Subject: Battery - Power Confusion
While reading a discussion of powering the netbook/7, I looked at my 5MX. The AC power input says 6V DC. OK I understand that, but the internal batteris are two 1.5Volt AA batteries. That only equals 3V. What am I missing? Then I got to thinking about my old Model 100 (a Tandy of early 1980's). It took 4 AA batteries or AC adapter. To get a longer life away from the AC adapter people would buy from Radio Shack or Model 100 Club, a long plastic holder for 4 D (1.5 volt) cell batteries. With a little plug from RShack, you had 6Volts. .. So my confusion is why does the AC/DC input on the 5MX require 6 V and the AA is only 3V? Also... could we do the same thing on the 5s that we did on the Model 100... get a 4 D cell holder and the proper plug and have more power?

I don't know where I got it, but I have a "Revo Battery Upgrade.sis" file which I installed on my Mako when trying to get the damned thing to work properly. Maybe that's what D&G uses as a "software" upgrade. I saw no positive results I could recognize.
BTW, I never got answers from D&G and that German outfit srgmbh.de. I did get an answer from the Toronto Palmtop Support Services and have sent the Mako off for (Jim, take note) battery and PCB replacement (whatever that is - I thought PCB was a plastic for making lawn sprinkler
pipes). Maybe its the thingy that controls when the fast charge goes
on and off.
Jim - I haven't run your backup test, but I do know that the latest
backup files on my PC always are an exact copy of what's on my Psion
and the archives contain my deleted files. Can't imagine why your
backups work differently. Have you tried to uninstall PsiWin, run
the PsiWin Reg Clean, then re-install PsiWin?

Not that I'm aware of. BenQ answerd my email and suspected tha the voyager timing is off (VESA) specs. I'm still waiting for more input.
I'd like to be able to program against the card but for that I would need the driver specs (and source) to be able to change the timing.

You can embed files in Agenda, Jotter, Word etc., if you have the Symlink
software installed, you should also be able to link to web pages if you have
Web on your Psion, so this won't work on the Netbook with the latest OS as
Opera has replaced Web.
I have just double checked to ensure that it works on Agenda & Word and it
does work, I use it frequently on Jotter, also each linked file can have
further links.
The embedded link shows a shortcut to the file, it does not show the actual
content of the file until you click on the link, at which point you can also
edit the file.

I suspect the answer to this has to do with specifying user ids and passwords AND smtp server.
For dial up you will have a <freeler> (in this case) username and password.
For sending your email I believe you *have* to use your ISPs out going SMTP mail server,
therefore within your email program (in this case compuserve?) you would have to specify the smtp server details used by your ISP<freeler> in order to send mail out through them.
(I believe when receiving mail you specify your mail provider (not ISP) POP details, and mail user id and password).
Hope this kinda makes sense

I need to record some details whilst working in an aircraft cockpit (its not a real cockpit but part of an aircraft simulator), I want then to be able to download the details into an MS Access database (yes I hate M$ but the Access database is a tool that is used (in my) company wide). So the question is, is there a program on the netbook that will record details in a database style AND allow these to be exported / sychronised with a MS Access database ?
Thanks for any suggestions

Ian,
Virtually all ISPs prevent you from sending mail unless you have an account with them, and are connected via their own internet connection. This is to prevent unscrupulous individuals sending SPAM: as they can control those who connect with thenx but not those who connect with other providers.
In other words, if you dial-up CompuServe you can only send email from a CompuServe account, and likewise with Freeler. This doesn't prevent you receiving mail: which you should be able to do from any email account you have regardless of your current connection.
Hope that answers your question.

Jason

Re.: backup and restore - When you do the back-up, it should back-up the files dated 6.2 and move the files 30.1 from the back-up folder to the archive folder. If you than do a restore only the files 6.2 should be restored. So I don't understand why it behaves differently with you. How do you exactly do your back-up and restore ?
Answer to : Ian Chapple.
RE. sending mail - In order to stop sending of SPAM almost all ISP's will not allow the sending of email with their smtp server while connecting via another ISP. The trick is that you have to change in the email settings (Tools -> Account settings in the email program) the default account to be used AS WELL AS use the correct SMTP address (which for Compuserve is "smtp.compuserve.com"). You also have to verify that your ISP is POP3 compatible, otherwise your Psion will not be usable with that ISP.

This will only be a problem if you ever need to uninstall it or install an upgraded version, and why would anyone need to uninstall the Mobile Connectivity Update?
It's been my experience that most of the stuff under C:\System can safely be moved to D: The exception is the INI files in the subfolders under C:\System\Apps. If they were moved, the applications they belonged to would probably just create new ones on C: and lose your settings in the process. Other exceptions would be the Contacts file and the Mail folders which should only be moved by the Email application.
As for the Mail folders, these are the only things I prefer to keep on C. The reason for this is that if your battery is getting low when you connect to get your mail, you can have a serious crash if it gets too low to write to CF while you're downloading your mail. This happened to me twice a long time ago and since then I have kept the mail folder on C and used SaveMail to keep it's size under control.
While we're on that subject: I've recently experienced some very peculiar behaviour from the e-mail application on my Mako. I had around 60 e-mails in my draft folder (shocking isn't it?) and whenever the total number of e-mails in the Email application got up to around 80 (not sure of the exact number), downloading e-mails would crash with an "Access Denied" message when downloading the 81st e-mail. The connection to the net would be instantly broken even if there was also outgoing e-mail being sent at the time.
I've "solved" the problem by getting rid of most of the backlog from Draft, but still don't understand why this was happening as I know other people have a lot more than 80 messages in Email. I suppose the best would be to clear ALL the backlog, delete the mail folder and create a new one as I expect there must be a corrupted file in there.

Subject: EPOC Emulator - missed opportunity and connectivity issues
Hi Digestives,
Recently I've been more desk based (using Win XP) than on the road, so have been using my Psion S5c a bit less, which hopefully means it'll last a bit longer :-)
I've been trying to find a solution to synchronising and accessing my Psion data with the PC. I've tried synching with Lotus Organizer and have given this up as lost cause, so now I use the EPOC Emulator. I think Psion missed a huge opportunity
here - having 'my Psion' on the desktop is fantastic, it works very quickly and makes everything easy & convenient, as long as I remember to copy the altered files back to my Psion when I set off on the road. The emulator could have formed the basis for a perfect connectivity suite with just a little better integration into windows - what a shame.
I use the backup program to copy the files to my hard drive, and then use the emulator to access these, following which I manually copy the altered files back to the Psion
My questions are:
1. Is there an easy way/program to ensure the PC/Psion always have the most recently updated files on them ?
2. I can't copy & paste from the emulator to windows - this is a HUGE disadvantage, any suggestions ?
TIA.
Regards,
Jason

You might try ProjXpert http://corisoft.free.fr/index_px.html
One of it's strenghts that I've found is that it integrates with the
built-in Contacts app, and allows you to easily track calls from each
contact - inlcuding the subject of each call.
It also integrates with the built-in Agenda appointments and todos, has a
built in file manager, and tracks tasks, purchases, Issues, expenses, and
time logged on each task. Each item can be linked to other items.
The one weakness is tracking Todos among multiple people. You can do that
using categories, but it is not a strength.
Other apps to try would be:
Customer Relations Manager -
http://www.pocketiq.com/home/software/details.asp?product=CustomerRelationMa
nager
RMR Contact - http://www.rmrsoft.com/epoc/contact.htm
I did a comparison review a while back on Plan, LifePlan, and QuickP (an
earlier incarnation of ProjXpert). It might be useful as well.
http://www.foxpop.ndirect.co.uk/thirdparty/project01.htm
As far as using the built in programs, you could use Data or Sheet to set
up a database of issues and tasks and use some macros to link these to
agenda and contact entries, but by the time you have done that you could
have purhased one of these programs that could do it more smoothly and
without the learning curve.
Good luck.

Hi Ian,
This has something to do with preventing SPAM. Let's say (just as an example as I don't have these accounts) CompuServe's outgoing SMTP server is "smtp.compuserve.com" and freeler's outgoing SMTP server is "smtp.freeler.com". Your normal ISP is CompuServe, which means that when you connect to the Internet you must use "smtp.compuserve.com" for both accounts as outgoing SMTP server. The incoming POP3 server should of course remain specific to each account.
Now if you want to connect via your freeler ISP, you'll have to change the outgoing SMTP server to "smtp.freeler.com" for both accounts in order to able to use them. Otherwise you'll always get an error because you have connected to one server, but are trying to send from another.
I have two providers. The one is Orange with a dial-up number and the other is TDC, which is used for my LAN and has no dial-up number.
When I want to connect my Psion via mobile phone I change my outgoing SMTP to mail.wanadoo.dk and when I want to connect via MochaPPP I change my outgoing SMTP to smtp.mail.dk - that's the way it works.

I might suggest you take Mike Woodward up on his offer in Digest 166. Ask for a copy of his Epoc Word document explaining how he manages projects. When skimming initially, thought it was just showing file structure. Ok that was nice and even useful. Then I actually read!!! what he had written. Some very nice suggstions for managing a project, or just controlling your Epoc files and folders. The point was brought home this morning when trying to find a file on my PC. I couldn't remember the name, and it had accidently gotten saved in the wrong folder. I hadn't used Mike's naming system on it, so I searched (even using Windoz Find) for like 10 minutes. I quickly renamed it using Mike's system. I even knew part of the system he suggested, but got lazy thinking "long names" would do the trick.
