If this is of any help to anyone:
I installed a German system on a 5 without problems - just stuck the 16MB original CF inbo it, apps installed - the 5 has less buttons, though. I didn't experiment long, but it seemed to work, so I'd suggest that you can install ANYthing on a 5mx-pro?

A couple of month ago I had my Psion 5mx repaired (screen cable defect) by the Psion representative in Singapore, as Psion is not represented in Indonsia (anymore) . The result so far is excellent. The repair was done quickly, although they informed me (When I already had send the machine) that no screen was available at that moment. I never tried the Psion Service in the Netherlands, only their helpdesk, on which I gave up after a couple of times due to their miserable service. It seemed to me that I was always connected to somebody in Bombay or Calcutta (no offence intended to India !)
Also some month ago I requested POS Ltd to do the same repair for my Psion 3a, as "Singapore" does not repair this model anymore. When I received the machine back, the screen was repaired and (although not requested) the keys were renewed.
Unfortunately the machine did not start on batteries anymore. POS Ltd asked me to send the machine back and the re-repaired it. I had to pay a considerable amount of money for the sending of my machine from Indonesia
to Great Britain, for the second time. Although POS Ltd agreed to refund my transport costs, until today I did not receive any refund.

Subject: 'E' drive usage, networking
Itamar,
>Re: ideas for the "E"drive ? - Sofar I did not read any other answers than using it for extra storage space. Is there anything else one can do with the E drive ?
I heve several PC cards that fit into the right netBook slot:
- Adaptors for CF card and SD/MMC. This is mainly for copying files. The netBook can handle the MMC from my Palm m130 and the CF cards from my Nikon digicam. Since I have a PC card
slot in my server and in my Thinkpad, I can easily copy files back and forth. I use one CF for (not very regular) backups of C.
- Voyager VGA (mainly for playing around). I had planned to use it for presentations via beamer
but Presentation Maker does not have a "presentation mode", so I'm still lacking some software
for my presentations.
- ELSA 56k modem (works perfectly).
- Psion Gold Card (Ethernet + Modem + ISDN). The ISDN part does not work (not enough power
to the slot?), the ethernet drivers and the modem definitely do work.
- Orinoco Wavelan II Gold. I can now surf the web from my living room! One problem with this
card is, that I can't get to the slot for the stylus while the card is plugged in :-(
I'm a geek and PC card collector and I try to make the cards work in different environments. The netBook is one of the simplest: Either it works from the beginning or not at all.
Regarding networking (Ethernet, WLAN): I'd like to have a small scale SMB server on my
netBook. Is anybody aware of an open source project which containes a mimimum SMB server?
As an alternative: an FTP server (not client!) on my netBook would help as well.

Subject: Psion mail folders
Hi all!
Some weeks ago Itamar posted a question concerning tidying up the Psion e-mail folder. I did not see any response on the digest and as I have the same problem, I take the liberty to repeat Itamars question.
The e-mail folder seems very complicated as all folders and files are numbers only. Most of the folders are empty or have only 1 file called UIDLS. Is it possible to delete these empty folders or is there any other way to do some cleaning up without erasing the folder structure and e-mails? All suggestions are welcome! The reason for asking is of course the very long time back-up takes when you have many folders and files (which I do).

Subject: Email problem solved; Nokia 7650 & 5mx
Hello again
It's some time since my last (rather negative!) posting - now feeling much better! Two good things to report:
a) for no apparent reason, my 5mx Email app is now working OK. After a couple of weeks or so, the problem I previously posted about (Digest #111 - message saying "overflow" just before all message headers had finished loading, and then freezing of the program) just went away. I still don't know what caused it (??ISP problem - Virgin [usually OK, but occasionally clunky]).
b) to celebrate a sort of promotion recently, I upgraded my Nokia 6210 to a 7650. The latter is a lovely piece of equipment and works very easily with the 5mx (using the same settings on the Psion for the 6210). Great toy! The WAP works well and I can also send emails direct from the 7650 if I want, though I don't much because then I can't archive messages with that great macro SaveMail (I archive all my messages in 20 different mailboxes on C drive for various home and work categories of message [total currently 1.7MB]; I then archive these each year on to my drive D CF card (increasing capacity to cope over the years, now at 256MB & half full, of which over 5MB is mailboxes).
This arrangement has proved the most flexible and reliable part of my e-communications over the past 5 years (alongside a work PC and home laptop each [or both] of which have caused problems from time to time). It still gives me a real buzz to write notes and email them out from the train before I get home on the journey back from meetings in London!
Two small annoyances:
- Phoneman Pro doesn't seem to work with the 7650 (5mx doesn't recognise the 7650 IR signal - I think a new standard) is there a way of getting round this? It would be good to be able to move pictures from the 7650 to the Psion on the hoof.
- having problems with my W2k laptop's IR port, so not yet able to get the phone to connect to that either! May have to get a Bluetooth card...
Sorry if a bit rambling.
Kit (enjoying my Psion again, & in better spirits!)

I tried it - a wrong folder name is the result.
However, the old Commander version does what I wanted. I tried to download your new version I get user error code 23 from my machine. Can you send it to me?

Greetings all!
I was playing with an old Nokia at home when I got an idea...
I hooked up my Siemens phone to my netBook and started it downloading email using GPRS.
Then I dialled it from the other phone...
Wouldn't you know, the Siemens rang?
When I accepted the call, it parked the data transmission and went to voice, and when the voice call ended(only a few seconds later) the data transfer continued...
I didn't try to see how the Psion handled a prolonged voice call, though.
(Probably bombs totally) but it seemed stable enough for the 10-15 seconds I kept the voice call open.
I guess 'always on' can also mean the owner is 'always reachable'.

Have fun, TRY!
Just remember that the OS is customised to fit the hardware...
(ARM 710 versus StrongARM SA1100.)
the screen size is also probably hardcoded into it.
Other than that?
I know that an US American netBook ROM works in a UK English one.
(The previous owner had installed it on my machine some time before he sold it to me)

A few days ago I was surfing www.psionwelt.de when I came upon a link to a german company.
not only are they selling the S5 cable (35Euro's), but they also sell one for the S5mx (40Euro)
If you want them to do it, it's 75 and 80euro's respectively.
And get this: they claim that they're selling a non-original cable WITHOUT the known flaws...
They also do Revo/Revo+ and S5mx upgrades and repairs the entire S3xx/Siena s5/mx and netBook range of computers.
I could try to locate the link if anyone wants it.

Can anyone, perhaps Itamar (given your experiences in setting up this Digest), give me advice as to why some ISPs do not handle BCC lines correctly?
So far Compuserve is the only one I have tried that does. Is there anything I can do to persuade O2 (for example) to do it properly or is it a deliberate strategy on the ISPs' part to deter junk mailers from using their servers?
I am involved in maillings for my sailing club and it is quite a nuisance to have to switch providers for this purpose.

Good point. Another thing worth mentioning is that if the camera has a zoom lens, you are likely to get barrel or pillow distortion at the ends of the zoom range, so keep the zoom setting near the middle of its range.
Barrel distortion means that all four sides of the motif of paper will appear to bulge outwards. Pillow distortion means that they'll bulge inwards. Some experiment may be necessary to find the point where your lens has the least distortion. It all depends whether all you need is to be able to read the documents on screen or you need to be able to print good quality copies. This as well as keeping your camera level in both planes is worth keeping in mind when photographing architecture to, but it's not always possible. That's why professional photographers use tilt and shift lenses or large format cameras for architecture.

(Both these points are UK specific, but there are analogues in
other jurisdictions)
Videotaping films (or any other material) from broadcast TV is
explicitly legal - as long as the material is not kept for more than
28 days. (the legislation is there to allow people to tape
Coronation St. one night and watch it a different, later night without becoming criminals).
Taping music is covered in two ways:
One: If you tape music that you own a copy of for your /own/
consumption, it is covered by the licence terms of the copy you
bought. (This pretty much fully covers making compilation tapes to
listen to in the car, for example).
Two: If you buy blank audio tape, whether to make private-and- personal-use-only compilations, to record elderly local people's
youthful experiences, your own band screeching and strumming
your own material in your garage, /or/ to distribute pirate copies of
that album you bought to all your friends you pay a surcharge
which is funnellled to the record companies and the likes of the
Performing Rights Society.
i.e. There are situations in which it is legal, and there are other situations in which it is illegal /and/ the copyright-holder still gets compensated.
So I don't think these is a good comparison for not paying licence
fees to Psion software publishers.
As I said before, my view is /if/ there is no way to funnel money to
the licensor, and that this is not just some momentary problemette (e.g. web-site off-line for a few days) /then/ I think the moral issue becomes easier. The legal issue doesn't really - except insofar as enforcement of the law becomes less likely when there is no
licensor sueing for payment.
I am saddened to hear of MBMView's author's death.
As an example of the issues, it seems to fall thiswise: his family
are now the copyright holders - free to continue to sell the software
as the author did, sell the rights to a caring home / the highest
bidder, or to declare it public domain / freeware / etc.
The mere fact that the author is no longer is no longer with us does
/not/ make MBMView 'fair game'. Only when the new rights
holders make some declaration will we know what's what.
Currently, we just have an example of a temporary problem with
making payment.

Subject: netWorked netBook - Finally
Hi All
Well the big day has at last come. I finally got my netBook to talk to my server. For those that are interested here is the setup: -
Server
Low spec Win2K (DHCP) server running WarFTPd (FTP Server) with a Netgear ME102 wireless access point.
Psion
Netbook running nFTP fitted with a Netgear MA401 wireless PC card.
I managed to Ping the server using FLFinger, so ran the FTP apps and eventually managed to connect. At the moment I can only manage to download files not upload and can't figure out why.
The greatest amount of help came from www.silvester.org.uk (The EPOC FAQish). Especially interesting is the WiFi compatibility list. It turned out that I was wasting my time with a Cisco 350 card, but the Netgear that I had laying around had the right FCC ID and could be installed. For those of you with 7's the list of compatible WiiFi cards tells you what you can use with a 7.
No joy with EPOCVNC so far but I live in hope of finding a gem somewhere on the net that tells me what I need to know.
If anyone needs any details on the netwroking just let me know.

Thanks Rick, it was indeed the Telewest Blueyonder news server that gave me the problem. I have found the Psion news groups too useful to drop, so I shall continue with using the UKOnline news server, which thus far has been fine. I have had no difficulty using UKOnline, but combine the legendary lightning fast speed that RMRNews exhibits with a GSM mobile connection, and I've had more fun watching paint dry.

The guy I spoke to also mentioned that POS should be able to do the same modification to enable a 5mx pro to run in other languages as well eg French etc. They are also offering the english 5mx pro for sale (www.posltd.com) at £260
