Subject: SSH or VPN Client for Series 5MX / Manual screen cable replacement
Hello!
Has anyone come across a SSH Client (or even a VPN Client) for ye grande 5MX?
I found one called "syossh" - but it doesn't work, and I couldn't find any documentation for it.
I am hoping to find one that will support tunneling so that I can run the Citrix ICA client through it. Fat hope I guess.
This query has come about because I am now using GPRS on a Nokia 6310i in Australia with Vodafone, and have learned that GPRS can only be used back to the network provider. I was rather hoping to have a GPRS data connection back to a V.90/56K/ISDN connection into some office equipment. Vodafone said that there may be news on this in the future - but can not say if & when GPRS could be used to locations other than an internet connection through Vodafone. Is this the same in other countries too? Can you dial anything other than *99# with your GPRS??
If I am going to access the office systems through the internet, then I will need to use a VPN or SSH.
Thanks for any feedback.
PS. Vodafone Australia GPRS charges are Aus$0.02 per K, which is about 0.71 pence per K. Session connect fee is 18 pence.
No idea what a Euro is! (Well I do, but no idea what the conversion rate would be.)
PSS. A colleagues 5MX screen cable failed recently. We had all seen this with 5's, so it was a shame when the first 5MX also went. Has anyone had success with sourcing a replacement cable "kit" for manual replacement? I am happy (although reluctant) to take the machine apart - but I do have a Series 5 and a colleagues 5MX to experiment on before my 5MX will need it!! ;)
POS (UK) seem to get great user reports, but the repair cost is high - especially when you pay in humble Australian $'s.
Thank you & regards,
Antony Steele.

Fair enough, it's been a while since I read any reviews TBH.

Fair enough, It wasn't a good phrase to use, I agree.

If you see what I mean.

Yup, it's excellent, I'd be very surprised if you had any problems with it.

Series 5 - 9 months. Psion replaced the complete unit as the paint was peeling too.
Series 5 - 14 months
5mx - 19 months
Replacement still OK, but I've hardly used it.

No, but if you were to directly compare it to a 5mx then you might. But in reality I don't find it a problem at all (I don't have large hands either).

Can't say I've ever thought it was, but it's not something I do a lot.

Depends on the apps, but I generally have 5 or 6 on the go with no problem. The 680/90 could sometimes run into problems but nothing too serious.
The biggest problem is usually poorly programmed applications causing hanging. Palmtop were particularly bad for this, their CE ports of Psion applications being quite appalling at the start. Coded applications cause little or no problem at all, just as with Psion apps I guess.

Yup, no problem - assuming the equivalent apps are all well coded.

Subject: NETPAD RUNNING WINCE
Hi Guys,
For Mark Bridge and Thomas Ullrich re netpad running WINCE:
There has been a WINCE SDK download for the netpad on the Psion Teklogix website for some months now. As I posted after my netpad review, it makes good business sense for Psion to offer a WINCE alternative because of the predominance of CE machines in the the US vertical market. Obviously companies have invested heavilly in CE applications.
It's good news for us as EPOC users because it means that the potential market for the netpad will be much larger, which means more potential sales, which means more viability for Psion, which means more chance that we will have EPOC machines into the future.

Subject: GPRS charges & Vodafone
Itamar mentioned that Vodafone had told him that GPRS charges were GBP 2.35 / Mb irrespective of whether he was in the UK or in Europe. I was told that the GBP 2.35 charge was a 'promotional' rate for Europe and that charges abroad had recently reverted to their 'standard' rates, which were a maximum of GBP 8.23+VAT (GBP 9.67) per Mb. UK charges vary according to your chosen tariff (or 'price plan', as Vodafone insist on calling them) from around 18p per Kb to 73p per Kb.
Having said all that, I've not had my first GPRS bill either... <G>
Best wishes

Dear Christian,
<< it seems that Siemens just always needs some time, even a year after the product initial market premiere, until everything is sorted out >>
Most phone manufacturers come with firmware updates to eliminate bugs. Still, Siemens has made some strange decisions in the past, Fax Class 1 support being but one example. And the SL40 was a real oddball in its infrared support. It's the reason why I never went for a Siemens phone as there was always an unexpected surprise of the 'Why did they do that?' type.

Dear Matt,
<< Just wondering...what's the maximum Compact Flash capacity used for a Psion 5MX >>
Wouldn't surprise when there is a limit to the CF card capacity EPOC based Psions can support. We seem not to have reached this limit yet as people are using the largest capacity cards currently on the market - 1 GByte in CF Type 1 and Type 2 format. Type 2 being the IBM Microdrive miniature hard disks that can be used in the Series 7 and the netBook.

Dear Peter,
<< Consider what you like, it WAS written and I meant it >>
It appears that you don't believe the sequence of events as I've described it. I'm afraid there's not much I can do to make you change your mind. How am I to prove that I didn't receive the e-mail you referred to? And that I was unaware of the digest's change of e-mail address till Mike Fellhauer asked a question about it.
<< Unfortunately, you don't seem to have got the message - your posting to Itamar in # 75 goes beyond pedantism to verge on harassment >>
I don't always succeed in getting accross what I want to say so that I have to try again.
<< I wanted to make the point to you about how irritating it is when somebody corrects you all the time? It seems that it worked >>
When the aim of the message was to irritate it hasn't worked as I wasn't irritated at all. Talk about Windows CE in a general sense and you need to include industrial handheld computers, PLC management stations and even a petrol dispenser. Thing is that I didn't write about Windows CE in a general sense.
<< To make the point one last time: have you done a survey to determine the demographic profile of the subscribers to the digest? Or is that an assumption? >>
I don't need to make an assumption. Most of us mention what we do in our private and working lives in the course of message exchange. I've just responded to a message in which Mystery Man Matt mentions the reason why he's interested in large capacity CF cards - he's a teacher and wants to store a lot of work related data. While I've mentioned to have worked in industrial instrumentation and technical support in past messages.
Then there's the subject matter of the messages exchanged. When a large number of digest subscribers would use industrial handhelds and vertical application software we'd see this in what they ask and write about.

Dear Itamar,
<< But would it have been cheaper even when using it only in the UK ? >>
Sorry, can't answer this question as I'm not familiar with the tariff structures of the UK mobile operators and what the roaming charges are. I think it's best that you keep logging data volume and call duration information for an additional two or three months. Also what you do, whether you browse the web, send a fax or exchange e-mails. This gives you a better idea of your usage pattern and is the kind of information network operators can use to propose the most cost effective talkplan.
<< Wow ! Being on holiday in the UK you can still give a subscriber settings for a variety of conditions ! Do you always travel with all this infor on you ? >>
I was bitten by the mobile communication bug when Michael Baas sent a CompuServe forum message from Italy using a Series 3 and a Nokia 2110 (I think this was before your time). What I started was a small Data file with information on using Psions in combination with mobile phones. This database has grown a bit and currently contains 3,663 records. I also have a range of documents published by the mobile phone manufacturers and other sources. Needless to say that I'm a subscriber to the news services of a number of mobile phone manufacturers plus some independent news services. Interesting news items and press releases are stored in a separate Data file. A third Data file contains mobile phone related messages from Psioneers as published on Usenet and ... the EPOC Digest.

<< Does it read the 'Path' down to the directory or the whole disk tree, even if re-saving a file without closing it? >>
I can confirm that it is only when presenting a dialog box for opening or saving the file that it reads the whole directory tree. This does not happen when saving a file directly from within the application using 'Save' (Ctrl+S), or when closing a file (Ctrl+E) or when opening or creating a file in the current folder from the system screen.
For instance if you use 'Save as' or 'Open file' or 'New file' from within the application, a dialog box is presented, which allows you to step through the whole hierarchy to select the required folder. On my 5mx with a nearly full 128Mb SanDisk CF which was formatted in the 5mx, it takes 10 seconds to show the dialog box, then if I press the 'Tab' key, it takes a further 30 seconds before the fully expanded hierarchy is shown. But it saves files in usually less than a second. This is obviously dependant on factors such as how many files are stored on the CF, but it may give you some idea what to expect.
What I'd really like to know (but probably can't find out) is, would it take longer with the same files on a bigger CF (& by how much) & how much quicker would an 'Ultra' CF of the same capacity be & whether (& how much) the delay is dependant on fragmentation, cluster size, make of CF, etc, etc.
BTW, in theory, you should be able to reduce the delay by choosing NOT to show the 'System' folder, in the System screen preferences. However in practise, I find it makes hardly any difference.

Hi,
Rolf (B), if you're not socially responsible why give all that Psion stuff to a museum rather than throw it away? : ? )
When you wrote "Donating old PDA gear to a worthy cause is something I'd like to recommend to all EPOC Digest readers" it sounded very socially responsible, even sensitive and sensible.
I'm not criticising, far from it. I have given stuff to museums too and they were as grateful as Delft Museum of Technology was. It's very English to be so self-deprecating - did you enjoy Durham so much that you became a little English?
Someone, perhaps John Betjeman, once described those cathedrals as rockets to carry the faithful to heaven - what a wonderful idea! Outside Britain I've only seen Cologne cathedral and El Duomo in Florence. I've seen a few English cathedrals though - Hereford's interesting, Salisbury's spectacular and Ely's tower takes some beating. I've also seen Truro, Winchester, Chichester, Bristol, Bath, Arundel (RC), York (Minster), Guildford (old and new), St Paul's. Southwark, Westminster (Abbey really; the cathedral's RC), Worcester and Lincoln. I'm not really a christian myself but all places of worship are fascinating.
At least you are writing from a part of England that is truly beautiful if rather mountainous. The Roman castle at Hardknott Pass is a good place to go, the view is marvellous, and Lal Ratty is interesting (the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway). The Welsh mountains are beautiful too. Cambria and Cumbria are very closely related, and not only as words. Cornwall too.
And you're a reader who hates throwing books away. Actually I have only thrown away one book myself (of many thousand) and that was so badly written that even I didn't want anyone else exposed to it (the subject was better covered elsewhere - I'm no censor). It wasn't by William Shatner. Others were given away. And I hated it.
And you're only as old as you want to be - never as old as your birth certificate says - I know.
Almost all of which is off the topic but what the hay!
Happy days,
Phil.

I have been backing up my C drive fairly regularly to a CF. I put the whole thing in a folder entitled "Backup". When I go to delete it, I'm told 'invalid name'. When I try to just delete everything in there, it tells me that half the applications are in use and can't be deleted, yet I don't have anything open except the system and Agenda. I can delete other folders on the D drive (CF), but not the Back-up folder and most of what's in it. Changing the name didn't help. Any ideas? TG

Often I must enter a given hotkey 2 or 3 times before a macro will run. EB works great for everything else - including the remapping of icons, but for the running of Macros it really seems to be inferior to M5. M5 has absolutely no problem running any of the macros I use - the first time I enter a hotkey. Anyone else notice this?" Extrabars can really be a nuisance. I have eventually given up using it for Macros. Although I didn't have that particular problem there were many others. When I had to specify a macro seting (shortcuts), giving the path of a file it would need, EB sometimes refused to accept it and stayed at C:\... to which I then had to copy the file - but at other times it worked. Deleting or changing hotkeys was what really finished me: If I made a change EB reacted most strange; it seems not to allocate each hotkeż to a specific macro but rather to pile them up: a change near the bottom and everything tumbled - hotkey 1 was with macro 2, hotkey 2 with macro 3 or one which never had one. I'm now having all my hotkeyed macros at Macro5 and no more problems. Other features are also far from perfect: hiding programs from the 'real' extrabar works hardly ever (NoMore always!), backlight control could be better (like PsLights e.g.). PS: I still like Extrabars for apps or files (just a pity I can't change file icons). It took me a while to register because of its imperfections but I didn't like the look of all the other program starters. ____________________ FontMachine Too bad that there no longer is a demo version at mBrain, maybe there's still a copy on some age old private site. I had once loaded it and tried it out but unfortunately didn't observe the necessary precautions i.e. installing all extra fonts on D and copy the original font file from Z to C. So I made a mess of my psion, had to perform a hard reset and abandoned experimenting with fonts for a good while. There are some other font loaders available - with less features though. I came across the one from Zavorine (the guy from eplaym) and another one at the eBook program site. ______________________________________________________________________________ Den Komfort von WEB.DE FreeMail nutzen, aber die alten E-Mail-Adressen nicht aufgeben? Squabbles tend not to be made, they develop out of a discussion. << If you are not the intended recipient of the message... >> Now that we're at little annoyances, this is one on mine - all kind of corporate legal disclaimers and full company contact details being tagged on to messages that aren't, in any way, business related. It leads to such silly things as the disclaimer saying that the message shouldn't be disclosed to other persons while it's being posted on a public forum. It also adds to the cost of retrieving the digest. -- Kind Regards, Rolf Brunsting - On holidays in the UK Message written at the Newton House Hotel - Glencarse - Perthshire *++++++++++& Date: 19/09/2002 8:40:53 am From: "dnl" Subject: Problem with PsiWin and Schedule+ 7.x Hi all I run into a problem of synchronization. I have installed PsiWin 2.3.3 on a W2000 machine. I connected a Psion 5mx using the serial port (and I am able to perform backups already). However I am trying to synchronize with Scheduel+ 7.5. Theoretically PsiWin should be able to do it (as I have the option on the Schedule menu) but when I launch the Scheduling process, I get the following error "Synchronizer was unable to load Schedule+ 7.x". I suspect that this may be related to the fact the Schedule+ was never "properly installed" in my machine. We just get a folder with all the files and click directly on the file "SCHDPL32" located in the "C:\Program Files\Schedule+" folder. Probably there is something missing in the Registre or something like that that avoids the Psion Synchronizer to "find" Schedule+ data. Has anybody run into this problem in the past? Is anybody using these settings and could check what info is in the Register? thanks in advance! For David: The reasons I have/had so many psions was my family. Providing 4 people with Psions was an interesting exercise. The actual used count was 5, with the potential for 1 more. Everyone had at least 1, I had a 5MX and a Revo, and my oldest daughter thought a 5mx was too large and was in the process of switching to a Revo when she gave up & went back to a Palm as the ideal size. Now add in the sell-off of Revos or Masharply decreasing prices, and my belief in having a backup, and a person can sort of rationalize their way to more than one each. What really happened was that some of my fellow engineers acquired Makos from me and not incidentally think that they are really neat. and no, I don't use a hard case on the Psion 5MX. The problem is that I often thumb-type while standing. Due to the sliding keyboard, the 5MX can flip out of the hand - a problem that I have never had with units that have a fixed/firm keyboard. The reason that I have so many different OSs is that besides my personal interest, as a sidelight (!) at work, I support any handheld that walks thru the door at my company, with obvious limitations and so I feel a good rationalization to try and HHC operating system. ;o For Rolf, about system. In one of my other lives, I worked in radio - General Class Radio Telephone license - and was interested to see how the packet radio on the Palm VIIx works - rather well I might add. I do observe that the speed of transmission varies noticeably with signal strength. I also find that the Palm VIIx radio is more sensitive and less quirky wrt spatial orientation with it's obvious flip-up antenna than the i705 with it's built-in antenna. You can "load" an antenna to the correct wavelength even with physically small antennas, but an overriding factor in good reception is still the physical length, given the correct wavelength tuning. This is also observed when listening to comments on cell phone reception. Radios/Cell phones with very short antennas generally don't fair as well as those units with longer antennas. I agree that it would be interesting if Palm came out with a GSM version of the Palm.net, but as long as GSM market in the US is so fragmented with consequently such limited coverage, ancillary devices using GSM aren't likely to pass marketing muster. Simply put, Palm, Inc. was defined by the US market. My oldest daughter had a cheap (!) GSM cell phone when she lived in Graz Austria attending college there and frankly detested the unit. Here in the US I find that GSM seems to have better voice quality than CDMA, but CDMA has coverage where GSM signals are down in the "grass" (spectrum noise). I do agree that for some reason text messaging (SMS) with cell phones hasn't caught on in the US whereas outside the US, SMS messages are more common than cell phone voice transmissions. Although I commonly send SMS messages to my daughters, most of my fellow engineers are barely aware of text messaging on cell phones. On the other hand, the US has all of the "Instant Messengers" that, not incidentally, require a constant connection the the Internet - something that is too expensive in Europe. As a corollary, I find Europeans to be less focused on email than Americans. Rolf, Sorry for this late note to you in response to your posting above. Did not open my Epoc Digest mail for a few days. Thanks a lot for the extensive content of your posting on the strings for the Nokia 8310 on HSCSD. I will try the various options you sent and I am sure I will be happy with one of them.
