Subject: EPOC PDF / Zipped Archives
Hi All
Two problems blight my horizon at the moment. One is personal and one is computer related. Both, I hope, can be sorted in time.
There has been a reasonable amount of interest in the EPOC PDF idea and many have offered to contribute. I don't have a website, nor possibly the time to administer one, so my questions are, would people prefer the PDF file sent to them direct, or choose to download it? The other question is about the content. Pictures or no pictures?
My laptop has just wiped all of the Digests prior to no 54 (please don't send them to me!) so the idea of zipping up the archives in stacks of ten would be useful to me at least.

The Dream 5mx. You wrote would I pay the extra for an updated 5mx or go for the old model?
If I was looking for an updated 5mx, the answer is probably yes. Given the colour TFT screen and Li-ion battery.
I used to use a S5 classic until the screen suddenly stopped working. I then upgraded to a Series 7. I needed a machine with a colour screen, and good keyboard. The S7 accepts CF cards and also has a PC card interface - which I like.
When I had the S5, I found the screen hard to read and because of this I always used the machine under a desk light. I also found that my S5 was too power hungry.

Subject: Post dated email
I've noticed a few times that when I send email from my S7 the recipient has said it had been time-stamped about an hour later than when it had been sent e.g. I'd send one at 7.10pm and someone with a continous internet connection would ring me up just 20 minutes later and say it's been received but time-stamped at 8.10pm. Obviously I've checked the clock setting and the S7 is set at Home Summer Time. I thought (although I may be wrong) someone once mentioned there is some bug in the EPOC ER5 Email program that it indeed does this when using some ISP's (mine is Freeserve). Can anyone shed light on this?

Subject: Psion RAM upgrades
Hi,
David Lir asked about memory upgrades.
I had my spare 5mx upgraded to 24 MB RAM by D & G (http://www.pda-upgrade.20m.com) and it didn't noticeably affect power consumption. D & G are ex-Psion engineers and their upgrades are very reliable.
I wanted 28 MB but some 5mxs can only accept 24 MB for technical reasons - unfortunately mine was one.
D & G were very quick and very helpful. If asked I would recommend them.
Good luck,
Phil.

Subject: NETPAD ANSWERS / KITS
Hi Guys,
For Owen re netpad:
Price - gave it in the final part - roughly USD 2 000 in the RSA. May vary widely from country to country.
GPS connection - you would have to use either the RS232 port on the netpad itself or the one on the dock. The dock is not as robust as the netpad but is much more solid than the netBook's dock. As for stability of the combo at sea, I can only offer you my opinion as a former submarine commander who has sailed some of the roughest seas in the world. You would have to secure the dock to your chart table (or similar) in some way. The netpad is locked into the dock if mounted correctly. In my professional opinion, the netpad would not fall, or be shaken out, but you should take out insurance by securing the whole combo with something like a bungee cord.
RS232 corrosion - You know as well as I do that, eventually, virtually any metal can corrode at sea. It would be wise to treat the connectors regularly with an anti-corrosion agent.
Finally, I haven't seen, or used, another handheld computer that I would trust in a marine environment as much as I would trust the netpad.
For all re Kits:
It's with regret that I have to support the team's decision to ban Kits - his motives were certainly suspect. Hopefully he will not try to do something silly.
Regards,
Peter

Answer to: David Lir
Re. Colour screen - I thouhgt just like you, but after I started to use the S7 I changed my mind. The colour screen is that much easier to read and use that my 5MX now seems very dull and difficult to read / use.
Answer to: Kevin Collins
Re. GPRS - Phone Vodaphone and make sure the tariff you are on allows you full internet access. You probably only have got WAP access and not full internet. I had the same problem and technical support sorted that out by moving me up one tariff.
Answer to: ALL
Re. Nigerian SPAM - This SPAM is not limited to email, years ago already I received these messages by fax.
Answer to: Alex
Re. GPS - I think the eTrex from Garmin is one of the cheaper ones. I use it regularly with my 5MX and it works a treat, just great. It connects within a minute or two and just does not fail. I bought a cable to connect it to the 5MX and both to the cigarette lighter with the same cable. Recommended.
Answer to: Peter
Re. netPad - My question is, do you think it would be a proper and good replacement for the 5MX ? Also, why do you think this will give us more faith in Psion ?

Can you explain just how I do that? I looked in the Menu/Print section, but didn't see anything about "print to file". Does it work only with Psion's built-in apps? Seems to me that if I want up print a Psion file after my Psion has gone to the great beyond, I'd just use PsiWin's Convert and get a MS Word, Access, or Excel file, then print it. I'd like to print a 3rd-party file.
For my purposes, I'd probably go for the cheaper, current 5mx. I'm perfectly satisfied with what it can do for me. I've had lens implants in both eyes, so the screen doesn't bother me. :-) And I love, love, love, the alkaline batteries.
For a moment there, I had heart failure when I started to read Arent's post. Nigerian, Angolan, now The Netherlands scam? :-)

Kevin, I’d pay UKP 400 for a 64MB 5mx EVEN WITHOUT colour screen, modem,
Bluetooth, touch screen, or sound recorder . . . IF it had ‘reasonable’
built-in file translation and transfer software for PCs and Macs, . . .
AND had a more reliable screen cable, . . . AND it could still run on AA
batteries.

Subject: Diary/Journal App for EPOC?
Hi All
I am looking for an app that I can use as a daily journal, I am
currently studying a course in ornithology and need to be able to record
my sightings. I use data at the moment (With the fields; Date, Place,
Time, Species and notes) but I need to export my info into a word
document, and data does not do this too successfully (or maybe I am not
coniguring it properly?). Also, the 250 character limitation is a real
pain, I remember an Epoc magazine that came with a reader called
Dragonball, which did not have this limitation. Is this a commercially
available app?
Any ideas are welcome.

Subject: Compaq 2010c Palmtop Computer - First Impressions
For those of you considering retiring your Psion and are looking at this
machine or it's black and white screened sister the 810, herewith a few
notes;
* It is larger than a Series 5 machine, I know some people consider the
5 pocketable, but this one is NOT.
* It is equipped with a rechargeable Ni-MH pack which gives about 3
hours of on-off use. The colour screen is great, but comes at the
expense of constant recharging. The 810 uses 2 AA alkalines, but I
cannot comment on usage times.
* The keyboard feel is awful, the keys are badly spaced, and all in all
cannot compare to the 5.
* The hinge on the screen is not stiff enough to hold it still while
using the stylus, so you have to support it with one hand whilst tapping
the touch screen.
* On the plus side, it has a built in 33,6 software modem with handy
RJ11 jack on top.
* Built in PC Card slot for type 2 cards, supports SCSI, networking,
modems, storage etc.
* Pocket Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook and Internet Explorer are
familiar and contain some small niceties missing from the Psion's built
in apps. I use Data on my Psion extensively so Pocket Access was sorely
missed.
* I have never had a problem with Activesync, can't say the same for
PsiWin.
Overall it was fun playing around with Win CE but have given the 2010c
to my partner while I march on with my trusted and familiar 5mx.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your support. It's a great relief that the Digest members do agree with our decision. We hope we did the right thing. Personally I don't like to see people trying to undermine the hard work of Itamar and the team.
Well, Kits is still out there. He tried to subscribe once again, but was wiped immediately.

Hi Keith,
Now you scared the hell out of me <BG>
If such an incident is to happen again in the future I guess we should include a warning (we really don't want to loose our members that way!!!).
