Thats not quite right. All About Symbian will be involved in some of the discussions (mainly via Ewan Spence of FreEPOC fame). We will certainly not be responsible for handling it as a whole. We're just one of the many interested parties who happened to break the news. That we're on of the biggest ER6 and above communities means inevitably there are a lot of members interested in it. It defintely is true BTW - from the horses mouth.

Subject: XTM - DOS Help needed

I'm trying to test XTM on my 5MX. Several things I need help with.

Can XTM be installed on the D drive? The user manual seemed to indicate you needed to put on the C drive, but in reviewing old internet files, someone said they had it on D.

The DOS problem. The XTM manual seems to indicate there is some trick to getting a bootable DOS disk to install on the Psion with XTM --and a bootdisk made from windows is not workable for XTM.  I downloaded DrDOS but was unable to make a Boot Floppy disk from it. There was a fight with Win98.

Then I found a disk image of Freedos, but don't have a clue how to put it on a floppy... so I can use it with XTM.

Any help with getting a proper boot disk from DrDOS or otherwise would be appreciated.

Itamar,

A few cents worth.

I, too, had to shift to another platform after my Psion devices went on the blink.

I settled on the Handspring Treo 90 because of the built-in thumbboard.

After months of use, I can give these PalmOS-based devices only 2 really good points: 1)  They are more compact than an Epoc device so they slip easily into my shirt or pants pocket 2)  The colored screen.

Other than these two, I miss the Psion. Comparing the two platforms, the Psion comes out ahead on: 1)  Excellent software

    - the built-in applications of Psion (Word, Sheet, etc.) are very, very good

    - built-in Data (which you need to buy if on PalmOS)

    - third-party software (Phoneman, etc.) are also very good

2)  File handling

    - very much like on a PC where you can drag and drop, copy, paste, etc. so easily

3)  Multi-tasking

4)  Larger screen and horizontal, rectangular format

Subject: Strange things are Occurring

Hi All

I bought a new MC218 eons ago and it has been almost unused until recently when I stopped carrying my netBook and started using the MC218 for SMSing (PhonePerson Pro) and setting up the odd HP switch.

Oddity number 1. The MC218 started to cut out immediately the keyboard was touched after switching on when the backlight was on. Batteries had plenty of fizz in them. Changed them early anyway and things seemed to be OK on the next set. Oddly after the next set of batteries the problem returned. Checked the power in the backup battery - Full. I started to look around the net to see who had the stock of 5MXs and if they were a sensible price. Only found some at Exportech (nearly 300 quid - cough!). So where are these last 1000 5MXs? Anyway I digress. Although it sounds extremely unlikely the common factor in the MC218 dying problem seems to be the batteries - you knew it was coming! The batteries came from Woolworth's. They are their own branded alkalines. Anyone shared my experience?

Oddity number 2. Expansys have a neat little system on their website where, if an item is in stock, and you are too tight to pay the full asking price, you can leave your email address to be advised of price cuts. This is what happened in the case of a 128mb CF that I bought ages ago. I looked at the price and thought, "I'm not paying that for it" (remembering my boss had paid 199 ukp for a 32mb when they first came out). After a while you get an email to say that the price has gone down (by about 30ukp if memory serves). I wanted 2 but I bought one. Ten days later another email arrived to say that they had gone down by another 30ukp, so I bought the second one that I needed. I have wanted a couple of 256mb CFs for some time and I have been holding out for the email that tells me that the price has gone down. I have had two emails recently from Expansys to say that the price has gone down, whereas it hasn't moved a muscle. Perplexing?

Has anyone on the list any experience of configuring Baystack or 3Com hubs / switches using comms and the Psion? I am using 9600 8-N-1 No handshaking and can't get into either a Baystack 101 10BaseT hub or a 3Com 3C16950 Superstack2 Switch 1100. The former has a 9 pin dsub comms port as well as a utp management port. I have tried both ports as I have one of www.serialleads.co.uk special PsiWin cables that is terminated in both dsub and utp. There is just nothing at all on either hub / switch whether you have the item up and running and then open Comms or if you boot the device with Comms already running. What am I missing? I have already tried a fully populated null-modem adaptor attached to the cable. I have managed to get into an HP switch just using the special PsiWin cable.

Has anyone with a networked netBook tried EpocVNC across their network? Does it work OK? What sort of network are you using?

Re: MBMview - In the UK when a parking meter is out of order you are not allowed to park there and you will get a ticket if you do.  As personally I registered MBMView a long time ago I have no particular interested in this matter. However, if someone has a problem I suggest you contact the principle of the scout group Johan Rozendal who is in regular contact with the family. He might be able to help in asking the family to make the software freeware if they would like to.

Subject: Morality & Shareware (for Rolf Brunstig)

Hi Rolf,

The legal situation may be different to the moral situation but the legal situation may be neither clear-cut nor the same the world over. The moral situation may be neither either. I'm sorry you seem to think both are as I disagree.

First and foremost, no-one here is talking about stealing. If we were then we wouldn't *be* talking here. We are talking about shareware that appears to be effectively abandoned. We are talking about programmers who cannot be paid. And we are talking about rules rather than laws.

You say that the author may not be reachable but the software can be registered another way - we're not talking about that. If the software can be registered (perhaps through a third party) then it should be. I'm not condoning theft and I doubt anyone here is. If such software can be registered it should be and therefore there should be no problem.

You don't mention my rights as someone who wants to pay nor all the obligations of the copyright holder and the laws of most countries provide such rights and obligations. Consumers also have obligations and shareware authors have rights but as here the author/rights holder is, by definition, unreachable their rights may be secondary (or perhaps even held in abeyance). If I *can't* pay despite trying I might have a legal and/or moral right to the software anyway. If the situation changes my rights/obligations will change too. If legitimate demands are made by the rights holder, whether they are for payment or deletion, then they should be respected.

Payment for use of copyright material itself may not apply to shareware as it is, by it's nature, freely distributed and registration is a minor modification. If that registration is achieved by cracking that may not in itself be a breach of copyright - but though it may not be illegal it may be immoral (certainly by my standards unless the software is apparently abandoned). This is obviously not intended to justify cracking software, just to try to clarify one possible position.

In fact, even if it were illegal it would not be a criminal act but a breach of civil law - the only prosecutor can be the rights holder (as I understand UK law anyway - pro bono publico may apply but doesn't change the situation now). This alone implies that it is more a moral matter than a legal one.

As we all know, a respected shareware author has recently, sadly, died. His rights haven't. If his heirs make his copyright available, either freely or otherwise, then no problem arises. If they refuse any problems should be resolved without using that software.

But suppose no heir can be found to exercise those rights. Then surely that software has been abandoned? And intellectual rights are surely the same here as physical rights? The same must apply to any rights holder, heir or not.

If something, say a 10 GBP note, is found apparently abandoned in the road then it is not legally considered abandoned unless time is allowed for someone to show a legitimate claim to it. The proposals here are rather more rigorous - apart from anything else an active search for the rights holder is proposed.

One thought is that someone like Owen's friend might volunteer (perhaps anonymously) to crack such abandoned software if required. Another thought is that such crackz be archived and only supplied if explicitly asked for. A third thought is that any such software be ditched.

Rolf, I know you would prefer the last option of those three but others mightn't. I honestly think that people should make up their own minds so here is my proposal.

Let's have an archive of any and all EPOC software legally available and let's have it mirrored. Let's also have a separate archive of these crackz for software that can't be registered (each crack only available on request) and where there has been six months of trying to reach the author/rights holder. On both sites (and their mirrors) let's post a feedback address for authors who resurface to make their wishes known and let's respect them. Let's encourage people to donate the equivalent of the registration fee to their favorite charity.

That way people who feel that cracking effectively abandoned software is moral can be served as well as others and posterity (whatever that means).

Above all, let's respect the wishes of as many as possible and try to avoid hurting anyone. My personal feelings toward M's**t are that it's behaviour is immoral in parts but that my response should be moral - two wrongs don't make a right - but that doesn't mean another person isn't entitled to disagree with my feelings. I could be wrong. So could anyone.

Cheers,

Phil.

Subject: Repeated message body with MochaPPP, RMRNews and Broadband

For over a year I have been using Pass-Thru, RMRNews and my home PC's BT dial-up to access the Psion newsgroups.  This combination has performed reliably if a little slowly.  Two months ago I upgraded to Broadband and set-up MochaPPP.  I can connect to a news server and download at an astonishing speed.  When I look at the newsgroups all the message headers have been downloaded.  The message body is another matter.  I get one or two messages that are repeated for all the message headers for that newsgroup.  I have been unable to determine a pattern, except that all newsgroups behave the same.

The only parameter that is configurable with MochaPPP is the connection speed to the PDA.  I have tried reducing the speed in tandem with the connection speed on the Psion to no effect.  The messages continue to repeat for that download session.

Is anyone familiar with this problem and how to correct it?  Maintaining my old BT dial-up just for access to newsgroups for remote reading seems excessive.

I am using a Psion 5mx and Windows 98(SE).

From: Owen H. Morgan

Subject: ReplyEveryMail

Hi

I feel I must come to the defence of Rolf Vonau's excellent REM application. Since the most important use of my EPOC devices is e-mail, REM is quite easily one of the four most important applications on my EPOC devices. The other three are Email (no point in REM without it), SaveMail by Sergio Alisi and Data (No point in SaveMail without Data).

Both REM and SaveMail were originally developed to fill the gaps where the onboard Email application has shortcomings and both applications have matured to the point where the EPOC Email application with the help of these two tools has become more versatile than any other e-mail application I know of regardless of platform.

Both SaveMail and REM are complex applications with many options that must be configured by the user before he or she can start using them and REM in particular can take some time and patience to set up. However, once everything is configured to the user's satisfaction, REM is practically transparent to the user.

Select the message you want to reply to whether it's a single e-mail or a message within a digest and REM automagically creates a reply with a greeting of your choice at the top, inserts quote characters (> ) in the original text and puts your signature and a random "thought for the day" at the bottom (if wanted).

I sometimes override the automagic thought for the day and select my own though because it happens that the one selected by REM may be rude in the context or I may have one in the back of my head which is more suitable. For example, in one of my last messages to the digest, REM selected "Never argue with an idiot, people might not know the difference." I thought it was quite appropriate, but decided to use something different as someone might have felt I was calling him an idiot...

If you routinely write e-mails in two different languages, REM will recognise e-mail addresses you have previously been in contact with and know which language to use for the greeting and signature.

The complexity in setting up REM for the first time isn't as much a shortcoming of Rolf's programming abilities as a result of the incredible versatility of the application. The programming task was made more difficult by the fact that different language models of the EPOC machines use different hotkeys to perform the same function in E-mail.

If Rolf Brunsting had taken the trouble to look through the menus in REM, he would soon have come across the Hotkeys item where he is asked to set up the keystrokes the e-mail application on his particular EPOC device uses to save an e-mail as draft, reply to sender and reply to all. They can all be found in the menus in his Email application.

Rolf Vonau is easily the most helpful software developer I have ever had the pleasure to work with. He often replies to my e-mails within hours and is quick to implement my suggestions even at times when I have thought to myself after e-mailing him that my request may have been a bit OTT. He even configured REM for me to work with the digests of three different discussion groups where I was quite possibly the only EPOC user.

The ability to reply automatically in two different languages depending on who the addressee is and the random thought for the day were both my suggestions as well as several other minor modifications. Rolf has also thoughtfully provided a small macro to insert a random thought for the day when your e-mail isn't a reply as well as an application to create a thought for the day library from your own data.

The only thing I don't understand about REM is why this fantastic application is Freeware. I'd gladly pay for it!

Re: Perl on EPOC

From what I gather, the main purpose of PerlStart is to allow you to execute a perl script by tapping on it's icon in the system screen - just like any document.

Provided you name your Perl scripts with a ".pl" extension, they are recognised by PerlStart & the system screen gives them the same icon as PerlStart (the Perl camel).  They can be placed in any folder you like.  They are effectively 'documents' of the PerlStart application.  The 'Start' & 'Command line' menu options within PerlStart allow you to start scripts in the more traditional way (like under UNIX) & to select the various options which are available.

Hope that helps

Kevin,

Can't help you with most of your list but the free MP3 player at: http://www.geocities.com/zavorine/epoc/index.htm

does make music on the netBook and the 5MX.  The speaker is so small that the sound is fairly "tinny" and I too would love to hear from someone who has installed an output jack using the speaker input to a small powered speaker. I don't think stereo would be supported. On the left side of the 7/netBook just below the hinge is a small square "punch out" which would be perfect for such a jack.  I am too much of a coward to try to pry open the case without instructions. Ruey Loon has pictures of the inside of the netBook at:

http://www.portal-pda.com/guides/netbook/insidenetbook.html

but he doesn't explain how to get there. If anyone has any suggestions please pass them along.

By the way, there is also an MPEG-1 video player using JAVA at:

http://rnvs.informatik.tu-chemnitz.de/~jan/MPEG/MPEG_Play.html

which was mentioned on this list some time ago that it could be adapted to work with JAVA on Psion machines. However, I am not knowlegeable enough to want to try it.

It is entirely sad to hear about the passing of the author of MBM View. I agree, and I am sure the whole list does too. The website of the author has been taken down.

I agree with Owen that we try to contact Lieuwe's family and offer to pay for licenses (we were going to pay for the licenses anyway). If he was the author and holder of the rights to the software, those rights would be held now by the family or Lieuwe's estate (if there is such a thing under Dutch law). I think that offering to buy licenses from the family would be a tribute to Lieuwe and a remarkable demonstration to his family of how much the Psion community respected him and his work. If the family is not willing to do so, then we shall decide on another course of action.

Howdy!

Just thought I'd let you guys know I've been had! Here in Dublin there are numerous street vendors selling what looks like dirt cheap Duracell penlights at 10 for 3 Euro, 20 for 5 Euro. The other day I bought 20 thinking I'd got a good deal. Not so! These batteries are absolute crap! I haven't done any scientific experiments, but my impression is that they don't even last a 10th of the time real Duracells do.

To my eternal embarrasment, it was not until I had gone through eight pairs that I had a proper look. They're not Duracells at all! The colour and design are the same both on the packaging and the cells themselves, the typeface is the same, but the name is "Powercell". One side says "Super Extra", the other says "Heavy Duty". I've been ripped off!

BTW, I never tried them in my MC218, but my experience from other equipment suggests that they'd last an hour or two at the most.

for those interested in the latest version:

Afer having had no reply to my email I just called.  The nice lady told me that there are definitely no .sys docs on the new CDs. I suggested that it might be a good idea for the small Psion community if they did make the available, installing over the parallel interface is a slow business anyway (and I suppose it takes a step more in programming to pack those things as .exe, so this might rather save costs).

She did not know if .sys-es can be extracted from .exe for use on the Psion. Well - CAN THEY? Does anyone know? I only have a Mac, SoftWIndows is rather slow and the idea is that this solution is *portable* - otherwise there is Route 66 for the Mac (also GPS-enabled).

best,

vlad

Subject: Confirmation of Lieuwe's Passing Away

I just wanted to let you know that the author of MBMView and other applications, Lieuwe de Vries, has indeed passed away and this was confirmed by a member of the scouting group that created the memorial site.

Subject: SPAM

Lately I started to delete the SPAM messages straight from the external mailbox and don't download them anymore (this is possible with a Psion). i noticed that since I started doing this the number of SPAM message has reduced significantly. I have no idea whether there is a link between the two, i.e. that SPAM senders somehow measure whether their messages are read or deleted, or that it is shear coincidence or a reuslt of other forces working against SPAM. Any ideas or info anyone ?

Best regards,

Itamar Engelsman
