They've just repaired my Diamond Mako. It's better than new.

PRINT TO FILE ON NOKIA 9210
I'm really hoping that someone will sooner or later write an additional program to allow the 9210 to "print to file". Sure, I know it is now possible to print to a PDF file but I want a plain text file (as on my old 5mx) to allow further editing after printing. How difficult would it be to do this? I really miss this option on the print menu!
Reply to Itamar Englesman:
GPRS SHEET
Many thanks for the GPRS Sheet file. Unfortunately, when I try to open the file on my S7 I get the following dialog box popping up - "unexpected end of file" and I can't see any data. Any ideas? BTW, if anyone would like a copy of my own 5mx battery performance statistics, please feel free to ask and I'll send it to you (only 12k in size).

Subject: 1.Any more cheap Makos in the USA? 2. Newsletter format question
Last year I bought a Mako from Outpost.com for $99 + shipping + UK VAT (chargeable on the machine and the shipping!). I realise that their operational life is finite, and now would like to obtain another one as a reserve. Does any Psioneer know of any sources of these now in the USA (or anywhere else, for that matter)? I recall someone mentioning that they were being sold for $69 at one time, but I cannot remember where from.
As a thought on the format of the newsletter, would it be possible to have it sent out in a plain text version for reading on Psions and, say, a HTML version with hyperlinks from the subject list at the start of the newsletter to each posting, for those who read it on their PCs? Or would that be very labour intensive for Itamar and the team?

Steve Hodgson wrote in EPOC DIGEST V1#066 “I thought I was one of the
few people to still have slide rules around the place! I even picked up
a giant Faber Castell a couple of years ago that looked like it could
have computed those NASA trajectories. At the point when I finished my
high school education one could very occasionally see some still in
use. It's interesting that my Psion machines are slowly sliding into
the retro-computing category now. I was recently playing with a HP200LX
and wondered at just how capable a machine it was and how simple things
were back when I bought my first Organiser II back in the 80's. One day
I will have to do actually do something with all these old gadgets!”
Somewhat of topic, but for Steve and others, there is an active slide
rule collectors’ forum at , with some 600 or
so respondents. One of them tracks all eBay sales, and posts summaries
on his website as a guide to values.
The Oughtred Society publishes an excellent twice yearly Journal
containing articles devoted to slide rules, their manufacturers, and
their histories. It has over 450 members worldwide, and helps host
meetings in the USA and Europe
Colin Barnes, at Ely, edits ‘SkidStick’, the
newsletter of the UK Slide Rule Circle, which will be hosting the 8th
International Slide Rule Collectors Meeting at Leamington Spa, 25 & 26
October, 2002. There are similar groups in Holland and Germany.
The Japanese ‘Concise’ company still makes several models of circular
slide rule, and has just started an English language website. There are
still several makers worldwide of pilots’ circular slide rules for
navigation, and several makers of specific purpose ‘slide chsrt’
calculators, which are usually specialised slide rules.
In Australia there are also little groups of afficionados who have
formed Computer Museum Societies, and enjoy getting old hardware to run.
I’m sure the UK would have similar groups.
Hope this helps

Hi,
I was doing some spring cleaning on my S5c and noticed loads of files in the System/Messages/local and remote folders. Most of them are 0k. I have completely cleaned out all my Inbox and Sent message folders etc. so I was surprised to find them there.
Can I safely delete them ?
TIA.

Subject: New netBook OS?
Ajai,
I also saw the following from PDA Geek: " And in the "from out of left field" department, Psion Teklogix has announced an "enhanced netBook with GPRS". Sounds pretty sexy until you note that that "the latest edition has an enhanced version of the Symbian OS and supports GPRS and ISDN PC cards. Psion has improved support for all types of fixed and wireless networking and added the latest version of the Opera secure web browser." Smells like a software fix to me. A couple of months ago they finally released a version of the OS including Ethernet support and supposed support for 802.11. I could never get it to work on my Orinoco gateway at home, though. (Anyone else have success?) Anyway, though, it sure is nice to know that Psion's keeping the best and most reliable of their product line going - the netBook is still a nice machine that is not yet outdated."
Now the question is; where is the new operating system. I went to the Teklogic website where I used to find earlier operating systems under "operating systems" but that page has disappeared and I couldn't find any reference to operating systems. Anybody have any ideas?

From PMN newsletter:
"05 September 2002 -- Psion has announced an updated version of its netBook sub-notebook device for enterprise markets. The netBook uses the Symbian OS and provides a near full-size keyboard, colour screen and a full suite of PIM, productivity and communications applications. The latest edition has an enhanced version of the Symbian OS and supports GPRS and ISDN PC cards. Psion has improved support for all types of fixed and wireless networking and added the latest version of the Opera secure web browser. Psion no longer manufactures consumer handhelds, but the popularity of the netBook in enterprise markets has ensured its continued production."

Hi everyone!
Has anyone succeed in getting netBook to connect to GPRS via Siemens S45 ?
My SiemensS45 works very well with 5mx, but with the netbook I get either "Disconnected" or "Comms line failed".
Maybe anyone here succeed in connecting those two devices?
Could you please share your experience with me?
Thank you in advance,
B Rgds

<Re. Fanzine - Colour printing ? AFAIK that is not possible even from the S7. For digital photos I seem to remember there is a special program for this. Look at page 53 of issue 35 of Palmtop Magazine and on page 28 the program SFX to store photos, see www.stampark.co.uk.>
Thanks for the info on SFX. Colour printing (in a limited form) is indeed possible using Andrew Johnson's colour drivers for the Canon BJ-80 machines. I've got these installed on my S7 - alas I've only got a black and white printer at the moment so I can't try these drivers out :-(

>As a point of interest, during the course of my work, I have received some pages of A4 as a PDF file from the printers (as a proof). The file size was 390k for just two A4 pages!
The file size in PDF very much depends upon the quality of the original material, and also whether it contains drawings or photos or screen dumps. If there are illustrations, it will almost always be large. If pages are done in
text only, it is possible to make PDF pages that are smaller than the original ASCII. Adobe Acrobat can provide excellent compression if given a really clean file. Even the free PS2PDF utility that comes with Ghostscript does
a pretty fair job (about 30% larger than Acrobat 4 in my experience). However,
I'm not at all sure that you can get that sort of result if the original files were done using MS Word, as it produces very messy files when used
normally. I can certainly produce two A4 pages with sizes under easily
under 10k. It may be interesting to see what sort of results Sander van der Wal's Epoc to PDF printer driver gives.
>Although a PDF magazine is a great idea, do we want such a large download? Even if the file is zipped, the file is still likely to very large. Also
all recipients of the PDF magazine would need an Acrobat reader.
The reader is free for Windows and Mac, and there is a free but feature restricted reader for Epoc from mbrainsoftware (as well as the shareware version). Provided the PDF doesn't go past say version 1.3 of PDF, any
of these (and most Unix, OS/2 etc) readers should work.

>A colourscreen on my 5mx, absolutely brilliant great fantastic thrilling wonderful - yes, yes, yes, I want one!!!
Well yes, a natural enough reaction. However are we talking about a
backlit colour LCD that is great at night or in dim rooms, but it unreadable in daylight (like the netBook), or are we talking a reflective colour display that works great in daylight, but isn't as bright in mid level lighting?
Also,
will the battery life still be acceptable. The netPad seems to get about
6 hours (and you do get a choice of whether you want the daylight style display or the dim lighting display since there are different models).
However the original battery was 875 mA, and I don't know if it was a
low voltage thing at maybe 4 volts, or whether it was 12 volts like the netBook. If it was 12 volts, then it packed more energy than a pair of
AAs, which indicates a 2 to 4 hour life from AAs.
It may even turn out that what some people want from a Psion 5 is
not so much a colour screen, as a grayscale screen that can be more
easily read in dull conditions. I'm of two minds about that myself,
because I basically can't use my Series 7 in daylight (for a bright,
tropical example of daylight, I must add).
>I don't think that there is a big demand for an inbuilt solar power
charger among psion users.
I've attempted using various solar panels with 5mx and with Series 7. You don't get sufficient power from any that are portable. I'd suggest the only approach would be to solar charge rechargeable batteries, and use them afterwards. That way only the cheaper solar gear is exposed.

I can't see one in my listings, however there are a few computer
algebra systems, some of which may have part of what you seek.

Microsoft removed IrCOMM from Windows after 98/ME. It was never in NT,
nor 2000 nor XP. You could probably use PlBeam or CBeam to do an IrOBEX
file transfer, however that won't work with PsiWin, which needs a serial port or a close imitation of a serial port. You may be able to get an add-on serial
port (maybe Belkin USB to serial) for your notebook, and that would be the approach I'd suggest (well, actually I'd suggest never buying a PC that lacked a serial port, but too late for that advice).
