Not to forget to compact the '\system\mail\index'-file if you use the eMail-App

Hi,

I know it's a bit off topic but . . . . . . .

Someone I know needs a 3 Link serial cable and a 3a User Guide, preferably free (bar postage, naturally). He has a 3a from a sale and nothing else!

The stuff can be sent to me in Godalming, Surrey, UK, or direct if you're in the States. The User Guide can be a file. of course, but the cable not.

Can anyone help?

Happy days,

I use a gold card (global) myself and had experienced some problems at first when I had the speed set at 115200 kb. I didn't manage a connection but received a differnt error message from yours (something with COM Port...). However, when I reduced the speed to 56000 it worked fine. I can't say much about the other settings at the moment, since I don't have my 5mx at hand but it looks to me as if they are the same as mine which are the standard settings for psion dacom modems. There is also a downloadable pdf-file from psion's homepage which provides setting information with screenshots. They also have a wizard for isp settings on their (German) homepage in the support section.

Hope that helps!

Hi Marios!

When I make a GPRS connection from my 5mx via Siemens S45,the GPRS icon on the phone changes to show a connection has been made. Theremust be something similar on your phone I would have thought. The other

big give-away is that if you are still connecting via GSM, you will get theusual connection dialogue on the phone screen with the ISP's dialup numberdisplayed.

My Vodafone UK GPRS service is really quick. When I checked it on

my laptop, it was running at 57+Kbps.

On the Psion, web pages load really quickly - unfortunately sometimes when Istay on too

long I get a "kernel" error and Opera shuts down! I don't know why thishappens  :-(

E-mail downloads very fast, but I have problems uploading an attachment. Iget a

time-out error. No attachments - no problemo...

Robin

Answer to Jim Watson-Gove - Subject: HTML & WEB

> I wrote my first web page in HTML in Psion Word, then fired up up Psion Web to read it. I opened File and browsed to the file. I received the message that the file can be read in Word.  I ignored the message and told it to open the file anyway.  It did so and I read the file in Web and see it complete with all the tags (as a text file rather than as a web page).

My new HTML book (HTML For The World Wide Web by Elizabeth Castro) says to change the extension to .HTM or .HTML.  Obviously I can't do this on the Psion. <

Hi Jim,

The Word file, among others, is UID based, hence there's no extension like .doc etc. And even if there was, changing the extension wouldn't help you any good because the file contains a lot of header and formatting information and would appear as garbage in Web (just like HTML in this Digest). But again, you can't do that on the Psion because whatever extension you would add, it will still be tight to its application. Clearly this Elizabeth doesn't know anything about files and their relationship to their applications <BG>.

The proper thing is to do as follows and actually it's very simple. When you have written your text with all the tags just export it using File|More|Export as text file..., but remember to change the suggested extension from txt to html and save the file and voila it's now a genuine HTML file with the Web icon attached.

Subject: HTML & Neuon

I bit the bullet and downloaded the Neuon text editor on to my flash and have it making Word to HTML conversions as advertised.  I will rename the Neuon files and test to sort out which files are needed for Word to HTML to shrink the memory consumption once I am satisfied that all is working well..

I'm still having a problem.  Using this format in Psion

Word:

++++++++++

<HTML><HEAD>

<TITLE>Watson-Gove Poem

</TITLE>

</HEAD><BODY>

(text of poem here with proper

tags)

</BODY></HTML>

++++++++++++++++++++++++

I then convert it from Word to HTML with Neuon.  Conversion looks good and I end up with an icon for the file that identifies it as Test.HTML.  I pull it up in Web and I have it as I have typed it with all the tags showing.

I thought it might be a problem with Web so exported it to the Dell and viewed it with Netscape.  The tags all show there so I am obviously doing something wrong.

Comments please?

TIA,

jim - oakland

ps - I highly recommend the book HTML For The World Wide Web by Elizabeth Castro.  Much better than HTML for Dummies IMO.

<<My current settings are:>>

You don't say which Psion you are trying to connect with but, as you have selected a "Serial" connection, presumably it is a 5 or 5mx and the Psion PC Card Adaptor. With a 7 or netBook, you would use the setting for the PC Card slot.

The normal reset string for a Gold Card modem is AT&F rather than ATZ, so you could try that. Otherwise, I would suggest playing about with the Comms application to see that the modem is responding properly to AT commands and to try dialling your ISP.

You might find it useful to install John McAleely's little program "The Dialer". This lets you connect to the internet independently from any particular application, a bit like Dial Up Networking on a PC. It will also confirm that a connection has been established before trying to use an internet application such as Web, Email, Opera, RMRNews etc. One thing though if you do decide to use it, make sure that in "Control Panel / Internet" you have a time entered in the box "On exit, stay online for..." which is sufficient to allow you to open an internet application (or in

the case of Email, open a mailbox), otherwise the connection will drop immediately. The Dialer can be downloaded from the "Series 5(mx)" page of my website or there is a link to John's

site for more information.

Also, create the file path C:\Logs\Etel\ and, after your next connection attempt, there should be a log file "Etel.txt" in the Etel folder which might give an indication of any problem.

<<How can I tell that I am using GPRS and not GSM to receive my E-mail on the S7?>>

You should be able to tell from the number you dial to connect. Either you dial an ISP's number to connect via GSM or you use the special dialup settings for a direct GPRS connection via your phone network provider.

Jim,

You can create your HTML page in Word, and then export it as a text/html file. In the menubar choose File: More: Export as text file...

You can then give the file a name and a .htm or .html extension. It will then open up just fine in Web.

Subject: Re: Fax Class 1

Dear Darryl,

<< Finally given up on my Ericsson R520m - modem on all current Ericssons don't support Fax class 2/2.0 but can send via Fax class 1 >>

Are you really sure? I've checked a command response log for an Ericsson T68 I had left on one of my Psions and it responded positively to the AT+FCLASS=2 and AT+FCLASS=2.0 commands.

<< So gonna have to jump ship and get a Nokia as only viable alternative seems to be 6310i. VERY hard to verify if this actually does what my old SH888 did ( Fax class 2 and send/receive via IR ) >>

All Nokias with an integrated data adapter, what others call a modem, support fax classes 1, 2 and 2.0. And you can connect a computer to the 6310i using a cable (Nokia DLR-3P), infrared or Bluetooth.

<< Alao be interested if any of our more technically minded members can explain difference between Fax Class 1, 2 and 3. >>

As there's no Fax Class 3 it appears you're confusing the Fax Group and Fax Class specifications.

The communication between fax devices is specified by a group number and there are Fax Groups 1 to 4. You won't encounter Group 1 and 2 fax machines anymore. It's mainly Group 3 with Group 4 being on the increase. Group 3 supports 9600 bps transmission and Group 4 14,400 bps transmission as well as ISDN.

The communication between computer and fax device, or faxmodem, also has four common standards. The old SendFax industry standard is, like Fax Groups 1 and 2, only of historical interest. Fax Class 1 was the first official standard but needed to be revised fairly quickly. It worked on the basis of the computer doing most of the job which didn't suit multi-tasking systems like the big UNIX boxes. The fax exchange protocol, part of the Fax Group specification, is quite timing critical an it was found that these UNIX systems hat difficulties meeting the timing requirements. The reason for the development of Fax Class 2 in which part of the processing job was transferred to the faxmodem. Modem manufacturers were so keen to equip their products with the new fax class that they put faxmodems on the market before the standard was ratified. Expecting that the Fax Class 2 specification they had would be the final one and ratified unamended. A few amendments were made to the specification, however, and the official standard was ratified as Fax Class 2.0.

<< All I know is Psions need Fax Class 2 over GSM >>

It's not mandatory to use Fax Class 2, you're free to use Fax Class 1 over GSM. What you need to reckon with is that a GSM connection behaves differently from a phone line. Also that the fax transfer protocol wasn't written with GSM in mind. Without going into a detailed technical explanation the situation is that whether Fax Class 1 works depends on a few factors that are outside the control of the user as well as Psion. It's this unpredictability that makes Psion prescribe Fax Class 2.

<< I was told that selecting to activate IR once gives you a flashing IR icon and the 2 minute cut off. But if you select it twice you get a static IR icon and no cut off. Be interested if anyone could confirm this >>

I would be surprised if it worked ... and, indeed, it doesn't. I've just tried it out with a Nokia 8810, 6310, 8310 and 6510. I get the impression that the above is based on a misunderstanding of how IrDA works.

<< One good thing about the Ericsson is the IR port stays on until I turn it off! >>

There are advantages ad disadvantages to keeping the IrDA port active. Nokia adopted one approach, Ericsson the other.

Hi Marios,

>How can I tell that I am using GPRS and not GSM to receive my E-mail on the S7?

The easiest way is probably by checking:

1, Dial string - Should be someting like *99# or similar.

2, The phone should not say "Connecting..." and showing a telephone no. 3, There should be a download counter some where in the phone.

4, Check the last dial no after a connection and verify that it is not the number you put in your Psion.

I havent really used the T39m but I asume that there should be some kind of icon (globe or similar) that

becomes active when a GPRS session is active. Try Wap and watch the phone.

Good luck.

Well my point was to say that GRPS doesnt have to be asymetrical, but it

often is.

Voice-GSM taking priority and is actually

>>reducing the GPRS capacity of the cell. For instance you tell the

If you tried to refer to the things I explained in my message by

writing:

"There is some scope for cell tuning but it's limited. One of the things

you don't take account of is the handover between cells when a person

moves from one cell area into that of another cell."

Perhaps you should try to explain it better next time, since your

explanation doesnt really say much on whats going on. As for GPRS varies

in bandwith - thats pretty common for all "public" IP based access

systems.

I am not defending GPRS in anyway - I am only trying to explain whats

really going on inside the network.

Not very important but, I still think that it is impossible to say that:

"Splitting up cells tends to be the better solution" because that

depends on freq. reuse, available freq. site allocation etc. It all

depends on that geographical area and under those particular

circumstances.

I have also found out that is it possible and AFAIK pretty common that

operators use the configurable PDC on all 4 PD channels which then

reults in a total loss of GPRS access in case of a congestion situation.

To recap:

<<Vodafone may have explained this to you as GSM having priority but

it's actually the way I described it - the use of a circuit switched and

a packet switched system on the same mobile network.>>

False, Voice do take precedence over GPRS.

<<Kits van Heijningen's statement about a zero bandwidth guarantee is

bullshit.>>

Incorrect, Kits are right under the conditions above, that I feel is

realistic for a number of operators.

I hope things are a bit clearer now, and perhaps people reading the

digest have some background info why GPRS behaves like it does.

Until next message <G>

Trust me when I say you WILL know, the difference between a basic GSM connection & GPRS is considerable. If you can't detect a difference then I would say you are connecting on GSM.

You need a new modem setting for GPRS have you set this up ? I can give you the settings for connecting on Orange in UK, but I suspect you may not be UK based. Let me know if you are, otherwise I'm sure someone on the list will have settings to use with your mobile provider, if you ask.

Some Nokia codes to help:

Firmware version, enter *#0000#

IMEI, enter *#06#

Activate EFR, enter *3370#

Deactivate EFR, enter #3370#

Note: Activating EFR improves send and receive but uses up more battery power.

Hope these help.

Re IR switching off.  If you are transmitting to the phone over IR, it should not drop out.  The 2-minute cut-off is there to conserve phone battery - IR can be quite draining.  On the other hand, if the connection cuts off in the middle of a transmission, that is another story altogether.

Re : Networking cards in Netbook

Several people mentioned the use of Ethernet cards in the Netbook

First there are two types of Ethernet cards available : "NE-2000"- compatible ones and "3c5**" -based ones

NE-2000 appearsto be the industry standard (sorts of ) ,while the others the "3c5**" based ones are proprietary

The "3c5**" denomination is a giveaway here as it is the abbreviation of 3Com wich is the only manufacturer of such cards

The "3c5**" type cards *won't * and *****never**** will work in a StrongArm-based machine like the Netbook/Netpad (hardware incompatibility issues ) the NE-2000-based ones will work fine

Power consumption

Even with a current handling abiity in excess of 450 mA it is strongly recommended not to use cards that draw more than about 200-250 mA otherwise your battery operating time goes down the drain

Another issue here is overall life expectancy of both card and device ,thermal stress can cause premature component failure

Warning about the Socket Low Power 10 MBit Ethernet card

This model has the ***exact*** same connector as our beloved Psions so you could accidentally think it is a Psion-compatible serial card and wonder that you coulld not get any response from the modem .....

But worse you can now plug in the Ethernet lead into the Psion's own serial port and silently fry it because of ground loop potentials

Otherwise -presence of drivers permitting -this card should work fine

Maybe "Fax class: Auto" is the problem. Create the directory

c:\logs\etel and try again. EPOC logs the traffic to and from the modem

in a file name etel.txt which will hopefully reveal the problems.

4. Away from the office document reader

5. Comms tool for email & SMS

Wish list

1. A programming tool like VBA but which integrates all the application (I'd like that for the PC as well). 2. A better than 5MX screen.

Subject: "Not found" error message

Hi, whilst I was on holiday both the main and backup batteries expired on my 5MX. No great problem as most data was on a CF card and I could restore the rest from a recent backup. However, now, everytime I switch on I get an eror message box that just says "Not Found" (with just an "OK" button)... no program name, no other information. I can get rid of it but it comes back when I boot up again.

Has anyone else come across this? How can I track down the cause so I can get rid of it permanently? The only program that (I'm aware of) gets launched when I boot up is the Batcheck freeware program which I've used for ages with no problems.

Subject: Agenda File Dump, Psiloc+

Hi Mike,

Um . . . print to a text file . . . that's too simple, surely? (I don't need to export my agenda file anyway!)

PsiLoc+ is tied to a single machine and I think this is one of very few programs that can partly justify it. Unfortunately the nice people at Psiloc+ have stopped developing for ER5 and are now known as PsiNT. Pity.

The only other program I have that uses that system is TomeRaider and I will soon have to register that for another 5mx.

I didn't know about the BBC service. I'll try it today.

Hi Jim (Watson-Gove),

I'd use "File/More/Export as text file" and use an .htm(l) extension then. That should work.

Good luck,

Phil.

Subject: Memory hungry programs

Hi everybody,

I just wondered where all my memory went when opening my standard programs so for once I opened them one by one by hand and took notes. I started with 6.0M:

Email      0.2 M

Agenda   0.1 M

Crontab   0.6 M

Merlin     0.7 M

Macro     0.8 M

Assistant 0.9 M

and was left with 2.7. Quite amazing how these assisting programs take up this much <G>

Re. Hyperlink - Thanks for that one, I had not yet looked at that possibillity. Certainly an easy way to start an email.

To All:

Re: Nokia IR auto off - I tried as well and failed. Can anyone else confirm they succeeded with this ? Is it maybe one particular Nokia phone instead of all models ?

Answer to: Marcus von Cube

Re. Fax classes - The possibillity to send faxes depends also heavily on the modem used. I remember that I never succeeded with a USRobotic modem, my old travelmodem was not ok but my Nokia 7110 was no problem.

Answer to: Jack

Re. Colours - I meant the bars and icons. I installed the trial version of Colour Magic and I find the change quite pleasing to my eyes. My buttons on the toolbar are now soft yellow, more contrast to read them, the Merlin toolbar is also yellow and a smaller font, I still have to play around with it. I might well decide to use it permanently.

Answer to: Steve Litchfield

Re. PalmUser Magazine - I did not complain about the actual change, you are quite right that it makes sense. I just thought that a/ the subscribers should have been prewarned and b/ given the opportunity to unsubscribe with refund of any outstanding issues. But forget about it, it is not that important. Personally I'll continue another year and than judge whether to stop or not. As you said, have an open mind.

Re. Treo 270 - Is the keyboard really comparible to the S3 one ? On the photo in the magazine it looks considerably smaller. I suppose my main problem with all these machines is the lack of the large enough screen to easily work on WORD and SHEET files.

Answer to: Thomas F.VAN DER ZIJDEN

Re. SMS - Maybe the obvious, but you do know that each network has it's own number for their SMS centre which yo have to change around in the settings ?

Re. Travel modem - Working now with this modem at work, I found out that in the afternoon when the sun shines into the office it works badly, but when I close the curtains it works perfectly again. I am quite convinced it has to do with light shining onto the IR windows, reflection from the desk (try it with a white peace of paper between the modem and Psion and it will have difficulties I think) and certain types of lighting (low voltage ?).

It appears that the failure of Psion is mainly due to unawareness of the public of the advantages of their products. All too late now !?

Answer to: Trygve Henriksen

Re. Colour Magic - Thanks for the warning, they are now at version 1.02. I installed it on the CF disk and sofar no problems. However, you can always set it back to Default which gives the original Psion settings.

Re. Email error - Thanks, it was a f.cked up email and I deleted it via "www.web2mail.com".

Answer to : Jan & Rolf Brunsting

Re. 9210 ads - In the UK we see regular advertisements for the 9210 in the newspapers and magazines like TV program ones, supplement magazines to the week-end newspapers, etc.

Answer to: David Bernstein

Re. Holland - This is off topic, as short as possible. During the centuries Holland was a big seagoing country, trading worldwide but specially with the far east (Indonesia), 17th century was called the "Golden Century". Traditionally we were tullip growers as well, and in the 17th century there was even a tullip boom much like a stock market with people investing in tullips until the market exploded and people even committed suicide. Today the country is very much a 21st century one. Clogs are warn only by farmers on the land, cheese is still made but very much in factories and not the oldfashioned ways, herrings you get both sweet and sour. It is a modern and well organised country, the economy has been very stable over the years, linked to the German one due to the close trade links and long border). It is definitely worth a touristic visit. [end of off topic]

Re. Barclays - Did anyone succeed with the Opera webbrowser to connect to the internet banking site of Barclays Bank ?  It would be the only advantage for me to use Opera above Web.

Subject: Lost icons on Extras bar

I've been a bit stupid.

Getting frustrated with the apparent inability of the ExtraBars

application to hide application icons on the 'real' bar of my 5mx, once

added to the 'Extrabar', I uninstalled the program before resetting my

choices within ExtraBars.

The result is that 2 or 3 of the applications do not now appear on the

'real' extras bar.  They are all present within the Applications folder

and all fire up from there.  The (rather old) FAQ section on the

author's website  admits that not all applications can be hidden, but it

does not cover my present problem.  The strange thing is that I have 2

Steve Litchfield games - Golf and Team Psion, one is present but the

other not, even though neither had originally hidden when I tried to.

Can anyone guide me to recover the shortcut icons, or must I reinstall

those programs to get them to show.

With thanks in advance,

regards

Philip Carlisle
