Subject: BCC on Compuserve Classic?
I've got Rolf's modified e-list software up and running and it is indeed atreat (thanks Rolf, thanks Itamar). Only one problem, and it is the reason
I didn't make it past the first cut for the list support team: Earthlink +EPOC mail client doesn't support BCC. When shaking down the list I had anumber of people complain about the potential for attracting spam by havingall 180 some addresses showing.
My first thought was to wait until my big machines get up here and see ifEarthlink with the Earthlink mail client supports BCC. I could run ROLF'ssoftware, then transfer the created email address list to my Dell and paste
it into the email client.
My current thinking (I like to work where ever I am - that's why I use aPsion wherever possible instead of the Dell) is to sign up for a CompuserveClassic account and use it for list email. I see a second list serving
poets in the area coming up so the $8 a month would be easily justified.
Can anyone out there running Classic Compuserve on a Psion machine tell mewhether or not Classic Compuserve supports BCC?
TIA,

Answer to: Rolf Brunsting
First of all I think Rolf is a good developer on the basis of working
several months with his digest program to run this digest. Secondly, if youdid not succeed to run the program RepEvMail, why did you not at least
contact the developer instead of simply deleting the program ? As there aremany satisfied users of the program, it could of course also have been yourparticular problem instead of a general one ?
Your last remark I find a little "below the belt". Even if a program wouldhave a problem, that does not say anything about the other programs written
by the same developer, and certainly would not be a reason to announce your"blackmailing" the author in public. Even large commercial softwarehouses
have succesfull and unsuccsesfull programs (Windows has got very stable aswell as totally unstable versions).
Personally I use neither RepEvMail nor Dighandler so cannot comment oneither.

Hi All
It always aggrieved me that I couldn't get onto the net with my Orange JustTalk (pay as you go tariff) Nokia 6210. Now that I have moved house there isno signal from Orange so I have swapped over to TMobile on contract. Forreasons that I won't bore you with I also decided to have a TMobile pay as
you go SIM to put into my spare 6210. Just as a matter of interest I pointedthe Psion at it and bingo - connected to the net. Amazing. Why can'teverything be this easy?

Andrew, thanks again. Actually before I even had to try, I found on thePsion website, a version of Web for Revo, and it runs perfectly without anyadjustments.
Re RepEvMail
In the light of Rolf B's criticism of it, I would like to compliment Rolf Von this freeware application, which I use on a regular basis, and to thankhim
for the unpaid time spent on it. Yes, it takes a little time to set up, butnot that long, and the finished product is well worth the trouble IMHO.

You may have a look at the Pentax PocketJet 200(http://www.pentaxtech.com/Products/PJ200/PJ200_frameset.html). It's an25,5*5,5*3,0 cm small and 513g light thermal printer for A4 or Letter paperformat. The main disadvantage is that you need 'special' paper for thermalprinting (like fax paper) and that you can only print black/white. For usewith infrared you need an additional infrared adapter also supplied fromPentaxTech.
> Would I have to install any further drivers for your suggestion

Yes. The PocketJet uses his own drivers, which have to be installed on thenetbook (about 20kB).
> I would also like the option for it to use battery power as well as mains. The PocketJet is powered by a NiCd-Battery and is shipped with a mainsadaptor/charger.
I'm using a PocketJet 200 for about 1 1/2 years regular and are still happywith this leightweight 'rucksack-suitable' printing solution. Printing
quality is sufficient for my personal needs as i'm usually printing text andonly seldom graphics. I call the combination of my Series 5mx, the PocketJetand a mobile phone: '1 Kilo Office' ;-)
Other mobile printers I know, but haven't used are the BJC-50/55/85 familyfrom Canon and the Hewlett-Packard HP Deskjet 350CBi.

This sounds like you may be using so-called "Smart" dialling. This is
set as part of the Internet service settings in the control panel.
When I first moved to OS build 158 I started to get problems with this
and wouldn't claim to have sorted it yet as some combinations of mobile
/Gold Card and location don't quite hand together.
The closest I got to fixing this was via the 'infinite monkeys'/'HomerSimpson' approach of pressing all combinations of buttons until I got
things reasonably close.

Hello,
To Astrid:
I understand your point of view, and what would be fair is that the authormake it available as freeware or provide a generic code to all. Some authorshave done that and others don't. In this last case nobody has to blame theauthor and this for many reasons: when a software is made available asfreeware because the author abandonned it, he still receive emails from
users asking to implement this or that etc... But the author does not want
to take care about it anymore, so sometime it is better to stop everything.
Just as general information, a software is fully protected by the copyright, and in Europe, the period of protection for Copyright has been extended from50 years to 70 years after the death of the author. So...... since somebodycan do something with it.......

I've noticed that many postings to internet digests/lists etc have manyspaces between words missing. I've always put this down to poor typing

However my posting that ended the last Digest had lost many spaces, so I hada look in my 'Sent' folder. The spaces aren't missing there. Any ideas?

Hi Rolf,
I would like to answer to your a.m. mail:
At first I would say that its tone isn't netiquette-like.
Concerning the programs I think, everyone is free to use them or not, even
to choose their developers. As hundreds of people do use it and aresatisfied, it could of course also be your problem.
When you unsuccessfully tried to install the program RepEvMail, why did younot ask me like other users to give support?
At last I would point out, that all people using the program was satisfiedwith the instruction. I can't say that the instruction is without faults.
But just as Owen (the well known in this Digest Owen H. Morgan) stated, thatmy English translation of both the program and the instruction was bad, heproposed me (and did it) to improve the translation of the RepEvMail ! Thankyou again, Owen. That's what I call helping criticism.

Answer to: Rolf Brunsting
Re. Using S7 in the car - I actually meant a way to use it together with aGPS to follow a route in route- or streetplanner. Tonight I just put it on
my dashboard for a few minutes of local driving. The quality of the screen
is of course great in comparison with the 5MX in car use. The heads up makessense on the S7 screen, not on the 5MX. Now I'll have to find a way to
attach it securely for use while driving, near enough to the steering wheelnot to lose eye contact with the road while glancing on the map.
Re. Marketing of PDA - You wrote "you end up with a product that's nodifferent from theproducts of five or six Pocket PC competitors". That's why
I believe Psion will never get back into the market - if it would wish to -with a "me too" product, and it would have to be some new innovation. Youcontinue to write "The new Symbian OS based Psion is more difficult to
design as you'll have todo the job yourself", that's why it will be very
hard for Psion / Symbian ever to get back into the market.

Subject: Psion Marketing in North America (and elsewhere)
Francois Boller, Rolf Brunsting, Jim Cooke, Itamar Engelsman, Susan Hoffman, and others have all given their slant why Psion's US marketing failed.
Another factor might have been Psion's failure to get together with Apple. Iread rumours of meetings between the two, but nothing came of them. Yet
since production of the Newton and the P3 ceased there has been no
convenient PDA for Mac users. File transfer between the P5 and Macs was
never easy. File transfer between Palm and Mac is easier, and Apple now
touts the Palm as a companion to the Mac, but the Palm lacks theout-of-the-box abilities of the P3 or P5 (word processor, spreadsheet, database and keyboard) and even when fully optioned, lacks the simpleconvenience and wider capabilities of the Psions (keyboard; bigger,
landscape, screen; better battery life etc.). And given the strong loyalty
of Mac and Psion users, and the complementary nature of the two platforms, Iwould have expected a strong synergy between them.

All Psions are out of production except for the "net" series (netBook,
netpad)...but sometimes they make a few more 5mx's to keep up with demand. You can't say the 5mx is an improvement as it was out before the Revo...theRevo was released as a smaller version of the 5mx (minus a few features; CFslot, backlight, regular batteries, smaller screen)...just like the Siena
was a smaller version (also minus a few features) of the 3c series machines. The internal memory of the Revo can be increased but at the same time you
will decrease your battery life. The loss per day of the 8 meg Revo is 3%and the 16 meg Revo Plus is 5-6%. Anyway, a company that does internalmodifications on the Revo is http://www.pda-upgrade.20m.com
Regarding the financial program, head to the EPOC section of
http://www.tucows.com and look in the productivity section. I can't give
you a direct link as it's different depending on what country you're from.
As for getting a 5mx, look on eBay or eBay.co.uk for used ones. Maybe youcan get a new one shipped to you from www.posltd.com in the UK.

after it was mentioned inthe current issue of PalmTop User. For those

At the back of my mind I want to make sure that one day in the(hopefully distant) future when I am moving files away from a Psion to

printing individual messages to PDF there didn't seem any other way toarchive the files for future reference. Seems like a good way to keep

I'll probably get round to registering this application once I've
played around a little more (innovative method of registration BTW) but
just wondered if anyone knows whether the 'splash' screen at startup

Subject: Re: Shareware, registration codes and 'morality'
Dear All,
There are a few things I find strange about this discussion.
The first is that people seem to be unaware of what copyright means eventhough copyright isn't a recent phenomenon. The first international
agreement, the Berne Convention for the Protection of Library and ArtisticWorks, was ratified on September 9th, *1886*. This convention was based onexisting national copyright legislation and bilateral agreements. Currentversion of the Berne Convention is the 1972 (Paris) Universal CopyrightConvention. All nations around the globe have ratified the convention. One
of the last to do so was the People's Republic of China.
The second thing is that some people don't seem to consider the supply ofshareware as a business. A product is developed, brought to market and sold.It therefore shares a characteristic with other businesses - that the
product can be removed from sale. Rather unpleasant when you've just madeyour mind up and are keen to buy the product. Still, it's one of those
'facts of life'.
The business can even cease trading altogether so that the plug is pulled
out of the web site and e-mails land in the giant bit bucket in the sky. Inother words, there's nothing strange about not being able to contact ashareware author anymore. A company address and phone number we've stored inour Psions may no longer be valid for the same reason - the company has
ceased trading without us knowing it.
Third item is that not being able to contact the author is deemed sufficientfor people to feel free to do with the application what they like. Reasonsgiven are the principles of 'lost and found' and 'salvage of what's beenabandoned'. Both principles don't apply because:
1) A shareware application is never 'lost'. The business model of theshareware author is based on the free duplication and distribution of ademonstration version of the application. One of the side effects of the
model is that demo versions can still be around long after the author hasgone out of business.
2) Software is covered by copyright for a period of 10 years (if memoryserves me well) with no strings attached. Copyright remains in force when
the software is withdrawn by the author (well) before the protection periodis over. Claiming salvage is therefore of no use at all.
What I find really disappointing in this discussion is the proposal tocollect shareware applications that have been withdrawn from sale and to
start selling them with registration codes from a 'friend' who has broken
the coding scheme. The call for an 'honest person' to handle the
registration side of the scheme is laughable. What's honest about stealing
an application from the author and using it to raise money? I wonder what
the charity the proceeds are supposed to go to will think when they it hearsthe donations come from Shareware Theft & Developer Defrauding Ltd.
And then I'm not even talking about the effect this scheme will have on theshareware developer community. Is it interesting to release an
EPOC/SymbianOS application when you know there are people within the usercommunity who have the idea your application is for the taking? It only
takes one idiot to think you've 'abandoned' the application and there goesyour little source of income.
And that's what it is for most shareware authors - a *little* source ofincome. Only a small number of shareware authors can live from the proceeds
of their applications. The vast majority of shareware isn't even priced tocompensate for the investment in equipment and development tools plus thenumber of development and (technical) support hours. Quite a number ofshareware titles wouldn't have been profitable anyway because their salesvolume will never reach break-even point. The knowledgeable amateurs andsemi-professionals who develop and support shareware in their own spare timeshould be supported. They should NOT be given a slap in the face by stealingtheir work when time has come to call it a day.

Hi Folks,
Well I have rejoined the symbian community rather sooner than I anticipated. My son's phone died and I decided that the best way to proceed was to
upgrade my eric t68 and let him have it. I decided to try the 7650 as Orangehave changed their policy on upgrades and you have a week to decide whetherthe upgrade is suitable.
I was really unsure if the 7650 was what I wanted but have been surprised
and have decided to keep it. The keys are just as small as t68 but morewidely spaced so I find it easier to use. I just could not get nokia connectto work on my works pc but the documentation sounds very like epoc connect.
Fortunately Mac OS (Jaguar) comes with bluetooth support and drivers built
in and with a bluetooth exchange programme so I am able to drop .sis files
on it and off they whiz to the 7650 and get installed. The mail prog workswell and is obviously the psion / symbian one with about a trillion foldersand an index file. I just hope things have improved from my 5MX and revo
days and orphaned messages and attachments aren't a problem. Calendar isfairly basic but so am I and the screen is fantastically clear. Contacts isalso very useable and both are fairly reminiscent of psion and palm
offerings. To-Do is too basic with no alarm and I will try to find areplacement to download. Notes is very basic, need a prog to cut and pastebetween progs.
WAP is more useable than on t68 because of larger and clearer colour screen.Memory is tight with theoretical 4Mb but I won't load too many progs (5
extra downloaded so far and 2.9 Mb free after contacts, diary etc filled).
Now I have to work out syncml can be utilised to synchronise contacts andcalendar as network connection with Mac and Palm (I can send single itemsquite easily).

Palmtop did in the past sell upgrade CDs at a reduced price, that requiredthe previous version installed on the Psion before the upgrade would run.
This then stopped about the time they started to use TomTom and I was unableto get any response from dealers or Palmtop. Eventually, by e-mail, I wassold an upgrade by Palmtop at an upgrade price, but the CD did not require
the previous version to be installed.
There were only new maps and cosmetic changes (the name changed to CityMapsand the red palm icon appeared) to the app. No real change to the app hasbeen noticed, but (as has happened before) no features were removed that I'maware of.
Their web site is often missing details of new products available, even
those that have been e-mailed direct to registered users.
Now a question. On NGs there are postings about the new PocketPC Navigatorproduct. Are the overlay files compatible with EPOC overlays?
