Subject: Paragraph in Word
Hi,
I hope you're gonna understand me...
There is something I miss on my Psion: it is the ability to use paragraphs ASCI Code 006 and 'half paragraph' ASCI 007 (Don't know the correct english name, sorry) signs in the Replace field. It could be really useful. I could for exemple, open a file in Opera, select all and then paste it in a word or date file (which is usefuller as an html file) but if I do that, it isn't nicely formatted.
NConvert is useless with html.
Moreover, it would be great to generate Ebook file with the bookmark option when one could replace ^p^p with ^p^p and write at the end < >.
Have anyone of you ever succeeded in that?
Any help greatly appreciated (again :))
Greetings!
Guillaume

Guillaume,
I have had a simular problem, the only sollution was to get another CF card. I have found some are not fully compatable with Psions, I suggest you try a SanDisk or simular well known brand. My problem caused my Psion to Soft reset and wipe the c: Drive at the first switch on of the day! Take it back to where you got it and try another brand. I only had this problem with 256mb, 128 mb in the same brand was OK.

Never touch Mac-specific files which are invisible on the Mac but become visible on the Psion
Always close apps and files which run from the cf
Never copy Psion-system data to or from the Mac (this corrupts the cf and hangs the Mac)
And still, cf-cards occasionally become corrupt. I always keep the complete content of a cf card on the mac. When it happens, I reformat it and recopy the stuff (fi, 64 MB of dictionaries).
It seems it has to do with the way the Mac and the Psion identify the file-structure and -kind, and the way they place and use filenames in the (?)file-headers...
best,
vlad

David,
We do too. And Office 97 does everything we need to do. Only problem is when you get new PC's, you can't buy Office 97 anymore.

Give this a try.

Stephane, I'm no expert, but after much trouble, I finally got an
emulator working on my PC. So that I wouldn't forget how to do it, I
wrote myself a set of instruction - a MS Word document. If you'd
like, I could send it, plus 2 wins opx files which you need, to you.

For Guillaume Favre: Guillaume, you can write as long postings as
you want, in "funny English" (actually pretty good English), as long
as you bring me such good things as CoCoPaPa - now *that* is a funny
name. :-) You're description of how it works was excellent.
Some of the more learned digestees may not want such long
explanations, but they sure work for me! What the hell is a digest
for, if not to give *lucid* explanations. I always remember
mathematics textbooks saying something like, "...and the student can
plainly see...", when skipping a set in moving from one complex
equation to another. And 95% of the class were completely bewildered!
My sig follows. :-)

I have tried this in the past, and the Mac always seemed to mess up the CF
Card. So I used to have two - a small old one that I used for transferring
files backwards and forwards, and another main one for all of my main data.

Hello,
since it is not possible to connect to PsiWin via anything else than the serial interface (COM1-COM4) the only way to back up the Psion via ethernet is using ftp. If you set up a ftp server at your pc you can send the files with nFTP or RMRFtp manually or send them automatically with EpocSync using the ftp feature.

Searching for 'Latitude and longitude of UK towns' at google.com turned up freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~agene/locations/
"UK Towns and Geographical Features. The following table lists over 45,000 towns, villages ... format is Town or feature name, County, Latitude and Longitude ..."

A good reference for latitude and longitude for UK cities appears to be the one at http://wwx.astro.com/cgi-bin/atlw3/aq.cgi?lang=e. The site appears to be a resource for astrologists and it seems to work for even very small towns in the UK.
The thing I found slightly bizarre was that the site was recommended by the Royal Observatory of Edinburgh website as an aid to calculating sunrise and sunset times. I have always thought of astrology and astronomy as being somewhat mutually exclusive.

David,
I just want to emphasise that I was _not_ saying that current HPC or WinCE is crap. I was following up specifically on some points made by Rolf regarding the company rather than the product. It was to some extent going off thread but seemed appropriate to keep the same subject title. Other than that I am more than happy to leave the whole subject of WinCE behind.
Truth be told, I rather admire the way MS have turned around the WinCE line. Earlier incarnations were very poor and the company's insistence on following the Windows 95 / Start Menu paradigm for the GUI was perhaps one of the more glaring problems with the early machines, but that's an aside. Because of the resources available to them, Microsoft are capable of taking the knocks that would be fatal to other (smaller) companies.
If early versions of, say, Palm had come out with the same performance as the early WinCE machines that company would have sunk without trace. Looking at what has changed since those early machines, it is hard to say that the turnaround is due to a whole host of Microsoft innovations. Screens have got better, hardware design is slicker, the desktop metaphor has been abandoned (on the non-clamshell designs) in favour of a more palm-like system. System performance has been boosted by using faster processors and battery life has stayed about the same. As far as I can see, the only USP of PocketPC and HPC machines compared to EPOC and Palm are the multimedia features.

As I've been meandering around te place, I noticed there is
more than one type of Duracel Ultra
There are plain 'Duracell Ultra's, and now also (in the UK at
least) 'Duracell M3 Ultra's - available in Dixons for £15.98 for
24, or £10.89 for 12.
The Duracell Ultras I gotr with my 5mx lasted for
1562mAH / 7days 22 and a half hours / 19H:24 of continuous
operation
I find that Uniross 1700mAH AA rechargables are much
cheaper to use, and last practically as long:
I bought mine from Argos
- a set of 4 AA rechargables (1700mAH) with a 2 hour
recharger was £29.99 (It's also available in Dixon at £34.99)
The recharger also recharges NiCads - in one hour dead, even
800mAH high capacity NiCads.
The recharger also has a car power-socket lead - so you can
re-charge the batteries as you drive
In comparison to the 1562mAH I got from the Duracell Ultra
I'm getting an average of 1364 from the Uniross 1700mAH
NiMh rechargables
I'm fairly sure the mAH figure is on an upward trend for now -
I've only used each pair 5 times, and I've got a larger mAH
figure out of them each time I've used them.
With the amount I use my Psion5mx, I expect I'll 'break even'
for having bought the charger and battery set 40-50 days after
I bought them.
Plus, a confession: I've become so anorak-y over trying to get
long lives from rechargable AA batteries, that I have a
spreadsheet which records the time I swap batteries over, and
the total hh:mm and mAH used; calculates out the various
other stuff, like elapsed days, mAH/£ from a set of batteries,
etc.; and graphs usage, battery-life trends, the usable charge I
get from a given battery set in a particular charger, etc.
If anyone else wants a copy, please contact me on:, pref. with a subject line

Many thanks to Philip S. Adkins Potter for pointing me to the OPL SDK. When I tried it on my PC at home, the first time it took me to the registration/login screen, then the second time it took me to the download page. At 27Mb it took 20 minutes to download via cable modem. Then I tried it at work to get it up & running on my work PC & the site was down all day - strange.
But then along came Marcus von Cube, who very kindly uploaded onto his website, so I got it from there, (very grateful). This took less than 30 seconds with my company's fast internet link!
After a lot of fiddling around, I managed to get it working using my backed up files. Wow, it's a spooky feeling seeing my beloved Psion running on a PC.
Anyway, thanks again, guys,

CoCoPaPa: I was really glad when I eventually discovered this macro a while ago. Before that I had tried my luck with Lister and another copy/ paste macro (forgot the name) which needed a menue to perform the functions and restricted the length of the text to 255 letters - simply not good enough. This one is really a must.
Translauncher is also nice, I can now tap on an e-mail or web adress and the corresponding app is lauched and the adress pasted in.

As for Bluetooth... Someone on the digest has already stated that the problem with bluetooth on a psion is not so much the cf-slot (there are a few cards which have the exact size of a cf-card) but the missing software/driver.
Maybe someone with time on his hand (and skill) will tackle it for us...

Hi all!
From my postings on the Digest, you may have noticed that I am a devoted user of Mario Collado's fin sw Assistant. This sw has a function that gives you a quasi-hyperlink function. If you mark an e-mailaddress in a text somewhere and hit a shortcut key, a new e-mail with that address pasted is opened etc. etc.
There is a similar function for URLs, mark it, hit a shortcut key, and Web opens the respective URL / file. But here's my catch: the MC218 I switched to from an older 5mx is not exactly the same as the 5mx, one point where they differ is Web. The app in the MC218 is not exactly Web but an Ericsson adapted browser that is named Internet on the silk screen and obviously has another app name / path in the Z drive.
I would really like to be able to use the "hyper-link" function for URLs in Assistant. Does anybody have a suggestion how to make this possible? A file that simulates the Web app file from 5mx but points to the correct app file in the MC218 (which is called web.app) or...?

I have used this one successfully. There are a number of ways to enter the street for which you wish to find the co-ordinates. e.g Post code, street name. Once the map is returned with the result of your search, click on the point on the map for which you ant the reference, hit the radio button for OS Grid below and the site will then return the grid reference in the search window.

Hi Guys,
For Kevin re long and lat website:
I don't know of a specific website Kevin but I do have a couple of excellent atlases which give the lats and longs of over 200 000 places. If you are stuck, send me your list off-digest and I'll look them up for you (I'm an atlas junkie).
For Itamar re S7 printing colour:
It would be amazing if your S7 printed colour directly to the printer (without Andrew's drivers) but I suspect that you printed through the PC, in which case it's normal (except for graphics). If you did print directly to the printer, then I suspect that we're going to ask you to start investigating your ROM so that we may learn more!
For all re the virus:
From the postings made so far it seems that most of the active members received the infected bogus digest. If this is also the case with the lurkers then we may have a compromise subscriber database.

For years I have used my 5mx to go on-line when away from home in England. I link an external PC modem [which I happend to have lying around!] to the Psion via a null-modem adaptor. The other socket on the modem with its little square plug goes to a British Telecom plug and into the BT wall socket. Bingo - no problems!
When I visited France last [we have recently bought a house there], I tried to plug the same set-up into our France Télécom T-shaped socket, replacing the cable from the modem to the wall socket with the appropriate cable, bought in a local electrical store. Sadly it didn't work!
I tried to buy a cheap external modem in France to replace my English one, on the principle that it would come with the appropriate wiring and plug - but they are all USB nowadays, and don't connect to a Psion.
What's my next step?

cares.
And just because users care, doesn't mean that
manufacturers listen. Otherwise we'd have laptpos that had
longer battery lives, instead of just faster processors, more

I've just been investigating this very thing, and I'm happy to
document my experiences into a 'how to' guide.
I'll do it over the next couple of days, and post a link to it on
my Epoc/SymbianOS software page at
http://html.dnsalias.net/gawnsoft/index.html
I'll document it as a Wiki page, so anyone can come and add
to it.
Cheers,
Eua

>>Believing that one's chosen OS or platform is the best for one's own needs or even the best overall is fine, but to allow this belief to completely blind oneself to the merits of another platform comes across as some minor form of snobbery and honestly as being somewhat childish. I would not speak so plainly if I weren't speaking to a Drent ;>) <<
David , you hit the nail squarely on its head , from 2.11 on I consider WindowsCE an operating environment that fulfills my needs , even three years after purchase of my 680
Properly configured it can be surprisingly stable ( only one spontaneous hard reset in all these years , despite quite intensive use as a handheld Net terminal )
Now that I have used WindowsCE and EPOC 32 R4 side by side for several monts now , I see no major difference between the two environments in terms of stability and usability
>>So? Knowing where CE is coming from and what has changed over the years can tell me how CE has improved and how it hasn't and it may even tell me how it might improve in the future, but knowing "where the current version is coming from" and "what has changed during the years" cannot make the current rev of the product *crap*! <<
From 2.11 on WindowsCE is fit for general , corporate consumption , with the ability to build devices that can be used completely standalone or in combination of desktops without Activesync installed
HP has now a completely mature product with its 680/690/7** range , even to the extent that they will carry on with this product and even plan to make it compatible with the iPaq in the next iteration
>>Myself, I never seriously considered buying a WINCE machine years ago because I thought that the OS simply wasn't good enough, same with the hardware, but that doesn't blind me to the merits of *today's* WINCE handhelds, especially HP's fine Jornada 700 line.<<
The HP7** LX is currently the best small clamshell available , bar none , even if the price of the last iteration ( 728 w. 64 megs of RAM ) is somewhat steep at EUR 999 ( yes , you CAN use a microdrive in the bottom CF slot )
>>This is incorrect. WINCE was a new build for smaller format solid-state devices. That it looks and behaves like big Windows is, of course, intentional - but it is certainly not a desktop OS.<<
It is free from the cruft that desktop Windows ( 4.** aka 95/98/SE/ME and NT , including 5.0sp3 and 5.1sp1 ) has to carry for the sake of backwards compatibility
This also explains its stability compared to the above
>> So? Who suggested that you buy a device that wasn't ready for prime-time - let alone three!? Did I suggest that you should have bought into *any* version of WINCE let alone the older and worse versions? I'm simply saying that just because the older versions were not up to snuff, doesn't mean this latest version or the next version (if there will be one) is no good or won't be any good.<<
I waited two years for WindowsCE to mature before taking the plunge and forking out the then NLG 2216 for my 680 , a strategy that paid off handsomely as it resulted in a mature and stable product I have used incident-free over the past three years
Nederlandse Spoorwegen came to the same conclusion and ordered theirs at nearly the same time
>> The HP Jornada of today is not the same thing as the HP Jornada of a few years back. That's not to say there's no room for improvement - there is - but that a Jornada 7xx is a fine palmtop with a lot of capability.- some of which even bests a Psion.<<
In fact the break in terms of improved specs and functionality started with the 680 in spring 1999 , this brought a high-performace CPU ( Hitachi SH-7700 ) without breaking backward compatibility with the older SH-3 -BASED CE 1.0/1.1/2.0 devices , fall 2000 saw the transition to the StrongARM , as at that time the availability of software started to catch up and it became clear that the SH-7700 would become a dead end ( no compatible low-power/high-performace architecture available , like INTEL's x-scale 9 ARM V5L) and AMD's Alchemy (SGI MIPS-compatible )
The whole range from the 680 and up beats the crap out of the smaller Psions in terms of speed , stability , functionality , AND independece from the Windows desktop , however they have to accept the netbook as its equal ( for the netbook , the only thing missing is support for SCSI cards in its PCCard slot )
When it comes that the choice of handheld also determines the choice of desktop OS , the coming migration of Palm to the Pocketpc hardware platform will make matters worse for the alternative-OS communities as they(palm) too will become dependent on Windows -only features and protocols

Subject: Re: EPOC DIGEST V1 # 089 : ultra pc's , will they kill the pda ?
Often , ultra personals have been mentioned as the next big thing in mobile computing while others lambasted these things for offering neither pda nor desktop functionality So let's have a closer look at the ultra and how it will influence the pda market
What is an ultra pc
Generally it is an unusually small desktop, server or tablet system resp an ultrathin/ultralight notebook
As a criterium , anything weighing less than about 1.25 kilograms qualifies for this term
How does this affect the PDA universe ?
Currently there's a trend underway toward systems as light as 300 grams at price points very close to that of a high-end PDA ( Actually , Transmeta , Linus Torvalds employer , targets a price point around EUR 1000 with one of its reference designs ) Convenience and cost-cutting , not quality is the driving force behind this development - it is just a matter of shrinking existing components and subsystems rather than developing someting new and really exciting -
This also applies to the software side of things as anything written for a regular desktop or laptop will run fine on these things , even the ugliest bloatware and the most obscure and niche operating systems , so in reality these can be substantial money-saver if a corporation adopts these instead of pda's
Yes , of course there are all the trappings of an ordinary pc , such as long boot times and pathetic battery life , but again you cannot have your cake and eat it too ....
With a price point around EUR 1000 , they have the potential of driving high-end pda/pocketpc devices into extinction , people make the calculation that a high-end PDA/Pocketpc with essential accessories also costs around 700-1000 euros and you still need a desktop/notebook in addition , upping spending by another couple of hundred or even thousand euros
A very interesting proposition would be a real PDA based on an ultra PC , actually running a PDA oprating system like WindowsCE or Epoc 16 , as you actually have a pentium-class cpu running at 600 to 1000 MHz , running a standard desktop os in an emulator is perfectly feasible here at or near 1.1 speed levels (Actually it will be a socalled Virtual Machine that allows OS-level multitasking , otherwise it would be impossible to run 32-bit desktop Windows inside Epoc16 ! )
Use it on the road , run the PDA environment alone , going online , load and run the PC OS components necessary to do the job , at the office or at home , run the full PC OS environment , allowing for on-device file conversions and support for peripherals

Hi folks!
To Peter Keene,

Hi Peter,
I, too, received what appeared to be an old UPS5 Digest: however, mine was a truncated edition; it had just a few postings. However, it had something else: a 50Kb .exe file which, presumably, was another bugbear! What is going on indeed!! Accordingly, I wouldn't thank the sender, if I were you: he just forgot your attachment :-)

I would like to use the "Add City" menu option to add some more United Kingdom towns on my S7. Can anyone recommend a good web site to get the longitude and latitude info I need when entering these extra towns into my S7's World application?
