Hi Guys,
For Itamar re production of Psion machines:
You wrote: "Unfortunately all Psion machines are out of production but for the netBook."
I'm not sure about that Itamar - Psionet in Cape Town are still getting new-build S5mxs. They're even advertising them in the morning daily broadsheet here (and, I believe, selling quite a few of them). Then, of course, there's the netpad and the other industrial machines :-)

Subject: NOKIA 6210e
Hi guys,
I've been following the comments about the Nokia 6210e with interest.
I don't know what the 'e' means, down here it was sold as the 6210, but I've been using one for over a year now without problem. I use it for sending and receiving e-mails (including this one) and faxes (less often) and have even surfed with it a bit when away from a landline connection. I have also sent and received e-mails with it on a moving train deep in the Karoo, far from civilisation. I can remember only two dropped connections. Maybe I was lucky in the handset that I got.
One thing - because of the built-in antenna, Nokia reccomend placing the handset upside down, when used as a modem, to expose the antenna.

Hello Andy,
May be you will be interested having a look at MenuS5 which is an applications launcher and stay in memory.
You can set as many different configuration files you want, for the Revo each file is a set of 7 pages and each pages can have 26 applications or documents of folder sets. For the Series 5 it is 10 pages and for the Series7 15.
It is not freeware, it cost $15 ($19 via Regnet or Handango). The evaluation version has some limitations.
But maybe you already tested it and it does not meet your requirements.

Subject: Epoc Digest and DigHandler sw
Hi all!
Rolf Vonau is one of those nice guys who strive to give us this digest. He is also the author of DigHandler, a software which makes reading and other handling of postings to the Digest very easy and straightforward. However, I was disappointed to hear the other day that Rolf has very few registered users of DigHandler. With over 600 digesters now, one would expect that more than a handful would use it and register it.
My suggestion: use the fine sw DigHandler and show Rolf (and the other on the Epoc Digest team) your appreciation by registering for use!

Re. GPRS - I think the best option is to use GPRS for downloading mail to GPS for sending out mail unless you send very long messages. For one reason or another the sending of messages takes almost double the bytes of the size of your messages.

Look here for modem-settings. Choose your model from the list, print the next page.
In German, but probably understandable to anyone

If the authors cannot be found in any way (phone directory assistance of city of last adress - usually mentioned in Help; Internet search by name); it should be okay to write a plugin for regit... If they can be found they might be willing to offer it for download as freeware.
The understanding regarding most shareware is indefinite support.
It is also a legal matter, not only one of ethics, though.
My analogy would be: if a parking meter is broken, you are allowed to park there for free.

Try the rubber tip of a lead pencil, wooden or mechanical. Works a
treat, very positive.

I would think 'I don't want to be any part of it!'
It doesn't matter if the author has seemingly disappeared off the face of the Earth, it's still HIS PROPERTY.
If you asked 'what do you think about trying every means available to track down the author and getting a generic code or code-free version of the program?', then it's another matter entirely...

Not everywhere...
The cost of HSCSD here in norway is only twice the cost of a 'simple data connection', so if you get three times the speed, it's cheaper than a normal data connection. (As long as the idlee time is kept at a minimum)

Too true....
And with the typical connect time of 10 seconds or more unless you can get reliable connection to an ISDN node, those costs can soon add up.

Walking down memory lane...
I've been playing with a Siena these last few weeks..
Several colleagues have asked 'where can I get it?' and 'is it new?'
Most refuse to believe it's old...
They also plain refuse to believe the battery statistics...
(14 - 15mAh)
Then I got the external SSD drive for it.
Since it connects to the RS232 port I hoped that there was a way to make it work with my netBook, but...
The plug looks identical but isn't, so it only fits the Siena. (I don't have a S3c or S3mx to try on yet)
It's also just as fast as the internal SSD drives on any other SIBO model, so it's plainly NOT using Serial communications. (The Siena is limited to 19200baud)
But the worst thing about it, is...
The bl**dy thing needs an AC adapter(Comes with the S3 PSU)
no battery power at all...
I guess that means Psion boffins can make mistakes, too...

Hi
I am at present using my Revo with psiwin 2.
The computer is a Pentium 3 450mhz with windows 98.
I am soon to replace this with a AMD ATHLON XP2200+ 266 Mhz FSB with Windows XP.
Can you please tell me whether this version of psiwin will work with Windows Xp, and if not how I can resolve the situation ?
Many thanks.
Gordon.

Subject: Subject: Marketing of Psion in US
Paraphrasing Susan,
If I can add my two cents (Euro) worth to the failed efforts to market Psion in the US, I read a little known story in Butter and Pogue's fascinating book on the development of Palm (Piloting Palm, Wiley, 2002). When in 1994, Jeff Hawkins and his small team were desperately looking for allies in order to develop the Palm, they approched Psion which, they knew was leading the market in Europe. The idea, for a start, was to write a connectivity software together. The CEO of Palm, Donna Dubinski had a meeting with Psion people at Psion's San Francicsco office (did you know they had one?). We are told that the meeting went well, but that Psion ultimately decided to write its own software.
Assuming the story is not apocryphal, we can speculate how different History might have been if...

Philip,
I think you may have a tiger by the tail with this question...
Personally I feel that this is not an option and would be morally (and
more importantly, legally) wrong. It's disappointing when a developer
moves on and does not continue to support even registration but we have
to recognise that that is their right. The alternative is to look
round for an alternative package or even develop one.
Even on grounds of practicality, who can make the judgement that an
author has 'disappeared'? To take a couple of hypothetical examples,
say an author reappeared after a long-term illness or prison sentence -
have they somehow lost the right to an income from the product they
originally developed and brought to market simply because they failed
to respond to queries and correspondence? If you have a second house
and don't use it for a number of years, don't answer mail to that
address while still paying utility bills (analogous to an author
maintaining a web presence) - do I have the right to break down the
door and move in, simply because the community judges that you've gone?

Steve Hodgson

From all the other postings on this it sounds as though this is a
recognised problem. What are the alternative phones that don't exhibit
this problem? I would probably still want to stick with Nokia as the
menu system and setup is so intuitive.

Does anyone know where I can get a MMC to PC card converter? I simply want to use it to allow me to back up the MMC in my Nokia Communicator to a folder on my S7 using the PC card slot. I don't have a PC so one of those ones that connect via USB would be of no use to me.
