Well... I once had disk problems on my(then) 32MB CF card way back when I used the S5. Checkdisk managed to recover the files.
(Which were lucky since at that time I was sitting in a hotel room far away from the PC with the backup)

That was me....
1. Some programs can read the files, but not all.
(Something about them not understanding the complete file header)
2. Yes, you can change the setting. What's unfortunate is that it's set to 'create .zip with icon' as default until you change it manually.
(It's the ONLY nag I have about this othervise excellent program :-)

Personally, I HATE to fire up the PC just to copy a file or twenty from a CD to my netBook...
But what I would really like is a floppy drive.
Yes, really.
I work on a lot of computers, and unfortunately, not all of them can run Psiwart, so transferring files can be a real pain.
I'm not even asking about a drivee that shows up as a new drive letter.
A simple program to copy files back and forth would do just fine.
(I should be able to make it myself, but I really don't have the time)

This is a known bug in Opera. It really do accept the changes, it just doesn't display them.
It's more probably the bank site that's checking what browser you're using and version nr.
Check what it's set to in 'Connection preferences'...
(Setting it to 'Internet exploder 5.0' often solves this)
You can also check 'Pricvacy options'

I don't know what APOP is, but...
Messagesuite on the netBook accepts IMAP4 (and there's a download to upgrade some other machines, I belive), and as for SMTP authentication, one of the email services I use insists on exactly that, so I guess MessageSuite delivers that, also...
(But will not accept separate passwords for sending, only the same as logon)

Now for a question:
My good old Nokia 2110 died recently and I had to replace it.
I ended up with a Siemens M50 which is supposed to have GPRS support, but...
I'm having problems getting that to work, and being on vacation, I haven't been able to download a .PDF with modem commands either.
The manuals are crap, they doesn't contain any info about modem commandsand not even page references are correct...
(Tech support first offered to mail me drivers, then, when I told them I didn't use Windaft, offered to mail a 500KB .PDF. Not a fun prospect on single speed GSM)
So, anyway. Anyone else have any experience with this one?
(It's fairly new...)

Was it just one SIS file, or every one?
Which Psion? If it's a Series 5 (not 5mx), does it have the Add/Remove Control Panel icon installed? See
http://www.silverglance.com/downloads/EPOCInstall/Readme.txt
Did you try just copying the SIS file(s) directly to the Psion and clicking on the SIS there? There was a quirk with the 7 or the netBook (can't remember which) that a particular build version of the OS caused that problem...it could be that your Psion's OS was updated when you got it repaired, or the motherboard has been swapped with one with this quirk.
Finally, I can't think of a better place for variety of different Psion programs from different sources than Tucows. It's the site I recommend people go to when looking for files. If you wish to download from the program author's own site, there's usually a link to their site (but many times I've come across programs still on Tucows that have been abandoned by their author...so I'm glad there's Tucows to keep those programs available).

Subject: EDU usefulness
Hi Itamar,
having my IT origins in the DOS era I have seen many times the
problem of cross-linked files (files being registered in the FAT as
occupying the same space) or corrupt FAT's (File Allocation Table - the
directory of where all files reside in a disk). Because of that, I am
of the opinion that such tools may assist in maintaining a healthy file
system. EDU has many times given me the message of corrupt . and ..
entries (these are the current and previous folder) and happily
corrected them. Of course I never know whether the diagnosis is correct
or whether the fix was successful but we all have to trust someone
sometime.
Then there is the defragmentation argument which claims that when
altering a file many times causes it to be written at non-consecutive
locations on the disk (due to the many reads and writes) thus making the
disk spin many times to fully load a file to memory. This may not be
useful with CF cards (no moving parts) as was mentioned previously on
the digest but it may be faster to read a file into memory if reading
from one location rather than reading the file in pieces.
What it all boils down to is whether you buy into this philosophy.
Sometimes I think it was all created by the corresponding vendors to get
us to but their products. As I am a believer in "an ounce of prevention
is worth a pound of cure" I went ahead and purchased EDU.
Regards to all,
Marios

Subject: CD ROM / CPen800c
Answer to Peter Keene :
"... why do you want a CD ROM for your netBook when you can have CF or an IBM microdrive?"
Nearly all the software I have for the Psion I bought boxed so it comes on either floppy or CD. I much prefer this to electronic download because (1) I get a nice printed manual which I can refer to while using the app (2) I have an instant backup copy instead of having to save it on my already overloaded CF disks (3) It doesn't cost me for the download, which can be lengthy on a Series 5! eg Routeplanner.
Originally software for the Series 3 came on read only SSD which was fine. Then they switched to floppy hence the Cyclone floppy drive. Thus you could still own a Psion without having to own a PC, and it was much cheaper to back up to floppy than to the expensive SSD.
Moving on to the series 5, I think Widget used to supply software on CF (at a price) Now with the netBook you don't even get access to the user manual without a PC cos it's supplied as a pdf file on the CD. At least they give you the OS.img on CF.
So yes I would like a CD/floppy drive for my Psion. The Series 3 could do it so why can't my netBook do the same ten years later?

For Dimitri Corpakis
"It looks like the MC218 does not subscribe to the IROBEX specification that CPen follows, except for the Contacts app.
Does anybody know of any piece of software that could solve this problem?"
This should do the trick!
.
"plBeam is an application enabling exchange of data through infrared port with other palmtops, laptops, PCs and a wide range of machines using the IrOBEX standard.
EPOC system in ER5 version (Psion Series 5mx and later models) enables transmission using the IrOBEX standard. However, it is limited to exchange of single contacts and entries in Agenda only. plBeam breaks this barrier and allows for sending and receiving the whole data files and not only single records.
plBeam works perfectly with other systems using the IrOBEX standard, among others:
- Windows 2000 and Windows Me,
- Windows 95 and Windows 98 (sending files to these systems requires installing special software that is supplied with IrDa adapters),
- PalmOS,
- WindowsCE and PocketPC (Pacemaker software has to be installed),
- CPen,
- WizCom,
- QuickPen
- and many others.
Thanks to plBeam you do not have to install PsiWin software on your PC nor do you need a serial link cable anymore to be able to exchange data.
pIBeam can be downloaded from:
http://www.psiloc.com/html/eng/plbeam/index.html

Available as shareware for EPOC - $19.95"

Subject: General questions about Psion Netbook
Hi all,
I'm thinking of buying a Netbook in addition to my 5MX. Could anybody answers the following questions:
1. Is the PCMCIA slot suitable for a PCMCIA modem? I've read that there may be some problems of voltage. I would like to use the PCMCIA modem that is currently in the Psion PCMCIA adapter for my 5MX.
2. Zip® has released a PCMCIA reader for 40MB Zip® disks. Is that suitable for the Netbook?
3. The only things I have again my 5MX are the bad screen (especially when I use it 8 hours a day...) and the fact it doesn't handle properly a printer hence a Netbook. The 5MX is the only computer I owe and I must always print my Word files through PsiWin by a friend. Does the Netbook work better with a printer (handling of all sizes of font, inter-line space, styles) or would I always have to use PsiWin to print something other that ASCI texts?
4. Are all the programms that run on my 5MX compatible to the Netbook?
5. Is the EPOC Emulator running on a Notebook an alternative to the Netbook? That's an important question. I've never seen the emulator "in action". Does
he enable to work on a Word file like on a 5MX and to use and change Data files? I really need a computer with a better screen and keyboard. The 5MX is perfect for me as it fits my pocket on the ward and I can have
zero-reboot-time access to my notes. I would like to edit these words and data files on a better screen and keyboard computer. Is the emulator fit for that?
6. What should be the price of a second-hand Netbook?
Many many thanks for your answers and it's great to have such a top-quality mailing list!

Subject: Gone Sailing!
Hi Gang!
I'm now on my way south along the Norwegian west coast, and intend to cross the North Sea to Shetland from Ålesund and then continue south via the Orkneys and Caledonian Canal. I hope to spend the winter in either Southern Ireland, Wales or Cornwall, depending on where I can find work. If any of you guys happen to live along my route, I'd love to invite you aboard for a cup of tea (or something stronger) and a chat. Please don't hesitate to contact me, half the fun of cruising is in the people I meet.
In a couple of days, I'll ask Itamar to unsubscribe me from the list to save on cell phone cost, but before I go, I have a question for the learned company. What cell phone provider and ISP should I use in the UK and Eire? I have an Ericsson T39m and use my Mako and MC218 for all e-mail. Since I'm not a resident, I expect I'll have to use a cash card. Do any of the providers allow HSCSD or GPRS on cash cards? Apart from that, I'm looking for good quality service, good coverage and low cost. Will I have to get a different SIM card for Eire?
As for ISP's, I'm preferably looking for a free service. I'll stick with my Norwegian frisurf.no e-mail address and their POP3 server, so all I need is a connection and access to an SMTP server. I do have a psion.net (lineone) account. Will that be OK to use with a cash card? Again, I expect I'll need something different for Eire.
Any advice would be most welcome.
PS. I crossed the Arctic circle heading south last night, so I'm sailing away from the midnight sun. A bit sad really, but new adventures await!

Subject: Future of Epoc Digest (draft message)
Dear Subscriber,
At the end of April the ups5 digest stopped appearing without prior
notice. After about a week I succeeded in contacting James the
originator of that digest about the disappearance, and he told me that
it was a matter of changing of credit cards and that he would solve the
problems within a few days. Another week went by and it did not
reappear, after which I thought it time to set up something temporary to
keep the digest from totally disappearing. The temporary Epoc Digest was
born.
Today we are 2 months further and from the initial 30 or so email
addresses I retrieved from old digests we are now at over 400
subscribers with the number steadily rising. It appears that we are a
"bunch of people" that are interested in receiving a digest about EPOC
machines and software - as well as future solutions to the disappearing
of the Psion machines - several times a week.
I started the digest totally by hand, and during the course of these 2
month received help from Nicole and Lothar in searching for more email
addresses of possible interested people and sending out emails, as well
as from Rolf who actually almost finished writing a complete program to
easily administer and send the digest from an EPOC v.5 machine and
organise the subscribers list. Furthermore several people offered help
and set up pilot schemes for mail listing, and not to forget Francis
Creese for hosting our website (www.psioneering.co.uk/digest.html).
Well, the ups5 digest did not reappear and the time has come to change
our digest into a permanent one. Taking into account both the remarks
made by many of you about the future sofar as well as the experience of
Rolf and myself in sending the digest out, we decided together that the
current way is the best way to send out the digest. The main reasons are
without any specific order :
- total control by ourselves
- no SPAM or advertising, these mails will be deleted from the digest
- much tighter and better control on returned messages, reason why and
possibility to warn the subscriber of his/her problem.
- not connected to any specific ISP, server or goodwill of anyone, only
requirement is the email address.
- frequency can be entirely decided upon by ourselves (we think that
too many digests a week will dilute the contents and the interest of the
subscribers)
- the novelty factor of running a digest from a 5MX ...
We understand that this is a personal decision of ourselves, and some of
you will agree and others not. We request you however to bare with us,
we think the past 2 month have given you (part for some initial problems
with the BCC field) worry free digests without complaints.
In order to continue the running efficiently we would ideally create a
team of 4 to 6 people to take it in turns to administer and send out the
digest. The few requirements needed are :
1/ Ownership of an EPOC v.5 machine (even the REVO/MAKO will probably
do)
2/ Either an ISP that will hide the BCC field when sending the email
from the EPOC machine or alternatively a PC with an email program
3/ Up to about half an hour of your time for each digest sent, possibly
spread out over 2 to 3 days at any time of the day you like.
For your info, it currently takes about 5 minutes airtime to send out
the digest.
If more people than 6 will react, we will choose randomly the 4 to 6
people needed and keep the others as "reserves", undoubtly people will
"come and go" on the digest. We trust no-one will be upset for not being
choosen, in the end it is only the efficient running of the digest we
have in mind (by the way, the country you live in is unimportant). If
you are interested to help, please send a message to me at
(to keep these separate from the digest messages). When we make the final arrangements, there will be a change of email
address to take my name out of the address (I found out how to "trick"
Freeserve by subscribing a Mr. Epoc Digest ...). The log-in and password
will be known to the team of administrators (so yes, I can drop dead
again ... <smile>).
Finally, no promiss can be made how long this digest will be continued,
but it should surely outlive at least our Psion machines .... <smile>.
With best regards,
Itamar Engelsman

Subject: DATABASE CONVERSION
Hi Guys,
For Lother Kammann re EPOC Database conversion using Psiwin:
After receiving your e-mail I did another two successful conversions to Access using Psiwin 2.3.1 Lothar. Formatting was retained. As someone else suggested, I can only think that your problem relates to the size of your database, and agree with them that you should try saving your file in, for example, quarters before converting. You could then re-assemble the database in Access.
One other possible option is to export your database as a text file (via Word as there's still no Import Text File... option in Sheet [favourite rant]) to Sheet and then to convert it to Excel either using nConvert or Psiwin. Willie van der Merwe did this (the export to Sheet) successfully about a year ago (+/- Apr 2001) and posted the "how to" in the UPS5 Digest. If you can't find the posting let me know and I'll attempt to reconstruct the process.

Subject: Web vs Opera icon, iPass, Off-topic
Well if there is anything more strange than "two dutchies discussing English language" on a Psion digest it is probably a non-Psion owner recommending a program the name of which he cannot quite remember!
There was a program that does "Psion localisation" Psiloc? that has a free version which does a limited number of things , one of which was to enable the user to decide which program opened which sort of file by default. This solved the web pages with Opera icon problem and let me choose my favourite text editor etc. I am not sure if it was Psiloc or another program by the PiBeam people (or both) but it was quite useful.
Now that I use a PC - (the diminutive Sony PCG SRX41P - still fantastically happy with it by the way) global internet roaming is much easier. I signed up with Iberpass, a Spanish iPass member which does not have a monthly charge only a per-second billing arrangement which seems reasonably priced. There are POPs all over the world. (Well I have yet to go somewhere where there is not one.)
I remembered a database and software instructions for using Psions on the iPass network on the Psion site but the link does not seem to work. If anyone succeeds in finding the info it could be jolly useful for travellers with Psions.
(Itamar please delete if inappropriate!) Off topic one of the wonders of travelling with a laptop was discovering the joys of a wireless internet connection at Singapore airport. If you have it built in you a
switch it on or the internet cafe lends you a wireless card and off you go, surfing at broadband speeds free of charge! BT are intending to install 400 of these "hotspots" at railway stations and airports but they will not be free of charge! The trouble with wireless is it is difficult to stop it spilling out of the intended area and I have discovered a network of people dedicated to exploiting other peoples' networks. This sounds amusing and potentially useful and I hope harmless. If you are interested see

I have to credit for this first the CPen support website that guided me to the right site: http://psiloc.com/psion/eng/plbeam/index.html
Psiloc have an application (shareware), called PiBeam that corrects the problem on the MC218, and in fact replaces the old infrared driver with a new one. Now everything works fine and I am able to transfer information I scan on the move with the CPen to the MC218 (and vice versa). Great!

Subject: What's the story on the disconnecting travelmodem
Hi group,
I have just purchased a Psion IR travel modem from Dixons NL. The box looks battered, so it could be old stock. Now, at the discount I got I don't mind, but...
whenever the Psion needs some time and doesn't send something (e.g. Opera is rending a page) the modem decides it does not receive data... and the telephone line gets disconnected!
I know other people have suffered from this as well. Is there a solution? I tried to keep the connection open by leaving an e-mail box open, but that does not help!
Is this because I have an early modem or do all travel modems have this annoying 'feature'?
Thanking you in advance for your advice. I have 8 days to deliver it back without questions asked. After that I have to use the guarantee and with the current state Psion is in... :-(

Just a quick comment on the Mako's ability to hold a charge:
I was recently away for 15 days, traveling with my Psion 5 mx instead of the Mako. (Secure information being a necessity on a trip, I like to travel with the 5 mx, with complete backup on CF card, even though it's a considerably heavier machine.) I charged the Mako fully (a good long charge) before leaving. When I came back it had completely discharged -- that is, there was no screen activity and it would not turn on -- but there was enough residual power that my files were intact. A close call, I suspect!
No alarms were set. All files and programs were closed. I was surprised it had completely lost its charge in only two weeks.

Subject: updated Versions of F1Stats and ERU
Hello,
today I released updated version of F1Stats and ERU.
F1Stats is a Formula 1 Statistik database and ERU is a tool for the Psion Revo that makes the usage of my Revo easier for me. It can also execute Macro5 commands and may be therefore usefull to you.
Cheers
Wolfgang
