Subject: Dana

I've been reading up on the Dana, thinking it might be a good way to check out the Palm OS against my needs.

With the move to Port Townsend Washington, I've cut a deal with my printer.  I send my pages down to him via email and he inputs them into Publisher to build my magazine.  This frees me from Publisher and this frees me from a Windows machine.  So was thinking now's the time to move up to a Netbook.

Then a slight rap against my 5mx and poof, I'm back to a classic 5 and my two Makos, both suffering minor battery problems.

With no Windows machine I've been backing up to he flash card in the 5mx which I moved to the classic.

I said or sometghing like that as I lost about three days work since last backup.

Time to send the 5mx in but thought maybe now's the time to consider a Dana - Treo combo - much cheaper than a NetBook and the 5mx that has been going sour about once a year.  With the date December 31st, 2004 (end of Psion support) slowly sneaking up on us, maybe it's time for me to test out other waters.

I was interested in the Sharp Zaurus as it's unix.  Then I hear that they are going to do a clamshell and I got more enthused, then heard (here) that with the new clamshell coming out at $700, it's going to be another pocket PC

intead of Unix.

Palms been around a while so will see if I can adapt.  Not throwing out any Psion stuff yet, as I may come running back.  Will report here how the Dana stacks up to my simple needs (email, word processing, data, spreadsheet, agenda, and a an email book reader).  Will have to keep the Psions to maintain my web site - don't think there's a Palm OS FTP program yet, and the Psion works a treat there.

My Mako has been sitting in a drawer for 2 months. Today I got it working again and loaded a few apps onto it. After reading the above, I looked at everything in my OPX folder. They all have todays date. Somehow or other I thought files would have the date of creation or modification, but apparently not.

So this brings up a problem in my mind. Even though files may have the same name, are there older and newer versions? Let's say I have an app on my machine which had an opx file created 1 years ago, and I install another app today which has the same opx file name but was an older version created 2 years ago, will the older version overwrite the newer version? If so, I guess it would then show today's date. I'm confused. How do I insure that I have the latest version to backup?

Or am I just whistling Dixie?

Philip,

If you are using a new Netgear wireless card MA401, it is *not* supported by the netBook OS.

The card has a predecessor with the same name but a different chipset that is reported to be accepted by the netBook (but without encryption!). Recent Netgear cards can't be used!

If you can live with the fact that the stylus hole is blocked by the card, get an Orinoco Wavelan II Gold. The card supports 128bit WEP, is supported by the netBook (even by the NetStatRF app)

and works well with the Netgear MR314 wireless router. (This is exactly my setup!)

Hi all

Jack asked how I knew that it was the vnchosts.txt file that was causing my

problems trying to get my netBook connected to connect to my wireless

network. I have to admit that it was guesswork with just a little logic

applied. It took me months of inactivity to get this far though - along with

a suggestion from someone on the www.pdastreet.com forum. Although their

answer didn't solve the problem, it pointed me in the right direction.

Philip Crookes bemoaned his wire free networking problems. Are you talking

OK to the network? What sort of setup (server) have you got? Its not just

something as simple as a gateway IP missing somewhere is it? I haven't got

my netBook to look at at the moment so I can't look up the settings that you

are using.

I am seriously considering using ABP this year. The only thing that stops me

at the moment is my attachment to the default transactions in RMRBank. These

allow you to set up common transactions that you can use at will. For

instance I have one called Delta. It is set up so that each time I use my

Delta card I can go to this default transaction, which automatically dates

the transaction. All I need to do is put the amount and payee in. It already

knows that it is a debit transaction. I have many more of these set up for

salary (its different every month, cheque out (with a cheque number

counter), cash in, cash out, expenses, etc etc etc. Is this sort of

functionality available in ABP - Is this what the category function does?

OPXScan - Beware - When I used the app it deleted at least one vital OPX

file. I now back up my OPX files in case this happened again or some

software overwrote a late version with an earlier one.

After saying that the 256mb CF had probably bottomed out at £60, it went

down by £2.50 the following day :-) Expansys is the place to go as far as I

am concerned. They do a really good job. Only cocked up once, which is good

by today's standards and I have had a fair amount of stuff from them. By the

way it was 60 ukp plus vat and postage. 512mb are 120ukp plus VAT Owen.

Data doesn't work on Pay as you Go Orange mobiles, hence why I changed to

T-Mobile (plus a total lack of Orange signal where I now live of course!).

I have the Netgear card in my Netbook along with Orinoco RG-1000 Base Station

& a number of other networked PCs.

I can connect to the Internet via modem in base station, which automatically

makes the connection when it receives a request for a URL not on the rLAN.

Suggest you check to ensure that your base station will allow automatic

connection to the Internet.

Subject: OPL source code from a .OPO file?

Hi.

I have just received a copy of a small OPL application (1kb) and would like to find out how it works. Unfortunately, I only have the .OPO file, not the OPL source code. I beleive there is a way of getting the source code if one has the .OPO. Anyone care to enlighten me?

And before you ask, no, it's not a Shareware or commercial application and I don't intend to steal anything.

I have also come across OPA and OBD files for an S3 program which I would like to see the source code for if possible. I don't have an S3, but would like to try to write something similar for EPOC.

Answer to : ramez

Re. Lines on the screen - I think the process is soft reset, hard reset and if that does not help you will need a hardware repair.

Answer : Keith

Re. Serial no. - You are right, I mixed up the two.

Answer : vlad

Re. codriver - Interesting you mention this program. Did anyone succeed working with it ?  I tried it out a couple of times, but specially in town it goes totally "beserk" the moment you drive the wrong way.

Answer : Kevin Thorne

Re. S7 battery performance - I don't keep as exact a record as you do, but in almost half a year of using my S7 I never got the full 6 hours of usage. However, I use my S7 for all my personal emailing, connecting 4 to 5 times a day to the internet, and I understand using the serial connection and/or the IR port will use more battery power. Of course using the Dacom modem takes even more power, and I also notice on Chadisk7 that the blue line that usually curves down gradually looks differently when using the Dacom modem (it moves more up and down).

Andy,

I have been using a 256MB Viking Card for a year and a half; first in a 5mx and now a netBook.

There have been no problems.

I'm on ED50 and had understood that data was not available on PAYG.  But I recently saw a post that although their shops said no, an e-mail to Orange got a positive reply.

Probably the usual problem. You'll have to ask half a dozen (or more) folk before you find one that knows and can therefore say yes.

Have you had a look at ABP5?  I use it on my 7, 5mx & Revo +.

<<< Things just became a bit more complicated because I now have a companion savings account with a higher interest rate, and can transfer back and forth from there to the checking account >>

With ABP5, this is just a single entry as the other account's entry is done automatically.

<< When the statement comes in, I go to the check number and do Ctr-X, x, Ctr-v, Down arrow, which puts an "x" in front of a check that has been cleared and shows up on the statement.  Non-check items just get an "x".  That makes reconciling the statement extremely easy, because I can instantly spot the entries that have not cleared and add or subtract them from the statement balance. >>

Just cursor down/up and press 'r' to reconcile and it shows in a different colour on a 7.  Very easy and with certain banks use their statement files to do it automatically, but I don't use this.

<< Finally, I have a standard Sheet template for travel expenses, which I fill out while traveling and then can simply print out when I get back and hand to my secretary. >>

I have another account for expenses and when it gets paid direct to my bank by BACS, I do a single transaction that as above puts an entry into both accounts.  Same with all our credit cards.

Before having an EPOC Psion, I used Supercalc 4 on DOS PCs and Visicalc on CBM PETs before that, to keep track of spending.  Both spreadsheets, but ABP5 is quicker.
