Subject: netpad 1400, ER5 v1.51(189), Psiboard
Hi netpad fans! (are there any out there...?)
It wasn't easy for me to get one of these gorgeous gadgets
from Psion Teklogix. There's a good chance that this robust
piece of hardware (not made for normal consumers) will survive
me. For me it's a worthy successor of the good old S5mxPRO.
I've got a question concerning the software keyboard
("Psiboard"). This versatile tool allows for easy changes of the
keyboard layout -- great feature so far. I predominantly use the
netpad as platform for navigation & GPS software and thus
need quite often the degree symbol °. Up to now I was not
able to find this character on one of the ten layouts.
Any ideas, recommendations, experiences on that item?
Thanks, Robert Temme (Germany)

I heard they got the idea because at one time Lotus 123 was the most common WORD PROCESSOR in the USA. (The cells made it so easy to place the text where you wanted it on the page)
Another, similar program was PipeDream on the Cambridge Z88 laptop computer. (Beautiful machine, horrible keyboard)
There you could even split the page into columns.

< Guess I'll have to rent a phone in Italy if I want to be unwired.> Not necessarily. You may rent them here in the US (easier and cheaper). Before I had my dual band Ericsson T28, I had to rent one from Omnipoint (later voice stream, now T-mobile). Call T-mobile, they will be able to get you one. I think the rate was USD$50.00 for two weeks, but not outrageously expensive.

Hi, Jim,
I am happy! a question I can say sthing about!! yeeepi!! Jim, i got a BJC-80 from ebay, 3 months ago. There was many selling. Mine was 60 pounds but I had to buy the cartridges myself (another 10 pounds from ebay too for the black ink one). The portable BJC work very well with the 5mx, the only thing I can think about is that the ink cartridge seems small if you are going to print a lot.
...any more questions about this printer or .... this printer?

Itamar,
Not that I know of. I guess the glass is durable enough not to scratch under normal use. And so long as you stay with the supplied stylus or the after-market ones and don't use something like your hunting knife on the screen, it should be okay.
In my case, the protective film I use gives me a more positive "feel" when you glide the stylus over the screen. Just a personal preference, I would think, rather than a real tecnical issue.

i admit that my reference to the 18 individuals who swelled the number of subscribers to 666 was a weak attempt at apocalyptic humour (because many fundamentalists interpret 666 as big brother type of control by technology) but no slur was intended on anyone and i hope no offence was taken - Psioneering is a universal communal activity and the more Psiontists out there the better!

Subject: PdfPrinter
I've followed the discussions on the release date and cost of the PdfPrinter application with some interest over the last few days.
It's out now for about €34 (Euros) and, for my personal use, well worth the money. For me this is an essential application as it dramatically improves how well I can share information and documents from my Psion.
I have neven been a fan of the various on-Psion conversion applications because of the file types that are used for target formats. I don't like using proprietary formats such as Word and Excel as they are too specific for one platform and, while they can be read on other platforms and using other applications, the carefully crafted layout and fonts will rarely be maintained. With complex documents created on the PC this can even be the case when taking a Word file to another windows PC and the same version of Word.
More open formats such as RTF and HTML either suffer from the same problems to a lesser extent or do not provide the functionality to create complex documents.
Using PDF I know that the document will stand a good chance of looking the way I intended but must be weighed against the fact that PDF documents can not be amended easily (this might not be a bad thing of course).

Steve Hodgson

You can download a free conversion program to run on the Psion itself. This will convert text file to prc files and back again if required. It's driven through the command line so you might find it a little awkward but in my experience it's pretty easy to do.
check out http://www.geocities.com/ebookepoc/utilities.html
The same page also has a download for a Windows conversion tool, I suspect that this is probably MakeDocW by Mark Pierce.

Well, please show some consideration for those who work differently! As an administrator, of course you have back issues handy. Subject: The emulator disseminator: doing the Lord's work in Inverness
I've tried several times to download giant SDK files from the Psion site, only to be told right at the end of the process that the download had failed. A long time ago Julie was kind enough to email me the files in nine chunks, but when I opened them, they failed to weld themselves together.
The other day I discovered Gareth Saunders' site at
http://www.gareth-and-jane-saunders.co.uk/ps_sdks.htm He provides all the SDKstuff and more on CD-ROM at a trivial cost. A quote from this page:
>>
CD-ROM Contents
* Symbian/EPOC R5 SDKs (C++, Connectivity, Java, OPL, Revo, Patches and Fixes)
* SIBO Emulators (Series 3 Classic, Series 3a, Siena, WorkAbout)
* OPL Manuals (Windows Help, EPOC Help, SIBO .dbf, HTML, PDF)
* PsiWin (PsiWin 1.1, PsiWin 2.1, PsiWin 2.3.2, PsiWin 2.3.3)
* Psi-Sync for MS Outlook (for SIBO - shareware/unregistered)
* Screensavers (Psion logo for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95+)
* OVAL 1.21 SDK (SIBO VisualBasic-style SDK for Windows)
* Various SIBO and EPOC applications
* Various PC programming tools and applications
CD-ROM Notes:
* The CD-ROM is shipped labelled, in a jewel-case box and a padded-envelope. I enclose a letter of receipt with every order.
* I use Nero Burning ROM 5.5 and Avery DesignPro 2000 label printing software. I just thought you might be interested.
* I also have the Symbian Quartz 6.1 SDK available. Due to the size it requires a separate CD-ROM.
* I do not (yet) have the Netpad OS or SDK. If you can send me these I would be very interested, as I do not have broadband access and it would take ages for me to download them.
Charges
In order to cover material costs, postage and packing and my time I charge the following:
* £5.00 UK
* €10.00 Europe
* $10.00 USA / Rest of World
* or make me an offer which may catch my attention, such as software exchange, etc.
>>
You can trust this guy (he's Assistant Curate at St Andrew's Cathedral, Inverness, after all) - I got my CD a couple of days after PayPalling him my fiver.
So, thanks to Gareth, I now have a working emulator for my 5mx to play with. (Expect numerous Emulators-for-Dummies-type questions on the Digest soon).
A great resource. (And he hadn't even heard of the Digest till I told him about it! I hope he's subscribed now.)
So somebody send him that Netpad stuff he wants, will you?

19 or 63 - I am an adoptive one, though. Btw, the counting is typical ;-) I still remember: my first discussion ever in Germany was about Shakespeare. A NY artist living in Berlin recently told me: "Germans are great, but you can seldom have a normal conversation, they always start talking about serious things". ;-)
> out of interest, did anyone ever scratch a screen with normal use ?
YES. I'd dropped my pen and it became scratchy or it just caught a grain of sand. What is "normal" use, btw, for a Psion? ;-)
btw: last call for protective foil:
Willing to order several for cost s+p&p, for anyone interested.
Price: between 5 and 3 EUR depending on number ordered
Jan R Gustafsson wanted two, I`ll take two - cost fttb: 4 EUR+p&p
Anyone else? I'll wait for another couple of days, kindly email me offlist.

Subject: netbook upgrade
In September I heard Psion had updated the PCB on all new netBook products to increase the power to the PC card slot allowing use of ISDN and GPRS connectivity. When I rang the repair centre to enquire about the possibility of upgrading my netbook to take advantage of this they told me to ring back as they hadn't decided whether they were gioing to offer this or not. When I next spoke to them they said they were going to offer this upgrade and that they would email the details. I waited for the info but it never arrived so I rang them again to be informed that they had stopped offering this upgrade 10 days ago! And that it was not going to be repeated in the future!
Did anyone manage to get this upgrade performed? The guy I spoke to seemed confused as he suggested I contact POS and they aren't allowed to offer repairs to either the Series 7 or netBook, so I'm wondering if what he told me was actually the full story. Anyone have any more info?

I use CDCheck which is free for personal use. A copy of what I assume is the same software is on PC Plus' SuperDisc this month. But it is not very fast. My PC is a 233 with a 16x DVD drive and it took about seven minutes to check a CD-R that was fairly full.

Size issue?
my netBook fits quite nicely in my backpack, or the sidebag on my bicycle...
Why I use it instead of a laptop?
1. Battery life.
2. instant on.
3. Solid! (No laptop could ever take the same beating as my netBook)
4. Apps that does what I want of them...
5. Rock solid OS.
That's my reasons...

Not only are they still making them, but they released an upgraded model in September. (Can deliver more power to the PCMCIA port, enabling it to use more network cards and such)
> Will I have to convert each file to another format?
You should probably synch the contacts with Don'tLook or something, then synch with the target.
> Does Psion convert to Palm?
Nope...
Psiwart only converts to Windooze based formats, so you'll have to do a conversion from those to your target platform afterwards...
Luckily, Psiwart allows for Drag'n Drop conversion of multiple files at one time...

Subject: "funny" netBook screen
I'm sending this message/query to all AND to Itamar because my last two messages to a funny thing is happening to the screen of my netBook. There has been difficulty with calibration of the scren for some time. The other night, the screen stopped responding altogether. After a HARD reset (the kind where you take the two batteries off for several minutes), it started responding again, but not well. In most cases, the effect is one to two cm off, always on the same side e.g. if I put the stylus on one word of this message, the hit appears way on the left. However, in some applications, Phoneman for instance, this "off" effect disappears and the hit is exactly where I put the sylus. Any explanation? suggestion? thanks in advance francois *++++++++++& Date: 6 Nov 2002 23:04:28 +0100 From: Itamar Engelsman Subject: CF port, Series 7 move, Countries of subscribers, Series 7 Memory Problem, Answer to: Owen H. Morgan Re. CF port - I don't think you are right. People were not driven away from Psion because of a lack of CF port. How many users after all use the CF slots at all ? Only a very small % use their Psion for emailing and browsing, most just as an elevated diary, data base with some games included. And yes, Psion never looked at their products as a stand-alone computer, but as a PDA next to a computer. Answer to: John Morris Re. Series 7 move - Of course, the S7 is easily carried in your hand while walking, moving between car and office/house, fits neatly in a normal attache case together with other contents, indeed switches on instantly to just look up a number or a data. But no, it does not hang on my belt when going to the theatre, a restaurant or visiting friends. The question is, do you really need all that info with you 24 hours a day ? If so, use EpocSync to synchronise your Revo with the S7 and take the Revo when the S7 is too big. Answer to: Rolf Vonau Re. Countries of subscribers - Interesting you can obtain these details from the subscribers list. Could you try and make a list of all the countries we have subscribers from with the numbers ? Certainly would be interesting to know. Of course some email addresses are ".com" and will not show the country of origin. Answer to: Andrew Gardner Re. Series 7 Memory Problem - If you really did a hard reset the S7 would have restored the factory settings and you should have been able to work again. A good was to make sure you did a hard reset is to take out both the main and back-up batteries and leave it for 15 minutes or so. It could be that the back-up you are trying to restore is faulty.
