Reply to Itamar Englesman:
<My S7 is also my communications machine when traveling, receiving all faxes and emails from work and sending both faxes and emails.>
Before you had your Gold Card modem did you use your IR Travel Modem for sending and receiving faxes? If so, were there any problems setting it up? Is the Gold Card trouble free for faxes?
Reply to Darryl Kempster:
<Anyone using a Psion / Nokia 9210 combo? How easy is it to swap info without a PC?>
Yes, I currently use my 9210 as a replacement for my 5mx and my S7 as my primary machine. I'm hoping to get an MMC to PC card adaptor - this will then allow me to easily transfer large amounts of data between the two, using the S7 "E" drive. This is absolutely fine for simply backing up the 9210's data to the S7's 1 Gb Microdrive and standard file types (such as html pages, jpgs etc) can also be read by either machine. Of course, ER5 and ER6 are incompatible when it comes to standard apps such as Email, Calendar etc (although individual Agenda and Contact entries can be beamed over one at a time but not whole files). Stuff like Sheet or Word cannot be read in their standard form but can be converted by nConvert on the S7 to Excel or RTF which the 9210 can read with its built-in converters. Data from the ER5 Data app can be exported to a CSV file then that can be imported to PowerData on the 9210. So the combination of using an ER5 machine with an ER6 one does work up to a point but it's not the 100% compatible delight that it would be say using a Revo or 5mx for portability and a S7 for home use - the combination I used before my faithful 5mx went to Psion heaven (RIP).
Reply to Randall McLaughlin:
When my backlight went out <on my spare P5 (and the other p5 had already died) - I decided to upgrade to a 9290 (I'm in the usa). Well, I'm on my fourth unit since July of 2002. Because of the extreme problems (and grief ) I have had with the Communicator I would say my ratio is 35% PC and 65% using the 9290. I am still having trouble with a few things - so I should send it back again. If anyone knows alot about this unit please email me. I would like to outline my problems with the 9290 and get some advice. Likewise if anyone has questions about the Communicator I would be happy to answer. It is a great machine ! >
Sorry to hear about your problems. Please do outline your problems on the digest - I'm sure either myself or other 9210/9290 owning digestees will try our very best to help :-)

Tom Robertson asked:
<<Does anyone know of any software for the psion which will perform an action similar to that done by the mail merge function in ms word? Also interested if there is anything enabling direct printing from the psion onto labels.>>
PowerBase, the database application by Purple Software, allows you to create so called "Page View": you can customise a page layout to considerable extend, insert fragments of text, as well as the content of selected fields from a chosen table of your database. See Part 7 - "Views" - of the PowerBase Tutorial by Laurie Jane Kern for more details [please, visit http://web.archive.org/collections/web.html then search for URL http://www.foxpop.ndirect.co.uk/powerbase/tutorial7.htm or, alternatively, for http://www.armlink.ndirect.co.uk/pbtut/index.htm]
I am not sure, however, what exactly ms word is doing - or what level of sophistication do you expect to get from your mail merging app. In any case, it takes some time to learn how to make a good use of PowerBase -- and please, be prepared for it.
It seems, that with the same utility you can also print the names and addresses from your database directly onto envelops (but not on labels, I'm afraid). The application manual, as well as the 30-days trial version of PowerBase have been available for download from http://www.purplesoft.com/
Hoping this might be of some help

On Sun, 26 Jan 2003 23:58:06 +0100, Epoc Digest wrote:
>This sounds very interesting. Does psiBeam (I assume piBeam is a typo) solve IR incompatibility between Palm OS and Epoc OS?
It's known as plBeam (pl stands for PsiLoc, the comany's former name). And yes, it's a full IrOBEX implementation for file transfer. It even replaces the Irda filetransfer functions in the system screen. The macro uses it as the sender application. CBeam (freeware) should work in a similar way but the macro has to be modified for this.
>What function does Symbian Editor play in this? If I put a Word doc in the current window, will the macro mark it and allow psiBeam to send it, assumably as a text file?
That is what it was made for. I use the Editor in the macro to handle an intermediate text file that is created and beamed throughout the process. You can probably change the macro to use Word
instead but Editor was simpler for me.

Subject: Note Taking
Answer to Itamar Engelsman
> Note taking - You just gave me an idea. We have each year an exhibition in Cologne in March where I need to make notes about each visit of (potential) clients. Instead of just in WORD I could do it in a jotter file with an entry for each client. Is there a maximum no. of letters per entry in jotter ? If so, I can put the discussions in an attached word file. <
Itamar, this sounds like a ideal job for the Data application. Try creating a new data file with field labels to suit your exact requirements at the exhibition: name of contact, address, phone/fax/e-mail, then a Note field that has unlimited space for your discussion notes. If you have several products on offer, you could have a field label for each with a Yes/no format, to show if the contact is interested or not. If you use this for every contact, at the end of the exhibition you have a searchable database! Daniele Squarci

Answer to: Andrew Morphett
Re.: Note taking - You wrote "I find I underutilise the built-in apps, and as Michael noted, a fresh look can be rewarding". I think most of us do. I never use Sketch or Record for example. I hardly ever embed an object in any file. That's why I asked people to describe how they use application, as surely we all found a (slightly) different way to use programs.
Answer to: Jim Watson~Goive
Re.: EPOCSynch - I am not sure this will help you, but let's try. Psiwin is a general back-up program and will back-up a complete disk. EPOCSynch allows you to synchronise to EPOC machines with more flexibillity according to personal needs. You will have to plan your files accordingly and set the program to do what you want it to do. For example, if you have certain files you want synchronised between the two and others not, put each type in a different folder and sync only one folder and not the other. You can also set the program to either overwrite the old file or create a back-up file of the old file somewhere else on the Psions, which you can check after syncing whether you need these or not.

Re.: 32mb ram dimm - I can't prove it as I don't have it with me, but I think (sorry if I am wrong) it is described in your instruction book. Basically it boils down to a hard reset by taking out all batteries, open the compartment underneath the screen on top of the keyboard and clicking the dimm in place. Make sure to back up first !!

Subject: Mako won't turn on
My husband's Mako appears to have died. When I perform a hard reset, the Mako logo appears momentarily and then disappears. The appearance of the logo makes me think it is not a cable problem. The battery has been fully charged. It doesn't even work when in the cradle, so I don't think it's the battery. Has this happened to anyone else, or are we looking at a repair?

Subject: duplicate contacts
Leonel asked about a problem in duplicating contacts and entries when synchronizing his Revo Plus with Outlook. I have the same problem with contacts. Usually entries do not duplicate unless I have entered them independently on both Outlook and the Psion or Revo. The synch program will enter an appointment on one of the programs if it has been entered on the other -- it won't notice that the appointment is identical to one that's already in the other program. I think the same thing may happen with contacts, but I haven't figured out how to stop the duplication. At one point, I thought it made a difference whether there was a parenthesis around the area code, but that didn't seem to matter. So now I rarely synch the contacts. When I do, I just have to spend some time deleting the duplicates.

vlad: asked:
I have used it with a Nokia 6610 and nokia 8310 and motorola Timeport. Works well via IR with them all. It is such an important feature the new extended phone book management that it is determing my next phone. Shame they do not yet support this feature on the Siemans S55 so I will go for the Nokia 6100 though the new support for the Erricson extended phone book makes the R520 an option. The extended phone book feature is what has made my pocket / portable psions obsolete, and now I just enjoy the Netbook :-)

Like Darryl, I needed to have an additional P-to-Psion lead made up (by serialleads.co.uk). To use Siemens' supplied PR-to-PC lead, I would have to keep crawling under my desk to get to the serial port on the back of my PC tower, to switch it with the Psion/PC link. With the new lead, I make the switch at the Psion end. Much more practical.
Or it would be if the f***er worked. It came this morning, and it hasn't succeeded in making the connection yet. I'm negotiating with Chris Archer at serialleads to get a satisfactory resolution.

I don't have instructions but I do have a netBook with the DIMM sitting
in front of me to talk you through the whole thing...
****** MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP *******
1. IME the hardest thing about this is removing the cover. Move the
screen till it's sitting at 90° to the base unit. Press down on the
left hand cover and slide it forward - if you are a guitar player you
might be able to use a nail but it's never worked for me!
2. With the memory chips upper on the top angle the memory at about
30° upwards and slide it towards the back of the machine until it
engages with the edge connector.
3. Press the leading edge down. The two catches at each side will
move sideways then snap into position when the card is flat.
All the backup stuff up at the top was becuase it didn't go as smoothly
as I hoped and I had to soft reset the machine because it powered up
with a lit (all white) screen and not responding to keypresses or power
-off. Probably becasue I had PsiLoc+ running. Anyway what better
reason to trash one's machine than for the Digest!

I don't know if it's necessarily the best, but I use a Psion WAN Global
PC Card (56K + Fax). I've never had any problems with it so it's as
good as I need. Main thing is to be sure and avoid a WinModem

Dear All,
My company bought me a new laptop ... very nice, but no serial socket. So I did a search on the net and found the cheapest available USB-serial converter from:
http://mcsx.co.uk/products.htm
with postage in the UK it came to £21.15. On the packet it says it's suitable for Mac and Windows... but you need a CD-ROM that can handle small CDs.

Subject: "New" Netbook. 5mx definitiveley discontinued
Hello to all
I just got the info from a French sales rep of Teklogix:
- no "new" Netbook since ver 1.2 issued last September, with up-to-date PC
Card specs (so as to be able to install WiFi or GPRS- but no Bluetooth as
EPOC 5 doesn't manage it), but confirmation that a Windoze CE.net Netbook
will be released by the end of 2003 (with Bluetooth...), together with the
already current Symbian version
- no more 5mx being manufactured, only spare parts for maintenance
- no "light" Netpad: retail market has definitively been abandoned by Psion.
He will be presenting me with both Netbook and Netpad beg. of February: I'll
report to the Digest if anything is of interest.
In the meantime, no answer from POS after reiterated request for more
contrasted, whiter or colour screen on 5mx...
A bientôt

We are pleased to inform you that Dick Chatjaval and Manuel Campos Galvan have joined our Digest Team. Nicole and Jason informed us that they will not have much time this year to assist in running the digest and Dick and Manuel will take over their "rota duties". But of course they will both continue to be in the picture and are on the "reserve bench".
In name of all subscribers we thank both the (not really) outgoing and incoming members of the Team for their time and effort in running the digest.
