The problem is that the Mac now only has a USB interface while the Psion dock has a serial plug. I have the Keyspan adaptor which I use with Trafic but sometimes getting Trafic to work is not easy.

There are card readers galore for the mac, but there is no card in the Revo.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions for note taking solutions (especially Kate and Jan).

I will try to make Jotter work for me. Using Merlin I have set up a toolbar that will add keywords (to enable structured searches). The reason for me was the ease of entry, rich text and enabling embedded objects (especially important to use with Symlink).

I find I underutilise the built-in apps, and as Michael noted, a fresh look can be rewarding.

Kit,

<<Sorry , no elist ( yet ) but there is a great Webboard at :

http://www1.alphasmart.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?category=3

Give it a shot !>>

I found this one early on.  It's primarily postings by educators and AlphaSmart but promises to be a great board.  Had a woman  thrashing the Dana and she was met with intelligent response from AlphSmart and some solid technical advice.  Am checking in several times a week.

<My verdict :

The keyboard is superb>>

I couldn't have said it better.  After playing wih the Dana for over a week and nursing my sick Mako along w/scewed up battery (gumble grumble grumble) my plan is to stick with the Dana for serious portable word processing and the Psions for everything else.  The address book on the Palm OS is good but no match for Epocs Data + Contacts.  The datebook is a joke by comparison to Agenda but usuable if all my Psions went bad & there was no one repairing Psions..

<<The screen is a revelation , especially for older eyes , but requires decent lighting >>

When the lighting gets bad, turning on the superb backlight cures the problem.

It uses battery, but so what? Excellent interal rechargable battery, replacable AA's when a long time from mains, works on wall wart without worry of battery screw-up.  They have a bug in the battery software (nothing like

the Revo/Mako bug) and already have a free download on the AlphaSmart web site (technical support promises to be both superb and responsive).

My plan to move from Psion to a Treo for a pocket machine has been transformed into a plan to solve file transfer issues - moving poetry from Dana to Psion and visa versa.  There's no way I want to be in a Palm only environment before the Gods of breaking machines deem it time for me to move on.  By then my experience with the Dana will allow an easy move from Epoc to Palm.  May that day be 31 years hence (on my 100th birthday)

As soon as my 5mx is returned, both Mako's get a trip to England for battery upgrades.

<<There are some freeware Telnet/terminal programs for it . so you could access sailor.lib.md.us on it let us know>>

Say what? <g>  I remember something about that with the C$erve Zaurus forum, if I remember correctly.

(Pardon spelling errors - having all sorts of problems involving moving files back & forth between 5mx flash card, 5 classic and Mako's have left me with no web and no spell check on the Mako with the battey problem.  The Classic has

no email or web.  Very happy when my desktops arrive with household stuff (a month away).so I can download some software.

Marcus,

I used it successfully to copy some Jotter pages as memos to my Palm.>>

This sounds very interesting.  Does psiBeam (I assume piBeam is a typo) solve IR incompatibility between Palm OS and Epoc OS?  What function does Symbian Editor play in this?  If I put a Word doc in the current window, will the macro mark it and allow psiBeam to send it, assumably as a text

file?

Macro5 possibly...

It's used for just about everything else...

If you have the data to be inserted in a database you just create a document where you mark the places to insert text with an easily recognisable string (like %%1 or something else that's unlikely to appear in the normal text.)

Then record a macro that selects and copies the text in the first field of the data file, switches to the document, does a search and replace for the text, using the information on the clipboard as 'replace with' before switching back to the data file. Copy the next field and so on...

When the document is finished, use the 'save as' dialog to give it a unique name based on the record number, before reloading the original document, switching back to the data file and selecting the next record.

Alternatively, you could print it and 'revert to saved' instead of saving it...

> Also interested if there is anything enabling direct printing from the

> psion onto labels.

Are you talking about sheets of labels in an ordinary printer or of those 'label-printers'?

The label printers _should_ work with the 'general' printer driver...

The sheets on the other hand...

You're probably best off writing a simple OPL program to extract the data from an Data file and printing it. (Messy but doable)

Rolf,

<<That's easy, it only requires strict discipline. a) Synchronise your 'active duty' Revo with you spare Revo each day. Malcolm Bryant's EPOCSync tool (freeware).will be ideal as it allows you to synchronise via the Revos' infrared ports.>>

I have the same problem with EPOCSynch that I have with PsiWin.

Because of the way my creative process works, I am constantly renaming and moving files. I found early on that a conventional backup with PsiWin backed up the files fine but the deleted files were not deleted in the backup and the moved files now existed in two places when I would do a restore.  I menioned this either here or (more likely) on the C$erve forum and had someone solomnly tell me that this is not so, that deletions we deleted and moved files only ended up were they were put with the prior location deleted.

I have the same problem with EPOCSynch, so have stopped using it.

I kill the backup file on PsiWin (actually, I move it out of the folder) forcing a full backup each time.  This costs me 30 minutes each time but I don't load up my machine with deleted files.

Am I missing something?  Perhaps an option I haven't found in my

software?

EPOCSynch has a great repution (deserved) so I think my use of a Psion is a bit unique.

Leonel,

Yes, there is a patch that fixes this problem. Go to www.psion.com and download the contacts patch for the Revo. You'll need to register your machine if you haven't yet done so.

http://www.memoware.com/- the allinclusive ebook source and first place to search. Almost al ebooks in all formats in all languages. Mostly free.

I favour the Tomeraider format: it is fast, simple, small databases.

Freeware-books:

http://biblio5.thiriet.net/main.shtml

http://www.tomeraider.com/links.htm

http://www.epocbooks.com

http://www.smolak-peter.com/NTR.htm#Sprachen (mostly in German, some are "donateware"

http://www.promo.net/pg/ (this is Project Gutemberg - a very interesting place in many ways!, if this address is wrong, try projectgutemberg.org or do a search)

QUESTION:

any source for a USB-to-rs232 cable which does not cost a small fortune?

Hi Owen,

Windows 98 uses the FAT32 filling system. Windows XP usually uses the NTFS filling system, but can also use FAT32.

Just for fun:

Who uses PhoneMan with which phone?

Afaic:

per rs-cable w. a Bosch 909 (sms, phonebook backup),

per ir w. several Nokias (dito, icons, tunes)

per ir w. Siemens s35i (dito, but didn't find out how to add tunes) (my actual phone & don't need more. I do not like the soap-design,

though...)

Even easier, just use the "Save As" option on the file menu.

Subject: Re; entry limit in Jotter

Hi there,

Thanks to Peter Keene and Michael Degn for the extra input about Jotter entry size limit - I managed to get up to 1,087 words and a Sketch object in one of my Jotter entries (checked by copying and pasting into a word file to get the number of words).  It was more than that originally, but I got an error message saying limit reached, so cut and pasted several lines into a new entry.

All the best,

      Kate!!
