Subject: Future of Nokia 9210

Hi,

I am thinking about  buying a Nokia 9210, but am concerned about its longevity. When the UK 3G networks are made available in the (supposedly) near future, will the 9210 be superseded or will it be able to have its hardware / firmware upgraded ? I suppose that this is one of the major drawbacks of a combined Phone / PDA platform.

Itamar is very much a ***net contributor" to this digest. When I say that, I suppose I would reverse your own figure and say that his involvement has been 90% contribution and 10% questions over the many years he has been visible here. If Itamar reversed this ratio for a short time - although I can't say I noticed - then I think he is more than entitled to do so. My patience was not at all tested.

Although you are also a "net contributor", I would have to add that I believe your own contributions to this Digest are sometimes quite aggressive in nature. Maybe that's the way it is in the land of Business Analysts in the PDA marketplace, but it's not the way we conduct ourselves here. This is like an extended Psion family, so, please, try to be nice. Oh - and keep the contributions coming!

OK, this from a very non-tech user:

Top 5 apps:  Agenda (synch with office Outlook calendar and specialized to-do lists), Word (for reading and drafting), Contacts (for everything), Sheet (for checkbook record and expense forms), Jotter (for copying stuff to look up later) (all built-ins), and then Macro5, Locker, SolitaireDX, Converti, RMR Crossword (add-ons).

Top 5 uses:  Replaces my address book, calendar, notepad, about 300 lbs of paper I used to have to carry with me (I copy the daily pension reporter onto the 5mx and read it at my leisure), and laptop (I can draft documents on the run, or on the beach).

Wish list:  (1) easy instructions for Macro5.  (2) color screen.  (3) a combination of the 5mx and the Blackberry.

Were you using PsiWin 2.3.3 with Windows XP? You must use this latest version (except for Nicole who somehow managed to use, I believe, 2.3.1

with XP!)

Hyperterminal is an alternative for simple file transfers but, unfortunately, the Revo doesn't have the Comms application and the freeware application Hermes doesn't appear to have any file transfer facility.....unless I am mising something.

<<Am hoping things will proceed in a similar fashion when using the RangerDisk3 external drive if I manage to track one down.>>

I don't think anyone has managed to use one of these unless it can be used with DOS in the XTM emulator.

<<I am trying to use my Samsung A300 with a classic Psion 5........I have tried using the comms app set to Ir with an AT command to get a response from the phone but this does not work either>>

As far as I know there are users connecting with this phone. I seem to recall there were problems when it was first released - the phone couldn't sustain a connection for any length of time but this seemed to have been resolved. Are you using the latest version of Message suite - 1.52 - as

this did include updated IR drivers? It is certainly strange if you cannot even get a response to AT commands in Comms - do the characters you type in Comms appear on screen, as they will only do so if the modem is responding?

<<"The component comms components (TCP/IP) is not present. Install comms components (TCP/IP) and try again.">>

The components are in the machine's ROM but "EPOC Connect" is looking for them in "C" drive and cannot find them, hence the error message. Copy the .SIS file to the Mako (straight copy with no conversion) and run it there instead.

Keith,

I have a 5C (ER3) and also have Alarm+ installled. My control panel has 14 icons in a 5×3 layout.

I'm sure when I had less items it was 4×3, th4 it should self adjust accordingly.

I know this doesn't really help you, but I thought you should know. <BG>

Good idea Victor, mine are Email, Agenda, Data, Web, Sheet & Macro5

Ok there are 6, couldn't decide which one to leave out !

2. Top 5 uses of your Psion?

Email - at home and on road

Reminders - reminding me what to do & when, couldn't manage w/out

Information - I have vast amounts of information stored which I use daily for work and personally

Maps -  I use the lite version of www.multimap.com to find places I don't have a map for (especially when mobile)

Work - all my letters, spreadsheets etc. are done on the Psion

3. Wish List app.

A modern uptodate version of Web

Colour/better Screen

Proper EPOC<-->MS conversion (I use nConvert, but not perfect)

A proper database application

Improved linking of main applications (eg. linking an appt to a database entry or spreadsheet)

I struggled to limit my uses, they are too numerous - I also use, QuickNote & the dictaphone extensively for notes, various games, Alex Skilton's excellent converter, Crontab, Frotz, nConvert, vRule, Ebook, PDF reader, RepEvMail, SaveMail, Phoneman, Spell, postcode database, tube map, street planner etc.

I NEED them all !

"About the battery. Sitting in the airplane with my Merlin battery checker telling me I have 10.5 V left I got my first battery low warning. At what voltage is the battery really low and should I be careful ?  To what extreme can one use the S7 before one gets into "real danger" ?"

Itamar - this from the digest :-

".. even after the red warning symbol starts to flash - mine runs for another +/- 15 minutes. Don't worry about putting load onto your backup battery - even after the machine switches off there is sufficient charge in the Li-on to retain your data on the disk without switching to backup."

".. 'empty' (10V) to completely full(12.6V)"

A great programme for the 7 is ChaDis7 by Kevin Millican .Available as freeware for EPOC. http://www.millican.info/Home/

"A battery status monitor specifically designed for the Psion Netbook and Series 7.

ChaDis7 illustrates 50 hours of usage on a wraparound graph showing details of your charging and battery discharge characteristics and features attractive indicator graphics."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"And another question. On the S7 when I double click on a zip file I get "program not found" while on my 5MX the zip file would open with RMRZip. Why ?"

This is probably because the registration code for RMRZip is tied to the ID number for your old Series 5mx. You'll have to contact  www.rmrsoft.com and see if they'll give you another registration code. However they might insist you re-register and buy it again in order to use it on your Series 7. It varies between different software publishers.

I use Navigator for unzipping and this transferred fine from my MC218 to my Series 7. I now have the updated version which runs in colour!

Hope this helps

Re. Installing  - Yes, I also remembered the problem with the S7 and installing, and just copied the .SIS files to the Psion and installed on the Psion.

Answer to: Tom Robertson

Re. Future - The current range of EPOC 5.0 machines (5MX, Revo, S7) will be discontinued now. There are apparently still the Osaris as well as the netBook and netPad as well as the Nokia 9210 which runs on Symbian  6.0. The netBook and netPad apparently will be continued to be developed but it is unclear whether other Companies will or will not use the Symbian software but for telephone Companies.  As to your 5MX, I think you have the dreaded screen cable problem which will need a repair. If you let us know where you live we can advice you where to have it repaired.

Answer to: Aleck Cartwright

Re. loading Web - Try to copy the .SIS file to your Mako and install it from there.

Answer to: Rolf Brunsting

Re. Codriver - I played around with this program. The most annoying is that once you go wrong somewhere it never corrects itself anymore and you need to reset it manually. Navigator apparently automatically creates a new route, which is a great advantage. I also never really got to grips with it, but surely others will be very satisfied with it (I am more a graphical person an dlike to see the map).

Re. Symbian - I think you are right/ but mainly for the smartphones and combined phone/PDA business. I don't think we will see future PDA's like the 5MX/Revo/S7 with the Symbian 6.0 or future OS's.     And as to the future, I think it is very valid to discuss and fantasize about it without having facts. Not everything in the world is based on facts.

Dear Jan,

I'm afraid you've read the message but the meaning hasn't sunk in yet.

<< 1. the operators can increase the capacity in the cells (how this is done I don't know) >>

By introducing micro and picocells as I mentioned in my message. In other words, splitting a cell into subcells and subsubcells

<< 2. they apply different rules for outgoing / incoming information (mostly they only give you more than one timeslot for outgoing data) >>

It's actually the other way around. For asymmetrical HSCSD and GPRS systems the number of downlink slots (to the phone) exceeds the number of uplink slots (from the phone).

<< 3. they apply a prioritisation of GSM over GPRS which has the effect I described earlier >>

Vodafone may have explained this to you as GSM having priority but it's actually the way I described it - the use of a circuit switched and a packet switched system on the same mobile network.

<<  even in the middle of a data transfer by GPRS, the rule can completely stop the GPRS transfer - I don't get even one single timeslot! >>

That's not the case as no time slots means you're not connected at all. Kits van Heijningen's statement about a zero bandwidth guarantee is bullshit.

<< 4. they admit that the in certain cells where they have noticed a high rate of GPRS comm, they have "reserved" cell space for this type use of the GSM net - so this can be done and its obviously not necessary to apply a "natural distribution" of capacity with absolute priority for GSM over GPRS >>

There is some scope for cell tuning but it's limited. One of the things you don't take account of is the handover between cells when a person moves from one cell area into that of another cell.

Given that a sizeable number of mobile phones still use a cable link it will take some time for Bluetooth to replace infrared. Bluetooth needs to be sufficiently common in handheld computers, laptops and other devices before mobile phone manufacturers can decide to drop infrared from their  design specifications. When this is going to happen is anybody's guess, but it took three years for infrared to become fairly common in mobile phones.

You make it sound as if Nokia, SonyEricsson, Siemens, Motorola and the other Symbian partners and licensees have never heard of marketing and don't have a dime to spend. While Nokia's second quarter 2002 mobile phone sales were €5.4 billion, Motorola's €2.6 billion and SonyEricsson's €954 million. Nokia, Ericsson, Samsung and Siemens have commercials on Dutch television while I've yet to see one single commercial by a handheld computer manufacturer. The volume of magazine and newspaper adverts by the above mobile phone companies put those of handheld computer companies well in the shade. And why would Siemens acquisition of a 5% stake in Symbian (at €22.6 million) in April and the licensing of Nokia's Series 60 platform in May not be a commitment?

<The operating system reminds me of ER5 in a lot of ways - file management, installing SIS files, using short-cuts etc., but it has also been "dumbed down" in a number of areas, and some features have been omitted, such a % battery left, etc. I can't find a switch to turn the Communicator on or off. Open the screen, it turns on, close it, it turns off. Leave the screen open and don't type anything and the machine turns itself off after a few minutes. Somehow I would like there to be a simple on/off switch.>

No doubt we will see some 3rd party software to allow us to switch off our machines when open soon, although I've got used to it now.  I always seem to get the "fridge interior light syndrome" i.e. is it really off when closed?  I totally agree that it's been "dumbed down", no doubt to cater for a less demanding market for versatility.  Unfortunately they have dumbed down the important things for me.  For example, you HAVE to print to infra-red so you can't print to a file - the option to do this has disappeared on ER6.  A lot of things about the 9210 are good but the more I use it (4 weeks now) the more I find my 5mx could do things that the Nokia can't.  Still, the 5mx WAS a dedicated palmtop, not a hybrid.

To Itamar Engelsman:

Subject: S7 report

Good to see you've finally taken the plunge and it's interesting to read about the thoughts of a new user.  I've found it's over 99% compatible with the 5mx - just a few items of software need re-installing or they run on a S5 sized window (but most now autoscale to the S7 screensize or more likely have their own S7 version).  A couple of things I remember from bitter experience.  Firstly, don't carry the 5mx Web program over (easy to forget) as it clashes horribly with the S7's built-in ROM version and don't carry over the Mobile Connectivity Update files (the S7 has these already built-in to ROM) as these can cause IR transfer problems.  One thing I'd like to know (as yours is a brand new S7) is your battery life.  My S7 is over 2 years old now and I used to get a good 8 hours but this has now dropped to 6.  However, this is now with extensive use of IR and an IBM Microdrive (both power guzzlers).  I thoroughly recommend the freeware ChasDis7 for this (if you would like a copy I can send it to you).  More reports from your new machine soon I hope.  Enjoy :-)

My top 5 uses are (1) Control F, for finding & summarising contacts

under various categories, as well as searching out items in Jotter

which has become an informal database for me, and for summarising time

spent on client's work logged in diary entries in Agenda. (2) Second

use is Ctrl163, for entering the "£" sign in my documents on my Mako.

(4) Next is Sketch, which keeps my 5 year old son busy for half an hour

while I'm trying to do some paperwork at home. (5) Finally Cascade,

which performs the same use for my 6 year old daughter.

Why do you think the problem is with the Psion?

1. have you switched on IRDA on the phone?

2. are you certain that it has an IRDA MODEM, not just IR as some older Nokias have?

(You'll need special 'soft-modem' software if that's the case, and that doesn't exist for EPOC)

IF the ROM works(the S7 uses lower specification chips, so may not be able to handle the new speed), you'll still be bound to the 450mA limitation on the PCMCIA slot.

Of course, I have yet to hear about any machine that couldn't handle it...

Here's the steps to do the upgrade:

1. Download the netBook ROM and store it on a CF as 'OS.IMG'

2. Backup the machine...

3. Remove both batteries.

4. Swear because you skipped point 2...

5. remove the righthand cover directly beneath the screen.

6. remove the RAM/ROM module that appeared beneath the cover.

7. Insert the new module.

8. replace cover.

9. replace batteries.

10. Make certain that the CF with the OS.IMG file is in the CF drawer, NOT in the PCMCIA slot.

11. Switch on the machine. It SHOULD load the OS....

12. Restore the files belonging on C:

13. Enjoy!

I bet you're using an old version of Psiwin?

Older versions aren't aware of the fact that such components can exist on Z: (ROM)

Either intall a newer version of Psiwin or copy the .SIS file to the Mako and doubletap on it there.

Yeah...

I once ran M$ Office's spell checker on 'Windows NT Advanced Server' and ended up with ''windows ND avdanka server'.

The Norwegian word 'avdanka' can roughly be translated as 'obsolete', and ND, well...

We ran 32bit computers here in Norway at the same time Psion launched the Org II... (ND is the logo of 'Norsk Data', THE choice of mainframe computer for the discerning russian submarine builders :-)

I use ChaDis7 myself...

12.6V is fully charged. (Don't trust the 'leds, but leave it connected an hour AFTER it turns green)

10.5V is the 'low voltage' threshold.

10.0V is when it shuts off...

The single adjustment that impacts most on the battery is the backlight...

The battery is supposed to keep your data safe for two weeks or so even if it's too low to allow you to power it on.

sounds like RMRZip isn't installed, or that the 'recognisers' are missing.

Tom,

If you use Phoneman, it does recognize the Samsung A300. Go to Tools/Preferences/Phone and select Samsung A300.

I had the same exact results the first time I tried the conversion - only 2 or so records transferred and data all mixed up.

In my case, the empty fields threw everything off.

What I did was add an "X" to all empty fields and the transfer was successful.

Convert your Contacts records into Excel.  Clean up the spreadsheet of unwanted columns and merge cells where needed. (In my case, there were a number of fields where the data in one field was distributed over several cells - probably because I used the "Enter" key even within a field in Contacts.) Fill in the empty cells with "X"'s by doing using the Replace command (Replace - keep this blank, With - X).

Convert the Excel into a CSV text file. (I used MS Access for this as I think there is no direct export of Excel to CSV.  Maybe other spreadsheet programs have this.)

Transfer the CSV file to the Psion.  Create a database in the Psion with the fileds in the exact same order as your spreadsheet working left to right on the spreadsheet and up down on Epoc Data.

Import the CSV file into the new Epoc Data file.  Presto, a successful transfer.

The "pain" is in now having to delete all the "X"'s in the new Data file.

Someone may have a better way to do this.

Someone suggested the "c2f" program.  You may try this.  Email me off-list if you don't have it and I can send it to you.  The author sent me his latest version.

I described what I did in an earlier digest.

Itamar,

Received three copies of the same digest #041 today.  Two of them came with a From and an attached file "winmail.dat".

The third copy came in with a From of

and no attachment.

Any idea why?  The contents of all three are the same Vol. 01 Num. 041.,

Subject: Poll Questions, best of psion applications etc...

1. What are your top five "must have" Epoc apps? [can include in-built

apps] 2. Top 5 uses of your Psion? 3. Wish List app.

1. Top five must have epoc applications are e-mail, jotter, agenda, mobipocket news reader and word

2. I write articles and books on my psion

I download news each day from the internet, FOX news, BBC, CNN and epoccity etc.

I jot down notes in a program called Quicknote, like Sketch but simpler with many pages.

Synchronise PCmail each day to respond and write e-mails away from the office.

Play Psi-Jong and Revertris or read e-books when travelling internationally.

I travel all over the world and need a portable agenda and contacts organiser wherever I am.

3. My wish list application is synchronization software that works better than Psi-Lose so that I can synchronize and back up my psion first time around. I would also like desktop publishing software so I can design magazine layouts for articles and newsletters etc.

Subject: copying data form Excel to Sheet; SmartMedia convertor for S7

In ED#32 Owen mused:

>Hmmm.. I just had a thought. Maybe you could even do this direct from Excel to Sheet with Copy Anywhere?

I just tried it and it worked - of course you can only copy one worksheet at a time, but there seemed no problem other than that.

Also, if you have any interest in the topic you probably know already, but if your digital camera uses SM cards rather than CF cards, a PCMCIA adaptor for SmartMedia cards works just fine in the S7 PC card slot.  Mine's an Olympus card (was about £60 a while back, I think), but I'm sure there are others available.

Subject: NoMore / WinCE / Itamar's Battery / Top Apps

Hi All

Jon and others. If NoMore plays up, you will get a disk corrupt message when you try to read the CF with the app on, the simplest solution is to put the CF in a laptop and delete the NoMore folder

Mick Kilbride. The mist is beginning to clear! I have seen the cab files. What is the idea, explode them and put them in the Windows directory?

However much people slag off WinCE, it can be a sight to behold. I have a networked Win2K pro PC at work. It has an account on the Exchange Server. I have installed ActiveSync (like PsiWin except it always works!) on it and as mails drop into Outlook on the desktop they are immediately synced to the Jornada. As I change the status of Tasks on the PC they immediately change on the Jornada. Amazing! Now all I have got to work out is how I can move the files from the File Sync folder to the 2gb PC card. My life was complete when I found that it even had DOS on it. Perhaps there will be some batch file writing going on soon!

Itamar. I have no idea how low you can let the battery get on the 7/netBook. I run ChaDis in the background and the lowest it had ever gone is 10.5vdc. The battery icon turns red when it is advisable to get it to a charger quickly. Best advice is don't take a risk with your data. Another good piece of advice is to zip the c: drive to one of the 2 CFs that you could have fitted. That way if you are far from your PC backup you can restore from CF. Just make sure that the unzipper is on the CF! Flash people would also back up D: to E: and E: to D: to be on the safe side. The answer is no not yet to anyone about to ask!

Top 5 apps: Agenda, RMRTask, Phoneman, RMRBank, Route Planner.

Top 5 uses: Reminding me how I fixed a tech problem 6 months ago, keeping a list of what is outstanding, managing my phones and SMS, managing my finances, getting there without getting lost.

Wish list app: A simple way to print to PDF to make my files usable by all.

Subject: Atelier CF formatting; Psion accessories and software for sale

Does anyone have Atelier's EDU reformatting program for compact flash cards? I have just filled up my 128mb card somehow, and could do with some space, but I only need to use the damn program once! If anyone would mind lending it to me, I could swap if for some software or something and send it right back. Email me if you can help! Failing that, has anyone seen any cheap 256mb cf cards around? and what about 512mb - would they work too?!

I am selling off some cheap psion stuff if anyone is Interested - spare revo stylus, series 5/mx mains charger (Psion), Palmtop Money, Michelin Red Guide to European hotels and restaurants (works on Palm/all epoc machines), Route Planner Millennium and a very fine brand new Welsh Rugby shirt, but now I'm going well off topic...

If you are interested in any of the above have a search for them on www.ebay.co.uk - find one of my auctions and you will be able to find a link which will display all the others.

Best wishes to everyone - and thanks for the advice on the revo mains charger Toby Butler

Plenty of activity already on the Digest (better than ever) but I'm always up for a poll!

OK - so here's my t'uppence worth:

<1. What are your top five "must have" Epoc apps? [can include in-built apps]>

Agenda, Email, Palmtop Money, nConvert, Solun.

<2. Top 5 uses of your Psion?>

Agenda for keeping me up to date with client appointments, Email for keeping me in touch wherever I may be, Palmtop Money to keep my business in the black, nConvert to turn my S7 from a 90% Windoze laptop replacement to a 99% one (!) and finally Solun because I love astronomy and it's such a simple but enjoyable program.

<3. Wish List app.>

Well, the ER5 software range is so extensive that almost everything has now been covered.  Hardware wise though, I still long for a straighforward 5mx replacement with the following extra features:

TFT colour screen

Built-in modem

Built-in Bluetooth connectivity

Better audio capability (with stereo headphone jack)

Had we seen just one more incarnation of the Series 5 palmtop before Psion pulled the plug on further development we may just have had some or all of these features.  Alas, it is now not to be....but we can all dream of what it COULD have been :-)

Subject: Exporting Contacts to Data

Hello All,

I was a bit puzzled by the recent renewed discussion on this one but didn't have time to check it out. I have a Data file set up with the same fields as my Contacts file and using PhoneMan I can export to a text file and then import this to a Data file with complete accuracy, all data in correct fields etc. I did set different field separators than the defaults (under Options). Try unusal things like Ctrl-135, Ctrl-164 or Ctrl-124 to ensure your data is not upset and (obviously) make sure you use the same ones when importing.

Hope this helps someone.

Best wishes, Chri
