Subject: Psion repair; Lineone
Dear All,
You may recall me mentioning a problem I have had with the ribbon on my psion 5mx. Basically i think i need a new one and am in need of some help in deciding who and where to send it for repair. I'm not too keen to spend the £70 psion charges (if they still do).
Secondly, I have a friend who has for a while been trying to join this digest but has not been able to. Who do I contact? Is this addr
Lastly, I have for a long time been using my psion with a lineone connection to access my email (PO3). However, recently my psion has for no apparent reason decided not to connect. I use the same connection on my pc and this seems to work fine. Has lineone recently changed something? DOes anyone have the correct settings for this?
Thanks in advance for any help.
regards,
Tom
PS. Am also looking for a cheap psion 7 if anyone has one

Subject: 5mx: grabbing screenshots
I have a note from somewhere (can't find the subject in my 5mx Help or the printed manual) saying that you can capture the screen image by pressing Shift+Control+Fn+S - if you can find enough fingers. You merge the resulting file into Sketch (with EPOC Picture as the filetype).
I'm sure I've done this in the past, but I can't make it work now. At least, I can't detect any new file being created by these keypresses.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Best,
Chris

Subject: HP Jornada
Dear All,
I have been away for 2 weeks and have only just read the back digests. By some coincidence I have just purchased a 2nd user Jornada 680 for £135, and for my use- PIM, contacts and basic word processing it far exceeds what I have come to expect of the Psion range. I have been with Psion since the 3, 3c, 5ive and now Mako. I was so taken with the 680 I have ordered a brand new end of range 710 for £250.
The colour is so vibrant and the battery does last a full 7 hours. I have found that on softer surfaces the machine does rock and yes it is bigger and heavier, but I have weighed that off against a supplied (and secure) docking cradle and perfect synchronisation with XP that gives me the choice whether to change entries on the 680 or on XP- PsiWin has never done this for me.
I have used the 680 for 2 weeks and for my (limited) use i.e. one app open at a time, limited word processing and PIM use I find it is more useful for me than Psions, yet comparable i.e. instant on, good battery life etc. To this end I have a range of Psions machines I am selling.
A classic 5ive, peeling paint but okay screen cable and two Makos just over a year old. One is fine and the other did have battery problems but I think it is now cured. Both are in very good condition, the first having been used as a back up machine. I will take offers as a lot or separates.
Now that I am in effect "deserting" may I be really cheeky and ask if anyone can point me to any good newsgroups/links for the Jornada?
I will continue to read the Digest will interest. Best wishes to all of you and hope that you all enjoy many years of Psioneering to come.

Subject: IBM Microdrives: older verses newer
I've just taken the plunge and got a nice BIG 1Gb IBM Microdrive for my S7. I had been using one of the first 340Mb ones since I first got my S7 (now rather full!) but I have heard that IBM have improved the performance of their minature hard drives since those early ones. The old one I have has since been discontinued. Anyway, I can vouch for the fact that this new one, despite having three times the capacity, is actually faster in operation and considerably quieter too. IBM claims it uses less power from the host machine than the older version but I've only started using it today so I can't verify that yet. However, I do keep very accurate records of my S7's battery performance so I should be able to make a direct comparison within a week or so if anyone is interested. This is from IBM's Microdrive site:
<Technical advances over the first-generation Microdrive:
Sustained data rate is improved, so the drive draws less power from the host device, thus extending battery life.
Improved non-operating shock rating by 50 percent (from 1,000 G to 1,500 G). This is a measure of how rugged the drive is when turned off or not in use >

Subject: Mission Impossible ?????????
Hi Everyone,
Your ( non-Epoc I'm afraid!) mission should you choose to accept it is to find some software to do this...........
I want to rotate the screen image on my laptop and still run all my normal software.
Why?? I'd like to mount my laptop upside down on the deckhead ( ceiling to any landlubbers out there) of my other halfs new yacht ( not as grand as it sounds its 25 foot long and nearly 14 years old!).This will keep drips off it, save space, and reduce reflected glare.
Why am I asking this here?? The idea was inspired by the requests for screen rotation software for Psions a few Digests ago - that, and I don't know of a resource like this Digest for Windows !!!!!!!!!
Rest assured this message will NOT self-destruct.
All the best,
John

THANK YOU for that statement! I have a 128Mo Sandisk and a
5mx too and I too experience these delays, or even longer ones. I
started to think that something was wrong. But it seems that
Sandisks are slow. I should really format it with EDU, I think.
Re: Fontmachine
I use it to read the formulas in some PDF files which use Greek
symbols. I load the Symbol font and Fontmachine and then I can
read them. I _think_ it is Fontmachine which does that, but I am
not quite sure.

I know I can do an export to text in Word and then copy and paste, but a real 'copy pure text' feature could be useful - maybe.
I do it every day. At home I connect using my S7 for e-mails. Digests from a number of lists are then copied with Crtl+C to a new 'Word' file for each digest.
These are then sent by Ir to my Revo+ for editing (to keep notes in Jotter files) and to type my replies into separate 'Word' files, while at work etc.
While away from home I generally use my 5mx as it's smaller than the S7.
I use the Revo+ as it reduces the wear on the 5mx screen printed wiring cable, it's a bit smaller and probably more robust. It also balances well in both hands, just like the 3a/3mx, which excellent feature got lost when the S5 was designed.
Ir is then used in the reverse direction so that I can send my replies.
I have none of the problems that started this thread. I also use Ctrl + Shift + C to use ß = German double SS, ½ = half and the € = Euro from Fn + E. These are all in the upper half of the character set. These are all displayed by a German version of M$ IE5 OK.

That's interesting Itamar as normally using a mobile phone abroad incurs two charges. One for the home provider and the other for the away provider. Please let the digest know, when your bill arrives.

One of the main reasons I love this application is just the sheer
geekiness of it, more seriously though it overcomes one of the real
limitations of the EPOC machines. I can create documents using the
same fonts I would use at the desktop, just pull them over and not have
to mess around quite so much.
On a related topic, has anyone used a non-proportional font that works
well on a Psion? Recommendations please. I loathe courier for plain
text file but feel that only non-proportional fonts can be used in
plain text. All the usual ones that work for me on BeOS and Windows
seem to look grotty on a Psion screen.

Subject: NETPAD WINCE / H/PC FAMILY / DELETING BACKUP FOLDER
Hi Guys,
For Caspar Lam re the netpad WINCE platform:
They're not replacing ER 5 on the netpad Caspar - WINCE is being offered as an option. There's been mention of this being available for the netBook too. Last time I checked Psion Teklogix's website this option was not on the netBook pages, but it would make equal commercial sense.
For Rolf re the H/PC family:
For the record Rolf, the machines I was referring to are all H/PC or H/PC Pro. If you add machines running generic or embedded CE v 2 or v 3 then the list gets really long. The following is not exhaustive but will give you an idea of the type of machines which may be revised if MS decides to carry the H/PC platform forward to CE.net (v 4):
HP Jornada 7xx - H/PC 2000 - already mentioned.
NEC MobilePro 790 - H/PC 2000 - already mentioned.
NEC MobilePro 880 - H/PC Pro - this was still available in May - not sure if it's still in production.
Fujitsu PenCentra 200 - H/PC 2000.
Hitachi ePlate 600-ETM - H/PC Pro.
Intermec 6651 - H/PC 2000.
Itronix fex21 - H/PC 2000
Brainium DreamMax - H/PC Pro.
Six of these machines are keyboard/pen devices.
For Terry Gordon re deleting Backup folder:
Your problem is probably caused by files in your folder and sub-folders that have the Read Only attribute selected. You cannot delete those files or the folders that contain them until you deselect the attribute.
Apologies for the long posting.

If only I could afford the car stand for the S7 which is available from POD Ltd. in the UK (www.poduk.com) for around 200 pounds ... Has aynoe got a diggerent solution for using a S7 in the car ?
Re. Merlin - Did any users of this program notice how it takes hold of memory and does not release it again ? Tonight suddenly I only had 1.7 Mb left. I closed Merlin ad it was 3.5 again, after opening it again it went down to 2.7 Mb. It had swallowed 1 Mb without releasing it. Any ideas why this happens ? Anyone from Neuon around ?

Subject: Missing Jotter
HELP! While I was on a recent vacation I sent my 5mx in for service and took my Series 5 with me, moving my flash disk out of the 5mx into the older machine. While I was away I took a lot of notes in Jotter. I didn't turn on the Series 5 for about a week after I got back home and discovered it needed a backup battery which I then replaced. After installing the new battery, however, Jotter had disappeared along with its data! I tried a soft reset but it didn't help. My Series 5 doesn't seem to have a "Find" feature like my 5mx so I can't search for my missing file that way. Should I try to restore the backup I made before I went on vacation to the Series 5 hoping that both my Jotter and the data will become visible once again? Does anyone have another idea? I know the program and data were visible on the plane when I was coming home a week ago.

Dear Jason,
<< Judging by your choice of holiday destination, I would've thought you enjoyed a bit of cliff-hanging <BG> >>
Cliff-hanging isn't one of my interests. Though I did scale Scafell Pike, Helvellin and the Old Man of Coniston as a fell walker twenty years ago. I'm interested in early British history and my trip has been planned on the basis of it. I simply had to visit the grave of the Venerable Bede (the father of British historical writing) at Durham Cathedral and the remains of St. Paul's Monastery at Jarrow where Bede lived from age 7 to his death (age 63). I've also driven along the old Roman Stane Gate road, visiting the remains of the fortifications and garrison towns along Hadrian's wall.
<< Speed: 9600 >>
Better increase this to 19,200 bps as infrared transmission takes an overhead. You're currently forcing a 9600 bps GSM data speed through a 9600 minus overhead infrared 'pipe' between phone and Psion.
<< Fax: ATS0=2 >>
This is normally not needed. Instruct the Email application to "Wait for fax call" and it sends the necessary ATS0 command to the phone/modem.
<< Flow control: none >>
And this is the strange one - no flow control. Could you satisfy my curiosity by checking with Comms what your T39's reaction is to the AT&K3 command? When the T39 answers with OK it's best to change the following settings:
- Init: ATZ&K3
- Flow control: Hardware (RTS/CTS)

Dear Jason,
<< I must take exception with your comments here - there are plenty of Psion5's in use beyond 3 years. In fact there are people still using Series3's and older devices >>
Which doesn't change the fact that their economical life is between two and three years. In other words, the purchase price has been written off and the value in the accounts is zero after three years. Though this is a corporate accounting practice it's also true for private ownership. The people who still own an original Series 5 will think twice about having it repaired when it fails. The cost of repair is more than it's economical value. I'm afraid the overall majority will decide to replace the 5 by a new PDA which allows them to do things they can't do with a 5.
There you have the conflict between the legal requirement Edgar refers to and practical (economical) reality. Having to offer a full repair service and spare parts supply for a period that's three times the economical life of a PDA, or other computer, doesn't make sense. You have spares on stock that only gather dust. You need to keep the knowledge of service engineers refreshed so that they can do repairs they won't perform anymore. Etc, etc.

Hi,

I find it makes a big difference, showing System puts up the presentation of an Open... dialog from less than a second to 4 or 5 seconds (note that most built-in programs ignore the system area anyway so it won't make any difference there). In my case this is probably because the non-system stuff has a simple structure, while System contains a lot of Street files, many small files in a fairly deep tree. It's definitely worth trying for a lot of people, you'll be surprised at how rarely you need to go into System areas in day-to-day use.

Hello.
The screen cable Looks like the most common source of repairings, I have a 5mx, and I am worried about it. I read in Epoc Digest#79 from Mick Kilbride that his S5mx last 19 months without cable screen problems. But only one data is not enought either only data from the S5mx with this problem. I mean that perhaps nobody more had problems and we(I) need the data about people without this problem too.
Well, you could send your data.
in example, my data:
Alberto s5mx; working 14 months around 10 times per day opened, without problem.
Greetings

<I agree that PDFPrinter is extremely useful, and that it can be a great alternative to nConvert *at times* - but nConvert still offers a great deal of useful functionality that PDFPrinter never will.>
Yes, I found this out when a colleage asked me for a spreadsheet. I fired up my rather underused copy of nConvert, converted the EPOC file to MS Excel and emailed it to him. When viewed on his PC he thought I had just bought a big Windoze beige desktop space hogger (because of the beautifully converted cell formatting of course!) and was quite surprised to hear I had sent it as a converted EPOC Sheet file from my wonderful S7 :-) IMHO, nConvert is THE killer app for EPOC as it offers file sharing with the BIG Microsoft corporation. There is nothing wrong with any computer having a stand alone O/S but it MUST be able to share/convert files with Microsoft apps in this connected world we live in. Psion should have built it into the ROM as a standard app, I'm sure you would agree!

Subject: S5 - any other way to access "Spell"?
Hi there,
My dad has been using my old Series 5 to help solve crossword puzzles with "Speill", but I assume the screen cable must have gone as no amount of touching the screen gets "Spell" (or anything else!) to start (a soft reset had no effect at all).
Does anyone know if there's another way to start "Spell" using the keyboard or keystrokes, or is a trip to POS on the cards (any idea of the possible cost)?
All the best,
Kate!!

That's what I thought based on experience, but not fact.
> What I'd really like to know (but probably can't find out) is, would it take longer with the same files on a bigger CF (& by how much) & how much quicker would an 'Ultra' CF of the same capacity be & whether (& how much) the delay is dependant on fragmentation, cluster size, make of CF, etc, etc.
Larger cluster sizes would in theory increase the time taken, but I understand the new 'Ultra' technology significantly reduces the time.
My first CF on an S5 was 16Mb. I've bought a doubling each time up to 128Mb. The last one performed better than I expected. I use DiskBench.opo which displays the read & write speed of drives. Can't give it's URL, as I'm not at home now. There's also a web site with tables of CF speeds.

I agree with you Caspar, but the real world is about making money. Remember the Beta/VHS war. The inferior product made a lot of money for JVC.
As Psion's netBook has a loadable OS, can we hope for the ability to run EPOC or Windows on the same machine (after a re-load, just swap CF cards).
A direct comparison of speed and disk space requirements between the two OSs would be very interesting.
Another advantage would be that we should then be able to run those good old DOS programs on a Psion. But don't hold your breath too long......

Re. GPRS - I don't understand why you would like to use GPRS from a landline. Surely there are cheaper and faster options available than GPRS ? A Euro is today 1.578 against the pound, 0.983 against the dollar (ie somewhat less than 1 dollar).
Answer to: Peter Keene
Re. Netpad & WinCE - You are right if you take for granted that Symbian will continue to develop their palmtop OS. However, if netPad / netBook machines will be sold mainly with WinCE OS, they might well decide to stop the development of this OS and concentrate solely on the mobile phone OS's.
Answer to: Mark Bridge
Re. GPRS charges - Unfortunately you are right, although customer service mentioned to me Gbp 9.68 / Mb while their website says for most countries in Western Europe Gbp 8.75 / Mb but for Switserland which is Gbp 17.30 (!). I feel somewhat cheated as when I subscribed they did not tell me the Gbp 2.35 in Europe was a promotional rate. I think it is still cheaper than using GSM, but not comparing it to a landline even in a hotel room using a 56k modem like the Psion IR Travelmodem. Can someone tell me about how much longer GSM takes in comparison with GPRS ? For example following GPRS examples :
792,183 bytes, 6.02 minutes : 11 incoming emails
409,480 bytes, 7.12 minutes : 16 incoming emails
893,174 bytes, 8.35 minutes : 19 incoming emails
251,228 bytes, 3.13 minutes : 3 incoming, 7 outgoing emails
My incoming emails are quite large as from work faxes come in via Outlook as well and sent on to me in an email. I open the fax with MBMView. Oh, and I use(d) it only for emails, no wap and no surfing.

Re. Mailbox settings - Try to delete the problematic mailbox settings, perform a soft reset and enter them again as a new setting. It helped me when I had the same problem.
Re. Crontab - You are not missing anything, there are only 8 slots.
Answer to: Rolf Brunsting
Re. Disclaimers - I tend to agree with you. Sometimes the operators in the team do remove these disclaimers, but it has to be done by hand and there is not always time to do so.

On another reflector, I've had a chain of exchanges on this topic - I'm on your side.
Their opinion was that the members should be grateful for others using their work time to post responses for the benefit of others. Unnecessary bloat (disclaimers, full quotes etc) due to laziness on the part of the poster are now a fact of life. But why should 600+ have to use the delete key when only one person needs to.
Also why do folk quote HTML code as plain text, such as:-

I sometimes even get it as junk mail, but until you copy it into Web to read it, you don't know it's junk.
