Hi,

Itamar wrote:

You bought the wrong car: a Mercedes. I drive the same Toyota already for 15 years. Before that I lived in Curacao and as long as  worked there, I used a Toyota without any problems.

Personally I would be much happier when I had never heard the name Psion, it's a bad piece of work and Psion has deceived its cusomers for many years.

Speaking of bad quality: I use six CF-cards between my Psion and my digital camera.

Two of these are corrupt and both were bought at Proporta. The first one I returned  as they said to be willing to replace it. I got the same card back (Just thrown in an enveloppe, without any box) and it was still corrupt.

A quick format works, but the cards can only be used for 15% and 48% resp.

I tried several ways of formatting, but was never able to overcome the problem.

Maybe someone has solution ?

N.B. Currently I can buy Taiwanese CF-cards here in Indonesia, with a lifelong garantee, as long as the seal is not broken. (128Mb for Euro 40,-)

Have fun,

"you should NOT keep your e-mails on D if you use rechargable batteries.

The reason is that rechargeables can drop very quickly below the voltage needed to write to the CF when the Psion is using a lot of power for the RS-232 or IR-port. If this happens while you're online receiving e-mail, you WILL get a corrupted index file and loose access to ALL your e-mails. It's happened to me twice."

Thanks for sharing your experience, Owen. I was considering moving the message store to the CF -- now I won't! :)

"I switched from a Revo+ to a brand new 5mx not long ago, about a month or so. Having heard about the screen cable failure problem I was determined to open/close my machine only when REALLY needed. Well, so it happened - I saved my cable but ended up with a broken screen. Instead of a € 50 worth of repair I will have to pay more than € 200. Nice, isn't it? SAVE YOUR CABLES, IT IS DEFITELY WORTH THE MONEY!!!"

Very *sorry* to hear that, Vlad!! You've made an excellent point -- keeping the unit open *definitely* increases risk to the screen itself. BTW, if you're going to be keeping the 5mx closed whenever possible from now on, you might want to consider purchasing a hardcase to further protect the fragile screen.

Answer to: Saj Jumaani

Re.: leaving epoc? - Nobody should feel a "traitor" for leaving EPOC machines. First of all they are not produced anymore so in the end we will all face the same moment. Secondly in the end it is just a tool. If the tool does not work for you anymore, you find yourself another or a better tool that does work for you. Don't feel bad !

No-one ever answered about how to use the S7 in the car with a GPS while driving. Did anyone improvise a S7 stand or has anyone got another bright idea (the S7 screen being vastly superior over the 5MX) ?

Hi folks,

I acquired an S7 on Ebay, and find it extemely satisfying to use, particularly with regard to the screen, which seems enormous compared to my 5mx!

Thanks indeed to Martin Guthrie for the colour icons, though I'm not sure what one is to do with Comms.aif?

To Jon Welford (>):

>Re PiBeam does version 1.00 work with the S7 as 1.10 >causes problems.

I tried v1.30 first, and it caused continual hard resets.  I had written for a code for the S7 (it is UID related), and was given one.  One wonders why they didn't tell me that 1.30 is not compatible with the machine! I uninstalled

1.30 and installed 1.10 instead, and the latter works.  However, I don't have it permanently set in Control Panel as the default IR driver: I just open the app when I want to use it. (I did try the Control Panel though, just to see, and it *did* install.)

To Saj Jumaani  leaving epoc?

<<<<i think to appreciate a netBook one still has to have a pc. as in my case i cannot  unzip  an epoc program from my netBook. i have to have a pc to unzip a file and transfer it to nB<<<<

Re

Sad to read that ; nB precisely does any "serious" work and can even deliver MStype files (Word, excell , even powerpoint with Presentation and csv Access with nConvert or Xconvert).

The only missing is "multimedia" video and Hifi stereo sound.

Of course you can zip and unzip on nB alone There are on the net, a least 5 soft to do that : Navigator; RmrZip....even a java ziper.; and nConvert does convert zip and email in one run !

Now Saj, how many £$ do you ask  for your nB?

Perceptions and projections will abound but essentially each person would have the experience of being good themselves and in an enlightened world would see the perceived "enemy" in the same light as they percieve their own bhaviour and thus all would be well - at least thats the theory :-)

In this current situation, it would be good if those interested in the program - or an individual to represent them -  could get guidance from the Authours family as to how they would like this matter resolved.

Kind regards

But you CAN get zip file utilities for Epoc, I believe there is one called Rmrzip for starters...

Have you got any experience with connecting a Psion with OS/2 through IR? Also have you ever succeeded in synchronizing Psion with Lotus Organizer for OS/2? I have tried many times, but to no avail.

To: Itamar Engelsman

Sure I try to be as careful as possible. But some accidents just seem to be unavoidable. :-(

>do you ever drive less to avoid it ?

Well I must say I don't drive if I don't have to, as I just seem to be the "bad-lucked" one. I bought a new Renault Megane on 24 November and had an accident on 31 December (I don't drink before or when I drive! I just went for my mother-in-law :-)) I bought a 5mx in early January and the display got broken in early February....

Have a nice day

BTW, I meant to add yesterday that I also put a copy of Comms.aif in the Colour Icons file.  Whilst of course it's in colour on the latest builds on netBooks, it's in b/w on S7's...  I think it's a long shot but someone might like trying to put the file into C:\System\Apps\Comms\ just to see if it updates the icon on the Extras bar on a Series 7.  I say 'a long shot' because - IIRC - I think that EPOC prioritises in reverse order (i.e. Z, E, D, C) when it comes to looking at apps.   Of course, it might be the other way around - I can't really remember...!  :-)

Can someone let me know?  Thx.

Martin Guthrie

Subject: 5 vs 5mx keys, Malaybook

I bought a new 5mx last year to replace my 5. I too have noticed the keys are far 'stickier' than the 5s. It's pretty frustrating that this is the case - typing is far slower and error prone. The space bar sometimes doesn't even register if you hit it off centre. I was at one point contemplating a keyboard transplant to remedy the problem, too!

Does anyone have any experience with those cheapy netbooks called Malaybooks? They seem good value. Is the offer too good to be true? Maybe there really is a netbook 2 round the corner after all!

Andy.

My two year old Netbook has ceased to shut off when I close it. I assume the switch has given way, much like the one on the Series 5 which has been discussed in the digest. Anybody had the same experience?

Subject: leaving epoc?

Saj:

It's sad to hear that you have decided to leave the platform and epoc behind. It might be that I am a "power" user. Of course, the software has some shortcoming or lacks features, but that is mostly because the software evolved or was originally designed for a palmtop computer. The hardware itself I find wonderful.

By way of example when I lost my office (and laptop) at the World Trade Center, I managed to run my practice out of the Netbook while we set up the office anew. Wordprocessing, databases, fax sending and receiving, web browsing, e-mail, printing, etc, I was able to do from home. I had a full copy of my files and e-mails because when I travel I synchronize my Lotus Organizer with data and contacts and I copy all my e-mails using the e-warehouse software. I also copy all my client files and then just synchronize them to keep them up to date. The little netbook is then a powerhouse, light wonderful to travel with and lets me do what I want to do.

Recently, my office has set up VNC access and the epoc VNC client offered by IMHOTEK runs beautifully and allows me to control my office PC remotely (I could never get Citrix to work though) via a high speed internet connection.

Having said all those wonderful things, I do have to say that it is at times frustrating not being able to handle more complex documents, being a lawyer and not having a Wordperfect converter (or the newer versions of Excel) available is a handicap.

Cheers

Has anybody had any experiences with linking the Netbook to a wireless lan? What wireless cards would you recommend? I am trying to set up a wireless network at home (baby will be due soon to occupy what is now my home office and I am looking for alternatives to pipe in high speed access).

I just noticed that some formatting is lost when printing with Pdf Printer, specifically bold and italic variations of the fonts. I could not find an option within the software to allow this. Are you aware of why this might be the case? BTW, I have the registered version, so it should not be a matter of a "striped down version".

With all the recent discussion about the Series 5 screen cable failure, Is it common for the Series 7 / Netbook to suffer the same malady (after all it is also a flat cable that is constantly opened and closed)
