Everyone I know has a plan that works the same way (except for prepaid phones) -- you are charged for air-time minutes. Some plans don't charge for the 1st minute of an incoming call, and most have free evening and weekend time.
Most plans now include free roaming within the US; if I call overseas, or when I use the phone in Europe (I have a tri-band Eric T28W) there is a heavy surcharge per minute, but worth it for short calls.

No, they charge you for everything!
It was an ITT precharged card or whatchamacallit.

Anyone knows if the old 2.x maps work in the new version and viceversa?

That would be bad...
Can anyone kindly provide details on the two 3.x versions?

I had someone email me asking if I knew the whereabouts of Ruey Loon, the operator of Portal PDA. This person was wanting one of the battery packs that Ruey has listed on his website, but there's no response from the address givso I thought I'd ask here.
If anyone knows where he is or if Ruey, you're reading this please reply here.

Hi Jan,
Can you supply the abovementioned site address, as i have dutch colleagues who will be able to verify this for us.
If true, sad news indeed - perhaps the digest organisers could send condolences on behalf of our community?

Subject: Allegro for Revo
Hi folks!
On weekend I wanted to show a friend (with PALM) that my PSION understands also handwriting and presented him the program ALLEGRO on my REVO. There he's been very astonished... ;-) But on this occasion once again I noticed that my version 1.01f (012) is still from "series 5"-times and is not meant actually for the smaller Revo screen. At this opportunity I contacted the manufacturer PURPLE SOFTWARE for possibility to update/upgrade, the result was following answer:

Great! :-(
Therefore my inquiry to the list:
Could somebody over here help me please?
Thank you!
Kind regards

Subject: New operators
Due to personal reasons one of the operators of the digest would like to hand over his share to someone else sometime first quarter next year.
The digest has been a reasonable success with just over 700 subscribers worldwide. The program we use has been finalised more or less, and if you are a little experienced in using your Psion and email the sending of each digest should not take more than half an hour maximum.
The main problem is that your email program must allow the sending of an email to many addresses in the BCC field, and these must be hidden too. In our experience Compuserve is a good ISP for this, but other ISP's are possible as well.
While you can send out the digest from a PC as well, you must have the abillity to download email onto your Psion, as the digest program runs on the Psion only.
If you are interested, please send me a message If you answered me back in July, please reconfirm you are still interested.
Best regards,
Itamar Engelsman

Subject: Series 7: ideas for using the"E"drive ?
I have enjoyed using a Series 7 for more than a year. I have a 128MB Sandisk CF card in the "D" drive (left side), but have never once used the "E" drive (right side). Seeing as x-mas is approaching, I thought maybe I'd pep up the Series 7 by getting something for the "E" drive. What kind of accessories can be used with the "E" drive? I'm only aware that IBM microdrives don't work..... what kind of cards/accessories DO work?
Thanks,

Subject: netBook v 7
Hi All
Toby asked about the differences between the 7 and the netBook. Those that instantly come to mind are 32mb (netB) instead of 16mb (7), faster processor on the netBook, more electrical power from the motherboard to power things such as network cards on the netBook, different colour leather cover (dark blue(7) - black(netB)). Real men use a netBook. I am now retiring to a safe distance!!

Subject: Returning Psioneer!
Having spent the last year in the PPC wilderness (ipaq 3660 - now sadly dead) i've just been given a S7 by a very generous friend! I've got psiwin working flawlessly (even on xp!) and have it talking happily to my t68 and isp via hscsd and gprs. That done I'm now wondering about the networking capabilities of the 7. Having only skimmed the digest for the last year, am I right in thinking that the netbook will support 10/100 pcmcia cards, but the 7 won't due to the power requirements of the card? In an ideal world, I'd like to use a wireless ethernet card in the 7 to access my home network - is this too much to ask??

For Bernard Olij:
Bernard my ISP is having trouble sending my e-mails on this subject to you. This is the message I'm getting:
"SMTP timeout while connected to malang.wasantara.net.id [202.159.64.195] after sending data block (8189 bytes written): retry timeout exceeded"
Can you please check with your ISP what the problem is?

I have just brought Citymaps from Clove to run on my netbook with a 1GB IBM micro drive - haven't received it yet. As I do not have a PC I am concerned to read the above. I was hoping to load all the UK onto the microdrive using a friends PC and then be able to copy via IR the files I wanted to my 5mx. Does the above from Alan mean this will not be possible? Ideally I would like the maps Zipped on a CF card and then unzip the ones I need as and when. I might need to check out the registration as I may have assumed wrongly that it is possible to run citymaps on more than one machine, not sure if it breaks copyright or registration legal stuff.
Kind regards

Subject: Morality/Legality
Hi,
Itamar
I'm sorry, I didn't mean the majority of ER3/4/5 users or even the majority of subscribers here would reach a consensus. What I meant, but phrased badly and misleadingly, was that the majority of readers of this digest would agree that this problem was aired here. I did not mean that they would agree with anyone's conclusions.
Jan R Gustafsson reports that a competent shareware author may have, sadly, died. I (and all, I'm sure) hope he has been misinformed. But, if true, that would mean that that author's software will not be available for many years unless his heirs make it so. When their copyright runs out most, probably all, surviving ER3/4/5 machines will be in museums.
But I doubt any shareware author would want their software unavailable. I suspect that they would want it as widely disseminated as possible, whether for profit or not. I know I would.
This is a relevant point, particularly for our chosen platform as it is most unlikely that any new ER3/4/5 machines will be built and so little (or no) profit from shareware. I want my two 5mxs to last as long as possible and I want others to feel the same but if the sources of useful software dry up . . .
Steve Hodgson
Cracking, as to who is to make that call, surely only two people are really involved - the potential user and the cracker? If the author turns up later then his wishes should be respected, and there should be real attempts to contact him/her before. I realise that this is subjective and agreement may be difficult - but nobody said it would be easy!?
I recently got a reply on this subject from a respected shareware author who thinks that the moral question may pose more problems than the legal one. He believes cracking may be legal and the moral question depends, partly at least, on the author. But he raises another question - if the author used another product to create the software what caveats apply there?
Again he thinks that cracking may be legal but *may* be immoral.
Like me, he isn't sure that there even can be a universally right answer. He does think the issue important, as do I.
This will probably not affect me personally but it already affects some and will affect more. Statistically it is likely that some shareware authors will become unavailable each year. I would far prefer that any cracked ER3/4/5 software were distributed by a reputable group than by warez sites.
As ER3/4/5 disappears, and it will, this problem will affect fewer people but it will affect them more dramatically. It would be better to discuss it now, while most ER3/4/5 shareware is still available, than later when it is mostly a dry, academic, exercise.
One thing I'm sure of, I'm sure nobody here wants to criticise anyone else's motives even if they disagree with their conclusions.
Take care,
Phil.

Re: Menus5
I found Astrid's criticisms of Henri Spagnolo's Menus5 rather excessive, to say the least. I, for my part, have been most happy with this shareware, which is sound and easy of use, compared to some more sophisticated competitors: I can get to any app/document/notes within seconds and that is all I need. Also, Henri's support has proven to be immediate and efficient.
Re: "Extinct" sharewares
I wish to congratulate Edgar Brazda on his clearcut position and thorough presentation as to this topic. In particular, too many so-called programmers should understand that business definitively goes either way, wheras they have made their customers lose time, money and energy on their "work" (the same could be meant for Microsoft, by the way...).

Subject: Phone Charges in US
Under every US cell phone plan that I know of, you get a certain allocation of minutes per month. Incoming calls count against those minutes, as do outgoing calls. The same for pre-paid plans, where you "buy" a certain allocation of minutes. Some plans give you "free" weekend and/or evening minutes which would apply to incoming calls from out of the US, but that would not include outgoing international calls. Many plans now include free long distance within the US, and some now allow you to "roll over" unused minutes to the following month.

Subject: Re; Emulator Add/Remove
Just to close this discussion. I got advice from another forum which solved my problem. In essence, I moved my Emulator's Wins\C folder to a Temp folder. Then starting up the emulator caused it to "regenerate" the files it needs. I then copied a wins .sis file to the emulator and the "Add New" function in Add/Remove now works. I ran in some further problems after doing that because instead of reinstalling my apps via the original .sis files, I just copied the Apps back into the emulator from the Temp\Wins\C folder where I had moved them before starting the regeneration. What I failed to realize is that some apps put other necessary files in other folders. Everything is working fine now.
