Subject: Synchronising with Microsoft Outllook
I have just changed employer and have a new email address and am now using Microsoft Outlook for emails and calendaring. My old (Lotus Notes Calendar) data has been copied to Outlook, and my old (Lotus Notes) calendar data also sychronised with Psion Agenda (though I could never make the data synchronise with the Lotus Notes equivalent.
I have set up a synchronisation between PsiWin (2.3.3 build 149) and MS Outlook 2000 (build 9.0.02711). However it does not work. The error message is:
PsiSync:
Can't synchronise 'C:\Documents and Settings\sbarnfie\My Documents\My Documents\SGBarnfield\Backup\SGBarnfield\Synchro\Synchronisation.es~' because it is in use.
I have a Psion 5 and and IBM ThinkPad T21 running Windows 2000 Professional.
Any ideas why?

Subject: Getting a website uploaded
Hi digest,
I was hoping someone could help me with creating a website on the Psion. I have some space with my ISP and thought I'd like to create my own home page.
I can write a web page in HTML without too much problem but I don't know how to get it off my Psion and onto my ISPs server. I seem to recall something called FTP is required, or am I barking up the wrong tree ( or just plain barking ;-) ).
Suggestions please.
Regards,
Jason

Like many others I appreciate and value ALL the inputs to this digest. I value your technical contributions.
I am concerned that rather too often your phrases and comments are a little too aggressive in nature - they almost appear as a personal attack on other contributers. Please continue to contribute, though I know I would appreciate it if you were less critical of other contributers - whether they are right or wrong.

Just copy them to anywhere on your HPC then double click on them. They will then install. You will be able to un-install them as usual from the add/remove programs in Control Panel and via Active Sync if need be.

Re EPOC DIGEST V1 #039
I use PhoneManPro on 5MX with the Siemens ME45 without a plug-in specific for the ME45. The PhoneManPro was previously used with the Siemens S35i.
Though you cannot view the addressbook on the ME45 like the way the phonebook is displayed, you can still upload and download the addressbook contact(s) into Contacts on the 5MX.
The inconvenience is that there has to be an entry in the personal info section in Contact before you could upload into the phone otherwise nothing gets thru. Need not fill in all the fields, I normally puts in a letter under the "First Name" field.
Cheers..

To: Itamar Engelsman questionning and about Darryl' option to reregistering RMRZip :
>On the S7 when I double click on a zip file I get "program not found" while on my 5MX the zip file would open with RMRZip. Why ?"<
Re: I had RMRzip intalled on a 5, 5mx and now on a nB whithout having to "reregister".
RmrZip was compiled in the long gone er3 era and often goes wrong on recent larger er5 units: ie rmrZip searching to reopen its last opened file (might be quite long with an IBM microdrive); Navigator icons in place of rmr'one; "not found" msg ...
I discovered the usefulness of :
- Reinstalling RMRzip.sis or, only deleting its ini file.
- Setting (as earlier mentionned by someone in The Digest) "Zip standard" and NOT the default "Zip wiith icons"
- Ctl+L before closing rmrZip; OR
- Deleting the C\System\temp\zip/unzip subdirectory
- For a quicker go, launch rmrZip, not from a large file on a huge drive, but from the extra bar then Ctl+O the file.zip (precopied on C:).
-I finally tied up the zip UID with rmrZip app (using plOpen).

What has changed since 1.09 (1999?), please? It was very ok :-) Used to be on frepoc.de
My experience:
c2f and back from Mac with DataContact
Data file should have identical fields. Exported one dummy file first (numbered and wrote the field-name in all fields) from both phone-managers to use as guide for building and testing a PSion data-file.
Empty fields stayed empty. Exported Mac file to tab(!)-delimited .txt. Manual linebreaks inside entries weren't recognisedatall (< this is what happened...).
Otoh, trying to reimport a cleaned-up export from Contacts (changed some int'l access codes per find/replace in Word) seemed to fail due to linebreaks within fields AND perhaps due to having added fields to records individually (new contact > add) instead of having nailed it from the start.
?
I do not understand this with linefeed vs return vs manual linebreak and how to sort out such (invisible) signs and keep them apart from text.

Re. Defense - Thanks for the kind words and "defending" me. I know Rolf for some time now and we met up as well. I had no problem with his message(s), we all have our style and way of writing them I suppose. However, I would appreciate if we could keep the digest clean of words like "bullsh.t".

Re. Wishlist - Colour screen, get a S7 or netBook, either via eBay or other auction sites or via mailorder from UK. While certainly larger than a 5MX, when I compare the two screens there simply is no comparison. As to Macro5 instructions, what part are you particularly interested in ? What do you want to do that you can't ?
Re. IR phones - The current range of bluetooth phones have also IR. I suppose when the time comes it will be discontinued we Psion users will be "stuck" with old PDA's and old phones <G>. No problem, my 2 years old Nokia 7110 still works great !

Re. Psion - Even if it has been a Holding Company for a long time, it held it's own sub-divisions by itself geared to Psion products. Today that is not the case. Why buy the Company ? To increase one's share and to gain control of the Symbian technology and platform.

Re.: S7 - Still on holiday, my wife asleep, I have some time to answer. Most programs indeed did transfer over, but it is not possible to have the same CF card and just switch between machines, mainly due to Route- and Streetplanner ... . As to battery life, I find it hard to estimate the no. of hours I get from the battery as it disappeared from the info screen. I'll have to install ChasDis7 when back home. However, the user guide does mention that use of the CF and other devices will decrease the battery life per cycle.
What else can I say ? The screen is a great improvement, only wonder whether it will go on forever or get dimmer after extensive use. The keyboard is better than the 5MX, that says something. of course the bigger size makes it impossible to carry on a belt, and I can imagine times I will take the 5MX instead. Downloaded EpocSync but have not yet used it, will come next week too. Good to have the world/time icon back, and the 4 additional touch buttons to put your own choice of programs are a nice addition too. However, would be even better if we could have seen somewhere what program we put there (eventually I'll remember). Streetplanner in colour looks that much better and easier to read/see, but such a pitty it does not print in colour (Psion did it again). Why does Routeplanner not have the same functionallity with colour ? The instruction booklet is as terrible as ever. i had to find out by incorrect typing how to use the numlock and it took me several minutes to find out how to set it back again .... . Altogether I am a very happy user, hope it will hold out for many years to come. Has anyone got a spare battery for sale ?

The files on my 5MX and S7 are exactly the same. Someone else told me it is probably due to the registration only being valid for 1 machine. Vlad mentioned a titanium case on his wishlist. What a fantastic idea. I only recently came across titanium again. A camping mug made out of the stuff, so light that it was incredible. So costly that it was almost unbelievable! A titanium case would have surely sold many more than the mulberry case?
Many thanks to Darryl who sold me a battery for a netBook that he picked up in his bulk purchase. If any of you deal with this guy he sums up the community spirit and integrity of the vast majority of the people on this list.
CoDriver. I also tried this app, but the output from the speaker of the MC218 was no match for the nosie from the 100,000 miles + Frod Escrot that I was driving at the time.

Subject: Re: Top 5
Dear Victor,
<< 1. What are your top five "must have" Epoc apps? [can include in-built apps] >>
I don't really have a Top 5. What I'd put on it heavily depends on what I'm using my Psions for at a given point in time. Some applications may not be used for weeks, for example, but are still important to me. Allow me therefore to list five applications that may not be mentioned that much by other people.
DCLFuel 1.4 by Dave Lee
An application to record car fuel consumption and mileage data. Enter the date, petrol station, odometer reading plus dispensed volume and DCLFuel calculates such statistics as the average fuel consumption since the last filling, overall fuel consumption, average number of miles per day, etc. A very nice aspect is that the application uses a split-pane display. The numbers are in the top pane and the bottom pane contains a graph of (say) the fuel consumption. Reason why I like DCLFuel is that Dave hasn't added all kind of bells and whistles but kept it simple.
Encrypt-It 4.0 by Peter Csutora and PocketIQ
I work for a company that develops, manufactures and sells civilian as well as defence products. Which makes it clear why I use Encrypt-It - to keep work related files away from prying eyes by encrypting their contents.
Allegro 1.01 by Purple Software
Which I use more for it's pen-stroke macro facility than for entering data by means of handwriting recognition. I trust others will point out that Macro5 is much better at this because it's more powerful, keystroke macros are quicker and easier to trigger, etc. I'm not going to disagree with them because what they write will be perfectly true. Thing is that I don't like Macro5 that much. It has the worst user interface of any EPOC application I've ever used. If there's to be a single reason why software developers should *never* be allowed to create a user interface it's Macro5.
StartUp 2.02 by Philip Salvisberg
A tool that allows you to define application sets that can be launched and shut down in one go. Quite useful when you use a number of applications for a particular type of job. You launch them when you start the job and close them when the job's finished.
Mahjong 1.2 by Adrian Collister
I learned to play Mahjong, the *real* Mahjong, from two Chinese exchange students at the Polytechnic where I studied. Many a half hour between lectures was spent/wasted by playing Mahjong. Adrian Collister's version for the Psions is a faithful reproduction of the game. Which makes it the perfect passtime game for me - Pung!!!
<< 2. Top 5 uses of your Psion? >>
Mine is a Top 1 - Using a Psion for jobs other people think they need a laptop for.
<< 3. Wish List app. >>
The applications I wish to have, or wished to have had, are all job related and too specialised to be of any interest to the general Psion user. Like an API and ASTM compliant calculator for VCF, TOV, GOV, GSV and NSV values, for example. Preferably with an IFSF-TGAP interface for prime data retrieval. I trust many will say "A what!?!?!" but I'm not going to explain wha the application would do. I'd, first, need to give them a one-day introductory course on "Automatic Tank Contents Gauging in the Petrochemical Industry".

Why don't you say what this "tried and tested" method is? It might save people writing a setup description that's already been tried out.
The modem definition I have for the A400 and A500 is:
Modem tab:

Subject: GPRS how it works, WAS: Re: GPRS and Psion m
Rolf,
<<< 1. the operators can increase the capacity in the cells (how this is done I don't know) >>>
<<By introducing micro and picocells as I mentioned in my message. In other words, splitting a cell into subcells and subsubcells >>
Or more simply - just adding radio resources to the existing cell. Depends of the cell planning and freq. use though.
<<< 2. they apply different rules for outgoing / incoming information (mostly they only give you more than one timeslot for outgoing data) >>>
<<It's actually the other way around. For asymmetrical HSCSD and GPRS systems the number of downlink slots (to the phone) exceeds the number of uplink slots (from the phone).>>
You can have 3+1, 2+2 as far as I know, Nokia for sure has the option of 2+2 timeslots, i.e. making GPRS a full symmetrical download and upload. Ideal for people sending mail with attachments etc.
Note that GPRS support all the way up to 8+1 (IIRC), its just up to the phone vendors to support it.
<<< 3. they apply a prioritisation of GSM over GPRS which has the effect I described earlier >>>
<<Vodafone may have explained this to you as GSM having priority but it's actually the way I described it - the use of a circuit switched and a packet switched system on the same mobile network.>>
I am pretty sure that Vodaphone as allowed the voice traffic to take precedence over GPRS.
This is done be letting packet data channel (PDC) in the air interface reconfigure them selves to voice channels.
Therefore you can end up with just one PDC available, i.e. Voice-GSM taking priority and is actually reducing the GPRS capacity of the cell. For instance you tell the radio network to reserve 3 timeslots as PDC with the ability to become voice and one PDC to be GPRS only.
<<< even in the middle of a data transfer by GPRS, the rule can completely stop the GPRS transfer - I don't get even one single timeslot! >>>
<<That's not the case as no time slots means you're not connected at all. Kits van Heijningen's statement about a zero bandwidth guarantee is bullshit.>>
Strong wording... Anyway what Jan are experiencing is probably a well congested cell where voice has taken precedence over GPRS (most operators allow PDC to reconfigure them to voice channels if a congestion situation is at hand) This would then cause all GPRS activity in that cell to co-exist on one timeslot only and situation with very long delays might be the result depending on GPRS activity in that cell. Jan don't give up in that situation your IP packet will arrive sooner or later...
<<< 4. they admit that the in certain cells where they have noticed a high rate of GPRS comm, they have "reserved" cell space for this type use of the GSM net - so this can be done and its obviously not necessary to apply a "natural distribution" of capacity with absolute priority for GSM over GPRS >>>
<<There is some scope for cell tuning but it's limited. One of the things you don't take account of is the handover between cells when a person moves from one cell area into that of another cell.>>
What do you mean, why is there a problem when a person moves with an active GPRS session ?
In general when implementing GPRS you have to chose to:
1- Set a fixed number of PDC for each cell.
2- Use the Voice have precedence over GPRS scenario I described above.
I am not an expert on cell planning but I do have some basic knowledge in that field.
For GPRS cell planning there are several things to consider. The most obvious one is if you decide to have GPRS on 900 or 1800 or both. You will also find that the number of cell reselections i.e. handover to the same cell will dramatically increase because since all PDC needs to be in consecutive order for GPRS to work it is a constant job to reorder the voice calls to free up the possible PDC. Not needed if you chose option 1 above.
Altough extending a GSM network to be full cabable of a constant 4+1 scenario today is in my personal opinion comercially undoable, it is just to expensive.
The operators need to find ways to boost GPRS traffic before such a job will be done, it's a bit lite ruuning in circles - Jan has he's problems and gives up on GPRS, Operators needs to see more GPRS traffic before allowing a fully 4+1 network....
Brg

Subject: NOTIFY BUTTON / BATTERY
Hi guys,
For Itamar re notify button and battery:
The notify button is for "snoozing" the alarm. One push = 5 minutes. It's useful for when you're sleepy - you don't have to fiddle with trying to open the rather stiff lid.
The voltage at which your battery cuts out is very dependent on how you use it. When I first got mine, the battery would last +/- 5 1/2 hours in normal use and would switch off within a minute of the red flashing symbol coming on at 10v. Now I get 6 hours and it runs for 15 minutes after the red symbol, switching off at 9,7 v. I run the battery completely flat at least once a month and then charge it for 12 hours as a conditioning charge. You should in any case charge for at least 3 hours if you want a full charge from empty. Don't worry about putting a load onto your backup battery if you run the main battery 'flat'. Even after the machine switches off your main battery retains enough charge to keep your data safe. Operating as I have described, my first backup battery lasted for just over 2 years.
A battery needs to work to be in good condition.

Peter

You should write manage_s_ and not manage_d_! In June, when I had problems with the old version, I downloaded 2.3.3. I was then in Val d'Isere and it took for ever to come in my computer. Then I decided to delay the installation until I was back in London because, in case of problems while installing the new version, I wanted to have the CD of the old version handy to reinstall, because it works well for backing up, exploring and exchanging files between my laptop and my Psion. Once in London, I started reading in the Newsgroups all the problems people were having with the new version and decided to keep using the old one. So I still have 2.3.3 in my computer but it is not installed (yet?) and I am still using 2.3.1 with Windows XP.

and no attachment.Any idea why? The contents of all three are the same Vol. 01 Num. 041., <<

Please accept my apologies for this mishap. I had lots of trouble sending the Digest with one provider. It kept coming back and in the end I had to change provider. I had no idea that some of us had received it, despite the "System administrator undeliverable" numerous messages I got, or I would have removed their email address. None of us in the team had received anything before the last and successful one.
