To all -General-

I am back to work again after a forced upon me vacation (funeral). Thank you very much to all of you who send me a note.

To Marios Haridimou -#030 A couple of questions-

I have had a Lexar with 64MB but was not happy with it at all. I returned it to the supplier. I have had also some other brands as well but it turned out "for me" that SanDisk are the most reliable. I have just bought a 1.0GB SanDisk for my S5mx Pro (32MB). It works like a treat; A little bit slower at starting/closing a program but other than that perfect. Unbelievable, that a PDA that old can handle such sizes!!! Congratulations to PSION and its developers!!! What a shame to discontinue a line that could have attracted business people (...and others) all over the world.

Does anyone use a SanDisk *Ultra* (any size) on a Psion S5mx (Pro)?

I am tempted to buy a CF 512MB to use in my Canon G2 and my S5mx Pro.

To Tony Cabot -#030 NetBook-

I have heard about IrfanView, but I do not know if it is of any use to you.

Please check the following URL: http://www.irfanview.com/main1_de.htm (German) v3.61

To Gary Y Reyes -#033 (DATA).csv to Excel-

Thank you for the excellent explanation. I have tried it so often, but always failed to get it straight. I never got it to work so that all fields in DATA were separated in Excel in individual cells. Now it works perfect. Thanks again.

To Itamar Engelsman -#034 Contact to Data-

Am I glad I decided right from the start to stick with the DATA program and use Contacts... not at all! I even use DATA for email addresses along the the brilliant program Assistant v1.98. Simply by the hyperlink "h".

I tried this with my Nokia 6210 but couldn't get the IR to stay on,  it auto switchs off after 2 mins without fail.  I checked my 6210 handbook & there is no mention of being able to lock the IR on.  The IR icon flashes when trying to set up a connection and stays on once a conection is established.

(I can't remembe how to check the phone o/s version - but I bought it early last year so later phones may have more options).

Hi Itamar,

>Re. Epocsync - I tried it last night and it kept on losing the connection. Now, this might have been due to the long process as it was the first time I synchronised the S7 and 5MX.

I've never had any problems with it (running version 3.03). My setup

only syncs a couple of files from my C:\documents folder and the

contacts file between my Revo+ and my netBook. Maybe the writing to

slow CF memory fouls up the connection.

Hi Daryl,

>Also be interested if any of our more technically minded members can explain difference between Fax Class 1, 2 and 3. All I know is Psions need Fax Class 2 over GSM.

Fax Class 1, Class 2 and Class 2.1 are the means of communication

between the modem (or mobile) and your computer. The higher numbered

definitions opperate on a somewhat more advanced level, moving part of

the encoding and handshaking work over to the modem.

Fax Group 3 (not Class 3!) is the protocol that goes over the wire

between fax machines. It defines the bitmap format, modem protocol, bit

rates, error correction and compression schemes for fax transmissions.

There have been predecessors (now defunct) and there is a seldomly used

ISDN successor (Group 4) for this which are all incompatible to Group 3

fax.

A Psion palmtop should be able to work with any modem that speaks one

of the fax Class definitions. I just tried sending a fax from my

netBook/Nokia 6310i combination to my stationary fax machine. The fax

was printed correctly but both the netBook and the fax machine

complained about some error. This might be due to the network operator

or the mobile, I've no idea. So you might have to follow your fax calls

with a voice call ;-)

Hi all,

I have a simple question.  I have a new cell-phone, an Ericsson

T39m, which I managed to use with my S7.  I configured GPRS properly (I

KNOW as I no longer get the message GPRS not available).  Problem is I

sense no speed gain in accessing my E-mail than I did before without

GPRS.  How can I tell that I am using GPRS and not GSM to receive my

E-mail on the S7?

Greetings all!

For those that doesn't know, the UPS5 digest was a mailing list filled with thousands of psioneers from all over the world. This list died about two months ago when the old Pinkworks server went offline.

Since then Itamar Engelsmann, one of the most active Psioneers on the list, has started a new list.

Those who was on the old list and haven't been contacted been him, and wants to join should send a message with Subscribe in the subject field, and nothing in the body to 'Epocdigest(a)engelsman2.fsnet.co.uk' (Just remember to insert at the correct place :-)

Of course the list IS open to new Psioneers also...

Please note that this list, unlike the old, is run COMPLETELY on a Psion S5mx... (Using a few Macro5 macros, is there nothing these wonderful machines can't do? :-) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Hi Itamar! do you mean a general blue hue light  or the bars and icons colour?

I had the opportunity to compare side by side some 7 and bN and found that the general colour are bright blue on new units and looks more on the red or a neutral side with age

I also had to reset and/or recalibrate "Screen" to factory settings to get rid of colour problems.

Question to QWERTY keyboards users

Why on earth are Qwerty users using Numlock (designed for AZERTY keyboard) instead of CapsView ??

Quote from Pascal Nicolas Site :

"NumLock is a very small utility especially designed for AZERTY keyboards. It Caps locks the first line of the keyboard so that numbers can be entered without having to press 'Shift'.

As with CapsView, the state of the keyboard (Normal/CapsLock/NumLock) is indicated by an always on top icon that can be clicked on."

In defense of the magazine I help produce(!), can I say that:

a) an overwhelming majority of readers we've canvassed have said what a great change of focus it's been. Just about every Psion owner in the world is either looking now, or will be in the future, at alternatives in the marketplace.

b) there are still 39 pages of direct relevance to Psion/Nokia owners, plus we think that if you read the rest with an open mind then you'll find most of that interesting too.

There just isn't enough happening in the Symbian world, let alone the ER5 world alone, to make a magazine worthwhile - we'd have to keep repeating ourselves!

Hope this helps set the record straight. And well done for keeping the Digest going, I do read it when I get the chance.

My personal handheld of choice at the moment? A Treo 270, which combines Series 3-style keyboard, modern Palm OS computer with colour screen and built-in mobile phone. RE. Web - Does anyone know how many S7's and netBooks were sold sofar ? What % of these users are using these machines to browse the web and from these ho wmany would be interested to pay for these plug ins ?  Would you not end up with a small number of people only ? As Rolf explained, most netBook's are used for particular projects and not for general use like us.

Answer to: Darryl Kempster

Re. Nokia IR - Sorry, not on my 7110. When I press the activate button it does not give the possibillity to press it twice but confirms straight the connection, and get a flashing icon.

Answer to: Trygve Henriksen

Re. Colours - The program is called Color Magic, and thanks for the warning. Did anyone use this program succesfully before I try it ?

Re. MBMView - I don't have more than one file open, I use it to read the faxes that are sent from my office by email onwards to me.

Answer to: Michael Degn

Re. S7 memory - Thanks for the explanation, I do have Defragment as well and will try it in future. Unfortunately all these accessories are expensive, a spare battery almost 100 pounds. If anyone has got a spare battery or 16Mb DIMM for sale or hears of a sale in London for same, please let me know.

Answer to: Rolf Brunsting

Re. Psion - Your reasoning is clear and understood. Of course Companies do get bought up after which one part is sold again or closed down and the relevant part to the new owner incorporated in the purchasing Company. Anyhow, it is all theorising. Thanks for the ideas.

Answer to: Toby Butler

Re. GPS - I know that story, from time to time my wife gets mad as well when  I follow the route. But than, driving in a strange city and finding the way impressed her. I hope your GPS will work well, as I had problems with the Palmtop GPS and in the end switched to an eTrex (still have the old one in the boot as a spare).

Re. Broken screen - I don't think the screens from the S5 and 5MX are interchangeable, and the screen comes with the cable connected if I am not mistaken.

Hi group,

SFR France has a very good summer deal for (nearly) every user of foreign networks. Every day until August, 31th between 19h00 and 20h00 you can send illimited SMS's to every phone. I got this from their website. Note that the list of operators are the operators which are NOT supporting this deal. If you have a phone for one of these operators, you WILL pay your SMS. It is also not valid for prepaid carts.

Question: it happens very often to me, that I try to send an SMS with the e-mail programme, it takes a long time, I see on the IR symbol of my 7110 that it is doing something and then it stops with 'General Fault (unspecified)'. If I try it with Phoneman it just sits there, doing nothing, not even an error message. If I try it with the phone itself, it says: 'failed to send message'. What is this? It also very often does work!

I am talking about this error on Bouygues, Orange and SFR at different times, so it is not that it only happens with SFR between 19h and 20h (THAT I could understand, of course).

The tekst:

Du 25 juin au 31 août 2002, SFR vous permet d'envoyer des SMS gratuitement tous les jours entre 19h et 20h, sous réserve que votre opérateur de téléphonie mobile participe à cette opération.

Itamar, you are very lucky with a fully working travelmodem. Mine finally works quite right and I do not suffer from disconnections, except when I start up another programme or sometimes when e-mail takes a lot of time opening a mailbox (it redraws the screen....thinks...jumps to the mailbox...thinks...and finally says 'connecting to mailbox'). I honestly do not know why it does that.

For the rest: I can finally stay in touch in France without having to fear too big phone bills. I can even check out the SFR website ;-)

It is good to have the TM, even WITH its problems.

We all have had admiring glances on our Psions and we were all happy to explain, that it can 'even' e-mail and look at the web. Well, I would like to share my latest experience with the group. On my holiday address lives a 78-year-old priest who stays in contact with his colleagues... by the Internet! He is now on holiday with us and he does not like the fact that he cannot stay in contact with his colleagues. He very much likes my 'petit ordinateur', wants to know all about it (How much RAM? Which OS? What kind of batteries does it use?) and he was even more impressed about the fact, that that small box is a modem which can connect me with the Internet. He is considering of buying a 5mx and a TM, but unfortunately it will be hard to find one. :-(

Yet again a prove that the general public DOES understand that the Psion is the best PDA, if only it gets to actually see one.

I do very much like the idea of a 78-year-old priest writing his sermons on a Psion!

Sorry for the long post. I hope many of use can make use of the SMS offer.

Yours truly,

Thomas van der Zijden

Glad to see that Rolf has taken suggestions that he be "nicer" in good spirit. I think that those of us who speak English as a first language need to understand that for the others the selection of words in a second, or even third, language is not easy. That was probably me....

No, there's no danger of damageing the S7(at least if you connect it the right way around :-)

But... I can't guarrantee that the battery will be fully charged by this method since the S7/netBook draws quite a lot of power and might deplete the batteries so much that the voltage drops below what is needed (about 13V or so)

Please be careful with that program.

It REALLY fucked up my netBook, so much in fact that I had to do a hard reset. (I installed it on C: so when I tried a soft reset, it just loaded the components when it restarted the OS)

That was V1.0, though...

Personally, I use the 'Switch off after 5 minutes' setting regardless of battery or mains power, so it shouldn't be too hot.

Yes, dT is the time(on) since the last time the battery registered 'full' (12.6V)

The other counters are time on batteries and mains respectively since the last reset.

To prevent possible confusion - people won't find a Nokia 9210e outside the UK. It's a 9210 with a few minor modifications Nokia produces for UK network operator Orange. The 9210e model name is thus Orange's. Nokia's own 92xx line consist of:

- The original 9210 for GSM900 and GSM1800 networks,

- The improved 9210i (additional memory, improved web browsing and support for Flash, JavaScript and streaming media) for GSM900 and GSM1800 networks,

and,

- The 9290 - as the 9210i but for GSM1900 networks.

Subject: Re: Symbian OS versus Microsoft 'Stinger'

Dear Jan,

<< I'm convinced that if MS bursts in to the (smart) phone market (as rumour has it) they will allot and use marketing resources to an extent far beyond what the total of companies you mention >>

I still fail to understand why Microsoft is supposedly able to put more money behind it's 'Stinger' smartphone OS than the combination of Nokia, SonyEricsson, Matsushita (Panasonic), Siemens and Psion Group can put behind Symbian OS. If the Symbian OS line-up would have read Alcatel, Benefon, Sagem, Philips, Psion I would have said Yes. But not for the current group - NokIa is already of a size that it can take on Microsoft on it's own.

Another aspect is that the launch pad for the Stinger OS will be the Z100 by UK phone manufacturer Sendo. A small player in the mobile phone market with a low brand name recognition. Meaning that the Z100 is doing double duty by having to place the Stinger OS as well as the Sendo brand on the map. While a Nokia or SonyEricsson can concentrate on marketing the product as their brands are well established. They also have the advantage of an extended product range. Making it easier to persuade the customer to keep buying Nokia or Siemens.

The biggest problem for the Stinger-Z100 combination are the repeated delays. It was supposed to have become available in the shops in November last year. Microsoft, in the form of Roberto Cazzaro, has already mentioned things aren't going well. Cazzaro even admitted that he had "no idea" if Microsoft's smartphone software was good enough to be accepted by the network operators. While Sendo has reported that repeated integration problems are responsible for the delays. The latest one is that Stinger's GPRS protocol stack is unable to keep a connection up and running for more than a few minutes. It's not surprising that Cazzaro was already talking about a new version of the Stinger OS, complete with a new kernel, for release in 2003.

Question is whether Sendo is capable of meeting its latest launch date - October this year. If not, the company misses the lucrative Christmas sales period. While the Nokia 7650 is already in the shops and the Ericsson P800 can appear any moment now.

<< ... don't mix marketing resources for "ordinary" phones with those for smart ones >>

I don't see why. Smartphones have a lot of items in common with their less capable, more ordinary, stablemates. You don't need to put specific emphasis on the these items in your smartphone promotions. You simply use the awareness you've already created with the promotions of these 'ordinary' phones.

<< I have hardly seen one ad for 9210 per 100 ads from Nokia >>

That's logical as the market segment the 9210 belongs to is much smaller and more specific than that for the 3410 or 5210. You don't need to advertise that much but have to very selective in where you place the advertisements.

Subject: Portugal connectivity

Travel advisory: For those of you heading to Portugal with the MC218 (5mx) and a mobile phone, beware. The Compuserve nationwide number 6707 10000 (unique for "classic" Compuserve access) is **not** accessible through a mobile phone network (line drops instantly). However if you use a fixed line modem you get an instant good quality connection.

This is of course not very wise for Compuserve since more and more people travel around with PDAs and mobile phones. Next time do not forget your card modem adaptor and your modem card / I use an old Option 33.6 k from the old 3c days and it works OK. My Ericsson R520m could not follow here...

Subject: HTML & WEB

I wrote my first web page in HTML in Psion Word, then fired up up Psion Web to read it. I opened File and browsed to the file. I received the message that the file can be read in Word.  I ignored the message and told it to open the file anyway.  It did so and I read the file in Web and see it complete with all the tags (as a text file rather than as a web page).

My new HTML book (HTML For The World Wide Web by Elizabeth Castro) says to change the extension to .HTM or .HTML.  Obviously I can't do this on the Psion.

Probably the thing to do is load the Neuon text converter Word to HTML module and let the rest go.

Comments?

Not to forget to compact the '\system\mail\index'-file if you use the eMail-App

This one could be very large, after saving an eMail during editing very often.

Subject: Future

Hi,

It would seem that soon to own an EPOC device would be to buy a handphone cum

PDA. That would move the price up much higher than owning a basic Revo. What

a bummer.

Just recently Dell anounced that they will be producing a Pocket PC devise for

USD 299 and will be manufactured by Acer. At that price, I dont think even

Psion will dare come out with a device that will be more expensive and more

difficult to penetrate especially in the US.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Subject: Battery Charging + 'Drent'

Rolf,

I have to thank you for the explanation of how a battery accepts a charge. My education was 95% literary, so I need a gentle trickle charge for anything technical and you managed it!

I would be fascinated to learn more about Netherlands regional characteristics.... 'Drent' is a place? or a person who comes from a particular area? Are you seafarers? Or tulip growers? Or perhaps cheese makers? Do you wear clogs? Can you dance? Are your herrings sweet or sour? [I had better stop!! I am clearly well off topic...]

yours ever,

Subject: IR modem

Even stronger now. We have a problem with the email system at work and I now use my S7 with IR modem at work to send out messages. The modem connects each and every time without failing, while at home I have quite often problems. So what is different in the office ?

-  different desk top

-  different lighting (no low voltage)

-  different phone line

Bye,
