Subject: Colo(u)r icons again
Hello again all,
Judging by the immediate response I got (both on and off digest), there's a fair bit of interest in this... ;-)
I'm travelling just now (actually I'm at the 3GSM Congress in Cannes - which sounds exotic but IMO 'exotic' only applies when the temperature is above 5ēC!). Anyway I'll respond to all the points raised in the last digest in one message - apologies for not singling people out more.
>>>>
As well as those you mentioned, Symlink, Navigator, SaveMail, Mentor, ...
<<<<
I think I've got a copy of Navigator at home which I can use (when I get back next week) and I think I can get SaveMail and Mentor from the web. Symlink may be more difficult however - can you send me (off digest) a copy of the existing Symlink.aif file on your machine so I can convert it?
>>>>
please could u get my cobuild back to red from grey (lord know's what happened here),
& what the boody hell is that thing that tourmate uses for an icon? & how about a pale blue rmr zip box (by the way if anybody has that freeware add on splash screen thingy that WAS available somewhere ages ago for rmr zip, i'd appreciate a copy jn my mailbox) & a how about colour versions of all those essential disk utilites things & nswitcher & street & route & dcp & a conservative colour for stopwatch ...yes yes yes, please! i'm being greedy. but great idea. & please do share with us all how it's done. thanks, martin.
<<<<
Whew...! Okay, I don't have Cobuild or Stopwatch - can you send their respective .aif files (again, off digest). And I haven't even heard of 'Tourmate'... ;-) I do however already have RMRZip file + patch that Egon Widmer created some time ago (his website is since unavailable) so I'll add those to the file. Whilst on the subject of colour patch files, I also have the patch for SimCity so I'll add all that to the file too. EDU, nSwitcher, Street and Route I have so I'll work on them in due course (the Street and Route icons I have are the new TomTom 'hands' versions - not nearly as nice as the old icons if someone wants to send me those as alternatives). I don't have DCP but I guess I can find it. Re: sharing 'how it's done' - I will - but there may be a slight delay. I've suggested it as an article subject to Elizabeth at FoxPop. However, it'd be for publication probably at the beginning of April at the earliest as I'm currently finishing off a separate article for the March edition with her. Hope that doesn't disappoint too much - with luck I'll have generated a decent library of replacement .aif files by then!
>>>>
Re. Colourising (/izing) icons - Careful, this is an "open door" you just kicked in <G>. You asked for it, so here is my list : Route, Phoneman, The dialer, Crontab, SaveMail, Stopwatch, Editor, Freenote, Nightkeys, Monopoly and Chadis7. Alternatively explain us how you do it and we can all help, do some and send them to you for uploading.
<<<<
Yes, the flood gates are opening Itamar ;-). Bring on the water! Okay - your list: Route - done already, Phoneman - will do, The dialer - will do, Crontab - will do, SaveMail - will do, Stopwatch - will do, Editor - it's already available in colour (the small 'T' shows in red) - I can't remember exactly but maybe see Symbian's website for a colour version?, Freenote - will do, Nightkeys - suggestions for how these should be coloured please?, Monopoly - don't have - can you send me the .aif file?, Chadis7 - will do.
A few comments:-
1) As Itamar correctly noted, there's going to be a fair bit of demand and this'll take me a while to get through - please be patient with me. It probably only takes me about 15 minutes per icon (sometimes less, sometimes more - depends on the complexity of the image mainly) to do but of course that adds up and I've got a job, life, family, etc. (not necessarily in that order! <grin>).
2) I only need the .aif file to generate a colour version that'll work with your program. It'd be tempting to ask for the complete application - but not exactly honest - so please don't send it! You can find the .aif file for any given application (let's call it 'MyApp') in either c:\System\Apps\MyApp\ or d:\System\Apps\MyApp\ - depending upon whether you installed MyApp to the c: or d: drive. Just take a copy of the file - don't remove it or the program will stop working.
3) I've uploaded the initial version of the file to: http:\\www.pscience5.net\freeware\colour_icons.zip Currently it contains: BusyView, Collins EF, Crypto, EBook, EnRoute (aka Route), FileSwitch, FrotzS5, Macro5, Phrase, Porfolio, RMRZip (+ patch), SysBack, and TasMan. As I mentioned above, I'm travelling right now (until the middle of next week) so for the next couple of weeks I'll just upload an updated version of the file as and when I can and post the latest list of 'converted' icons here if that's okay with everyone. At some point later this month I'll generate a proper page on my website that anyone can access. For the time-being however, you guys get first dabs...
Ummm... Think that's about it for now.
Best regards,
Martin Guthrie

If only I'd been told!
My Revo is playing up only 6 months after reconditioning. I suspect
that it's the small charges that have caused the problem. Yet what's a fellow supposed to do when the Revo won't work out of its cradle?

Aleck,
Definately keep them apart - the Psion has a speaker with a magnet in it which will damage the data on your cards. On 2 occassions I have been on the tube in London and put the magentic coded train ticket in the same pocket as my Psion. The ticket has then refused to work in the automatic barriers.

Oscar,
You might try nConvert from http://www.neuon.com .
It is a shareware ($20 USD) utility that provides on-board conversion of many file formats to native EPOC. A .tiff converter is one of them (I think). It should be able to convert to native Sketch or .mbm files.
Just curious, are you using PDF+ or plain PDF? I haven't had any problems with PDF+.
Hope this helps.

Pedro,
From what you tell of the Revo cutting out at 80%, it sounds as if your machine's battery isn't properly calibrated. You might try letting it charge for about 6 1/2 hours until the battery icon in the toolbar stops animating. If you get no where with that, do a hard reset and connect and charge until the battery icon stops animating.
NOTE: The icon will continue to animate long after the battery gauge indicates 100%. You may also notice a jump to ~81% shortly after performing the hard reset. In my experiences, these are normal.
As for changing the batteries, some people have done it with success. I have read of people using 2 700mA NiMH Rayovac batteries (AAA). I can't offer any other advice but to say that when my time comes, I am going to change my own.
As for the fridge, it sounds somewhat risky to me. You may want to consider charging in a cool environment (such as a cold garage, etc.).
Hope this helps,
Brian

Dear Rolf,
You wrote:
>>The people who's Series 5(mx) screen cable hasn't failed have no reason to be dissatisfied with it.
I disagree. The screen cable on my unit hasn't broken but I am dissatisfied because I know that there is a fairly high chance that it will break, and I am conscious of this fact when using the machine. It has also influenced the way I use it in ways that I feel inconvenience me.
I modify my use of the machine to try to reduce the risk of the cable breaking, eg. by leaving the case open when at home, and minimising the number of times that I open and close the unit. I would much rather that there was no reason to doubt the robustness of the cable. In most instances it would be more convenient for me to put away the machine closed rather than open.
Although these measures may be over-cautious on my part, to me they are preferable to having to repair the unit within a year or two.
I didn't respond to the screen cable survey, because the way I have
been using my unit doesn't reflect the "real" wear and tear it would get if I weren't taking these precautions.

Ummm, you're right Rolf: for instance, I'am not dissatisfied, just p...ed: to have to replace a cable at this price - and then, because they are so fragile, a screen. And btw, not with the *cable*, but with the Psion-Team who let this happen, to be very precise. This being said, Psion is of course supercalifragilsitic! :-)

Just like Itamar I would expect for a machine in this price-class to last definitely *far* longer than one year. Otoh, even if it were so, what would
be the practical consequence for us? I'll go on liking the Psion as it is,
the ole mistress... and hope it'll last longer after the next 100 bucks'
worth of cable & screen plus postage minus lost data...

2 c about how I see this: I know what I can do and what I risk (although I
am non techie, just a profficient and occasionally investigative user - as I often need the knowledge professionally. I know, fi, that the .ini- files
are somewhat the equivalent of preference-files in the Mac. But I do not
know what the various files do in the various folders in the Psion System folder.
Rolf, I would be *very* thankful to you or anyone who would list the main
types of files and suffixes in the Psion System and on Z, and what their function is - even approximately and best-guess-wise. This would be very
useful and interesting to me. I am NOT going to blame anyone for whatever
harm I will do w. the knowledge...
This sort of info is readily available for the Mac OS and I often take the
risk of experimenting/advising: I always explain the danger, in most cases I have solved or at least identified the problem. Psion is mucho Mac-like:
this knowledge would be useful...

Janet and psionistas
I have a psion 5mx US model, bought in the US, and have had two screen cables replaced. The first lasted just over a year and the second about 18 months. I think that the second lasted longer because I have been careful to only open and close it when absolutely neccesary.
I have bought a MC218, which is sitting waiting to be used in a cupboard, as an insurance policy.
I also want to thank Itamar for the survery which made very interesting reading.

I prefer to to my Internet browsing offline, in order to cut down on telephone time. On my Apple Newton, I'd schedule the PDA to download a number of URLs in one go. I'd then read these pages at my leisure, and highlight links that I wanted to read in more detail. The next time I'd go online, the PDA would batch download all the links I wanted.
I miss this on the Psion platform - has anybody succeeded in a way to do batch downloads of URLs? As it is, I've almost completely stopped using the Series 7 & Opera for web-browsing - it's just to slow.
How could I download multiple web-pages in the shortest possible time? Grateful for any tips!

Aleck,
The reason for the warning is that the speaker in the Psion has a magnet.
Placing a magnet too close to the back of a credit card can demagnitize the
magnetic strip so the data can't be read by card readers and such. A wallet
that had the BACK of the Psion directly against the BACK of the credit cards
could be a problem but my experience is that even having the Psion near the
front of a credit card won't affect the magnetic strip. I've carried my 5mx
in a wallet with all my credit cards for about a year now and haven't had
any problems.

Re: Revo Batteries in the fridge
Pedro,
The fridge concept is that the thermal sensor in the Revo/Mako battery pack
prematurely overheats thus causing the charging to stop before the batteries
are actually full. By chargin the Revo/Mako in a cool environment, the
thermal sensor doesn't react so quickly. I can't say that I'd recommend
charging it in a refrigerator but doing so in a cool place like a garage
couldn't cause any harm and may help.

My problem is, that the display of my 5mx got broken. It is still possible to use the machine, but about 20 % of the display has gone bad.
The touch sensitive layer as well as the backlight are OK. What I would like to know is if it is possible to replace only the defective layer of the display (ie the one which has, what I believe is called, the liquid crystals).
Any experience? Thanks in advance.

Suggest that you look at Yan's excellent web site at
www.isbg00598.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk. for information on cards that are
compatible with the Netbook as well as a number of other Psion FAQs. The range
of modem cards is quite small, lots more choices of rLAN cards. I use 4
different brands of rLAN card all of which work & can be swapped around at

The range of rLAN cards maybe large it does not mean they will all operate

Have a look at the Nokia 6310i, which supports GPRS (and which I am using with GPRS to send this) or some of the other models by Nokia, Ericsson or Siemens. One phone to avoid is the Panasonic (GD87?) which does have a problem when used with a Psion. I've used my 6310i with GPRS on a 3c, Revo, S5 and 5mx, as well as various PCs.

I know there's been a fair bit of comment about this subject, but I am still having a lot ot trouble sending e-mail from any provider other than Compuserve. I have now set up 4 different free e-mail accounts with Dutch ISPs, and can not send mail from any of them; they all fail with the extremely helpful "Unknown problem" error. I've tried from both my Series 7 and 5mx, with no joy. I've tried "popping before sending", and that does not help; I have no problem opening any of the mailboxes, regardless of who I pohone up with, so I'm a bit stuck.
Do I need to alter any of the advanced mail settings (PPP extensions and the like), or does the problem lie elsewhere? Hanno did mention to me that I might need to change the modem init string to AT+MS=11, but if I do that, my modem won't respond (I'm using the Psion Travel Modem via IR).

Re.: Psion case and Credit Cards - I think that depends on how safe you keep your Psion. If it is secured with you at all times, no problem. If however you leave it lying on your desk at work or in your car when shopping, better keep them separate.
Answer to: Darryl Kempster
Re. Fax Service - I use the YAC service as well and I don't think they disconnect if not used half a year. I certainly did not receive a fax in the last half a year and the number is still active as I recently tried it out. The utmost just sent yourself a fax every half a year, not that costly to keep the option open.
Answer to: Sajid Jumaani
Re. netBook + GPRS - I use Vodaphone GPRS with my S7 and a Nokia 6310i. It does work and once you have got the right phone (I know the 8310 works too) ask here for the settings or get them from Mike's website http://www.mikemcc.net/ (I got mine from his website too). However, be aware that is is not as cheap as you might think but definitely a lot faster than GSM.
Answer to: Rolf Brunsting
Re. False Representation? - Of course you are right that my small research in this area of broken screencables is not scientific and cannot be taken as a proof. However, it is indicating a certain pattern and the size of the problem. A normal pattern of failure should be what, 0.5 % or less ? Surely it is well beyond that at unacceptable statistical levels.

This is strange, since the MC218, just as the S5mx has the OS in a ROM chip. Maybe the ROM is loose, or missing?
Take a look at the screws that holds the bottom in place. (One in the battery compartment, one in the CF compartment and the last in the Backup battery compartment.)
At least one of these screws is hidden by a 'warranty void' sticker that can't be removed without breaking it.
The ROM module is supposed to look almost like a small RAM module for a laptop.
If only the socket is there, you've been screwed...
If the module is there, I suggest removing and reseating it.
If there IS a module and it is firmly seated, what's written on it?

I'm not certain, but GPRS does use a lot of power, and the technician I was in contact with when I messed around with the FirstFone thought it used too much power, too. (He didn't have the exact specs available just then)
Anyway, it doesn't hurt to ask them.
As for compatible phones, just about any 'normal' GPRS phone with either an IRDa or Cable connection can be used.
Personally I'm using the Siemens M50 together with a cable(Siemens data cable, a nullmodem and the Psiwin lead)
I actually consider cable better than IRDa because I don't have to do that balancing act if there's no table handy.

About false representation and the screen cable...
Just thought I should mention that I'm the dude that noted down using a Siena, MC400 and a netBook, but no S5/S5mx...
(Yes, I really use all three of them :-)
I did reply to the Screencable request, though, because i used to use one...
I wonder what that does with the statistics, when one of the answers were from one outside of the 270 something group...

dear all,
just lately i've read tales of woe & strife in so many places from folk trying to register mbm view. so look, if somebody really wants it, u
can use my registered user name & passcode, i don't mind. just mail me & i'll pass 'em on, but you have to use my name cos it's connected to the code. mbm view should be on everybodies machine. & if u feel guilty about this, or it gets you all bent out of shape (perhaps you're a guardian reader), then donate a few quid to your favourite charity:

thanks to j. for sending me the rmrzip colour patch. good man! i couldn't google it cos all the links had died. anybody else who is

also big & belated thanks to all who responded to my cries for help (on & off list) re: os x & my s7; especially kate, klass, vlad, brian, thomas, simon & mark. i found a new sandisk usb reader in the sale basket of the japanese version of dixons (overpriced pirates, are they still trading?) for less than a fiver & a pc card c.f. reader for 500 yen (less than 3 quid) & now i'm a happy man.
you see, after 3 years (& 48 million quid wasted on wretched morse code speed 17th century dail-up fees), i can't recommend apple & os x & adsl highly enough.
here in japan yahoo adsl is now running at 12mb for about 15 quid a month with free connection & 3 months free! how's bt these days?? when

another thing, i enjoy reading this digest (& other email plain text save as files with freeware ebook on the rickety local train), but i'm kinda getting sick of reading the same boring farts posting 5 or 6 messages a day. how many bloody rolfs are there on this digest?? get

Hi
I sent an e-mail to asking for advice on where to send my MC218 for repair and an approximate quote on the price. I got a reply with a couple of phone numbers and an e-mail address where "We will then be able to talk you step by step with setting up your device..."
I don't bloody need help on setting up my device. I can probably teach them a thing or two! What I want to know is where to send a broken one.
I tried e-mailing them on which was the address given in the reply and my e-mail bounced. The host doesn't exist! The question remains. Where do I send my MC218 for repair? I don't want to waste money just yet on calling the phone numbers given as calling the UK during business hours from Ireland with a pay as you go card would probably cost more than the repair and is rather pointless if all I'll get is another kneejerk reply.

Yes they do. The large number of screen cables that fail reduce the value of the machines that have not yet failed. Personally, I would be very careful about bying a second hand S5 type machine as I would have no way of knowing the "mileage" on the machine and how soon it will fail. I am sure this reflects in the second hand value of Psion palmtops. Any user who has not yet experienced the problem will also be worrying about how soon his or her screen cable is going to fail and what they will do when it does fail.
Can we please hear from any user of an S5 type machine who is NOT worried about his screen cable?
> Nor is it a
> given that the people who's Series 5(mx) screen
> cable has failed are dissatisfied.
You must be joking! I am certainly very dissatisfied. A Psion palmtop is an expensive piece of kit. For that kind of money I expect better MTBF than two years! However, by the time my first cable failed I had invested too much in the platform and there weren't (and still aren't?) any viable alternatives on the market. Of course back when my first screen cable failed, I didn't realize that it was a normal occurrence. Now, four screen cables later, I can say that I might have reconsidered my decision to stay with the platform if I'd known back then what I know now..
Can we please hear from any user of an S5 type machine who is not dissattisfied even though his or her cable has failed?
The cable on my MC218 is now failing. That's the second time on that particular machine and my fourth screen cable failiure since I got my first S5 several years ago. I use my palmtop(s) several times a day and find that my screen cables last an average of around 18 months. The first cable on the MC218 went after 12 months, but that was a second hand machine which was 6 months old when I bought it.
> This won't give you the data that allows you come
> to any satisfactory conclusion as you have to
> collect data on *all* Series 5(mx) machines.
I do not know of anyone who uses a 100% sample as a basis for statistics where such large numbers are involved. A sample of the digest will probably show a slightly higher percentage of failure than average as our membership is biased towards power users. In a 100% sample you will also have to include people like my sister who bought a Psion and never took the time to learn to use it. Her Psion lay unused in a drawer until she sold it, so of course her screen cable did not fail.
This will be true of any product. If a car has a fault that appears after 20000km, a little old lady who only drives to church on Sundays will quite probably die of old age before her car exhibits the problem. Those who use the car as most cars are used, for commuting to work, taking the kids to school, driving on summer holidays etc. will probably experience the problem within the first couple of years. Those who buy the car and then take off on a 6 month tour of Europe may experience it within the first couple of months.
I don't know whether we have a case for "class action" against Psion, but I don't know of any other relatively expensive product in the computer market with such a high frequenciy of failures within the first two or three years.

The girlfriend (who still uses bits of paper and a pencil) hates the standard alarm on it though and I have to switch it off within the 1st 2 beeps or am in danger of seeing fly across the room, she has requested I go back to the soft bells that I used to have on my MC218, but have been unable to find any way of changing the standard alarm, do any of the other 7 know if this is possible. Also could anyone send me the bells as a file, so I could play with it.
I have just discovered in my draw an aluminium Point 5 pointer for the 5mx, I used with my MC218 If anybody would like it they are welcome to it, just drop me a e-mail.
I have dropped it down a flight of stairs, sat on it, knocked it off the car roof, and generally abused it but it just keeps on working, I love it.

Hi (Rolf),
Actually my ISP also has a WAP portal I can use (that's how I know the WAP browser works).
Since I don't own a mobile phone I had never seen WAP pages before and still know little about WAP. As far as I can gather it's pretty much a waste if you've got a Web browser and a Psion or better. It may be a bit quicker (and some websites are s-l-o-w) but it actually seems useless unless you *need* it.
One nice thing though - the Psion changes the access number to suit the browser you're using. Not difficult, I know, but well thought out.
Happy days,

This sounds like my problem but I don't understand it. Surely the adaptor is merely a pass-through device to connect whatever is in its bay to the PC card slot - it's whether then whatever is in that bay has the correct drivers that will decide whether the host device recognises it? In other words, ANY adaptor should allow the host device to see it PROVIDING whatever is inserted into the adaptor has the correct drivers. If so, the question is are Multimedia Cards supported by the S7 PC card slot? Has anyone successfully used a Multimedia Card with a S7 in this way?

That's easy to solve - as there's 0.67 Euro to the British Pound you simply multiply the data that comes in by 0.67 and the data that goes out by 1.49. <G>
<< Has anyone got a spare cable for the modem card or alternatively any bright ideas how to "operate" on the modem cable ? >>
Depends on whether this "Euro adaptor" is moulded on to the cable. In case it's not, and has a casing that consists of two shells that click shut, you might be able to pry it open and check for dry solder joints.

Questions like the one above tend not to get a high response as you rely on people's memory being triggered by a single name. It's much better to mention what this 'GlobeTrotter' is, its model number (when applicable), the functionality it has and who manufactures it. People who may not have direct experience with this GlobeTrotter can give you information for you to find out whether it does work with a netBook.

I'm familiar with Clive's words as I've recorded them in a database called NewsGroup Snippets. The date of the entry indicates that this was well before the release of the Mobile Connectivity Update 2.0.
<< To the best of my knowledge, installation of either Mobile Connectivity Update doesn't prevent the AT+FCLASS=? string from being sent. I have the GPRS update (MCU2.0) installed and the string is still present >>
I have MCU2.0 on my Series 5mx and MC218 but not the Series 7. I've since checked the behaviour of EPOC Release 5 with the two updates and the AT+FCLASS=? enquiry is used by plain ER5, ER5 + MCU1.1 and ER5 + MCU2.0.
<< As to why a modem shouldn't give an "error" response to an unsupported command, no-one is suggesting that it should do otherwise, but if it does respond with "ERROR" instead of "0", the modem is incompatible with a Psion >>
I wouldn't call it an incompatibility as there's no reason why an ER5 Psion shouldn't work with an old modem that doesn't support any of the fax classes. Faxing will be out of the question, of course, but data communication should work. That Psion's automatic verification script doesn't have an escape route when AT+FCLASS=? is replied by ERROR is more an oversight. It's a pity that it's not a plain text script we could edit and adapt.

Subject: Should (4 Rolf)
"the sentence you quote from manual says that the Series 5 *should* remain in good working order for many years rather that *will* remain in good working order."
Sure, but *should* here strongly implies that, for units handled according to the manual's guidelines, a failure will be *unlikely* to occur 'for many years' to come. *If* the large number of anecdotal screen-cable failure reports for the 5mx are any real indication of the actual numbers involved (that is: if they really are a smoking gun), and *if* Psion had actually *expected* such a high failure rate or similar (what with their long years of experience building very similar units) - then it *could* be argued that Psion was indeed making a false representation here. Only some sort of external audit or examination could tell us what the real failure rate for these units is and just what Psion knew to expect in terms of such a rate when they decided to state in the manual "When used according to the instructions in this manual, the Series 5 should remain in good working order for many years." It would also be useful to ascertain the failure rates of similar products from Psion's various competitors.
BTW, I was more interested in hearing what other Psioneers had to say than proving the point either way - which I reckon is impossible anyway. Still the large number of failure reports for the 5mx, especially when contrasted with the far fewer similar reports for other clamshell models, (Jornadas, Zauruses, HP LX's, etc.) is certainly worthy, IMHO, of a raised eyebrow or two.
