Psion used the 5mx Pro models to test builds of the various language
OS before they were burnt into ROMs. The builds were address specific (as are all the rom images) and as far as I know, only the German OS images were ever released. I had that tip from Clive Evans some time ago, in a newsgroup exchange.

Hmm, doesn't ExAb have multiple clipboards.

the very long time back-up takes when you have many folders and files

How about moving the entire email structure to a CF before
your backup, and moving it back in place afterwards?

There was a new Patents Designs and Copyrights Act passed in the early nineties - the same act that allowed trademarking of things like sounds. (The Direct Line 'diddle-diddid-diddid-tid-deh' was the first to be trademarked).
I cannot remember what the specific changes to the law re. copyright of compiled computer code were but the act was in part passed specifically to address electronic publishing and computer programming.

Kevin,
IIRC, I bought it via mail order from Misco, Germany (www.misco.de). But I saw one in a shopping center, too.

Re. service from Psion UK - Just a pitty this good service comes too late .... . As to a second 5MX, eBay seems to be a good place, or go for the 5MXPro at Clove, more expensive but probably with better guarantees.
Answer : Jaan Sass
Re. Digihandler - If you could not make it work, why did you not ask the author for assistance ? It is Rolf Vonau who also wrote the program we use to run this digest from a Psion only. You can reach him
Answer : Will Green
Re. Palmtop magazine - The usefullness of this magazine to EPOC users has indeed become minimal, the main contents for EPOC users is now v.6 for the Nokia machines. But what can you say ? No magazine can continue to exist writing exclusively about a dead platform, they had to do something. We have now crystalled this digest to abt. 710 subscribers, but sooner or later this will go down again when more of us will be forced to look elsewhere. It is unavoidable I suppose.

Yes , they follow that old trick ( albeit not as egregious as some other
manufacturers/resellers ) ,selling the device cheaply ( i.e well below RRP
f.ex NetPad for GBP 869.50 incl VAT ) and rake in the profits on
accesories ,spares and repairs
Re Garmin GPS
On one of the palm BBS'es I read that Garmin will release a PalmOS 5-BASED
unit with a 480 by 320 display next year
This means you can have and run Routeplanner on the GPS itself !

Re : Successor of Communicator 92** series
There were rumors last November about a new Communicator product from
Nokia that should offer GPRS and Bluetooth on top of the already existing
functionality
Well is was just that : Rumours , the sad reality is that the successor
will be the 6800 series and that the functionality will in the future
reside on the network rather than in the device ( so the
operators/software vendors can charge monthly/per use charges )
The 9210/9290 will be the last Symbian device with a full keyboard , the
upcoming 3650 and Ericsson's P800 are the last devices capable of running
native Symbian applications , from there it will be J2ME and .Net that
will be the default interfaces
Expect a further dumbing down of the UI , with an on-screen keyboard and a
joystick and Yes/No keys as the only means for interaction
The only way we will see Bluetooth and/or GPRS on the Communicator is
through third-party expansion modules , much in the same way as GPS now

I'm the developer of the DigHandler. Please tell me, at which machine (and language) you tried to install the program and what error messages you got. The DigHandler works at many different English and German machines and I think together we can talk the program into working.

Subject: W2K & 5mx: IR update
Frustrating news this time!
Tried changing the BIOS settings (on laptop power up) to "slow IR connection". Good news - 7650 still speaks to the laptop; bad news - Psion doesn't (even thought the IR icon in the systray shows connection and the message "Symbian EPOC is in range" comes up if you hover the mouse over the sytray icon when the 5mx IR connection is on and adjacent.
Bother!
Still, look on the bright side: at least I don't have to keep swapping the BIOS settings and reboot depending on what Symbian device I'm trying to connect...
Season's greetings, &
Bye for now

Hi Guys,
All the best for the festive season and the New Year.
How about a New Year's resolution for the 600+ lurkers - at least six postings before next December. It doesn't have to be anything clever. Maybe how you use your EPOC machine (or how it uses you!). Or even just "Hi - I'm out there, this is where I live". Don't worry about somebody taking you to task, its mainly just in fun.
I think most of the regulars started out very tentatively and many of us are still learning about these wonderful machines. Help us.

Which version of Solun are you using, Will? I don't see Father Xmas anywhere on my 5mx - could you please tell me the time and Alt/Az settings he appeared at...?val at a camp site - the GPS would be in use while driving.
My program requires, as input, your Lat/Long and Magnetic Variation; plus the Longitude of Satellite.
I used an Isogonal map of Europe to input the Mag Var, but would have liked to have found a data set to incorporate in the program. My internet searches have not found such data. With the program handling Mag Var, folk like me (who are not yachtsmen) don't have to remember if to add or subtract it!
There will be a table of satellites in a later version selectable via <Tab> to give the Longitude of Satellites.
<<< Has anyone been able to access the GPS engine that comes with Palmtop/TomTom software? >>>
<< I would assume it simply outputs standard NMEA so any navigation software should be able to read it. Try connecting it and opening Comms at 4800 baud 81N with either no handshaking or only Xon Xoff. You should see the NMEA messages scrolling across the screen. >>
A misunderstanding Owen. I was refering to the 'Positioning System' used by Palmtop RP & SP. In the older versions of these apps, one had to switch off the GPS (serial port access) in one before changing to the other and then switching on the GPS, as only one app can use the 'Remote link'.
The later versions can both access the NMEA data from the GPS without the switching off and on problem. I would expect that their GPS Engine (which uses the Psion's serial port as input) puts the NMEA data at specific memory addresses while running in the backbground. Both apps then read the memory addresses when in the foreground.
Does anyone know what is actually happening here?
If we knew this then a 'SatFinder' app could use this as input, without having to switch off Palmtop's use of the serial port, before accessing the serial port.
<< I've never understood the idea of paying more money for a dedicated GPS when a normal handheld is cheaper, will do everthing the dedicated one does and can also be used on its own with internal batteries or external power. I'd never buy a fixed mount GPS for the boat either. If I loose all electric power at sea (which has happened to me on two occasions), my handheld Garmin 48 simply switches from external power to its internal batteries and keeps going. >>
Agreed, just like my old Garmin 75 and newer eMap.
