Hi Itamar,

3G (3rd Generation) is the next generation of Mobile Phone

network to be introduced soon in the UK. You may recall a couple of years

back that the companies bidding to operate the network paid £22 billion for

their licences. These networks should be available from the end of this

year. They offer much higher bandwidth for data and promise applications

such as video and multimedia. If they live up to the hype, they will change

the way we operate remotely, hence the question about the 9210's future.

However, we were promised miracles which didn't happen with WAP so this may

be similar.

Andy

Top 5

I use the 5mx constantly for work - it's become irreplaceable.

Top 5 applications

1.  DATA files (lots of them, various address files, all sorts of searchable data)

2.  STATIONARY PAD -  instant templates for formatted documents

3.      ConvertPro  -  great conversion software, especially when living in a non-        metric country.

4.   JWIN -    great conversion software

5.    Macro5  -  of course

6.  JOTTER

Top 5 uses

1.  WORD  -   freedom to type reports or even trial briefs  in a courtroom, restaurant or anywhere.  More than anything it allows me to work away from

the office without having to carry a laptop.

2.   DATA files -  all sorts of information from books to read, several large address files, all the data from my bicycle computer about bike rides, etc etc.  Above all, DATA files are completely searchable.

3.  I make dated sequential notes about different subjects in JOTTER - it has the advantage (unlike a DATA file) that when I print it, the whole Jotter

file gets printed.

4.    I often have to make conversions from Imperial to Metric, or calculate the number of days between 2 dates - JWIN and ConvertPro make this easy and fast.

<<I can write a web page in HTML without too much problem but I don't know how to get it off my Psion and onto my ISPs server. I seem to recall something called FTP is required>>

With most ISPs, you have to upload website files with an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client. The exception, as usual, is CompuServe who have their own proprietary system and I never did find out how it worked. The ISP will probably require that you upload your "Home" page with a particular name

and they should tell you what it must be - Home, home, Index or index and they may specify whether the extension is ".htm" or ".html". When you first connect to your webspace, there may already be a file such as "Index.html" which you have to remove and replace with your own file of the same name.

For the Psion, there is RMRFTP from www.rmrsoft.com and I would think Neuon probably have one too. Usually they are a two window affair with your computer's files in one window and the ISP's server in the second window so you can just "drag & drop" from one to the other.

Delete any new "Mail" folder the application has created when you first launched it and you should be able to copy the "Mail" folder from your backup into the same location \System\Mail\ in either "C" or "D" drive. If the Mail folder is on "C" drive copy from backup to "C" then you can move the mail store to "D" from within the application.

If I remember correctly, a User Application bar slides out from the left of the screen if you hold Ctrl when clicking on any of the four buttons.

OTOH, when you assign an application to one of the user apps icon, the relative icon is automatically removed from the Extras bar, so to determine wich programs you put there you just have to check which programs are missing from the Extras bar.... <G>

And, by the way, welcome in the S7 Club :-))

Subject: Re: Re: GPRS and Psion

To Rolf B & Emil G

Don't want to prolong the somewhat of topic discussion on the GPRS capacity of the Swedish Vodafone operator. Just two closing reflections from me.

1. As I stated earlier, I'm a true novice in these technical matters. But I'm not a novice when it comes to practical use of GPRS in "field situations". My contacts with Vodafone support & internet staff have been numerous and intense. From that I have learned what is essential here: GPRS comm in everyday use is far from the high speed connection "saviour" the operator claims (and between the lines the operator's department for cell planning also admits this). BTW, the head of that department e-mailed me the other day and said he was eager to have a discussion with me on the problems I reported.

2. Vodafone Sweden tells me that they **do** apply a priority for voice over data comm. It seems to me that I have easily verified this time after time by performing the same task by GSM and by GPRS (using the same cell). The time use rate is for example fairly often 1 to 8 for sending four short e-mails, not to mention the number of times my mailserver has timed out when using GPRS, something that I hardly ever have experienced using GSM. GPRS comm can stop completely for minutes, never happens with GSM. Vodafone also tells me that they have noted problems and that they as a consequence (in certain areas) has started to reserve capacity exclusively for GPRS comm.

And Rolf, I think I said in my first mail on this topic what you "corrected" in your answer: more capacity is given to you downlink compared to uplink (sorry if I mixed up things).

Still like to here if there are more GPRS users experiencing the same problems as I do.

Rolf,

that's not what I said. And I'm convinced that if MS bursts in to the (smart) phone market (as rumour has it) they will allot and use marketing resources to an extent far beyond what the total of companies you mention - don't mix marketing resources for "ordinary" phones with those for smart ones (I have hardly seen one ad for 9210 per 100 ads from Nokia). I'm pretty sure Nokia & Ericsson & Siemens and the others eventually will (have to) come and join such an venture.

Lets see what future brings!

Subject: Problems syncing Psion 5 with Outlook

Hi All

I'm trying to sync my wife's Psion 5 with Outlook. It WAS working fine, but when we came to sync tonight, PSIWIN went through the process of reading the files off the Psion, then I got a message up saying 'synchronisation did not finish properly there may be errors - and the log file option was greyed out. I then noticed it hadn't copied anything to Outlook.

I've tried everything from deleting the *.pst file in Outlook to recreating the diary file on the Psion..nothing seems to work now..but it WAS OK yesterday. Any ideas anyone

Subject: FTP, Macro5 and AgnDump

Hi Jason,

There are often two ways of uploading a site. One involves a program for File Transfer Protocol (FTP). Both Neuon and RMR have reputable programs for the Psion. There are others.

The other way (probably not relevant to you) uses a form on some ISPs websites which will upload the files from your computer.

Some services insist that you use their system but most allow you the freedom to use the FTP program of your choice. The latter is better as the former may mean that HTML code is added, usually advertising something or other. That's one way "free" sites are paid for so don't knock it too much.

If you use an FTP program you are in control and can do more. But there's no-one else to blame if you get it wrong!

Hi Itamar,

I use Merlin to run macros but I have Macro5 installed. I think the helpfile is written for people who really understand OPL32 better than I do yet, which is partly right. But macros are not all written by programmers. Susan might have the same difficulty I do. Writing programs can be simpler.

Hi Mick,

AgnDump might be the program you're thinking of. It was written by Mike Jipping (Kabestin Software, free). It dumps an agenda file as ASCII. I haven't had any reason to use it but I assume it works. If you can't find the website I've got the program.

That's all folks,

Phil.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd just like to echo the comments of Mike Robins re Digest protocol. We are a disparate group of people who all use Psions and who all have a wish to share that knowledge. Some questions get asked on a regular basis as people encounter a problem for the first time that they may not have payed particular attention to the last time it was asked. And some people are more than happy to trot out the (same) answer. No-one is under obligation to answer a query if they don't want to but I'm sure if they do their assistance is  greatly appreciated. I certainly am not very expert in the technical workings of the telecomms/computer side of things and can only offer to share my experiences and suggestions. Some of these may be useful and others won't but I hope my failings will be forgiven ; ) Some postings lately have definitely had an aggressive tone about them which I feel is not in the spirit of the digest and which I for one would rather not see. Nobody should be discouraged from contributing so please can we avoid postings of a negative or personal nature and stick to talking about Psions and not each other. Cheers.

One of the biggest problems for many Psion users is the synchronization with desktop PIMs.  Over the years, PsiWin hasn't been the most stable of products, and many desktop PIM's are simply not supported.  That is until CompanionLink Express! This application supports: ACT!GoldmineLotus OrganizerMicrosoft Outlook (including 2002)Schedule+Outlook Express (yes, Outlook Express!)CompanionLink Express Just as with PsiWin, you can still synchronize contacts, appointments, tasks and memos.

There is support for all major handheld devices including EPOC, Pocket PC, WinCE and Palm OS® devices.  It provides fast, easy and reliable sychronization of your valuable data.

There is even compatibility with all leading Psion EPOC devices (running either EPOC Release 3 or EPOC Release 5).

Yes, you're barking, but luckily, you're barking up the right tree....

What you need is either RMRFTP from www.rmrsoft.com or nFTP from www.neuon.com

nFTP is the easiest to use, while RMRFTP has the most bells and whistles.

(Unfortunately, several of them are broken)

FTP, if anyone wonders, stands for File Transfer Protocol...

There seems to be a slight flaw in the recharge circuitry....

When a battery heats up the voltage will also increase, and the system doesn't seem to take this properly into account.

The battery will therefore reach 12.6V before it is fully charged.

I suggest that as soon as you have installed Chadis7 does this:

1. Let the S7 recharge, then unplug it as soon as the voltage reaches 12.6V/the green led lights.

Watch what happens to the voltage level.

(It'll drop down to 12V almost instantly...)

2. Do another charge, but this time let it stay connected for an hour or so after the green led lights.(Or just leave it overnight)

Unplug and watch what happens...

Nope. If so, the system would still recognise the files, you'd only get a nag screen from the program.

Subject: Future of Nokia 9210

<I am thinking about  buying a Nokia 9210, but am concerned about its longevity. When the UK 3G networks are made available in the (supposedly) near future, will the 9210 be superseded or will it be able to have its hardware / firmware upgraded ? I suppose that this is one of the major drawbacks of a combined Phone / PDA platform.>

This lack of ability to upgrade is about to happen right now with the iminent release of the latest model - the 9210i.  The current model (9210e) cannot be upgraded, one has to stump up and buy the new model.  I would think the future of the Communicator is quite bright.  Sales are good but I don't think Nokia will be thinking about us "upgraders" in such a fast moving market.  I don't doubt we will see GPRS/Bluetooth/3G etc on future versions (and EVEN 16Mb SD-RAM if we're REALLY lucky ho ho) but unfortunately, just like conventional handsets, we'll have to buy a new one.  Even Psion wouldn't do this upgrade service - I remember when the 5mx was first released, there was a lot of talk from us users on whether the "Classic" S5 could be upgraded with the extra RAM, faster processor and new ROM chip sporting ER5 instead of ER3.  Of course, it never was to be.

Reply to Itamar:

You were asking how low the S7 could be allowed to run before there was a risk of data loss or other problems.  I can only speak from my own experience but in over 2 year's of use I have never had a single problem.  I've run the main battery down many times until the machine switches itself off due to insufficient charge.  Amazingly though, the backup battery doesn't seem to get touched and it's the original one and still registers full voltage!  My theory is that although the S7 will "cut off" at around 10v (from a fully charged battery of 12.6v) there is still plenty of power left in the main battery to retain data in RAM without even touching the backup battery.  Obviously this will eventually run down to a low enough level for the backup battery to take over (possibly 2.5 to 3.0v) and the backup battery in turn will run down to a level where the data held in RAM gets wiped as there is no further power source.  I was going to deliberately try an experiment to see just how long my S7 could retain data with a main battery depleted but after waiting around 5 days in this state I got fed up with waiting, plus I needed to use my machine!  So my guess is that when your main battery is so low that the machine won't turn on there is no need to panic for quite some time.  The only thing that I think could be a problem is if you were writing a file to disk just as the S7 switches off, which could possibly cause corruption of the file, but then again this has happened to me before and I've never personally had a problem with losing a file in this way. The 5mx is a very different situation, inasmuch as when its main batteries are low then the backup battery is called up almost immediately to take over (as by then we're already coming down to 2.4v or less from a much more lowly 3v to start with), thus it can't hold data in RAM on a low battery for anywhere near as long as on a S7.  Does this theory sound plausible?

Re. Button - I find it a little amazing Psion planned a button like that just to snooze the alarms without any other function. Without the switching on when screen touched function the nightclock program looses much of it's function, it is too fiddly to try and find the "on" button on the S7 to check the time in the night. I think that will be a function for the continued usage of the 5MX.

Is there a way to change the colours on the screen ? What never happened on my 5MX, I got several times already a memory problem with the S7 telling me there is not enough memory to do something, specially with the MBMView program.
