Subject: Wired LAN card
Many thanks to Marcus and Rolf for their help in identifying which card to use to connect my netBook to a wired LAN.
Before trying to get a Psion Gold Card (Marcus's suggestion) I'm still trying to find out if the card I have will work - Planex Communications Inc's FNW-3600-TX. Rolf thought the 'with DirecDock' specification might mean it was a CardBus, but the box also says it's a 'PC Card (PCMCIA Type II) - so does that mean it *is* the right type of card?
If I can establish that the card I've bought is right, then I'll know that the problem is with my settings.

the latest OS as Opera has replaced Web.<<
Indeed, but the original question was can you embed files using the
insert object option in the standard Psion programs. I incorrectly
thought that you could embed existing files but you can only embed a new
file. A thought did come to me however - wouldn't it possible to copy
the contents of an existing file to the newly created object and have
the same result as if you had embedded the original file? The only
problem would be that the embedded object would be static and changes to
it wouldn't update the original file. OTOH, if you used the embedded
file as the original and deleted the original file, this would address
that problem.

This should be possible using the freeware program PsiDat. It's a real
semi-relational database that can use linking tables in much the same
way as Access. It can export to dBase III and dBase IV formats as well
as CSV so Access should be able to read the exported file. I don't know
of any way to sync the files with Access however.

What problems did you have with Lotus Organizer and what version were
you using? I regularly sync to Organizer 6.0 using PsiWin 2.3.3 on a Win
Xp machine and find it works very well.
<<1. Is there an easy way/program to ensure the PC/Psion always have the

emulator to windows - this is a HUGE disadvantage, any suggestions ?>>
No, there is no way to sync the emulator files with your Psion in the
same way that the Palm Desktop does. The thing to remember is that the
emulator was created primarily as a programming tool and not an end user
program. You can run Psion programs that have WINS versions available in
the emulator, something that can't be done with the Palm Desktop. For
the same reason, you can't copy and paste from the emulator to Windows
since Windows is essentially unaware that the emulator is running in a
Windows environment. I do agree that, with some work and foresight,
Psion could have developed the emulator into a Palm Desktop-type
application that would have been very useful and may have blunted some
of Palm's original momentum. Palm, to it's credit, recognized that many
people didn't have (or want) PIM's like Outlook or Organizer so the
included Desktop answered for a PC PIM that the average Joe could setup
and use with a minimum of effort and no additional money outlay. The S5
was developed at a time when this concept was not prevalent and, by the
time the potential was understood, I think it was just too late for a
company of Psion's size and resources to change.

What exactly did you beam from the Visor to the Revo? Things like Agenda
records and contacts shouldn't be a problem but files are another thing.
The Palm OS uses a file structure that is completely different from the
Psion so a program file wouldn't work at all. If the file was PDB (Palm
Database) file, then you can get the freeware PDBRead, which will allow
you to read these types of files on your Psion.

Nothing really...
The S5/S5mx uses two because of space limitations.
If you listen to it, particularly when you turn on the backlight, you'll hear a buzzing sound.
That is a 'switch mode' power supply, converting the output from the batteries to a more suitable level.

The TRS-80 Model 100 is the size of a laptop, so no problems fitting a set of 4 AA's internally. (And with most of the IS's in it running on 5V that just made sense :-)
The earlier Epson HX-20 laptop used a set of 4 C-size Ni-cad cells, though...

It's because they connect at different points in the PSU chain.
Yes, you could make such a power-pack if you want to, but I'd recommend using a square or flat holder for 4 AA's instead of D-size just because of the size. (You don't want the power pack to be bigger than the computer do you?)
One note, when the output of the pack falls below a certain level(not certain which), the System will report it to 'no external power' but will still draw from it. (Will cause havok with the counters :-)
BUT... Why do it?
It only takes a moment or three to change batteries...
(I always had a fresh set of Ni-mh batteries with me when I used the S5)
On the 100 I can understand since it doesn't like to be shut down, but the S5...
:-)
Trygve
Happily typing away on his netBook...
BTW: A bit more fun... The Psion Siena(uses 2 AAA cells) doesn't HAVE an external power connector, but can get pwer through the serial port. When I connect the PCMCIA pod it gets 6V, but when I connect the Siena SSD drive it gets 9V...
(The 9V is from a Psion S3 power supply :-)

Subject: Voltage Confusion/Program-File Icons
Hi Woody,
The Psion 5mx power input is higher than the battery voltage. I could guess a number of good reasons for this. If you can produce a 6 volt DC *smooth* power pack only use the Psion external power socket (check and then double-check the polarity) - large capacity batteries should be plenty smooth enough. Using a 3 volt power pack you would need to find some way of getting the power where it's needed (again, check and then double-check the polarity) - easier said than done especially if you don't want the Psion's innards exposed.
But I find it easier to use rechargeable batteries and take 4 out with me. This is smaller and lighter than the power pack you propose (and most people would only take 2). Indoors I use a Psion power supply and a POD docking station. The 5mx doesn't use a vast amount of power after all (but my old 3a uses even less).
The netBook, Series 7 and Mako/Revo don't take ordinary batteries so they need a different strategy, what I don't know.
Hi Eric,
There is a freeware app. called "Remapper" that might do what you want, but if so I expect that Pascal Nicolas's excellent "Macro5" will do it too.
You might prefer to use "Remapper" as it will differentiate between different approaches to the icon, but "Macro5" does more overall. I use both.
Also there was an NG thread (comp.sys.psion.apps) called "Change Jotter/Phone Icons" which explained how to change the function of the SilkScreen keys by editing the "c:/system/apps/shell/shell.ini"! I'm not sure this will help though unless you are using a different app..
There is another free program called "KeyDirect" too and several utilities to rename contact data files.
But I suspect your best option will be simply to use a dedicated Data file and assign an icon to that, probably using Macro5.
Happy days,
Phil.

I have been trying to connect to Purple Software's site for about a week and keep getting a connection error. Are they still operational, so
that I may purchase a Revo boxed copy?

Hi.
Does anyone know how the 5mx and MC218 keyboard works? My MC218 is dying. The touch sensitive layer on the screen is cracked and now the screen cable is going (again). It lasted around 1 1/2 years.
I have not decided yet whether to replace the MC218 with an S7 or a 5mx, but if I go for a 5mx, I would like to have the MC218 keyboard on it. My question is whether the keyboard layout is in the keyboard itself or in the ROM. If it's in the keyboard, it seems like a good idea to install the MC218 keyboard on the 5mx to get the layout I prefer.
If the keyboard layout is in the ROM, I would still have to redefine the layout, so I'll have to use Keyboard Mapper and just move the keys over without changing the keyboard itself.

I'll certainly have a look at Second Copy. As previously mentioned, several (but not all) of my long filenames get messed up if I back up via the PCMCIA adapter. Hopefully, Second Copy will solve this. My solution to the long backup time via PsiWin is to start the backup before I go to bed at night. It's finished by the time I get up next morning...
I'm about to buy a new(er) laptop, so it may be prudent to ask what WindoZe version will work best with PsiWin etc. (And maybe this will solve the long filenames problem too?) It's a Toshiba PIII / 600. It comes with Win XP and yes, it does have an RS232 port.
I seem to remember one of the newer WindoZe versions has a problem with RS232 ports, but can't remember which one. I may set the computer up with dual boot to run my yacht navigation software in NT for a bomb proof environment. If anyone here knows how to set up dual boot, I'd be grateful for an off list e-mail.
Oh, while we're at it, I know that you can buy a USB thingie that has a couple of RS-232 ports, Centronics (printer) and a couple of extra USB ports. Does anyone have information on brand names and vendors? This would enable me to connect all my peripherals to the laptop with just one wire and would simplify moving it between the saloon table and the nav station.
PS. I'd also like recommendations for an USB TV-tuner, preferably one that supports all TV systems around the world. If I find something suitable, I have a multi standard 12V and 240V 14" colour TV for sale and will gain a foot of bookshelf space.

Standard procedure for electric bits like starter motors and alternators for boat engines that have been in salt water is to boil them and change the water several times to get the salt out. I'm not sure whether I'd recommend boiling a microdrive, but you should at the very least wash it in distilled water and change the water several times. When you've done all you can to wash the salt out of it, I'd suggest drying it as well as possible with a hair drier and then leaving it in a warm dry place for at least a week.
You certainly need to get the salt crystals washed out ASAP as they will actually attract water and damp salt is very corrosive. A single damp salt crystal can short out the whole thing. The car stereo I had in my last boat (which was a lot damper than Naomi) suddenly stopped working on FM. I opened it and found that one leg on an IC had corroded right through. There were no other signs of corrosion, but obviously one small drop of salt water had found it's way in. I cleaned it up and soldered a small bit of wire to replace the leg and all was well. Then I mounted the stereo in a drier spot.
I don't know whether salt dissolves in isopropyl alcohol, so maybe it would be an idea to reverse Rolf Brunsting's cleaning suggestion and use distilled water first to wash the salt out and then isopropyl alcohol to wash the damp out. (Water mixes with alcohol.) I dropped a mobile phone in sea water a few years ago. I yanked the battery off immediately, took the phone apart and washed everything thoroughly in methylated spirit which was all I had available at the time. The phone was fine, but the battery was done for.
DO NOT put the drive in a computer until you have made every attempt at cleaning it and have dried it thoroughly. If it is not already ruined, it may be if it is powered up while it is damp and well salted.

It may be prudent to note that there is a bug in SmartFormat. If you use the "Minimise Wasted Space" option for cards bigger than 32 Mb (?), the card won't work. Use Ateliers default format for these disks as that gives the same format settings as "Minimise Wasted Space" should have done. Of course, there may be an updated version without the bug by now. As far as I remember, the problem is that it attempts to use an odd number of sectors per cluster and this is not supported by EPOC.
I tried checking what it suggested for my 256 Mb card, and the settings were the same for Minimise Wasted Space and Default with 8 sectors per cluster for both options, so I assume the odd number only occurrs from 32Mb up to some larger size, but not for disks as large as 256 Mb. Anyway, if you use the Default (Atelier) setting, you should be OK for all cards over 32Mb.

Your DATA file must be huge. I copy the digest once finished to a text file on my D disk (I have the TextEditor installed) and than zip every 10 digests into one zip file. During this process I also copy the subject list at the top into a DATA file like you have.
