One of the problems I always encounter is how to register shareware for my S7 (and increasingly, my 9210) without having to get to a PC to do it.  Some authors (such as RMR Software) allow you to do it by post but most require you do it on-line.  Web of course is no good for this and I'm not sure how many programs can be registered by using Opera (can any?)  I think PDF Printer is a genuine killer app for EPOC and I'd love to support the author by registering it but AFAIK mBrain Software only let you do this on-line.  There are many new programs coming out for the 9210 I'm interested in but the 9210 itself does not support secure on-line transactions (I think the 9210i may possibly do as this has Opera installed but mine only has Web).  So I suppose the question must be how good is Opera at performing secure on-line transactions?  How does the non PC owning S7/netBook/9210 owner go about getting shareware registered when it can only be obtained via secure transactions?

Sorry, Itamar, I thought that using the message separator is what you were supposed to do. I will stop doing so immediately<g>.

No. I was wrong on that one - you can't embed an existing file, only copy and paste.

Indeed, but many more. I have all my commonly used billable tasks with their account numbers, weather, regular meetings, and travel time. Since I use clip art as icons with many of these events, having everything on Jan 1, 2020 and then using a macro to go to that day, copying the event, pressing the space bar to take me back to today and pasting in the correct time slot makes things a lot easier.

Robert,

you need a supported network card. This is one of the follwing:

Psion Gold Card  (10 Mb Ethernet only)

Psion Dacom Gold Card (10 Mb Ethernet + Modem)

Orinoco Wavelan II (Wireless)

Cisco Aironet 3500/4800/340 (Wireless)

The Gold Cards are out of production, find one second hand!

sometimes it helps if you give the adaptor and/or SM card an extra push into the slot. It's often a problem with the contacts.

I don't know what the "zlib.dll" is but the GSMBSC.TSY and IRDA.PRT have almost certainly been installed as part of either the "Mobile Connectivity Update" or the "Mobile GPRS Update".

The GSMBSC.TSY file relates to GSM mobile phone dialup and the IRDA.PRT updates the IR port.

You can force Psiwin to do a full back-up by deleting or >renaming the back-up folder on your PC or create a new folder for the back-up.

Sorry, I expressed myself wrongly. What I meant is that I create new files every week with updated data (basically customer details in a Data file and order details in a Sheet file), naming them say, Client 6.2. and Orders 6.2. and then I delete the older versions, say Client 30.1. and Orders 30.1. But somehow Psiwin does not recognize the deletion and tries to reinstall all the old data.

Subject: Plastic pens / fax service

Hello group,

Plastic pens:

I use the yellow Palm-Tec stylus as well, but I have a problem. I always inserted the yellow stylus into the 5mx, but whenever I now want to insert the original stylus, it will get inside, but I have to *pull* it out of the Psion, which disables the mechanism. It looks like the yellow stylus has overstretched the spring mechanism and

the normal one does not activate the mechanism anymore.

Any solutions? I tried the "insert the penny below the RS232 port" one, but that did not work.

Fax service:

For a free fax service that sends the faxes to your e-mail as a TIFF I would recommend the Dutch service at www.kpn.com . It is

compatible with MBM View. The caller pays 10 centimes per

minute (when calling from the Netherlands). This service might be

of interest to foreigners as well. Your friends will have to dial an international number, but you don't have any costs. And since

usually only companies want to send you faxes they usually don't mind the international number.

There are two caveats:

1. Subscription is in Dutch. If someone who does not speak Dutch

isi interested: drop me a line.

2. You need to receive a minimum of 1 fax per six months.

Solution: send an e-mail to remoand you will receive your own "fax". (replace "restofyourfaxnumber" of course).

Yours truly,

My Series 7 has two e-mail accounts defined, one for Compuserve and one for freeler (a "free" internet provider in Holland). I have never been able to send mail when connecting with freeler, only if I dial up with Compuserve directly. I tried the above trick, to see whether I could send mail "from" compuserve but dialling up with freeler. As far as I can tell, all logon iDs and passwords are correct. Does anybody have any bright ideas as to why I am unable to send email from certain providers?

Can anyone from the Digest enlighten me of a free email to sms service. Hence when i receive an email i get a notification on my mobile, via sms. Then download it with my Psion.

Currently im using the Locust service, available only with Orange network in the UK. However, Yesterdays shock announcement that Orange will start charging per sms for this service from the end of March, looks like very bad news for Locust users and other psion users.

I have looked at the Uboot.com service, this now charges per message, and have previously used the Genie now O2 portal. However, tried various settings, e.g filters and overrides, but, unable to get this service working. Any idea's on this or any other service which enables an email address on a mobile would be greatly appreciated

Anyone know about USB (2) speed?

My new PC (Sony) doesn't have a serial port, and rather than install a card, I bought a USB - Serial connector.

It works fine, but backups and contacts syncs are MUCH slower than when I used a serial port.

This may be due to the switch from Win-98 to Win-XP, or is it due to using USB?

Does anyone have any ideas?  I though USB was faster than serial.

Subject: Batteries in whilst changing Dimms

Hi All

Itamar asked about whether batteries should be taken out when doing the Dimm upgrade. The instructions said that they should on the netBook and it is particularly important as the OS is in RAM. The RAM size is changing with the upgrade. On the 7 it might be less critical as the OS is in ROM, but I would always advise following the instructions for the sake of safety.

I actually got around to looking at Handango in respect to buying PDFPrinter. Only problem is that you need to have the original email that you bought the app with to get further upgrades. Perhaps what it actually means is that it just needs some detail from it? Who knows. I can't even get to the checkout screen today (or yesterday). You can have them mailed to you if you register and send Euros to MBrain(?) to register. I am sure that it was easier to register AND get the upgrades for PDF+ through Braindock. They were sent automatically.

greetings mortals!

netBook's OS is in CF, the one in the ROM is just an instruction for the netBook to look for the OS in the CF for loading. Right?

would it be possible then, to upgrade a 156-built netBook by just inserting a CF (containing newer OS build 158), after a hard reset?

if it is, would anyone sell me a CF containing the Build158? i will pay by cheque. i prefer to buy from someone here in uk - (delivery could take weeks if i buy it from some one abroad)

i hope i am not breaking any laws in doing this. tell me if i am. i will be paying for the CF and postage not for the OS.

Hi David,

They both belong to the Mobile Connectivity Update from Psion. You can move the to the D drive without any harm, but you should keep in mind if you do so, that the installation file "MobileConnectivityUpdate.sis" in C:\System\Install\ will no longer be able to keep track of the files.

> zlib.dll 42k

I don't know which application it belongs to, but I guess it must be someone that has to do with compression. In the Windows world such a file is used in zip managers, so it would be my guess the same applies to the Epoc world.

However, none of my zip managers (Navigator and RMRZip) do use the file.

Does anyone know how to get PsiWin/Outlook to include meeting location information when it synchronises diaries with the Psion.

I am moving from GroupWise e-mail/diaries which adds the location to the end of the Psion Subject, I'm desperate to know where I should be going and I want to use the Psion to transfer all my entries between electronic diary systems.

<<<<

Hi Mike, I'm not aware of any software 'fix' for this (I have the same problem and had gotten used to MS ActiveSync transferring this info. when I used PPC devices in the past).  I've started typing in the location in brackets at the end of the Subject line when entering a new appointment in Outlook.  This then displays the same way when viewed in Outlook's normal views AND syncs. with Agenda properly.  :-)

Re.: Leather treatment - The question is really whether it is needed at all or not, weighing it against the risk of using oils and/or creams and/or wax on the body of the S7. I suppose that as it has never been mentioned no-one has as yet encountered a problem with the leather.

<<<<

Could be Itamar.  OTOH I've spoke with two ex-Psion employees who've both said that the leather does tend to degrade slightly over time.  Obviously if I try any creams/oils/etc. out I'll be being extremely careful (test patch 1st, not getting it onto the plastic, etc.).  ;-)

Hi Jack, Could be - I haven't tried it.  Un-installing and re-installing PsiWin on Win2K or WinXP is pretty painless with v2.3.3.  I.e. it un-installs the app. properly (compared with pre-2.3 versions which left all sorts of junk on your machine!).

I've just mentioned that to David Lir that I made the same move you have made. Could be that my old Sony parallel port drive wasn't one of the fastest but my new USB multi-card drive is approximately 2.5 times as fast. I've also noticed that the speed differences between my various CF card are much more noticeable with the USB drive. The 256 MByte Lexar I have, complete with 12x speed mark and "USB Enabled" logo, is a real flyer compared to my old 10 MByte Psion and 40 MByte SanDisk cards.

<<<<

Maybe I was just lucky - or maybe I'm remembering through rose-tinted glasses!  ;-)  (Or maybe all my CF cards are just so slow that it doesn't make any difference - serves me right for buying the cheapest brands!)

On the subject of truncating file names (and something I meant to mention earlier); I had exactly the same problem with my parallel port reader. Problem was neither hardware nor OS (specifically) related.  It was solved by downloading the latest driver for my reader/OS - in my case from Kingston Technologies.  Worked perfectly after that

The battery is a pack of two standard NiMh AAA cells. According to Psion, the charging system has to be recalibrated if you replace them and your new cells aren't identical to the old ones, but I think I'd have a go when that day comes. To open the Revo / Mako and get at the battery, simply remove the (glued on) small metal cover in the middle of the top of the machine taking care not to bend it and pull out the two small metal pins.

The current could be a replacement for the Psion but is poor value for

money ( small monochrome screen , no IR , no Bluetooth , no full RS-232  ,

I have talked over the phone ( briefly ) with POSLtd about this thing  and

at more lenght with an Austrian reseller that incidentally too is/was in

the Psion business

Both told me that the user interface is entirely workable as far as plain

text input is concerned , but working on somewhat more complicated

documents is complicated because there is no touchscreen

The Messenger is far more interesting as it can run a complete Linux environment and should therefore be completely controllable from the Psion using Opera , nFTP , PLPTOOLS and Hermes over TCP/IP or just Datacomms

over plain serial

This could also solve the problem with connecting to mail servers

requiring authentication/SSL , YOU CAN RUN THE LIKES of fetchmail or qmail

on it and after retrieval use a small POP 3 server on the Filewalker

Messenger  and the EMAIL app to tranfer the collected messages to your

Psion's inbox

Palm/Dana users please note : Direct sync between this device and your Palm/Dana is possible ! ( anyone on the list willing to port the necessary tools to this thing to make that happen ? , tools here :

http://www.invair.de/html/support.html )

I also talked briefly over the phone with Mr Adrian Steinmann (

Firmeninhaber ,  Marcus can you explain ? ) but he declines to give out

any information over the phone , you have to send email

He did confirm  to me that on this product the RS-232 is completely implemented so communication with all Psions should be no problem

Estimated price is around  EUR 650

Subject: Electricians and light bulbs

The electrician will cost you a lot more than £25. Whatever he does, you'll have to pay for a full hour plus his mileage. Then he'll find that he doesn't have the correct bulb in his van and charge you for his time and mileage to drive back to the shop to get one. Then he'll find that he needs a ladder to change the bulb, and as yours is not approved by the relevant authorities, he'll get in his van again to fetch a ladder, and charge you for the mileage. Then he'll discover that the problem was in the switch, not the bulb. He will of course not have the correct replacement switch in his van, so off he goes to get one...

Thought for the day:

How many software designers does it take to change a light bulb?

None, it's a hardware problem.

Subject: Tomeaider on Netbook

Howdy!

David Lir asked about which of his 5mx applications would work on the NetBook and mentioned TomeRadier.

TomeRaider is registered to the UID of your Psion, so you have to e-mail them and get a new code for the new machine.

Dear Marcus,

<< Does anybody know a trick, e. g. a special plug or cable, to fix it? >>

Is it possible to create a default profile on the BenQ beamer with settings corresponding with the output characteristics of the Voyager VGA card? Looks to me that the BenQ can do with a few 'hints' when it detects the Voyager .

Dear Robert,

<< It's a "FNW-3600-TX 10/100M PC Card LAN Adapter with DirecDock" from Planex communications Inc., and it works okay on a friends laptop so there's nothing intrinsically wrong with the card >>

This "DirecDock" thing could indicate that the LAN adapter uses the CardBus standard the netBook doesn't support.

<< If it isn't, which card do people recommend I use for wired LAN access? >>

As the list of compatible LAN cards will be subject to change it's best to ask this question to Psion-Teklogix directly.

Subject: Re: netBook - IR Travel Modem - Nokia 6210

Dear Sajid,

<< if the netbook's os is in the rom what is the cf card for? >>

The netBook has its operating system in a protected section of internal RAM. What's in ROM is a small boot-stub which checks whether the OS is present. When that's not the case it checks whether an OS image is available on CF card or on a PC that's connected by a serial link. The OS image is then retrieved, loaded in RAM and further execution is handed over to the OS. The same boot-stub handover takes place when the OS image is already in protected RAM.

<< anyone has the settings for connecting an ir travel modem with a netbook? >>

Modem tab:

- Name : Psion 56K IR Travel Modem

- Speed : 115200 bps

- Connect via : Infrared

- Fax class : Auto

Initialisation tab:

- Init. (reset) string : AT&F

- Data init. string : Leave empty

- Fax init. string : Leave empty

Advanced tab:

- Flow Control : None

- Terminal detect (DSR/DTR) : Unchecked

- Carrier detect (DCD) : Unchecked

- Modem type : Fixed line

<< i also need the settings for connecting the nokia6210+ir travel modem >>

As the Nokia 6210 has and infrared port as well as an integrated 'GSM modem' you don't need the 56K IR Travel Modem at all but can connect directly. The settings for the 6210 are as follows.

For 9,600 bps GSM

Modem tab:

- Name : Nokia 6210

- Speed : 57600 bps

- Connect via : Infrared

- Fax class : Auto

Initialisation tab:

- Init. (reset) string : AT&F&K3

- Data init. string : Leave empty

- Fax init. string : Leave empty

Advanced tab:

- Flow Control : Hardware (RTS/CTS)

- Terminal detect (DSR/DTR) : Checked

- Carrier detect (DCD) : Unchecked

- Modem type : Mobile

For 28,800 bps HSCSD

Modem tab:

- Name : Nokia 6210

- Speed : 57600 bps

- Connect via : Infrared

- Fax class : Auto

Initialisation tab:

- Init. (reset) string : AT&F&K3

- Data init. string : AT+CBST=16

- Fax init. string : Leave empty

Advanced tab:

- Flow Control : Hardware (RTS/CTS)

- Terminal detect (DSR/DTR) : Unchecked

- Carrier detect (DCD) : Unchecked

- Modem type : Mobile

<< how come i can send fax using nokia 6210 + netbook but not receive them >>

That's because you don't have your network account activated for incoming fax calls or aren't using your account's fax number. Outgoing and incoming voice, fax and data calls have a different digital content and need to be routed differently by the network. Reason why you get separate fax and data numbers when you contact your network operator to have your account activated for incoming fax and data calls.

Subject: Re: Answering the digest

Dear Kevin,

<< I copy the relevant text from the email, paste it into a Word file, delete any superfluous characters, paste this text back into a new email addressed to the Digest, put in angle brackets around the message quoted... >>

What I do is to copy the whole Digest into a Data file immediately after I've received it. The Data file has numeric fields for the volume and issue numbers plus a memo field for the text. The Digest e-mail remains in my in-box as it's used again at a later stage.

I read the Digest in Data and when I want to reply to a message I copy the whole message, including the header,  into Word. The info in the 'From' line of the header is modified to a greeting ("From: Kevin Thorne " becomes "Dear Kevin,") followed by a blank line. The 'Subject' line of the header is then stripped of the words "Subject:" and "Re:" ("Subject: Answering the digest" becomes "Answering the digest") followed by a blank line.

I then place the two angle brackets and a space (<< ) as the start of quote marker. When the first line(s) of the message is/are the one(s) I like to quote I place the end of quote marker ( >>) at the end of the line(s) and add a few blank lines. In case the lines are further on in the text I block-select the lines up to the first word of the line(s) to quote, delete the block, etc. I then start to type my response to the quoted text one line beneath the quote.

Result is that the remainder of the orginal message will be a few blank lines beneath the text I'm writing. In case I'd like to respond to another section of the message I place another start of quote marker one blank line below the first section of my reply, block-select the lines I want to removed ... etc. When I'm finished I block-select whatever's left of the original message beneath my reply, delete the block and add my signature. This is followed by a spelling check and a final proof reading.

The next step is that I block-select the whole text of my reply - copy the block - switch to the Email application - create a reply to the Digest e-mail - delete the automatically created quote and paste my reply. I then cut the subject line (see above) out of my reply - paste it into the subject field and place my reply message in the out-box.

I then go back to my copy of the Digest in Data and read on, till I find another message I like to reply to. When I've finished reading the Digest I finally remove the Digest e-mail from the in-box of the Email application.  Which makes it clear why I keep the original(s) in my in-box, a Digest e-mail that's still in there indicates that I haven't written all my replies.

<< I don't want to tempt fate but I've noticed no one has quoted an entire previous Digest for quite some time now >>

I had two macros which partially automated my manual procedure. One of the two had a hole in it so that I once inadvertantly sent out a copy of the entire Digest. Itamar, fortunately, cought it and reported the error back to me. The big mistake I made was to start mending the hole in the macro and adding a few extras to them at the same time. The macros are now a bit of a mess as the way digesteers write messages doesn't always correspond with my interlinked procedures for automatic text detection. In other words, I've tried to be too clever and have added more holes than the one I had to patch. I'm therefore back at 'manual labour' as it's probably better to write a set of new macros.

<< Ahh, you're getting an 'Error code 2' right? >>

If I remember correctly Martin, the code was something like 142.

I did not believe TomTom when they e-mailed me as a reinstall did not work.  I even installed PsiWin on another PC which also did not work.  I've got CDs with 2.1, 2.3.1, 2.3.2 & 2.3.3 but did use 2.3.3 at that time.  However, I backup a 7, 3mx, Revo+ and two 5mx with the same copy of PsiWin.

Your reply, in a single sentence amounts to:-

TomTom requires Psion's 'InstApp' application to be on C: as it does not look on Z:.

So maybe TomTom support do not fully understand their problem!

Thanks for your excellent detailed explanation.

A small point about PsiWin.  Your reply suggests that it puts a copy of 'InstApp' onto C: on a 5mx or 7 - if a Psion is connected while installing PsiWin - something I don't do.  (This was typed on a Revo+ at work, but I've just checked on the prime 5mx and 7, and found 'InstApp' on both machines on both Z: & C:.)

However have you investigated their own format zip files?  I've had a quick attempt, but got nowhere.  There are similarities with a PKZip file.  There are many users who would like to extract the map .SIS files.
