Subject: 5mx pro/OS question
I am very pleased with my 5mx pro.
In an earlier posting, I said that the install programme would only
work when the system was available on the compact flash. I now realise
this was wrong. Sometimes the machine refuses to install a third party
programme, telling me that the file is not there. the solution is a
soft reset.
I now have on the mac a folder which contains all the necessary .sis
files plus the Sys$rom.bin file. When I have to do a hard reset, I have
everything ready and waiting to be copied onto the compact flash.
Question: are there alternatives to the Sys$rom.bin for the 5mx pro.
Can it run under other available OS?

Subject: Computer shops in London + leaving epoc?
hi all
thank you very much for the quick response to my question re: pc shops in london. i really appreciate it as i am planning to buy a laptop tomorrow. there aren't much choices here in st. albans
i think to appreciate a netBook one still has to have a pc. as in my case i cannot unzip an epoc program from my netBook. i have to have a pc to unzip a file and transfer it to nB. also nB is not compatible with a GlobeTrotter.
i am considering of selling my month old nB (with a Psion32mb dimm uprade, OSv156&158 in Psion badge CF disks) once i get hold of a laptop. i just couldn't find a use for it as i still have my classic s5 (had it since 1998 no cable probs) which i can use in daylight. sadly i am waiting for an nB semirigid case for nB from Proporta +a screen protector. i can maybe throw in a Psion travel modem GSM.
the only thing that keeps me from having HPipaq with a laptop is that i feel like traitor/deserter abandoning psion for another platform.
kind regards
saj

Subject: OS2 / Screen Cables / Shetland / Speed / Connecting phone to PDA
Hi All
Thanks for the advice on OS2 that has come from a number of sources. I believe that I might have found someone with a solution.
The screen cable debate goes on relentlessly as well as the interpretation of the results of the survey. I didn't answer the survey, but as a matter of interest I have owned 1 Psion5 and 3 MC218s. None have ever failed with screen cable problems. In fact none of the MC218s have ever had a problem. The 5 did have 4 motherboards though within the 3 year extended warranty period. I am very gentle with my PDAs. They have always been carried in a hard case, but they do tend to be used sporadically for a few weeks and then constantly for weeks.
A bit of a long shot I know, but does anyone on this list live on Shetland, or has lived there or worked there recently? If so can you contact me off list? I just want to know something about attitudes towards employing 'foreigners' (i.e. English people d;-)> )
I hate to see suffering. As much as I loved my little dog, she was suffering so much that I had the vet give her the needle. I would hate to see a pedestrian that I have hit suffer so I have decided to make sure that I hit them at 50mph as I am fairly sure this should make sure that 100% of them are killed. Alternatively if I have hit them at less than that I will of course be gracious enough to reverse over them!
John was talking about connecting a 6310i to his Psion. Just because the leads fit, don't run away with the idea that this will work. I tried the same with a Nokia NK402 (an Orange 5110?) some years ago and it wouldn't work. I was told that this was due to a voltage issue. Sounds a bit odd to me, but he was convinced that he was right. I have still got the cable somewhere but I haven't tried it with either the 6210 or 6310i that I own. As far as null modems are concerned, why not get a better solution. I have a null modem converter that is basically almost 2 x 9 pin connectors back to back. I suppose that it is about 3" in length. No idea what that is in metric measurements; probably 2.7 kms, 7 furlongs, eight shillings and tuppence three farthings! I am not aware of a Psion to phone cable, but you could always try Chris Archer at www.serialleads.co.uk I suspect that he wont thank me for that!

REMINDER : Please do take my message of last digest into account and stop the personal messages about morality and the law, etc. Surely there are many digests and forums to discuss these matters ? Let's try and keep it to the "ins and outs" of our Psions. Thank you.
Answer to: Peter
Re.: Any recommendations? - If you were happy with your 7110, I would advise you to switch to the 6310i. It is a vey succesfull phone, strong and reliable, has got GPRS as well as bluetooth. However, from where do you get a rumour about a new 5MX ? AFAIK that is just wishful thinking, but please prove the digest we are all wrong .... ?!!
Answer to: Vlad Kuzba
Re. Screen Cable Failure - I am sorry to hear your screen is broken. My advice to anyone is just to use your Psion with reasonable care like you do with any other piece of electronical equipment. Expect something to go wrong over time and have it repaired as long as you think it is worth your money. You drive a car knowing that something could go wrong as well beyond the normal ware and tare, but do you ever drive less to avoid it ? (I bought a Mercedes E220 3 years ago and the gearbox broke within 3 weeks ...).

Answer to RISCOS/ArchiveOnLine
> Just out of interest, EPOC digest has talked about the new SonyEricsson P800. I have looked at the spec and it is an impressive piece of kit. As it runs Symbian v7.0, does this allow any 'better' connectivity and software compatibility with the 5mx/EPOC 5. Especially with regards to syncing with Agenda. Also, as this phone is not yet released by Orange, what problems or limitations using an Orange SIM card with the handset? <
Hi Peter,
It certainly is an impressive phone. Although it runs Symbian like Psion it's not compatible with the Psion range, except for the standard vCard and vCal exchange. You can't sync Agenda directly, but with Outlook or Lotus Notes as an intermedia you can do it.
I also have Orange and in Denmark there are no problems or limitations. I have full GPRS on WAP, MMS and Internet. It also works in conjunction with my Psion. What more can one possible want? <BG>

Hi Tim,
No the software for Nokia 92xx doesn't work on a Psion and you can't make it work just like that. It must be rewritten and recompiled in order to work.

Saj,
Also at Warren Street there's PC World, and the name of the reseller close to Tottenham Court Rd underground, on the corner of Gower Street is Morgan.
If you're walking down Tottenham Court Road from Warren Street, most of the computer shops are on the left hand side, with a few on the right.
Good luck.
All the best,

As mentioned previously, it's on the passenger seat and secured by the passenger safety belt. Reason is that I don't check the Series 7 while driving, only when I'm stationary.

Subject: Re: Speed cameras
Dear Toby,
<< The whole point of speed limits is to minimise the chance of death from collision isn't it? >>
I don't think so because Dutch statistics show year after year that the roads with the lowest number of deaths and injuries per passenger mile are the motorways. I understand that this is also true in Britain, Germany and other European countries.
<< If you hit someone at 40 mph they will almost certainly be dead ... >>
Not when the person in question is travelling at a speed of 39.5 mph. What counts is the speed difference as well as the mass of parties involved. A 40-ton truck hitting a small and light Ford Ka will have a different effect compared to two Ford Ka's hitting each other. It's thus logical that there's a different speed limit in the inner cities than there is on motorways, given the difference in traffic composition.
<< I am not around when you are hurtling towards a speed limit zone and checking your Psion! >>
Well, I prefer not be around when you cross the road while having eyes for the pretty girl across the road rather than the traffic on the road.

Dear Peter,
<< Little thought #1 - Would it be useful for all if someone wrote a little app that ran in the background counting the number of times a unit is opened, that way some statistical evidence can be gotten to prove or disprove the rights and wrongs of our disgruntlement? >>
Opening the Series 5(mx) triggers a switch that turns the Psion on when instructed to do so. You could therefore create an application that logs each time you switch the Psion on. Problem is, you can also switch the Psion on manually when it's already open but off. Meaning you can get an idea of the number of times the Series 5(mx) is used, not on the number of times it's opened. Still, such the log supplies additional background information that will be useful.

Sure you're making sense. You'd like somebody to smuggle out the patch and distribute it. That this can have severe legal and financial repercussions for Zenobyte appears not to matter to you. You have the patch - you can play Monopoly full screen on a Series 7 or netBook - and "sod all".

Subject: Re: False Representation?
Dear Stephen,
<< Rolf, that is not a fair analogy... >>
Don't complain to me as I addressed an analogy previously introduced by others. The car may not always be the right 'vehicle' for comparisons but it's a suitable one here. You mention that it's known car parts wear out, indicating you picked up what I wanted to say. People are familiar with it because a car isn't technologically outdated and economically obsolete as quickly as a computer. Many people don't have the experience of replacing worn out computer components because the computer's already gone before that time. They don't have the same mental picture of computer hardware reliability as they have of cars and react differently when a computer part does fail.
As for periodic maintenance, the company I work for manufactures data communication equipment that runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year and expected to be in service for a period of 10 years. We use cooling fans of the same type as used in computers. Difference is that we mention in our manuals that the cooling fans need to be replaced at regular intervals. And there are tables in the manual that list the fan type(s), ambient temperature and the corresponding replacement interval. Something you won't find in the average computer manual as cooling fan replacement is considered to be incidental maintenance.
<< Wear-and-tear-parts often give some warning of impending failure or fail gracefully >>
Well, a hard disk starts to get bad data blocks and the first indicator of a dying screen cable are stripes on the display. Both are a nuisance, but you can continue to use the hard disk and Psion for some time before it's over-and-out.
<< There was no expectation of failure. >>
I don't walk into a dealership with the expectation that the car, washing machine or computer I buy will fail after a few months. Nobody does. Thing is, that the chance of an early failure is not zero. Something to keep in the back of your mind.
<< If the transmission of your car blew up after fifteen months I think you would be put out, and understandably so... >>
This isn't a discussion on how upset, angered or furious people are entitled to be when something breaks.
<< Though I have no statistics to prove it, I believe that a vast majority of 5mx repairs are for the screen cable >>
There we have the crucial point - you don't know whether what you say is true but are still saying it.
<< Based on my _personal_ experience the 5mx screen cable is a weak point at best, a design flaw at worst. Psion will not admit that, of course, as that would leave them liable >>
The problem here is that Psion is bound by rules and regulations on what it can say about its products. When challenged, it's Psion that has to support what it says by supplying the evidence. While you, as a consumer, take all the freedom to say what you want to say about Psion's products. I don't think that's right. I think everybody has to support what (s)he says, including the consumer. An "I believe that..." is not sufficient.

Dear Mark.
<< ... Now this is moral behaviour and I would sleep at night - unless imminent legal prosecution were coming ;-) - I accept that it might upset sections of society and is probably if not definitely breaking the law ... >>
It's fine that there's discussion on this subject, even when the final result is the agreement to disagree. The crunch comes when shareware applications are offered complete with registration codes by somebody who isn't the developer nor an official distributor. The person in question will not have any problems with this as (s)he considers it to be the right thing to do. And I'm sure that a number of Digest subscribers have no problems accepting the offer as they are of the same opinion. Question is - how are people who are (strongly) opposed to such distributions expected to react?
When you think that these people will only be upset then -- think again. The logical step for these people, based on their moral persuasion, is to attempt to stop such distributions. As they currently have the law behind them they can report the people involved with these distributions to the relevant authorities. Meaning that Digest subscribers can be prosecuted and fined for software piracy and have their ISP services removed. The Digest itself can effected as the ISPs through which it is distributed may not like it that their services are used to 'advertise' such distributions.
Now - guess who'll be the bad guy/gal when Digest members are prosecuted and Digest publication is disturbed. I'm quite sure it won't be the person who's behind the distribution. It will be the person who attempts to stop it.
