Subject: Mako (Revo Plus) battery problems
I know there's a lot written about battery problems, but I've never seen referenceto this particular problem, which has been with me for some time. My batterysometimes simply won't charge at all. It goes down to perhaps 50-75%, at whichpoint the device won't turn on unless it's plugged in. I plug it in to recharge it,the red and green lights show that it's fast charging, but in fact it's not -- infact, the battery is going down even though it's plugged in. The fill-up icon showsno movement at all, and ChaDis says that the Mako is in "trickle charge" -- and eventhat is misleading, because it's not charging, it's actually discharging (that is,the battery level is declining).
So far, each time this has happened, the Mako has eventually recovered and startsrecharging again. I'm afraid, though, that some time it won't do that. I havetried completely resetting the battery as suggested in the ChaDis material, but thatseems actually to make the problem worse.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

everything be this easy? >>
T-Mobile p-a-y-g SIM cards are data enabled by default. Some time ago I
bought a One2One Motorola phone from Argos for £20 including £10 of calls.
The phone went in the bin and the SIM is now in my Siemens S35i, which I'veused for Data calls for about a year now since cancelling the contract on
it. I also have a Virgin SIM in an old Ericsson A1018s and that supports
both Data and Fax on p-a-y-g.

Hi Melvin
IMHO you have THE battery problem (which I am unexpectedly experiencing at themoment, also!) Anyway, unless we are both extremely unlucky there may be a remedy:I am working on info from Kevin Millican (thanks, Kevin), see
http://millican.info/Home/RevoBats.htm, and I'm fairly sure it may assist...

Hi Guys,
For Bernard Olij re missing TCP/IP compnents:
First a comment - Web is part of the S5mx ROM so it should not be neccesary toreinstall it after a hard reset. I'm assuming therefore that you're using an S5mxPro, which I again assume can install the standard apps as required by the user?
Whatever, I've mailed you the TCP/IP files off digest. Copy them to the Systemsub-folders as I've indicated.
It's a good idea to back up the C drive frequently so that you don't lose thirdparty apps or data after a hard reset :-)

Hi there,
Go to the "dsektop"/System screen.
Try Menu, File, List, List open files, and see what you've got running.
Close everything except System (if a program won't close use Shift Cntrl E, insteadof the usual Cntrl E) and then try again.
That might do the trick. If it does, only open what you need to use in future! All the best,
Kate!!

Melvin, besotted as I am with my own Mako battery problem, I have just realised that"not enough memory" and "batteries too low" are two different things! and I may havegiven wrong advice above...sorry. In your case, a reset is probably the answer, Ithink.

Subject: Morality (for Rolf Brunsting and Henri Spagnolo)
Hi Rolf and Henri,
Copyright
Actually, although copyright itself may not be a universally recent phenomenon, insome places it is. In this particular arena (software for ephemeral hardware) therules are not clear-cut and such rules as there are may need to be modified for thisreason. Certainly the current rules render such (abandoned and crippled) softwareuseless, even if the copyright only persists for 10 years which is not the positionunder UK law.
Shareware as Business
Supplying shareware is indeed a business. When a shareware owner effectivelydisappears, cannot be found, cannot be contacted and cannot be paid (s)he haseffectively abandoned that business and any of it's products to any other hands.
Laissez-faire
The debate is how to reasonably deal with this problem without stealing. Rolf, asfar as I'm aware *no-one* has suggested selling these applications. As a point ofargument or a request for opinion the matter was, I believe, raised but it wasn't aproposal and I resent you saying it was.
You seem to think this is just a scheme to steal software from people - it isn't orit wouldn't have been raised here. If you disagree you can say so without accusingothers of such dishonesty.
It's not kind.
This debate won't result in universal agreement (or happiness either) but it oughtto result in a consensus that whatever the majority decide they are *not* beingmorally dishonest because the alternatives have been discussed and considered.
But I must repeat, any copyright holder's expressed wishes about such softwareshould be respected. If they choose to withdraw it (for any reason) then that'stheir right.
That's why I agree with you, Henri, but the debate shouldn't be about such expressedwishes or deeds, it should be about truly abandoned software only. As you say, thecopyright may last for 50 (or more) years after the authors *death*. That's why thisdebate must be about morality as the legal position is both clear and asinine (inthis case the law is an ass, but the situation didn't arrive until computerprogramming did).
Take care,
Phil.

Subject: Re: Shareware registration codes (Rolf B.)
I tried to resist the temptation to join in this topic, but Rolf Brunsting's lastletter was extremely confused, and forced me to break my silence.
Let's see the cases in detail:
1. Demo available, author available: no question: take it or leave it.
2. Demo available, author not available: pls.. authors make your software FREEbefore leaving (like Steve L. did) and remove any e-mail, web address from the lastfreeware version if you worry for being molested. (BTW this is a common way ofmarketing authors use for their own sake: turning the old S3, and some new S5software free [see Neuon policy]: it increases the number of potential visitors atthe authors website). My suggestion: it is worthy to surf the web, perhaps thefreeware version is somewhere out there.
3. Demo available, author not available, no freeware version: that is the saddestpart. Honest citizen must forget about the software.
BUT if you crack it or ask for a code, Rolf B is wrong, you are not a thief: you areusing unlawfully a licence, you are breaking copyright law (for "registration" iswhat you get when you pay, not the software itself) which is serious sin indeed, butdifferent from theft. The reason we must understand the subtle difference is thepoint that you do not do any harm to the author, because he had not expected anymore income (that's why he stopped supporting the SW), while a thief always does bytaking your property. Of course, generally speaking, cracking is harmful morally forthe whole author community. My suggestion: DO NOT crack it.
4. Software registered, author not available: this is more and more frequent inEPOC5 world, and a serious problem. And here the author's behaviour is unlawful, andalthough he is not a theft by definition, his act DOES harm the user. How? And why?Registering a software is signing a contract. And ALMOST ALL the shareware authorsoffered too much in this contract: FREE support and upgrade for UNLIMITED period oftime, or without a DEFINITE time limit.
They did/do it for 4 good reasons:
- 1. they really believed in the long lasting EPOC5 era
- 2. their products were far from perfect and they were greedy to get
money even in the early phase of SW development (and the
promised free upgrade could convince hesitant users)
- 3. they simply did not dare to build in a time limit to alert theirpotential
users, and send them to other authors
- 4. it is very cheap and really tempting to promise something superior,
the potential user buys rather the 'promise' than the 'as is' product.
(I've many shareware SWs with lively description in the
accompanying text file, what the 'future release' will contain.
No future release of course, the author defrauded his users)
Any reason they had, they are breaking their contracts right now (remember thecomplaints e.g.. about Neuon's disappearance). I am sorry to say but they behavejust the same way the unlawful crackers do: they are escaping from responsibility. The lawful solution to get out from the contract would be:
- official withdrawal of the software, not accepting any new registration,
- informing the registered users by e-mail and offering them different
options: partial repayment for not fulfilling the contract, or further
support on individual basis up to the copyrighted 10 years, or paying
for a third-party author for covering the rest of the contract.
(Releasing the SW is not an option, it does not concern
registered users)
As Rolf B. said "supply of shareware is business", I add: for BOTH parties.Vanishing companies (mentioned by Rolf) can count on serious lawsuit, months oflitigation and years in prison. The same is true for vanishing authors. And theirbehaviour is as dangerous as that of crackers: they discourage potential users frombuying new SWs, and kill shareware market. So the honest authors suffer for them, too.

Hi there,
Why not start with Java? It's on the PsiWin CD, but you'll need to check outhttp://www.hasiland.com/javaonepoc/javac.html (a very useful page to start with!).C and C++ are very similar to Java - there might be a Java C or C++ compiler thatwill run on the Psion, so it might be worth checking the Java Application ReviewService at http://www.jars.com to see if there's one there.
You could always get the C++ developers kit from Symbian, but that will only run onyour pc for creating programs to run on the Psion

Kate!!

Re. MailArc - There is also the program SaveMail that does the same. I use it fromtime to time and it has no nag pages.

Re. Tomtom cityplanner - If the program did not change, the next question is whetherthe maps really improved dramatically enough to warrant the purchase of the newversion ? If there are only more maps without improvement of the existing ones, itwill certainly not be worthwhile for me.

Subject: How to loop a macro a variable number of times?
Hi all,
I am taking over the running of a membership list and would like to try using emailto keep in touch with everyone. The membership list I have inherited is in Excel, and I've converted it into Sheet on my Psion. There is an email column but it hasmany blanks in it. My goal is to get all the email addresses from there into Email.
I have got this far:
I can highlight the column and paste the addresses into Word. Then I have twoproblems:
1. All the spaces are transposed into Word and have to be removed.
2. In order to paste the addresses into Email I have to get rid of all the CRs andadd semicolon-space between each address.
The following macro I have made up does a good job of fixing these two things.
PROC Macro:
SendKey:("Ctrl+a")
SendKey:("Right")
SendKey:("Ctrl+Left")
SendKey:("Fn+Left")
SendKey:("Shift+Down")
SendKey:("Shift+Left")
SendKey:("Ctrl+x")
SendKey:("Ctrl+a")
SendKey:("Left")
SendKey:("Fn+;")
SendKey:("Space")
SendKey:("Left")
SendKey:("Left")
SendKey:("Ctrl+v")
ENDP
A word count tells me how many loops I need to perform, so... can anyone tell me howI can get the macro to ask how many loops to perform, wait for a number to beentered and then off it goes.
Any tips gratefully received? Sergio??
Best wishes, Chri

I've noticed that many postings to <internet digests/lists etc have manyspacesbetween words missing. I've always put this down to poor typing skills and alaziness to read and edit one's text. However my posting that ended the last Digesthad lost many spaces, so I hada look in my 'Sent' folder. The spaces aren't missingthere. Any ideas?>
I've noticed this happens with my carefully created postings too. So I am alsointruiged as to what the answer is. Does anyone know why this occurs?
