Hi all Assistant users,

may be somebody don't know the feature "Shortcuts".

I installed it now and I think it's a wonderfull feature for the Assistant. Thank you. Mario.

"Shortcuts.opo" creates (like Macro5) 3 screens each with 28 icons for programs, folders, documents and so on. It very reduces the handling time, if you work with S5mx or higher. At the S5C the macro works too slow.

Subject: Re: Other OSs

Pete,

Can confirm that someone somewhere is currently developing a ROM based OS for RISC OS in NetBook. I'm currently waiting and wish they'd hurry up about it.

Go to http://www.riscos.co.uk/ and type in 'Netbook' in the search window, it gives a list of RISC OS > NetBook developments. The project travels under the name of 'Ron'.

Last I heard a couple of months ago it is still being developed. But as with many things RISCy, the timings are always open ended. Which I have got used to, as it generally means that any new software and hardware is well tested and bug free. Quality counts. Even our OS world has new harware rolling out now, new desktops and (hopefully) a long awaited for sub-notebook. Yippee!

FYI, I only use the RISC OS desktop for my CAD and other workaday tasks, my P5mx is my buddy. And the two get on well. Though the two OSs were never happier when I was using the Psion 3c as its legacy was from

the Acornbook which was a joint Acorn/Psion product. Funny really, as when you use a non-mainstream OS in both desktop and handheld, you assemble a greater range of cross-platform tricks and programs that essentially allow greater transparency and less reliance on one OS. I admit to being a great disliker of the MS behemoth, and a believer in variety and the dynamic it evolves. Hence my slightly perverse attachment to Psion & RISC OS.

Hope I've shed some light on your search.

regards

Peter

You need to change the default Init. string in your modem (mobile phone) settings to either

AT&F&K5

or

AT&F&K4&Q6

I have exactly the same combination (Psion5mxPro and Timeport L7089) and it definitely works with that.

How very complicated and space consuming (there are lots of apps which need well over 36k), especially when some kind and talented people have already provided us with lots of freeware programs which easily create links that take up only 1k. Apart from Nomore and FileLink which don't create the linked app's but their own icon we have MakeLink and AppLink which are exclusively written to create shortcuts to programs and create them with the app's icon.

MakeLink is an app that runs from the xbar and can link all programs (but doesn't list them in the selection box alphabetically)

AppLink is opo has an alphabetical list but doesn't link programs which create files (like sheet).

Subject: NEW GENERATION NETBOOK

Hi Guys,

For Edgar and others re a new generation netBook:

Thanks for your comments. I'm familiar with most of the third party apps that have been mentioned and in fact use some of them. However, my point is that I want this functionality, the "must haves" in my posting, to be native to the bundled app suite.

To use nConvert as an example, it's a brilliant app but unfortunately it doesn't cut it when it comes to converting Word documents in a business environment - it can't correctly convert tabs or some of the formatting options like bullets or underlining. It also can't convert tabular footers. A lot of the consultancy work that I do is in collaboration with a colleague who only uses Windows machines. We write long, technical reports together and exchange each updated version by e-mail. Because of nConvert's shortcomings in converting Word to RTF and vice-versa, one of us has to spend time reformatting the document each version. The fact that we've now got it down to a fine art is beside the point - the netBook, as a machine aimed at the corporate market, should provide this functionality.

To take printing as another example. Why should I, having bought a machine that is supposed to set me free from a PC, have to buy a third party app to provide one of the most basic of requirements, that is, the ability to print my documents as written - colour, graphics and all?

As a final example let's take backups. Incremental backup was native to SIBO, why is it missing from ER5?

Apologies if I haven't yet responded to something that I should have, but #83 took a look at my Inbox and decided not to come in. I hope to get hold of it soon via the kind offices of Tim Johnson.

Peter

Will,

When I last looked into this purple said that if I sent them the

registered disk they would send me a replacement with the colour

version.  This was I while ago and I never got round to it because I

went all minimalist on my netBook for a while.  It might be worth

sending an email to see if they are willing to make the offer.

With regard to running Risc OS on the netBook I believe that the

project has been put on hold again.  I grabbed this from following a

link in one of the acorn newsgroups:

"In the interview on My RISC OS (as published in the Foundation

newsletter

as well) Paul Middleton states: "At present I would have to say

that it is

unlikely that a full version of RISC OS will become available for

the

current Psion netBook. That is not to say that future Psion

products could

not be supported."

This was mid-September so things may have moved on.  You can always

check out the cmp.sys.acorn.* newsgroups for more information but don't

evern repeat my error and top-post there!

Subject: Re: IR problem / alternative email client (4 Ivan)

Hello Ivan,

the problem you describe (reset of your 5mx when trying to dial-up your ISP; sorry for not quoting the original mail, the ebook reader I use to read the digest doesn't seem to support copying text to the clipboard.)

Do you have a long init string for your mobile phone in the Psion modem control panel? If yes, you could be running into the same bug as me some time ago on my 5mxPRO. In the control panel I had entered very long (don't remember exactly, but it must have been more than 20, probably even 25 characters) modem init strings. When the Psion is actually trying to dial out using these strings, there seems to be a buffer overflow or something if the init string is too long, and ugly things can (and will) happen, from crashing the connection server (so that you will have to do a soft reset in order to restart it) to resetting the machine on its own. I haven't had the patience to try how long the strings can safely be, but I think that up to 15 characters should work OK. (My current working init string is 13 characters.)

Re your question about other email clients, I have recently stumbled across (wasn't it even here on the digest that I read about it?) xjmail. This is a very functional client with less "eye candy" than the Psion email application, but it has very useful features, like batch downloading of mails, automatic immediate disconnect once all mail is downloaded, the option of rejecting mails larger than a configurable size, and the option of downloading only the first n lines of long mails. All in all very useful features especially when used in a mobile context. Unfortunately I haven't kept the download URL in my Psion. In the help file (which is written in Japanese, which I can't read) I found this URL: http://www.hi-ho.ne.jp/ktkawabe/XJMail/ (but in any case you should be able to find it using any good search engine)

Best regards

Stephan

Doesn't matter when version 2 of Crap smells like crap and version 3 of Crap like roses - you're still dealing with Crap <BG>.

<< ...why live in the past? >>

Knowing CE's past means knowing where the current version is coming from and what has changed during the years. Windows CE is a desktop operating system and application set that has been squeezed into a small sized device. Leaving the task of solving CE's inherent performance and memory problems to the component manufacturers and hardware system designers. Isn't it silly for a 640 by 240 colour device with a 206 MHz Intel StrongARM processor like the Jornada 720 still to need hardware graphics acceleration in order to get a decent screen refresh performance?

<< Just because WINCE was 'crap' doesn't mean it is 'crap' and always will be 'crap' - no? >>

I very much prefer not to spend money on three devices before spending money on a fourth that's finally at a level where the first should have been. I also prefer not to have my choices regarding desktop/laptop software being dictated by the handheld computer as Microsoft's doing more and more. Then there's the question of trust in Microsoft and the integrity of the people who are running the company.

It's worse than that as the people who upgrade to a new Microsoft Office version expect the whole world to do the same at exactly the same point in time. To the effect that you receive Word files by e-mail your own version of Word can't read, ditto for Excel, Access ... etc.

<< MS's dominance stretches far beyond the corporate world, I'm afraid >>

The company I work for still uses Microsoft Office '97 (on Windows NT4 machines) for the simple reason that it already has more functionality than we need. And the only reason for changing from WordPerfect to MS-Word was that we became part of a much larger company that was using MS-Word already.

Dear Kevin,

<< I couldn't agree with you more on your wish list for a new generation netBook, particularly the bit about Bluetooth support and ER5 upgrading, NOT ER7 which I suspect will be similar to my ER6 Communicator i.e. "dumbed down" >>

I don't think it's Symbian OS 6 and 7 that have been dumbed down compared to version 5. It's simply that we're no longer dealing with a single OS version that defines the functionality of all the devices from a single manufacturer. Symbian OS has become a construction kit similar to Meccano or Lego. The Symbian partners and licensees pick those components suitable for the device they're creating. And they can take the component code and make modifications to suit their requirements.

What we're seeing in the Symbian OS 6 and 7 devices are the differences in ideas and opinions between the partners and licensees. They may agree on a core of (say) 75% and differ (strongly) on the remaining 25%. Which is similar to the difference in opinion between Psion owners. There would have been no Jotter when I'd have had the final say on the functionality set for Symbian OS 5, for example. I'd have spent the development resources that went on Jotter on other items.

As for the 9210, Nokia created a user base with its 9000(i) and 9110 models. The 9000 was supposed to be Nokia's technology leader. To demonstrate what Nokia was capable of and to show what kind of device we'd all be using in future. Nokia didn't expect to make any money with the 9000 but sold well over 1 million units and made a handsome profit. The Communicator proved to be a viable product right from the start. What Nokia's existing user community would like to see in the new 9210 will thus have been very important to the company. After all, it's these people that went for the Communicator format - not the people who bought a Psion. It's nice, of course, when the 9210 persuades a number of (long term) Psion users to ditch their Psions and buy a 9210. But that won't have been the main aim as it's not for Nokia to cater to Psion's user base - that's Psion's job.

Dear Maria,

<< Any thoughts? >>

Well ... I'm wondering how well Alphasmart's statement that the "Dana will run over 10,000 existing applications" will work out in practice. Quite a number of PalmOS applications won't have been written with the keyboard and display of the Dana in mind. And I don't think Alphasmart will have tested them all to see where compatibility problems crop up.

One of the things I can imagine is that a range of PalmOS applications will present people with an awkward mix of things you can do with a keyboard and have to do with the pen. Something that's different from a Psion Series 5 that was designed from the start for dual pen/keyboard operation.

Many an application won't automatically adapt itself to the wider screen of the Dana as they've been written for the 160 by 160 pixel screen of the Palm models. With the result that they'll only take a 160 by 160 pixel 'window', leaving the rest of the screen blank.

Question then is - how many developers will adapt their applications in such a way that they take full advantage of the Dana's features. When Alphasmart, indeed, sells the Dana to the educational market only there's a good chance that the number of software well adapted to the Dana will be educational titles. Whether business orientated software will be changed to suit the Dana then depends on how many Danas escape the 'school run'.

Dear Idris,

<< I discovered that MessageSuit is unable to send faxes using IR connection.... >>

That's certainly not the case. I've used a Series 5 and Message Suite 1.52 in combination with a range of mobile phones to send out fax messages. Including the Nokia 7110 you're using.

First thing to do is to create the right modem definition for the 7110.

Modem tab:

- Name : Nokia 7110

- Speed : 57600 bps

- Connect via : Infrared

- Fax class : Auto

Initialisation tab:

- Init. (reset) string : AT&F&K4

- Data init. string : Leave empty

- Fax init. string : Leave empty

Advanced tab:

- Flow Control : Software (Xon/Xoff)

- Terminal detect (DSR/DTR) : Unchecked

- Carrier detect (DCD) : Unchecked

Second thing is that the error message you report when attempting to contact you mailbox can be caused by (one or more) incorrect account settings in the Email application. I think it's best that you check these with Tiscali technical support.

Dear Guillaume,

The answer to your question is a combined Yes/No. What the Germans would call a "Jain".

That operating system and standard Psion applications of your French Series 5mx are fixed in ROM and can't be changed. The Series 5mx Pro doesn't have a ROM, the operating system and standard Psion applications are loaded in a protected RAM area. Thing is that the Series 5mx Pro has only been supplied to German speaking countries (Germany, Austria and Switzerland). The reason why the binary software image that's loaded in protected RAM is only available in the German language. Making an image copy of the French ROM of your Series 5mx won't work as the software is compiled to run in place. That is, to run in ROM space, not RAM space.

There are, however, language patches available for the EPOC Psions. They were created by people who speak Russian, Polish and Czech. Languages Psion (the company) doesn't support. Install such a patch the way you for a third-party application and the menus and key-commands of the operating system and applications are changed to (say) Polish. I understand that there are also patches for languages Psion supports. So that people can change a UK-English Series 5mx into a German one.

These language patches are available on a number of web sites. I'm not able to point you to one of these as I've never needed to change the language of my Psions. It's probably best to do a web search using such keywords as "Psion", "language" and "change".

Dear Itamar,

<< They decided to change the IRComm interface in Win2K and WinXp from the standard IR interface that's been in use for years >>

Jim Cooke's mistaken, I'm afraid. IrCOMM is the IrDA standard that describes the replacement of the RS232C cable (Serial IrCOMM) and Centronics printer cable (Parallel IrCOMM) by infrared data transmission.

Windows '95 didn't have it at first but it was made available as a separate driver at a later date. Windows '98 came with IrCOMM as standard and Windows ME as well. Their beefy professional brothers, Windows NT and 2000, didn't have infrared support. Third-parties supplied IrCOMM drivers for them, either as a separate driver or as part of an application.

Windows XP replaces both Windows ME and Windows 2000 and Microsoft had to make a decision regarding infrared support. The company decided not to implement IrCOMM but to give XP IrOBEX (Infrared Object EXchange) support.

The Gold Card GSM Upgrade for the Nokia 51xx and 61xx models isn't for the Series 7, or any other EPOC based Psion handheld computer, but for the Gold Card itself. Hence no SIS files as these install software on the handheld computer. The later Gold Cards have FLASH ROM that can be used to expand the functionality of the card. The GSM Upgrade adds the firmware functionality for GSM communication to a Gold Card. Psion Dacom (later Psion Connect) only supplied an installation tool for (laptop) PCs. Meaning that you need to find friend or colleague with a laptop to load the GSM support firmware into the card.

<< I have searched the Psion website for hours but can find nothing helpful - all the info about this upgrade seems to have been removed >>

As the Gold Card was a Psion Dacom / Psion Connect product you need to check there. Note that the Gold Card GSM Upgrade for the Nokia 51xx and 61xx models was withdrawn from the market in early 2000.

Re. IR problem - Welcome to the digest. From the digest I know that the Timeport L7089 does work with the 5MX. I suggest you post your modem and email settings on the digest and someone will surely help you. You could also have a look at the website http://www.mikemcc.net/ of Mike McConnell where you will find a lot of details how to connect ( he reads this digest too).

Answer to: Bengt-Arne Wallden

Re. Screen cable - Try www.posltd.com for further details, I am not sure they will sell it to you, but seem to remember having read that in the past they did send it to someone outside the UK.

Answer to: Owen H. Morgan

Re. Saint - Thanks for coming to my defence <G>. While I will take credit for restarting the digest after the up5s digest disappeared, I think that Rolf Vonau is the one who put the most time and effort into this project with the writing of a complete program to smoothly run the digest on an EPOC machine, even more so given the fact that with the 5 of us we use 4 or 5 different machines. And the other members [for the new subscribers Nicole Carbonara,  Michael Degn and Jason Garbutt] have put a lot of time and effort into it too (even more than myself over the last month or so).

Answer to: Kevin Collins

Re. GPRS - While in theory you might be correct, in practice it does not work that way. You could do a test by using all three methods (if you subscribe to all 3) by using "copy" instead of "move". However, it all depends also on how busy the network is, how quick you get connected to your mailbox on a given day, the strength of your signal and a few more variables. I just got my first invoice for GPRS and my calculations in the UK are about right. In comparison to GSM it is certainly cheaper, but certainly more expensive than an oldfashioned landline.

Re. Neuon - I think they might have stopped their activities for EPOC, as their last input was on 13/06/02.

Re. Charges in Europe - Vodaphone charges a flat 75 pence for calls made in Europe, whether these are local calls or calls to the UK. They charge abt. 35 pence for incoming calls. GPRS costs about Gbp 9.60 / Mb opposed to Gbp 2.30 in the UK. The usage of roaming I think is still a complete rip off with a huge profit margin for the providers. I read recently that a European commission is looking into this matter which might eventually bring these prices down.

Re. Duracells - Interestingly enough I did not get any significant different usage from Duracells, Sony, Sanio or other types of alkaline batteries. I think they are all more or less the same. For UK readers, I noticed a package of 100 AA batteries at PC World for about 18 pounds (forgot the make). can't go much wrong with that price !

I suspect that you restored old data, so reverting to my earlier address and possibly caused other problems with other subscribers that had made changes.

No, I did not restore anything.  I just started my shift on Monday morning and the first Digest I sent was the previous one (#85).  I used the subscriber's database that was emailed to me by the previous operator on shift the exact way they were.

You have just sent this:- <<

I checked in the subscriber's database and you are thereexclusively.  I do not understand how the Digest could have gone

I also checked the unsubscriber's database and I found out that your address, on the contrary, had been changed at the end of September.

Which address would you like me to put in the database?

Hi Digestives,

Reference is made to the mail in the EPOC DIGEST V1 # 085 , on 30 Sep 2002 01:10:16, in which Ivan wrote:

Until I upgraded recently to an Ericsson T39m, I used my Motorola Timeport L7089 quiet extensively with my S5 for about 2 years, without a problem.

Message Suite works pretty well, but clearly something is amiss in your setup. I would start by trying to get a web page loaded with Web. Using The Dialer or e-mail brings additional complications into the process, so I would avoid using these until you've established that you can get an internet connection.

To try and pin-down the problem, we need some further info about when this occurs, ie is it before you get the connection dialog, or after you've OK'd it ? If you cancel the connection dialog does Web work OK (for local file browsing).

Also, do you have a landline connection with your Psion, and if so is this working ?

Also, I'd recomment a soft-reset (after closing all open programs & files, hold down Fn+Shift+Ctrl+K), before trying again.

FYFI, here are the settings I used my Timeport:

Motorola Timeport L7089 data settings

Please note that I use two different settings, and therefore have two modems defined - Timeport Digitial and Timeport Non-Digital, I change the modems according to how I am accessing. Mostly I use the digital setting (to access through an Orange number) as it is more reliable and dials much faster, but keep the other for emergencies. Remember to activte the Timeport's infrared port before the Psion.

Speed 38400

Connect via Infrared

Fax class Auto

Loudspeaker Never

Volume Quiet

Pause 4

Init.string AT+CBST=71,0,1 AT&F&K5

Data string ATZ leave blank

Fax string leave blank leave blank

Hope this is of some help, but feel free to ask for more help.

Best Regards.
