "Software Downloads" near the bottom of the page. Choose product "5mx" (I think you'll end up with the same thing if you choose Revo/Revo Plus), and "Application" for Category.

On the next page, scroll down and there it is.  Good luck.

Why the hell they've made it so complicated is beyond me! Designed

Pray!  I sent my Mako in for repair before the warranty is up.

Nothing but battery problems.  It was returned with absolutely no

paperwork to indicate just what, if anything, had been done to it.

It wouldn't turn on, so I assumed it needed to be given an *initial*

charge.  It's charging now. But for how long?  Owner's manual says

6-hours. One forum site says 12-hours, another forum says 18-hours,

and a 3rd says 24-hours.  Too many cooks?

<<the init string that I set for the Travel modem is at&f, I think, according to the instructions that came in the box. Baud rate 19200, Flow control: Hardware, Terminal and Carrier detect both ticked. I always use landline. Normally, I have no problem connecting to the ISP. I get diconnected when 'connecting to mailbox'.>>

Why would you set your port speed to only 19200 with a 56k modem? It must be running extremely slowly. The correct settings are:

Name: Psion 56k IR Travel Modem

Speed: 115200

Connect via: Infrared

Fax Class: Auto

--------------------

Speaker: Until call answered

Vol: Medium

Pause: 4 secs

--------------------

Init (reset) string: AT&F

Data: (blank)

Fax: (blank)

--------------------

Flow control: None

Terminal (DSR/DTR) [ ] not checked

Carrier (DCD) [ ] not checked

Modem type: Fixed line

--------------------

If you are consistently unable to access your mailbox, it is possible that your email settings, although appearing to be correct, are corrupt. Try deleting them, perform a "soft" reset and enter them again.

It was good to receive the digest this morning having not had one for a week - and it appears I've somehow missed out on receiving no. 11 & 12 (and I thought 13 was an unlucky no).

Not sure how this has happenned, and whether anyone else has missed out ?

Could you send me the 2 missing ones please.

Thanks,

Subject: MMC / 2gb PCMCIA / Mobile Phone

Hi All

Kevin asked about backing up an MMC to CF thru a 7. The MMC to PC card adaptors do exist, although I am yet to see one in the flesh. There is absolutely no reason why what you are suggesting shouldn't work.

I have bitten the bullet and ordered a Toshiba 2gb PCMCIA card. It is coming from Dabs and was ordered over the net (which means free P&P) but because the order is small there is a surcharge of a few pounds. Total cost comes out to 76.31 ukp and will be delivered by Friday. Ironically I was about to place an order for a couple of 256mb CFs, but this should fulfill my needs for some considerable time yet! I will let you all know what I think of it.

My Orange contract comes to an end shortly. There has been an increase in spam text messages and an unresolved issue, so I have decided to look around at the competition. The problem is that my 6210 fits my needs so well I am probably going to stick with the very similar 6310 and look forward to the first bluetooth accessory for the netBook! One thing I do like about Orange is that when you ring them with a problem or query you do so at their cost, rather than Singlepoint (Vodafone) who make you dial an 0870 number. What is the arrangement on One to One and BT Cellnet?

Thanks

I have installed Psiwin 2.3.3 on my Win 2000 pc and an IR unit to Com 1.

When my 5Mx is in range, and switched to Infrared, the IR icon appears in

the sytem tray. So we are speaking to each other?

However My Psion will not make a connection. "A connection could not be

formed between your PC and Psion" error message appears. Tried all baud

settings from 9600-115200

"The only conversion software I know that runs standalone on a Psion is nConvert by Neuon, see <www.Neuon.com>...

But .... I never succeeded in converting reliably excel files nor converting sheet to excel.

Concerning the conversion probs encountered with excel files, I was in contact with Neuon but got no information on a futur update."

Marc

I have never owned a Windows computer in my life so nConvert is an absolutely essential extension to my Psion(s) - MC218, Series 7 and now netBook : )

As part of my job as merchandise manager for rock bands I use nConvert v1.01 on a daily basis to convert EPOC sheet to/from excel to email to my boss . I too encountered problems and received no reply from Neuon. I did however work out a solution which has worked for me 99% of the time.

To convert I first make a copy of the EPOC sheet file. I then highlight all the contents, Copy using Ctrl-C and use "Edit/Paste/Paste Special/Paste Contents" to remove all formatting from the cells. The file can then be converted to excel and emailed as an attachment to a Windows computer, and worked on from there with no problems.

Trying to convert Sheet without removing the formatting first meant the file could be opened on a Windows computer but as soon as a cell was clicked on the file crashed.

I have been using the above method for the last 2 years without problems apart from sending to certain email clients. Some email programmes refuse to accept the files as attachments and they are received as gobbledegook.I think this was to an AOL address which is too Windows orientated for my liking anyway.

Anyone else with a different solution or who knows if Neuon have released an updated version?

Subject: Thai system on 5mx? / Travel Modem success

Hello,

Thai system:

My cousin has been very impressed with my 5mx but is more comfortable in Thai. He currently uses a Palm (Thai fonts/system). Would anyone know how I could get Thai system or fonts to be recognized on a 5mx? We would then have another convert.

Travel Modem:

Had time to experiment with my Travel modem. I never had problems connecting to my ISP by landline. The problem was timeouts waiting to retrieve mail. I would normally connect to my ISP by opening mailbox from the Email program. I now first connect to Web (usually Yahoo) and then open my email program. The message on top right corner says connected. When I open my mailbox, mail gets retrieved immediately. No more time outs. Have had good success now. For some reason, accessing the pop3 account is more stable once connected via Web. I previously tried with Opera but had timeout problems too.

Settings are:

Modem: 115200baud, infrared, auto(fax)

Options: until call answered, loud, 4 secs

Init: init (reset) str AT&F, Data init str AT&F, Fax init str left blank

Advanced: Flow control: Hardware, Terminal/Carrier detect: both checked

Best regards,

Dick

Answer to: Dick

Re. IR Travelmodem - First of all change the speed to 115200, as the main advantage of this modem is it's speed. Secondly I have got for flow control "None" entered and both Terminal and Carrier unticked. This might well have been your problem.

To All

Re. HP Jornada - Some of us thought that this machine could be a replacement for the 5MX. On the website www.handhelds.org (quoted by Arents) it says that with the merger of HP and Compaq it was decided to discontinue the HP Jornada in favour of the HP iPAQ ... yet another casualty. It appears that keyboard palmtops are disappearing.

Subject: Once more: Synchronising Psion with mobile phones

Hi again!

I did not get any response to my first posting on the above topic. Permit me to be stubborn and try once more.

I have earlier reported to this digest that I'm a very satisfied user of Psion 5mx (nowadays an MC218) and an Ericsson T39. They satisfy my demand for IT support to a large extent and besides office work activities, no more gadgets are needed.

However, for more than half a year I have adopted a process of synchronising the MC218 Agenda with Outlook (on my home PC), then synchronising Outlook with the T39 Calendar and as a last step synchronising the MC218 and Outlook Agendas once more (to get the MC218 & the T39 fully in tune with each other; I always carry the T39 and often note new activities/meetings in the phone Calendar). I do not use Outlook for anything else than as "a bridge" to synchronise the agendas of the two mobile units.

Of course it would be a relief to be able to synchronise the MC218 and the T39 (or a a T68!) directly by using their IR ports, but I have not found a sw capable of this.

My question: does anybody know of such a software or is anybody out there competent / willing to write one? The prime wish is for a sw synchronising the Agendas, but a sw that also can cope with the contact registers would of course be one step better. As it is possible to transfer single Agenda data between the two machines, I guess that this could not be an impossible task.

Anybody using the same hw setup? Anybody synchronising? Are there other ways of doing this.

All comments and suggestions are welcome!

Jan G
