Subject: Phoneman SMS messages never reach destination.
Hi
A friend of mine is using PhoneMan with a Nokia 6210. He has the problem that about 50% of the SMS messages he sends via PhoneMan never reach the destination. They do, however show up on his call charges. He has had the problem for a long time, and is particularly annoyed as PhoneMan was one of the main reasons he bought his Mako. Understandably, he is reluctant to register the software if he can't get it to work. SMS messages sent direct from the phone always come through. My friend uses NetCom GSM in Norway. He does have the latest software updates for PhoneMan and the 6210, in fact, he checked the site for upgrades today.
To the best of my knowledge, all MY messages go through as they should. I use a T39m. I previously used the same provider as my friend and had no problems with SMS messages with the T39m / PhoneMan combination or with my old SH888 and PhoneMan.
Any ideas?
Owen

I use a CF Viking 256MB that works really fine and fast in my 5MX.
Re Netbook
Thank you to all that answered my questions about the netBook. I am a bit confused: I don't know what I should buy... I think I gonna buy a notebook or a PC and install the emulator because a netBook is simply too big for me to be carried the whole day and what I want is to edit my word and data files with a better screen and keyboard than the 5mx. All the applications that are on the 5mx are expecially usefull because they are always with me and the possibility to check and write emails on the go.
I would have been glad to buy a Symbian OS product but the netBook doesn't seem to fulfil my needs (printing, CDRom, universality, bigger screen, harddrive). I'm not very glad to think I will buy and use a Micro$oft product :-(
Many thanks for your advices
Guillaume
PS I also think it would be great if there would be future developments for the 5mx.

Subject: RCOM, Old PCs, Cheap CF cards
Hi All,
RCOM:
RCOM was mentioned recently, and I can confirm I use it weekly to backup my S5 onto an old (antique) PC. It does the job admirably.
Old PCs:
Someone mentioned old equipment recently - I have an ancient (c.1990) Packard Bell 286 running MS-DOS 6.20. It still works perfectly and I mainly use it to keep a backup of my Psion files, which just about squeeze onto the 40MB hard disk (increased to 70mB with DoubleSpace).
Cheap CFs:
I was passing a tiny, run-down computer shop today & saw a sign advertising CF cards from UK £9 ! So I wandered in and bought myself a new (Maxell) 64MB CF card for £20 ! Is this the best price in UK ?
CF memory:
Finally - a question. I copied the 31MB of data from my old 32MB CF card to the new 64MB (61MB formatted) CF card and filled up 39MB of space. How is this possible ?
Regards,
Jason

I can't comment personally on 256MB cards, but I have heard that they work fine.
Lexar Media are good make, and are re-badged by Widget Software especially for Psions. I have used a 32MB version for 3-4 years with out any problems.
The only problem you might have is affording the 512MB card when you fill this one up ! However the way CF prices are falling this may not be a problem.

Hi Everyone,
Whilst trawling through ebay I found an auction for a battery starting at £40 with just over a day to go before close. By the time you all get this there should be enough time to bid. If you aren't registered it only takes 5 mins. The URL is:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2037557240.

Hi Tony,
You can get a 12v netBook/S7 battery charger from Clove Technologies for about GBP25. They are extremely helpful and efficient. They operate from the Bournemouth area in UK and, in my experience orders telephoned in at 17.00 friday got to me on Sat morning.
I use the charger when afloat or in the car.

No it's not Psion friendly or Netscape friendly! Unfortunately the only way I can produce a website is with a program which does all the HTML for me,
as I don't have the expertise to do it. I therefore have a choice - do it as it is or not at all. I feel that this way at least users of Internet Explorer can access it.

I belive that I've seen a 'car battery adapter' listed in a Psion catalogue somewhere...
(But I can be wrong)
It shouldn't be too difficult to build one that has 75% efficiency.
I have the datasheets for a 'switching step-up DC-DC converter' IC and only needs to locate suitable supporting components. (Surface mount inductors, condensators and resistors mainly)
The problem?
It's very difficult to find cheap enough components that can handle the power levels we're talking about(particularly in 'one off' packages. Suppliers realy like to sell them in 100 or more lots)
In theory, you could use the battery power when the motor is running, which should provide 14V (if it's less, get a new generator, the old one is crap)
Just watch out for spikes on the line... (They can be VERY expensive)
Another option is to get hold of battery holders capable of taking 10 AA cells, and solder a plug onto that.

That should be:
http://home.c2i.net/trygveh/psion/filer/
Just look for Owen's name.
The files he's made and which would be useful for sailing are:
'Tidevannstabell' - Tidal water information for Norwegian ports. (Ocean5 overlay)
'Kartoverlegg Standardhavner' - Route Planner overlay giving the positions of the ports.
'Navtex' - A list of all NavTex transmitters in the world.
'Time' - A list of Time transmitters in the world.

Thomas, thanks for that. I actually also have an old free.fr address, so back to that it is!

I decided to give it a quick "dummy run" to see if the number was diallable, before i went to France to find instead that I had to dial home! Just as well that I did :-)

Subject: Help with modem script
Hi all,
I am attempting to help a client of mine set up their 5mx to access the
Internet via a Nokia and/or Ericsson mobile phone. We can manage OK with
"standard" UK providers such as BT Click, but he will need to use it
abroad. As they already subscribe to Compuserve, this seemed to be a
logical choice as they have access points in the country he will be
visiting.
However, we have been singularly unable to get a connection, despite
using the scipt available on Mike McConnell's site. I have followed
through the script manually using a PC with a terminal window and the
wait for and reply text seems to be good but no joy. The mobile phone
shows the call being connected and then a few seconds later the Psion
gives an error dialog stating that there was a problem with the login
script and drops the connection. I have tried editing the script and
replacing the wait for "..." sections with simple time delays in case
there had been a subtle change in the Compuserve prompts but no luck.
Also when comparing Mike's script with the cserve.scr supplied with
Windows there was a slight difference in the PPP request but both gave
the same error on the Psion.
Interestingly enough, the successful BT connection did not have the "Use
login script" box ticked and BT also gave problems when I ticked the
script on, despite leaving it using the default script.
Any help gratefully received.

Nigel Colvert
