Rolf,
I agree with you that I am not solving the root of the problem, I've been scratching my head over this one for a while. I've also installed Psiwin on other PC's running Win'95 to WinXP but have never come across this behaviour.
I don't really have the time, or inclination, to pursue this one further - I'm happy with my solution until someone with more knowledge of Windows can point me to a better one.
Cheers,
Brian.

Recently my IBM Microdrive got swamped in Contact Lens Cleaner fluid. That stuff is the consistency of humnan tears and you know what consistency they are when they've dried out and you try opening you eyes in the morning.
Now, of course, the Microdrive is useless. Has any successfully revived a dead Microdrive? Any tips on flushing it out?
I have everything backed up so I can't lose by trying.
Cheers

Christopher Garibo wrote:
<<I was told that the archived backups are not complete backups. So then how

If I understand this correctly they are not complete in the sense that they are just a repository for files in the "backup" folder which have changed or been deleted. In other words they do no represent a complete image of the Psion on a particular date.
If this is what you want to achieve I would suggest you use a PC backup program such as the excellent aisbackup (from www.aiscl.co.uk) which you can either use as an incremental backup (as Psiwin) or a a session-based backup. If you do a session backup after backing up with Psiwin it will store the complete state of the machine (i.e. that in the "backup" folder) for that date. You can keep all sessions, so you can use to it to restore the Psion to its state on any number of days, and aisbackup will backup to hard drive or CD
Best wishes, Chris

The Avango web address given is the users home address after he/she has logged on, ie thier own password protected area on the avantgo web site. I believe you would need to create a user account (which is for free) to access the avantgo maps. I have an account and will have a look later but am a bit busy at the moment.

ANY maps. And thankyou for the tip!
The nice thing about the site is that they have a download-version for hand-helds, and they used to have one for Epoc-device.
Does anyone know about that?
Designed to be downloaded on the desk-computer and from there to the
handheld, I suppose. The site is too complex for Web, even w. DSL on the Mac it is relatively slow.

Answer to: David Lir
Re.: Longevity screen cable - This has been discussed extensively in the past, and it has not bene proven that not closing and opening the 5MX will improve the longevity of the screen cable. I always opened and closed it quite a lot and never had the screen cable problem. Others (in the time of the ups5 digest) complained that it happened to them after only a few months of usage.

Re. ABP Problem - Maybe you have more than one account ? I think that when looking at totals per category it adds up the totals from all accounts. Are you looking at category balances ?

Hi folks,
Thanks to those who explained the PhoneMan vCard function.
Audio Player - I discovered this at www.vikinggames.hu and on a first trial it seems that, unlike EPlayM, this works fine with mp3 files on the 5mx (and
Revo, presumably). It's shareware (12 euro, ie £8 sterling). Obviously, the sound is tinny, but it appears to play a fairly high resolution (128kbps and 44.1kHz) file on my 5mx, without the skips, for the first time... "Time Is On My Side" by the Stones, if you're curious, and it still sounds good nearly 40 years on :-)

Subject: Leather treatment on an S7/netBook?
Hello all,
I've had a search through all the back issues of the digest(s) and I haven't been able to find this subject having been discussed before...
The one obvious area of wear on an S7/netBook is I guess the leather binding around it - and specifically where the screen hinges open and closed - i.e. where the leather bends every time you open the machine. Before I start experimenting myself, I thought I'd ask for advice. Can anyone recommend the best way to 'treat' the leather so as to keep it supple and stop it cracking? My 1st guess would be leather soap/wax - but I thought I'd ask in case this has already been tried out, etc.
TIA,
Martin Guthrie

I thought I had sent in this posting a few days ago, but haven't seen it listed and can't find it on my computer - so I'll try to re-create it.
Susan Hoffman wrote:

Simple - put the transformer end of the cable outside the freezer.
The cable is small enough in diameter that the flexible sealer
around the freezer door with allow it to pass through. I kept mine
in about 12 hours. The red light stayed on for about 4 hours (I kept
looking every hour) then went to just the green. Removed it and let
it thaw with the charger still going for a few more hours.
The Mako is working "fairly well" after recovering from the freezer,
but I still don't trust it. I've written to POS, D&G, srsgmbh in
Germany, and Palmtop Repair in Toronto, Canada, asking about battery replacement. So far, I've gotten a response from POS - they don't
repair Makos. :-(
From what David Lir says,
> AFAIK, D&G's 'fix' to lengthen the *runtime* (not actually the capacity) is > *software* only.
that isn't what I'd want - I want new batteries. (any comment from
Jim Watson-Gove re D&G?)
Re various comments on 5mx Pro and 5mx from Clove and Exportech, I
have an order in at Clove but it appears to be about the same as
when I had an order in at Expansys - delivery keeps being put off (finally discontinued at Expansys).
Stephane Sage wrote:

No reason to put a 5mx in the freezer - it has marvelous replaceable batteries. :-) I was to the point where I didn't give a damn what
happened to the Mako so thought I'd give it a try.
I'm guessing that in the Digest subject line ,
"EPOC DIGEST V1 # 163(2)", the (2) means the second team member is
doing the work. Yes, no?

Tony Napier wrote:-
<< I do not know why you can't install but it should work fine and is a real pleasure to use >>
There are two problems that will stop an installation.
The Psion 7 often has problems with an installation from the PC. So copy the .SIS file to the Psion and install from the Psion. (ensure that the Psion does not switch off during a PC connection)
The second problem is with Palmtop's (now TomTom) PC installation program. It will stop with an error message. The app .SIS files can be installed as above, but the map .SIS files are now embedded in Palmtop's own format of zip file and so can't be copied to a Psion and then installed.
The solution to this problem, as provided by Palmtop, is to reinstall PsiWin. I've had 3 or 4 different installations of PsiWin (in different partitions - I use Partition Magic) all fail with Palmtop's program. I've not seen this with any other app, so it must be a Palmtop defect.

<There are several ways to efficiently answer the digest messages.>
I suspect your way is less labour intensive than my way as I've always done my replies manually. I copy the relevant text from the email, paste it into a Word file, delete any superfluous characters, paste this text back into a new email addressed to the Digest, put in angle brackets around the message quoted and then put in subject headings on the subject line to match the subjects in the body of the message. It's not as much hard work as I make it sound though and I'd like to think it's nice and neat. I don't want to tempt fate but I've noticed no one has quoted an entire previous Digest for quite some time now. Isn't that great?
