Subject: MP3 files from CD. (OT)

Hi all.

I'm putting this question to the list as I don't know any other bunch of people with as much computer knowledge in one place.

The CD collection on my boat is starting to take up way too much space so I'm considering converting it all to MP3 and either buying a stereo with an MP3 CD player or a solid state MP3 player like the iPod.

The big question is whether my elderly Toshiba Pentium 100 can create MP3 files. Could someone please advice (off list) on whether the computer is powerful enough and what software to get (preferably Freeware or reasonably priced Shareware). The original CD-rom for the Toshiba is long dead, so I'm using an external 24x iSpeed PCMCIA CD-rom.

I don't know the LG drive, but I have done something similar...

I rebuilt a 75MHz 486 (IBM 486BL3, that's clock tripled, and the reason Intel used the DX4 for their clock tripled processors)

48MB RAM and 2 HDD's. (170MB and 500MB)

It ran Win95... somewhat slowly, but my father who uses it isn't the fastest of users so it evens up.

We put in a Sony drive, and he now uses it to copy CD's and make music programs for a local radio station.

Things to watch out for is that the CD burner and the HDD's MUST be on separate IDE busses. (separate cables)

Vesa Local bus also helps immensely.

And keep the speed down. My father never burns at more than 2X, even if he can get it to do 4X (at least after I replaced the processor with a 133MHz chip :-)

If you can get a few RAM chips, possibly on eBay or QXL, it should be doable.

That was supposed to be PC-Four...

Too much work and too little sleep, probably...

About the recording of music from the radio and such...

(More on the ethics...)

In Norway the stations are required to keep lists of music played and send in to two agencies who's then supposed to pay out dividends from the cassette sales.

My father helps out in a local radio, and sometimes talks to the artists they play the music from...

Most of those artists are Country&Western, Christian or other 'nice' groups.

NONE of them has ever received as much as a dime...

Possibly some of the mainstream, or more famous pop and rock artists earn anything, but none of the smaller ones.

The best they can hope for is exposure...

(Rumour has it that the forms are just ignored centrally, and they pay out based on number of records sold.)

If you like their music, would you record their songs or buy the CD?

What is the advantage of the English S5mx PRO over a regular S5mx?

Are the applications updated?

(Maybe with Opera, nFTP or a few other bits)

As I understand it, the main selling point was the ability to update the ROM image, but it's highly unlikely that Psion will release a new image for it.

(I'd be delighted to be proven wrong )

Chris,

This might be a bit of a problem.  You will probably get a lot of buffer underruns resulting in "toasters" or bad burns.

As you know, the PC moves data/buffers data to RAM before writing on to the CD.  The writing is a very fast process and many times, either the hard drive where the original data is kept or the RAM cannot keep pace with the writer, which, then runs out of data to write onto the CD - hence the term buffer underrun.

Simple data (from Word, Excel and the like) might still be a possibility.  But images, video and the like that take up a lot of memory will definitely be a problem.  I once had a pentium 266 with 64mb and a 3.0 gb hard drive.  I lost about 50% of my CD's because of buffer underrun. And I was using a slow burner - a 4x-4x-16x yamaha.

Ian,

Why not just tidy your 2002 entries except your anniversaries to a new agenda file? This leaves your original file and preferences intact and you don't have to worry about transferring anniversaries. If, for some reason, you still want to copy the anniversaries to a new file, just tidy again to a new file but this time choose only anniversaries. You can then merge this anniversary file with your new agenda file.

Hi Kit,

I tested a Nokia 7650 with Psion a while back, and confirmed with Zenobyte at the time that the N7650 is not compatible with PhoneManPro because (and i quote): "It doesn't support the required InfraRed AT protocol, so we can't write a driver to make it work unfortunately".

I could also not get the N7650 software to work on Win2000 with IR eye, so for sending images (taken on N7650) and software (downloaded from Internet, uploaded to Psion, then beamed to N7650) & vice versa, i used plBeam (available from http://psion.psiloc.com) or Cbeam (same functionality but different GUI, for use with Cpen but works with N7650 also, available from http://www.cpen.com/).

Best wishes to all over the festive season,

Peace Epoc-geeks,

my name is Christoph Pulster, I have a small Psion shop-website at

www.pulster.de  (descriptions in German only so far, my excuse, but we

ship worldwide, just email) - Sorry if you feel offended, this shouldn't

be a spam. Psion retailers are hard to find nowadays, so I would like to

provide the URL. You do not have to look or buy :)

Besides "standards" like 5mx,revo,netbook,MC218 etc. we also offer rare

items like Org II, MC/HC-range and we have memory for ALL modells (CF, SSD, Datapaks, netbook 32 MB DIMM Upgrade etc.).

Thanks for reading. Heartly greetings from ugly South of Germany,

I can't see a way of doing exactly what you want, but it was only a few months ago that I discovered the inefficiency with Psion's Email app (on my S5C). I cleared up all the 100's of emails I had to an archive (using the excellent Savemail), and discovered with ALL my email folders empty that there were loads of stray files on the disk.

I simply deleted all the message folders (in System/Messages), and freed up up 3-4MB of disk space ! The email app simply recreates this folder (without the deadwood) when you next open it. Most of the folders are called Remote0X (where X is a number, relating to the particular mailbox), I guess with a bit of detective work you could work out which Remote folder relates to which mailbox and then delete the superflous ones. Alternatively, just delete all the remote ones (I think they only store the message headers for mails still on the server). However the local box is where most of the detritus seems to build up, in particular large attachements often get left behind - again a bit of detective work may help you to id the stray ones. The UIDLS files are presumably index files (called INDEX on my S5C) and I would think you only need to keep the LOCAL one of these, whilst you have emails stored on the system.

NOTE - I'm not an expert on this, these are only my observations. If you are going to mess about with the mail folder, I strongly you recommend that you BACKUP FIRST. I have found that renaming the message folder (eg Message2) works fine and email will create a new message folder. You can delete this and rename Message2 to Message and recover your emails, so I guess you could copy your message folder, play about with it and copy it back if you make a real mess of things. Finally, this info applies to the S5C, I can't comment on the differences with the S5MX or other Psions.

Sorry to ramble on, but hope it helps.

Regards,

Jason

For my birthday/Xmas I'm getting given a Siemens Pocket Reader (a pocket text scanner) from Map£30 - will also need a lead for direct connection to my 5m£15 from SerialLeads.co.uk.

I'm (almost) sure I'll find a huge amount of use for it...picking up little text clips from papers, magazines, and books browsed in shops ...

Any satisfied / dissatisfied users out there?

Re. MXpro # 126 - I am not so sure you can, as there are hardware differences between the 5MX series and the S7/netbook, amongst others differences in the keyboard, processor, two slots for disks, etc.

Re. Tomtom - The solution someone mentioned was to download the cities you want to keep on disk and than zip them up and store on the D disk.

Answer to: Jack & Huub

Re. Multiclip - Yes, I just had lost sight of it <G>. Adn Huub again reminded us all, but as I don't use his excellent program (already using Macro5, Assistant and Merlin) I'll use Multiclip instead. And I use both, Cocopapa I use for answering the digest, copying name and subject from the wordfile with the digest to the email to answer.  In this case the advantage is that it does not built a list to choose from as the order is always the same.

Answer to: Jan R Gustafsson

Re. Psion mail folders - Yes, there was an answer. You can use the program CleanIt  to remove empty folders from your disks. However, I went first over all the folders and checked the contents, as for one reason or another some attachments of old emails were still present while the emails were not and these I deleted by hand (as I never have that many emails stored in the program, it was not a problem to check).

Re. Translations - If you need it, I can translate it to Dutch.

Re. screen cable - Yes, pls let us know the website address. It sounds interesting specially as these things are always much more expensive in the UK than on the continent.

Answer to : Christopher Marwood

Re. BCC and ISPs - Yes, the problem is not the ISP, it apparently is a bug in the email program of the Psion as Mike McConnel wrote in digest no. 11 :

"The disclosure of BCC addresses is a bug in "EPOC Email Version 2.00" and I'm only surprised that the addresses haven't been visible in every case. When I've sent myself a BCC of a message from the 5mx to retrieve later with the PC, the BCC line with address is always visible."

It is possible to use it with some ISP's that apparently use older systems / equipment.

Answer to: Ian McGregor

Re. Anniversaries in Agenda - Your EPOC diary is not limited per year. If you want to create a new diary for 2003 the easiest way is to archive all your entries up to 31/12/2002 into a new file (Menu -> More -> Tidy/Archive). The anniversaries will automatically reappear in the new year, no need to enter them again.

Answer to: Colin Messer

Re. RMRNews & GPRS - I am afraid you will find that GPRS is not that much cheaper than GSM, specially if you have a contract with a certain number of minutes included in the contract.

Subject: XJMail for Psion

After several people mentioned the above app, I finally downloaded the program and tried it myself. Now, after a bit of testing, I thought I would put in a good word for XJMail here on the digest, and explain how it differs from Mail.

XJMail is not graphically oriented like the built-in Mail app, but it adds lots of new functionality:

1) automatic downloads and log-off (and deletions from server, if selected)

2) automatic signatures

3) scrolls effortlessly through mails by just tapping the space bar or the Enter key

4) move seamlessly from one mail to the next.

5) includes an 'SMTP auth' feature

6) mails are saved in simple txt format - great for archiving messages.

7) a "peek" function is available to view the first xxx lines of messages which are too large to be downloaded.

Problems:

- Cannot send texts with Latin (e.g., German/French) characters, although it is possible to view incoming mails which have these characters.

- No integration with Contacts: addresses have to be entered manually or copied from another app and then pasted into XJMail.

It takes a little getting used to, but I think I will probably use XJMail as my default mail program on the Psion from now on. Somehow it's just more comfortable to use for dealing with a large volume of emails.

The app can be downloaded at:

http://www.hi-ho.ne.jp/~ktkawabe/densha_e.html)

Best,

Peter
