Subject: OPL Question

Reply to Owen

" I'm working on a macro and need to put around 50 string constants into an array. In Basic (in the bad old days), I would have used a "DATA" sentence to hold the data like this.

Data "Hello","this","is","the","data"

Followed by a loop with READ a$(i)

How do I do this in OPL? "

In OPL a string array is declared like this:

LOCAL a$(5,10)

This would declare an array of 5 strings, each up to 10 characters in length.

You can then fill the array:

a$(1)="Hello" :a$(2)="this"  :a$(3)="is" :a$(4)="the" :a$(5)="data"

Re. SendKey:("Menu,2,1") - Do I understand correcytly that this command will move the cursor to the Menu line, second choice form the left, first choice down ? Will it activate that line or do you have to add an "enter" ?

Answer to: Rolf Brunsting

Re. Psion Dacom Gold Card Global V.34 + Fax - If that is the case, what could cause my card to misbehave ? It definitely stops the moment I take the card out. Otherwise the card functions perfectly. I'll try the soft reset later (stuck in a plane on the ground with a hydraulic problem).

To All :

Re. Sony sub-notebook - Tonight I saw at Heathrow airport the Sony C1-MHP sub-notebook. I was mighty impressed but for the price (Gbp 1,660.-). It is actually smaller than the S7, a good colour screen, keyboard very similar to the S5 series and S7/netBook, but with full PC functions. It even has a camera on the top of the screen that will showed the people standing in front if it, actually moving images on the screen. "If I were a rich man" (song from Fiddler on the roof musical) I wuold have bought it on the spot.

Answer : Derek Clark

Re. Series7/Netbook - I think the larger screen is an advantage (specially for older people). The keyboard is of course larger as well, 10 finger typing is very easy. It is a lot sturdier and stronger than the series 5, no dreaded screen cable problem either. It has two disk ports for a CF and for example modem card (which I bought recently) or another storage disk. The netBook can also connet to networks with a network card. You have however a lithium iron battery which give you about 6 hours of use until you need an electricity output. I bought a second battery to double that time (might need it tonight being stuk in a plane at Heathrow and the adaptor in my suitcase ... !).

Answer to : Sergio Alisi

Re. Macro menu - Instead of "Fn+left arrow (Home) followed by a Fn+up arrow (PgUp)" just a Ctrl+Fn+Left will do the same.

Answer : John George

Re. Dana information - Thanks for the link to Palmtop magazine, it is lying in my officed I still did not have the chance to look at it properly.

Answer to: Andy Hayes

Re. Start Folder - The EPOC system indeed does not have such a function. However, good news, in MACRO5 you can define in Menu -> Tools -> Advanced a macro at switch on, which allows you to start a back-up macro each time you switch on our Psion or once a day, I suppose the first time you switch it on. I never used it, so can't help you much further, just try it out.

Answer to: chris cooper

Re. 'Not found' message - I am not sure, but it sounds like it is missing either a file or a program. You could try to see whether any of the programs do not work. Otherwise, I don't really know and sorry if I gave you wrong information. Just did not want to leave you without any answer.

Answer to: Colin Messer

Re. GPRS 6510 - A word of caution. I don't know which network you use and what terms you have got, but specially when surfing the net the costs of GPRS can be considerable ! It is definitely NOT a cheap option. Look at your phone in Menu -> Call Register -> GPRS Data Counter to see how much Kb you sent and received to calculate the cost.

"2" puts the cursor in the second menu from left

"1" puts it in the first menu and fold it down.

After that you have to send "Down,Down,Down,Enter", if you want to execute the fourth line of the first popup menu.

Steve Hodgson asked about PsiJong with PsiLoc+ installed also. I had the same experience when looking at PsiJong (I did not guess that it was due to PsiLoc) but then found that double tapping 'menu' would open the menu and the game would play as usual. Hope this works for you also.

Subject: Psions and GSM networks

I see that T-mobile is advertising an "all-GSM" network in NYC. Has anyone had experience with GSM in NYC, or the US for that matter? Also, I'd welcome any information about which of the new cell phones work well with GSM and Psions, particularly the Revo or Mako. Sorry if this comes across as provincial, and thanks for any help.

Subject: Psijong, netBook power connector...

Greetings!

PsiJong...

I played that game a lot on my old S5, but then I switched to the netBook...

Ben has made a separate colour version for the S7/netBook, and unfortunately, the old reg-code won't work with this one.

You have to register again for this version.

(If you just wanted to run the old version, he'll probably send you a new code matching the new machine's UID, though)

--

Now for something more serious...

Today I finally decided to do something about the ailing power connection on my netBook...

I dismantled the machine(the warranty was already void, so...)

Cleaned out the crud...

(You wouldn't believe how much crud it collects in a few years :-)

Then removed the motherboard and turned it over...

If I ever find the Psion 'Engineer' that designed that part of the PCB I'll slap him silly!

The connector was only held in place with three WEAK solder points and a few globs of glue. (That melting glue you get in sticks)

I had to scrape off the glue and desolder the two still good solder points, then meticulously remove any trace of the glue. (A messy job)

Then I resoldered the points, using a little bit more solder than the Psion cheapskates and applied a liberal dose of glue.

(All along the sides of the connector.)

I'm still not satisfied, though, so I'm planning to drill two small holes and use fishing line or something to secure the connector.

Even that won't be as solid as it SHOULD have been, though.

(It should have been fastened with screws or through-hole solder points)

There's enough room on that part of the PCB for them to do it properly...

I'll probably post an howto on my pages when I do.

(Need to locate my digital camera and buy a new drill bit for my Dremel first)

:-)

Subject: Re: Most used sw - RMRTask

Itamar wrote:

<Thanks for your description of RMRTask. Could you give us some examples of how exactly you use it ?>

One special way to use RMRTask that I have found suits me, is to keep meeting notes of all types - from simple memory jottings to more formal memorandums. For this I use two Task groups - one for job meetings and one for private meetings (PTA, basket club etc..), I designed each of the Task groups the same way, As 'task' I enter the venue / main  purpose of the meeting and I use due date as the meeting date.

The actual notes from the meeting I enter in the extended note window' that RMRTask gives as an option to attach to each note (can be up to 1000 characters) or - if it is an extensive note - in a Psion Word file (templates can be used) that I link to the 'task' / meeting note by use of the RMRTask link option. I can also enter the meeting venue into Psion Agenda from within RMRTask (this Agenda entry can be automatically 'marked' as an RMRTask entry) and this way get a direct link between Agenda and RMRTask. You can also link Sheet & Data files to a 'task' / meeting note.

However, IMO the most valuable option is the possibility to categorise the 'task' / meeting note according to two categories of your choice and the sort and filter options that go along with this (sorting & filtering can of course also be done by date or venue / description). I named my categories 'Object' & 'Action', where 'Object' is for instance a job type like 'Programming', 'Railway statistics', ICT, a working group or committee, and 'Action' tells me what to do with the note - if it should be distributed, just read, commented on in some way or if it is just done with and sits there for archive reasons (RMRTask has a built-in backup option). In spite of the large number of notes kept, it's very easy to find notes / objects and necessary action and search by text is also possible.

Of course you can set an alarm to a 'task' / meeting note if you want to carry out an action at a certain time or just remember to read through the note. The sw can be set up to tailor your special needs / mode of use in a multitude of ways - this is the main reason I choose to use it as my 'meeting notes depository'.

I'll be happy to answer follow-up questions off-digest.

Subject: Gold Card Modem, US Mains Adapter, Apps, Solitaire & Sanity

Dear Psionmates,

I've been looking for an older model Gold Card modem without ethernet; something my earlier build S7 can support.  I'd like to have one or more extra in reserve.  I do a fair amount of web browsing and the Travel Modem goes through far more batteries than I'm comfortable with.  Plus I enjoy using my S7 late at night when insomnia rears its ugly head and having to keep the travel modem properly aligned and on a flat surface is a deterrent to latenight work.  I found a US liquidator claiming to have the older ones, and ordered two but haven't heard from them in two months.  So does anyone know where i can find a basic Gold Card fax-modem/cable  without the bells and whistles?

I'm also looking for extra US mains adopters for the S7.  My old one no longer works and googling netted only UK versions.  I've ordered one from Expansys

and have purchased a UK to US plug adopter but am hoping to get ahold of the proper item as well.  Also in the market for a second S7, although I may end

up buying a netbook instead.

Application Uses:  Thank you many times over for this idea.  As one who uses her S7 and 5mx as stand-alone computers, reading how people make use of available software apps is a boon and one of the reasons I appreciate our Digest.  I suppose eventually those of us in the US will have need for the information on phone connectability when GMS becomes more available and cost effective, but for the time being it's information on software and troubleshooting that has me looking forward to each Digest.

I'm in the last week of my annual visit to Sikkim and Nepal and since the S7 mains died (and eventually the battery) before the trip , I brought the 5mx instead.  Everyone - Nepalis, Indians and expats of all flavors - who sees it in action wants one.  I've been using it for keeping track of orders in

several configurations of Data, emailing, keeping abreast of my online banking via Opera (which allowed me to discover I'd been charged twice for a sizeable order just one day after the fact),  agenda and jotters for several

categories.  I only wish I'd brought along a 128mb cf card instead of the 32mb.

Coming down from Sikkim RMR solitaire kept me distracted while waiting for the right moment to make a run through freshly-gained Maoist territory in order to get to the nearby airstrip and catch my flight to Kathmandu.  Considering they'd blown up a bridge with a crowded bus on it only 2 hours prior to my arrival (later I found out 14 had died and 67 were seriously injured) the police, whom I'd been advised at the border would provide me with an armed escort upon request, were nowhere to be found.  The Maobaddis had also disappeared, my taxi driver and I decided we'd had enough of waiting and solitaire, burned rubber on the unpaved road to get to the airstrip.  BTW, we found the police, they'd barricaded themselves inside the only gas station still open and I can't say I blamed them when even a lowly civilian tea server working in a police station is hunted down and killed.  Anyway we got our gas and obviously I got out of there safely.

with belated wishes for a peaceful New Year,
