Subject: SCREEN CLEANING

Hi Guys,

For Itamar re screen cleaning:

You'll probably get a hundred different answers, but here's my 2c worth. I remove all the dust and grit from the screen using a lens blower brush. About once a month I clean the screen with a clean, dry lens-cleaning cloth. I usually get these free of charge from opticians by either being very polite or very charming to the sales assistant, depending on gender.

Recently, after over two years of intensive use, the screen was looking decidedly grubby, so I used a few drops of Isopropyl Alcohol on the cloth. Result, imaculate screen.

My philosophy - prevention is better than cure, and less is more when it comes to cleaning a handheld computer.

Peter

Dell.  Will the 720 print to a printer direct (cable connection)?  I

know the earliest versions of WinCE didn't support printing.

>

>jim - oakland

The short answer is Yes, you can print directly from the J720/728.  I

routinely print from my J720 to my HPLJ4m via the cable from HP.

There are 3 listed drivers:  PCL Laser, PCL Inkjet, PCL (HP Cable).

SOunds like they are PCL-centric, but then I didn't expect anything

else from an HP computing product at this price.  Not every

application provides for printing. I couldn't print out this replay

email, but I could print out the original received email.

Re: purchase of a JAmazon for  $459 (?).  Welcome to the

HPC2000!  Be sure to look at Textmaker (

http://www.softmaker.de/index,en.htm  ) and ListPro (

www.iliumsoft.com  ) and InkspotCE ( www.dejavusoftware.com ).  The

Collins dictionaries also run under the HPC2000 OS.   I still find

uses for the Psion 5mx though.  The Palmtop N.L. Money program on the

Psion 5mx has no equal in a handheld computer.  I even paid full

price for 2 copies of it.

BTW, I have a Palmtop NL GPS module for the Psion 5MX languishing in

my basement.  I thought I would be traveling more - am traveling less

now.  Any offers?

Subject: RE: Jornada 720 touch screen vs Psion failures

David,

<snip>

... Also, similar to the sometimes maligned 5mx, many Jornada HPC

owners online have also reported having to replace their handheld's

screen after only a year and a half or two years due to premature

digitizer atrophy, malfunction or death. I've also heard of Jornada

screen cables breaking too. I'm sure most owners never will have to

experience these problems - but it's not just Psions which have such

problems - unfortunately :( Still I am a big fan of the 720 and 728!

(But I like my 5mx even more!)

>

After my touch screen digitizer failed on the J720 and was repaired

under warranty (LCD screen assembly was replaced), I noticed that the

newer screen has a lighter touch than the other two I've been able to

use, if however briefly.  I have noted that the "hard" push that is

necessary sometimes seems to be due somehow to the OS, not to the

sensitivity of the screen in that exact spot.  Another WinCE'ism I'm

afraid.

Nevertheless, back to the subject of this digest:  I have to admit in

some 4 copies of a Psion 5MX I've never had a screen failure of any

type in over 4 years.  A keyboard from one 5MX has been popped out of

place so many times, I'm getting really fast at slipping it back in

to it's slides.  I've had over 6 copies of the RevoPlus or Diamond

Mako, and I've had only one battery related problem and that was

heavily used by my daughter in college.  I still have 2 Psion 5MX

units, but I'm down to selling my last Revo because of the

rechargeable batteries in general, not because of the single failure.

The run time on a RevoPlus before having to recharge is just too

short, and the self-discharge of the inaccessible rechargeable

battery of the Revo really confused other members of my family with

random usage.

Dear Peter,

<< Give Itamar a break Rolf, a message informing all subscibers of the change of address for the digest went out on 19 July 2002. I still have a copy of it >>

The sequence of events is as follows.

Digest no. 65

Mike Fellhauer asks when the digest's new e-maill address has been introduced. It's when I become aware of the address change.

Digest no. 66

Itamar Engelsman replies to Mike Fellhauer that the address change has been posted on the digest. I check my digest archive, because I must have overlooked it completely, but can't find such a message. I therefore write a reply to Itamar in which I describe my findings.

Digest no 71

My reply is posted and I receive a copy of an e-mail of July 19th, with the title "Epoc Digest admin update", from Tony Cabot and Eric de Bruijn. Don't ask me why, but Tony's copy is the first I've seen. I never received the original.

Digest no. 72

Itamar replies that there has indeed been no mention of the change on the digest, quotes the relevant section of the "Epoc Digest admin update" e-mail and posts a separate 'for the record' reminder. Michael Degn and Jason Garbutt post messages referring to the "Epoc Digest admin update" e-mail.

Digest no. 73

Peter Keene, Eric de Bruijn, David Lir and Jim Watson-Gove post messages referring to the "Epoc Digest admin update" e-mail. What's more Peter Keene effectively accuses me of harassing Itamar Engelsman.

I think it's best to consider your "Give Itamar a break Rolf" as 'not written'.

Errrmmm ... depends on whether and how much you used the optional printer module. I've used HX-20s as a service tool and data logger for Enraf's old CapStock and 843 Series of automatic tank gauge controllers for petrol stations. Printing instrument response graphs did hit the batteries hard., reducing the number of hours to about six (from memory)

I own a 10 MByte Psion branded SanDisk, a 40 MByte and 128 MByte SanDisk plus a 256 MByte SanDisk Ultra. The Ultra is indeed faster than the other three. Thing is, that the Psion reads the directory tree and the directory contents when you want to open or save (say) a Word file. The larger the disk the more extensive the tree and the more files, negating the speed advantage of the Ultra. Reason why I don't experience that much of a difference when I swap the 128 MByte card for the 256 MByte one.

Sorry to sound linguistically pedantic, but it's best to put a repeat of words between quotation marks. Specially when you don't quote in a traditional fashion. Consider the following as a reply to a message about the netPad.

a) Why will the netPad increase our trust in Psion.

b) Why will the netPad "increase our trust in Psion".

Sentence (a) signals that you belong to the group that can do with some increase in trust. Sentence (b) signals there's some distance between you and the increase in trust - that the "Why" is more of academic interest.

David,

>I'm glad that you're enjoying yourself ;) , and thanks for that bit

on your use and enjoyment of the 720 :) You mentioned that you still

use your 5mx - could you expand on that and tell us why the 720

hasn't totally replaced your 5mx?

>------------------------

>David Lir - \\:>{o>

Well, OK, you asked...

General background:  I can accept needing a desktop somewhere to load

SW, and maybe to back up to.  I do not like any system that cannot

run independent of the desktop for long periods of time.  I use a

laptop running Win98 - no problems.  I expect to be able to print

from the HHC to a laserjet.

Targeted needs:  Home & hobby finance & PIM, Work PIM.

Work: engineering, IT support, also 3rd level support for all types of

PDA/HHC units.

PIM functionality needed:  I use separate units for home/hobby and for

work because I have multiple overlapping meetings or events at home

and at work.  It's easier to use 2 separate HHCs than to use

catergories to keep them all straight on a single HHC.   I have a lot

of reference files and notes.

email:  I use all POP3.  However, see below for the PalmVIIx.

Color?  I'm ambivalent.   It looks cool, but I'd rather have the run

time on batteries instead of a color screen.

Currently used HHC (HandHeld Computer) OS types:  PPC, HPC, EPOC,

Palm.

DOS:  HP200LX.  The HP200LX used to be my  PIM for company work.   I

sold off all HP200LX units, although was just as good as the EPOC OS

for stability.  Nice system, but slowly losing compatibility with

where I was being forced by my company and by hinge failures - every

one of them eventually suffered hinge failures.  When the unit was

repaired, the new screen had noticeably worse contrast & readability

than the original late-production model HP screen.   The eyes are

getting too old so I gave up.

EPOC ER3 or 5:  Psion 5MX.  Very stable OS!  Our home HHCs for

personal finances.  Palmtop Money is the best of all HHC money

programs!  The Collins foreign language dictionaries are used by

everyone in our rather "polyglot" family.  One daughter in college

extensively uses the  Collins English-German dictionary with the full

and  "Easy Learning" forms  that are not present for the other OSs.

Since she is a singer, the English-French and English-Italian are

also used.  This is my backup for getting email if necessary.

EPOC ER5:  RevoPlus. This was my carry-along PIM for home/hobby use

and sync'd via EpocSync to the 5MX.  After my only battery failure

(cable), and because of my HP200 experiences and by reading

newsgroups extensively about  problems with clamshell designs, I

decided to abandon any clamshell HHC for PIM usage.  I've sold all

but one Mako, and that's about to go.

PalmOS:  Palm Vx.  My current work HHC for PIM.   I use QuickOffice,

HandDBase, etc.  It isn't a clamshell - no hinge to fail.  It uses

rechargeable batteries, but the run time could be a couple weeks, so

I frankly don't pay attention anymore.  The iPAQ users at work are

absolutely neurotic about battery run time - can't run for even a

full day of their usage - No thanks!   For that matter, the Revo

couldn't make more than a few days w/o having to recharge.   I can

keep up with any meeting notes using a Palm folding keyboard - very

nice.   Handwriting recognition on any PDA - Palm or PPC - just

doesn't cut it for more than a few words or short notes.   Desktop

synchronization is the strong point of the Palm Desktop - far better

than the quirky ActiveSync for PPC/HPC units from Microsoft that

locks you in to MS Outlook.

PalmOS:  Palm VIIx/i705.  for wireless email independent of the

company.  I'm playing around with this.  Much better than the

Blackberry or Motorola T900 2-way pagers systems.  You can actually

control the urls and email addresses with the Palm.net system - not

so for the Blackberry or T900 units.  The Palm network uses packet

radio & Cingular (I think).  A major advantage of the Palm.net system

is that you can also access conventional email sites besides the

In this respect, it's better than just using POP3

email.

PalmOS:  TRGPro.  Home & hobby PIM.  The CF card is filling up.  It

will accept up to a 1gig CF card.  Backups are easy and transparent

to the CF card.  It survives well!

HPC2000:  Jornada 720.  My first foray into the Microsoft

understanding of a handheld OS.  Somewhat erratic and needs a soft

reset about once a week.   All that screen space is nice!  I use this

for my connectivity - LAN, web, email, newsgroups.  Wireless

connectivity via PCMCIA 802.11b and a Citrix client to the company

LAN.  Reasonable compatibility for referenced documents from the

company.  Need to use TextMaker for actually creating documents due

to severe limitations in Pocket Word.  ListPro is a "gotta have"

application - Sort of an outliner and project planner all in one.

Newsgroups via InkSpot CE.  Foreign language dictionaries from

Collins.   No acceptable finance program has been found.  I want a

standalone finance program, not something that forces you to a

desktop

PPC2002:  Jornada 568.  Nice hardware - much better than the iPAQ.

Battery life was actually OK - better than the RevoPlus.  This was

supposed to be my work PIM.  I discovered that the higher resolution

screen was actually less readable than the B&W Palm units because the

fonts were thinner and smaller.  My eyes are getting old.   I'm not

really sure what to do with this.  I keep it to play with, but no

real usage now.

Enough?

Yes, 3.12 is the latest version, available at

http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Bridge/1492/

<<

When using SaveMail to store messages, the Mako always switches itself off halfway through the third message, while the MC218 always completes SaveMail without timing out. The settings for system timeout on the Control Panel are the same for both machines, as are the settings in Merlin which I use to launch SaveMail on both machines. The only difference is that I've set Merlin to provide a longer timeout for the backlight on the MC218, a setting which is not appropriate for the Mako.

If I turn the Mako on again, it will continue executing SaveMail without any problems, so there's no great harm done, but it is annoying. I believe Sergio reads the digest, so that's why I'm asking here rather than direct to him, as I expect other readers may benefit from the answer.

This sounds quite strange, I've got only the PC Emulator and my MC218 to make some tests and the problem doesn't arise, given you set the right system timeout to let the macro complete its tasks... But I'll try to put my hands on a Revo and check it!

I simply don't. It's bright enough to shine through the stains...

netBook serial port:

I have a hardware problem with my serial port. I know, it's not the PC and it's not the cable (checked out different combinations of both. My 5mx still connects fine). I can send single characters from comms to a terminal software on my PC but only at 9600bps. Higher speeds

cause bad characters. PsiWin does not work!

Has any of you ever encountered the problem and knows what a repair might cost?

PsiWin via IrDA COM port:

my NT 4 box (a Thinkpad 600) runs IrDA COM emulation software which connects fine (on the IrDA level) to my netBook but PsiWin does not connect at all. Do any special settings help? PsiWin is at version 2.3.3 (build 149). The NT IrDA software is by Extended Systems. I can exchange single files via IrOBEX.

I loved the Org II.  It was way ahead of it's time.  For a start, you could pretty much use it one-handed, like people do with phones nowadays.  Imagine if it's full A-Z keyboard layout was adopted on smartphones, you wouldn't need all that farting around with T9 text entry or handwriting recognition!

Apart from running my life on it, I used to do a lot of OPL programming on it.  I found it much easier than the later ones, to write programs which had the same style as the built-in ones because the whole machine was that much simpler.  I wrote a sort of 'today' screen for it which would step through any upcoming appointments & user defined reminders whenever it was switched on together with a switch-on password.

I even wrote a simple hierarchical task list editor - a kind of outliner - for it.  To write an equivalent today for my 5mx (but with a level of functionality in keeping with today's apps), I'm finding it very heavy going.

Now, I use my 5mx for running my personal life, my consulting business & various work related tasks while working for clients.  I only use my PC for keeping backups & for large emails & downloads.

Dear Christian,

<< The Siemens FAQ says: GPRS only via Cable, Infrared means an ordinary CSD connection. My, is this all stupid >>

Siemens has a bit of a reputation when it comes to the data communication facilities of its mobile phones. The decisions it made regarding the ME45 are par for the course, I'm afraid. Which is a pity as Siemens' phones are well above average in other respects.

Dear Peter,

<< Err.. not quite. There's also the Intermec 6651 (manufactured by Sharp) and numerous other vertical market machines >>

I could add a long list of other Windows CE, SIBO, EPOC and PalmOS based industrial handheld computers. Thing is that most of them are too specialised to be of any interest to the general consumers that make up the bulk of EPOC Digest subscribers. What would a consumer do with an integrated laser barcode scanner, for example? Though Psion-Teklogix' netPad may be a good choice for somebody who has mountaineering as a hobby.
