I've already mentioned the digest in Comp.sys.Psion.Misc once, but can do it again.
But my newsserver is newsgate.org and I don't know if every server bothers with receiving from it, so...

In theory it should work...
That is if you can find such and adapter.
(I think I once saw something about just such an adapter on news, but it was a while ago)
Just make certain that the adapter is 'ATA Flash' compatible.
(And ask in the shop to try it)
As for files, native ER6 files will not be readable on ER5 because they're (among other things) unicode.
'Standard' files should work OK...

For those with S5/S5mx(and probably MC218) who's irritated by the neverending story(well, the alarm that rings and rings...)
I just received the latest issue of Palmtop magazine and there they mention a program 'Watchdog' that monitors battery consumption, and can guess, based on prior usage, remaining usage, and can even mess with the alarm server, and stop alarms ringing after a configurable period...
It can be found at:

Just thought you all should know...

Howdy!
I've just become the proud owner of a 13 Gig external PCMCIA harddrive. Any idea whether it would work with an S7 or Netbook if I feel rich one day? The drive has an external power supply, so should not overtax the power resources of the Psion's PCMCIA port.
I also have an iSpeed 24x PCMCIA CD-rom. This one does draw power from the PCMCIA, but there is a socket on the back to plug in 5V DC externally if needed, so maybe that would also work with an S7 or Netbook?
The drive is a Kanguru PCMCIA Portable and works fine so far with my bronze age Toshiba Pentium 100.

<<For some reason, accessing the pop3 account is more stable once connected via Web.>>
You might find it useful to install John McAleely's little program
"The Dialer". This lets you connect to the internet independently
from any particular application, a bit like Dial Up Networking on
a PC. It will also confirm that a connection has been established
before trying to use an internet application such as Web, Email,
Opera, RMRNews etc. One thing though if you do decide to use it,
make sure that in "Control Panel / Internet" you have a time
entered in the box "On exit, stay online for..." which is
sufficient to allow you to open an internet application (or in
the case of Email, open a mailbox), otherwise the connection will
drop immediately. The Dialer can be downloaded from the
"Series 5(mx)" page of my website or there is a link to John's
site for more information.

<<I have installed Psiwin 2.3.3 on my Win 2000 pc and an IR unit to Com 1.>>
Most importantly though, do you have a Virtual IR COM port displayed in PsiWin properties which you can select? Windows 2000 doesn't support
Virtual IR COM ports due to changes made by Microsoft in the implementation of IR, although there are third party "solutions" which have had varying degrees of success.
Have a look at the W2k_IR file on my "Series 5(mx)" page and also this page:

Subject: Can I turn off the touch screen on my revo?
Dear all
I have just paid to have the screen on my 5mx replaced because of the dreaded cable failure and so I do not feel like paying to replace the cracked screen on my Revo just yet. It has been one of those months.
Is there some way I can disable the touch screen?
The Revo is performing and I can read the screen etc it just opens files and applications with a will of its own?
Like all of us I am grateful to Itamar for his efforts. Thanks mate.

Have a look at EpocSync from FreEPOC (www.freepoc.org). It's let you sync over IR between the 2 machines. Note however that it will only sync the Agenda and Contacts files (and any others you choose) - and not the individual entries. It does this by looking at the date/time stamp of the files and choosing the most recent as the one to sync. So long as you don't switch between the 2 machines WITHOUT syncing (i.e. if you make changes to both Agendas say) then you'll be okay.

I spent a long time trying to get my Psions to talk natively with Windows 2K over PsiWin. I managed it with Win'95/98/Me but eventually concluded that Win2K/XP have been 'knobbed' by Microsoft. It is possible to use plBeam to send individual files to and from Win2K/XP however. See my Pscience5 website for details/write up on all the above: www.pscience5.net (I really must finish the 'bad news' bit about Win2K not working....)

True - but I believe they were only talking about the PocketPC Journada's - not the palmtop machines. I believe that the official line (for the time being anyway) is that the palmtops will be re-branded as HP iPAQs (as will the current Compaq iPAQs) and continue on.
And last but certainly not least a big thank you to Itamar (and now Rolf) for all his/their continued efforts. Very much appreciated. :-)

Re. Orange - Interesting, I was just debating to change to Orange. Vodaphone decided in their wisdom to exclude all 0800, 0500, 0808, 0845 and 0870 numbers from their free minutes, and called it a "minor change". Do Orange give free minutes in their contract and do they allow these numbers as free numbers ? With Orange I could also get the higher speed phones.

Hi All
My new toy arrived today and I am sure that some of you will be keen to hear some feedback on what could be a huge storage device for a low £ per mb price.
I took out the CF/PC card adaptor which carries an 80mb CF out of the slot on my netbook and plugged in the 2gb CF card. I CTRL+Q'd to the E: drive and guess what ....... Drive not Found. You hear it spin up momentarily and then it clicks and nothing happens. I have tried it with the power plugged in just in case it made a difference, but it didn't.
When I put it in the card slot on the side of my laptop it spots it straights away and checking the properties confirms that it is formatted FAT. I get the feeling that this is a driver issue somehow, but I am not sure.
Never mind, perhaps the microdrive will be my salvation!

Have you had any problems with your Nokia 6310 locking up? I heard that the security features Nokia introduced on this phone to prevent stolen ones being reused also meant that if the phone locks up (as happens occasionally with my 6210), it has to be unlocked by the service provider.

Mike,
It seems also to depend on the email provider you use to collect your email from. I have my emails sent to 2 different ISPs, if I collect the _same_ email from them, I only get the BCC addresses from one of them. (I use Orange.net and OneTel.net, if I remember correctly, Orange lets me see the BCC addresses, OneTel doesn't).

Hi ,\nd,
I'm sure someone has mentioned nConvert from Neuon, which is a reasonably good file converter for the Psion. It does have some limitations converting from other formats to Psion formats, but often works well. It seems pretty competent converting from Psion to Window friendly formats, although the formatting can sometimes need adjusting on the receiving PC. The website of Neuon is at:
www.neuon.com
Alternatively, the only other option I know, is to use PsiWin at your end to convert the file, then email it form your PC, or copy it back to the Psion (without conversion) and email it from there.

Jason

Subject: Re: Neuon nConvert & Excel files
Dear Digestives,
There has been some dicscussion regarding the above. It is a conversion to/from I make regualarly, and I have some observations that may be of use:
From Sheet to Excel,
This conversion works well, but sometimes needs formatting adjustments in Excel. The less formatting you can do on the Psion, the cleaner it will appear in Excel.
From Excel to Sheet,
This only works up Excel version 4.0. After this MS started using Excel workbooks which have multiple pages. These will NOT convert, you will have to ask the sender to save each page singly as an Excel 4.00 document.
Neuon - I have emailed Neuon on several issues regarding nConvert (I am a registered user) and have had no responses. As a result I do not use other Neuon programs.

Subject: Apple/Psion Connectivity
Hi all,
I've recently been given an Apple Power Macintosh 7100/66, OS 8.6 and 56 Mb RAM, (no USB connections) and I wondered if there was a way of connecting my Psion 5mx to it.
Primarily I want to use it to store backups but if I can plumb my Psion through it to the InterNet that would be a bonus. There are instructions on the 'Net to do this for OS 9 and up but I wouldn't want to upgrade the Mac OS (even if I could).
At the moment I can't solder a lead but I can get it done if need be. I have a spare Honda/9 pin lead so if an adaptor is not possible soldering is an option. The Mac appears to have a spare circular 9 (not 8) pin port with a printer logo above it which the manual describes as a printer/LocalTalk port. The only things connected are the modem, keyboard (and mouse), monitor and power.
I have used Google to try to find any 'Net pages relevant but everything seems to be O S 9/X relevant. Can anyone here help?
Take care,
Phil.

If this site is still giving firewall problems, does anyone have a suggestion about where to publish this so that people in this list can download it? It should be a private place, since I don't think Psion will like it if it appeared on a public site. Also, my ISP does not really like it if I email such big attachments (5.7 MB).

Subject: JORNADA 720
Hi Guys,
Re Itamar's recent posting about the Jornada 720 and the demise of keyboard/pen-based PDAs:
I may be wrong, but I get the impression that even casual PDA users are starting to realise the need for a keyboard. There's a much wider range of clip-on/plug-in versions available for Palms and Pocket PCs now. Then there's the slide out version on the Zaurus SL-5500 and the RIM-style keyboard of the Handspring Treo 180. Admittedly these are mainly 'thumb-type' keyboards but can a new generation of keyboard/pen-based PDAs be far behind? Then there's the revival of the S5mx. You may recall a posting that I made to the UPS5 Digest earlier in the year about Psion's announcement that their PDA sales last year were better than expected.
If you want to check out the current state-of-play grab a copy of Pen Computing's 2002 buyer's Guide, it's the best reference resource I've seen for mobile computers (so long as they use a pen). By the way, the netBook and netpad both receive very positive comment which is astonishing for a US publication.
