After much help and work, I finally have gotten my Emulator page to work properly. You can now download the "notes" and the 2 other zip files you need. I checked the 3 links using both Opera and IE. I made a few minor changes to the notes plus included an Epoc Word copy of the .txt file. So now I hope that "everything's up to date in Kansas City" - if you're not old enough, that'll probably sail right over your head.  :-)

Subject: Re: Modem connections (Digest #92)

Thomas,

You said that you use a (UK) Psion travel modem in the Netherlands and in France without any problems, and therefore you concluded (if I got you right) that all four wires of the RJ11 socket must be connected. I think however (DISCLAIMER: without ever seeing a Psion travel modem in "real life") that this particular modem model, being in some sort an "international modem" since it is (was :-( ) targeted mosty at traveling users, is wired like a "rest-of-the-world" modem, i.e. using the two inner wires of the RJ11 connector. (Even if you can see all four leads in the socket, this does not necessarily mean that they are really connected to something.) This means that in fact you can connect your modem to most "Continental European" phone networks using a standard telephone cable available in the respective country. (One exception would be the cables shipping with some models of Siemens phones in Germany; they also use the "UK" wiring scheme, but then again, these hardly qualify as "standard telephone cable"...) As you say there came a UK adaptor with the modem, I suppose that this adaptor will, contrary to a standard UK cable, use the inner two wires of the RJ11 plug to connect to the phone wall socket. (Have you used your modem in the UK with a "standard" UK telephone cable instead of the one that came with it?)

Itamar,

you said that in your experience not all phone cables work with modems. Again, I'm tempted to blame the wiring of the cables (inner vs outer leads). In any case, the physical (electrical) characteristics of a modem cable are the same as those of a phone cable.

Best regards

Stephan

Then every time that i try to start the synchronization in the dialog box to select between lotus CC:mail and Microsoft outlook/ exchage e-mail , appears a new line with Microsoft outlook/ exchage e-mail.>>

I can't help with synchronising emails, because I've never tried.  However I did initially find it hard to synchronise data and agenda from my Psion5 with MS Outlook's equivalents.  The trick is to find, using Outlook, Tools, Options, one's "profile".  I set "always use this profile", because I don't know how to create another.

On the PsiWin open Synchroniser, New, Microsoft Outlook, Exchange Settings.  You will find a list, which in my case comprises only "default". From memory I clicked on OK to select this, then OK a few more times.

Subsequently my MS Outlook Contacts <-> Data and Calendar <-> Agenda synchronisations have worked fine.

I hope this helps with your, rather different, problem.

I have on screen keyboards as part of Windows ME and Windows XP. It is only a 265kb file (OSK.exe)  which also requires a .dll file of 32kb, but installing these two files in Win 98SE just gives "This prog has performed an illegal ...etc." and closes down. If you think you can do anything with the files, I can send them to you.

Subject: Rechargable AAs

Hi Digest,

There's been a bit of discussion recently about rechargables vs single-use AA batteriesin the 5mx. I've been using rechargable alkalines (Grandcell) without drama for a couple of years in my MC218. I keep about four sets and cycle between them.

The main reason I turned to rechargables was to keep a high enough charge to write to the CF card. Single-use alkalines give me about 23 hours before the machine starts to shut itself off. But if you count the time from a full 3v charge down to the minimum charge that's safe for writing to the CF card (2.6v), the usable time on disposable batteries is a lot less. I wouldn't want to be throwing away disposables every time they dipped below 2.6v.

I get about 3-4 hours out of newish rechargables from 3v to 2.5v. Then

I swap to a freshly charged set and so on.  The alternative is to keep one new set just for write operations and another that can be fully discharged just for work ... but if you back up frequently as you work, this would be a worse hassle than swapping rechargables every few hours.

I haven't kept a log of my use but I'm fairly sure I'd come out ahead with rechargables. They eventually fail to hold a charge and need to be chucked away.

Not counting an AC power supply, how do other people who use a CF card work with their batteries? Do you toss them before they're fully discharged? Below 2.5v it is quite possible to corrupt your CF card if you try to save to it. Since my 64Mb card is my only backup for all my data I try to avoid that at all costs.

Ed Vesterberg

You're correct - it does depend on how often you change batteries.

Even Duracell Ultras only last me 4 days or so.

If cheapie alkalines last you about 25 days, more power to your elbow.

Merlin supports specialized user-customized toolbars for any file or application. The ones I use are:

System (For the system screen and default for files and applications for which I haven't made a specialized toolbar.)

Data

Word

Email (Includes shortcuts to log onto the net and open the remote mailbox, select and move all messages, close remote mailbox and log off the net)

PhoneMan (Includes shortcuts to send all SMS (not a button on screen if you're using a Revo / Mako)

On my MC218 I also have toolbars for PsiNMEA and Route Planner and some file specific toolbars for some of my Data files etc. to enable automatic sorting etc.

Obviously, O2's SMTP server only handles mail which is adressed correctly. One of the fields "To", "CC" or "FROM" must match a valid address from O2, eg. something lAsk O2 support what they expect or what *your* address is and configure the mail program correctly.

Place the cursor at the beginning of the line below the inserted page break and then press <Del>.

It would appear that a forced page break and a formatting page break are shown the same on the edit display.

Press <Ctrl + Shift + V> before deleting the inserted page break and then again after the deletion, to see the desired effect on the preview display.

Unless it's changed a lot since version 4.00, I would give it a miss.

I first downloaded it, but before I had the time to evaluate it, it stopped working.  I therefore uninstalled it and tried again, but it still would not run.  General opinion at the time was that it put a hidden file on your Psion and this upset many.

Later with the publicity that happened with a new 4.00, on a different Psion, I installed it.  But it had two major problems.

It would open files and then the app would exit without any error message. After a few of these exits, I noticed my memory had almost gone.  These files were not hidden, but were well concealed and used up a lot of memory on C:.  There was no warning and no mention of Mbmview making a folder on C:.

I had been trying to convert small (~150Kb) maps.  They were old OS maps, being only black lines on white in (if memory is correct) .GIF format.  I wanted them as .MBM for RealMaps.

It was unable to handle these small files.  However when converted on a PC, these maps would load into RealMaps, using very little memory.

I finally received my psion 7 and a plug adapter for it. I live in the United States so finding a british plug adapter was difficult. I am using a Psion(Mako) 56k travel modem to venture on the net. I found an ISP Garbersoft.net (www.garbersoft.net) that allows you to use your own software to access the net. Something rare in the United States. The modem and ISP works like a charm.

Someone asked about the Opera browser. I had it installed on my Mako and currently use the new version on my Psion 7. On my mako i used it primarily for looking at web pages offline. Opera is a good browser but has some quarks.

My favorite software so far is:

I am exploring a bunch of other programs. I was wondering if anyone ever made a Template or Macro for writing papers in American Psychological Association or MLA format.

I wasn't really expecting 56K but did hope to get something in double figures at least! I've tried increasing disk and RAM cache and suppressing images but it doesn't seem to help much with the transfer rates (though obviously the page loads faster without images). I can't see anything in modem configuration that would appear to affect it other than speed which is set to 115200 as suggested in the manual. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks  everyone  for  your help with my M L7089 problem. Rolf was the one who got   it  right, the (unnecessary) IR upgrade was the problem. And fortunately my phone doesn't seem to have the keypad tones bug (tones off, works anyway).

e-mail client:

I've seen the alternative e-mail client posted here, but the idea of having to download  a  font  pack of around 700kb in my psion only to be able to use the software  wasn't  very  appealing.  I'll  keep  using the default client for a while.

bluetooth:

Of  course,  I'm  sure this come and goes to the list, but I'll insist just in case.  Any  news  of  a  CF bluetooth card with drivers for the psion? Anyone? Please? <:)

citymaps overlay:

I  have  started  to  use  CityMaps  from tomtom. The software is great, and a wonderful improvement from the palm version (I've used to have the software in my  old  handspring  prism).  But  sadly  the tube stations (I live in London) aren't  included  in  the  map  at  all!  Slowly and painfully I'm building an overlay  with  all  the  tube  stations,  which  will  make  my live even more pleasant.  Anyway, if anyone is interested in having said overlay, just drop a line. And, if anyone has made any other overlay for a citymap map, let me know too.

Yes, the best tip is: don't try Opera! IMO, you will only run into trouble. Opera for the Epoc platform is not stable and if you suceed in installing it you will most certainly run out of memory or experience unexplainable aborts or hangs. Furthermore, Opera can not handle the modern secure banking sites, which otherwise would be one argument for using it.
