Firstly, a big thank you to Itamar for all his work (and initiative).

Secondly, as there were many readers who did not respond, could it be that it is mainly males between the ages of 40-55 who respond to such surveys!!!

Light-heartedly yours

<< "The Revo (or any of the ER5 family of machines) cannot be used with a modem which doesn't support the command "AT+FCLASS=?". The modem doesn't need to support fax but it must respond to this command without giving ERROR, otherwise it will try three times and then time out without dialling." >>

Is this true for EPOC Release 5 - Release 5 plus Mobile Connectivity Update 1.1 - Release 5 plus Mobile Connectivity Update 2.0 - or in all cases? And why should a modem or mobile phone give a response other than ERROR when

the standards say that it has to respond with ERROR for unrecognised and unsupported AT commands?

-------------------------8<----------------------

The "quoted" part above, excluding the words in brackets, looks to me to be quoted verbatim from something which I posted some time ago, although I could be wrong. The original information that modems not supporting the command AT+FCLASS=? couldn't be used with a Psion was posted in the newsgroups by Clive Evans while he was still working for Psion. To the best of my knowledge, installation of either Mobile Connectivity Update doesn't prevent the AT+FCLASS=? string from being sent. I have the GPRS update (MCU2.0)  installed and the string is still present.

As to why a modem shouldn't give an "error" response to an unsupported command, no-one is suggesting that it should do otherwise, but if it does respond with "ERROR" instead of "0", the modem is incompatible with a Psion.

Reply to Sajid T. Jumaani

nFTP is an FTP client that can be used to down/upload files from/to the

Internet or a PC with FTP server software if the PC & Netbook are on the same

network.

NetStatRF displays network information such as signal strength when the

Netbook is connected to a radio LAN network, it only displays this information

when there is an ACTIVE connection as the Netbook powers down the radio LAN

card when not actually being used.

I have a radio LAN at home so I can share a dial-up internet connection among

my PCs & Netbook, I can also use my main PC as an FTP server to down/upload

files from any other PC & the Netbook.

There is also an FTP server for the Psion but I have never tried it.

Have you tried using Jotter, it's quite easy to get it to organise your To Do

lists

Put a couple of spaces in front of the headings e.g. <space><space>To Do Title

Put a single space in front of any sub headings

Use a number or letter of the alphabet in front of each To Do

Put a 'Z' in front of any completed entry

You can also expand this to have more than 1 To Do list in a single Jotter

file, try using A1 for priority 1 items in To Do list 'A'.

Cant remember codes then expand the prefix by changing the 'A' to a memorable

code for example A1 could be HOME 1 for all priority 1 tasks to do at home.

Use the Jotter sort facility to get all the entries in the correct order.

You can also have a jotter that links to multiple To Do jotters with Symlink

which can also link to any other files related to the To Do.

nFTP is a simple FTP program that you can use to up or download files to servers on the net.

Quite useful sometimes...

NetStatRF is a program that shows you graphically, the signal strenght when you're using a wireless LAN card. (Not certain which cards it supports)

Sorry, but I don't think so.

There's no spares to be found anywhere.

Besides, the battery doors are one of the weak points on the 'fox, so if spares existed, those are what would have been used up first...

(One of them is damaged on mine, too)

Seems there is a lot of copying and pasting and inserting and deleting gooing on! Why invent the wheel once again? Try Rolf V's DigHandler, this program does it all with single key strokes: right arrow for next message, R for reply, S for store, D for delete. Can't be easier and nothing is missed!

From: Peter Rand Subject: More on XJMail

I am looking for an email application replacement for my Revo+. My one critism of the built-in email app, is the seemingly long time it takes from reading the headers to downloading the mails I want. My Revo is not my primary email machine, however I use it to access mail on the move through GPRS. What I want is to be able to download new mails to my machine as a single action without going through the hassle of downloading the headers. When I am travelling a copy of all my mails get left on the server. As such I can easily have emails in the thousands at anyone time, majority of which I have already read. Is there anyway to get the internal program to only download new mails (and skip the reading headers bit) or an alternative mail program that can do this?

Another related question, can we specify for mails to be downloaded without the attachments?

Thank you,

Koi Hin

Not sure just what you want to do, but I regularly backup an

encrypted (with password) Data file to my PC. I can then copy it to

my emulator where I can then open it using the password.

Re: Replacement Pens. I have some various colored plastic pens which

I use(d) with my Mako and never saw any screen scratches. The pen I

like the most is the one I use at home with my 5ive and 5mx. Its the

aluminum "Point 5" pen.

Re: White Letters On Keyboard. I bought my 5ive in November 1999 and

my 5mx in October 2000 (the keyboard was replaced in June 2001). I

suppose I don't use them as frequently at Itamar, but the letters on

both machines look just like new to me. Maybe because I use latex

gloves while eating pizza.  :-)

I didn't know mice used rubbers.  Sorry :-)

I'd better quit now before I get thrown off the digest.

BTW, My Mako has finally made it to Toronto, Canada, (seems to have

been held up in Customs!) for it's life-saving battery/PCB

operation. I'm hoping, wishing, praying for a good recovery.

As a bit of an aside, the current issue of PC Plus magazine (UK) come

with a full version of JawsPDF for Windows on the cover disk.  I gave

this a quick try and it certainly seems to work well, better then the

current 'print-to-pdf' tool I was using.  Convertion of a fairly

extremely well, in fact on a par with the full Distiller that I use at

<1) You can order required products from our internet shop (http://shop.psiloc.com) and select "Wire transfer" payment method or

2) You can send your credit card details to us via email (secure using PGP) or via fax.>

I've heard of PGP (I think it stands for "Pretty Good Privacy"?) and if I'm correct, does it encrypt an outgoing email and the recipient then un-encrypts it at the other end?  Presumably this can't be done from a Psion?

Subject: Colourising (/izing) icons

Hello All,

I was pondering the Extras bar of my netBook the other days (as one does...) and thinking "isn't it a shame that more authors/software houses haven't/didn't release their applications with colour icons for the Extras bar for us netBook/S7 users..." when it dawned on me that this is something that can be fixed retrospectively.  It's a fairly simple matter for someone with a little understanding of how EPOC works to generate replacement .aif files for applications which will replace the greyscale icons with colour ones.  Hence I set about doing this for some of my favourite apps.

Thus far I've created colour versions of icons for Macro5 (a dark yellow shade to the gears - similar to Pascal's web site), Tomeraider (red of course), Crypto, and SysBack.  I'll probably also colourise the icons for EBook, BusyView, and Porfolio in the fairly near future...

It occured to me that others might like copies of these and so I thought I'd ask the Digest first since there's a reasonable number of S7/netBook users (and maybe one or two netPad users) here.  Questions therefore:-

1) Any interest?

2) If so, any special requests?

If there's enough interest, I'll probably upload a zip file to my website and post the URL for download.

Morning All,

Calming, deep breathing is now in place having fumed at the earlier failure of my 5mx to powerup this morning. Doubly annoying this really as had just had unit's screen cable replaced by POS.

Simple symptoms are: no display, no sound, even tried to alter screen contrast to check if some power was getting through. Tried new batteries, mains power etc. All to no avail.

Have tried soft-reset - no joy.

Realise that hard reset is probably next move, though am reluctant to perform this due to some data loss. Am also uncertain as to how to perform a hard-reset anyway, so simple instructions would be welcome. As would be any other suggestions, thank you.

But when I fire up Opera and try to reach out into the internet, I get the laconic Psion knockback: Network Problem, which is interestingly circular because the network problem is that I am getting this message 'Network Problem' instead of being connected to whatever I wanted to connect to.

Using a Mac, running OS X, I am able to convert any document into a .PDF file (it's built into the OS).  They are then easily readable on my Mako, which runs PDF+.

The other day, I was helping a family member with their Windows based PC and noticed in the File menu of MS Word (I believe V. 2000 on W. XP

Home), that there was an option to Publish to .PDF.  If so, wouldn't this allow for complex Word files to be transferred to an EPOC device running PDF+ or possibly even the freeware PDF.

NOTE:  I may be totally wrong in thinking that I saw the Publish to .PDF file option in MS Word on a PC.  If so, accept my apologies and

ignorance towards the platform, as I personally refuse to use it.

Re.: Backup and restore - "but also means that "voluntary" deletions are preserved for evermore..."  No, not really. Voluntary deletions are preserved only in the archive folders and moved from the first to the second etc. each time you back-up and deleted after the last level of archives (choosen by the user in the Psiwin set-up) has been reached. I use only 3 levels, and can't remember ever to look back in these folders.

Answer to: Rolf Vonau

Re. superglue - Thanks for the warning. However, the stylus broke in the middle of the handle part and not at the bottom part, so the glued part has no contact at all with the screen.

Answer to: Rolf Brunsting

Re. Psion Dacom Gold Card - Thanks for your answer. After a lot of testing and moving cards and wires around I found out that the problem is in the "Euro adaptor" at the end of the short cable lead from the modem card. When pulling the connected cable out, in and out suddenly the modem comes to life. Now the problem is that this is the old type of Psion modem cards (not the "Global" ones) and the cables are out of production and not available anymore. So either I have to find someone or somewhere a cable or alternatively cut the wire at the adaptor end (the adaptor is the counterpart to put a RJ11 plug in) and attach a new adaptor part or another cable.

Question : Has anyone got a spare cable for the modem card or alternatively any bright ideas how to "operate" on the modem cable ?

Re. GPRS settings - The phone is a 6310i and the computer is a S7. Thanks in advance.

Well, I took delivery of my 4 in 1 PC card adaptor so I could back up my 9210 MMC to my S7 via the PC card.  I slotted in the MMC to the adaptor, put that into my "E" drive and got "disk not present".  I tried this a few times but had no luck.  I know my "E" drive is OK 'cos I use a CF (in a different adaptor) and the MMC is read fine on the 9210 so I can only guess the adaptor must be faulty.  The only thing is the MMC doesn't go in flush with the edge of the adaptor (it only goes in about half its length).  I don't want to force it but has anyone got a Dane-Elec 4 in 1 PC card adaptor and can tell me if this is normal i.e. should the MMC fit in flush or not?
