Subject: 3MX
Hi all
Seeing Owen talk about having bought an MX (assume 3mx) for 200 Euros has reminded me that I picked one up recently that I thought that I could pass on. The bloke that owned it had been bought it as a gift. He had a PC at work and at home. He entered the birthdays that he needed to remember into the 3mx, then didn't see any further point in it. So he put it away in a cupboard for the batteries to go flat. It is absolutely as new and includes the original packaging, user guide and advertising bumpf. I will even throw in a full set of new batteries. Only 70 ukp delivered to anywhere in the UK. Any interest from the list. First come, first served!

Exactly what I was going to suggest. We need someone who a) has contact
details for the author's family, and b) can speak Dutch. I'd propose
suggesting the following options/alternative requests to them:-
1) That they resurrect his old web site (with appropriate comments) and
start 'selling' new registrations again. I doubt whether any new
development would be an option for them.
2) That they pass the program code and/or registration ability over to a
3rd party shareware house (RMRSoft perhaps?). Normal percentage going
back to the family or his estate of course.
3) That they pass the program code and/or registration ability over to a
3rd party freeware house (I'd suggest Freepoc - but then I'm biased of
couse - although I believe I can speak on their behalf in this respect)
for freeware distribution. Possibly a 'memorial' to the author...
Personally, I doubt whether option 1) is really an option for them (depending upon their technical ability) - as I doubt whether their is
sufficient market left to warrant the effort. Option 2) is certainly
valid - although again I doubt if there's much money to be made from it (we're a minority of extremists in the Digest!).
Rolf, did you say that you'd had contact with them at some point?

As was already mentioned, you CAN unzip files on your netBook. I use
RMRZip (www.rmrsoft.com) on a daily basis to zip and unzip files on
mine. I can also vouce that Navigator works perfectly in this respect
too. And I know there are other 3rd party programs that also work. In
fact, I believe that there's a freeware program that unzips (only)
too...

Hi everyone...
Thanks to all of you for telling me where the PC shops in London are.
You're all great psioneers!
RISCO: thanks! I avoided taking the central line to totenham c rd. 'twas
still close when I went.
I have downloaded the rmrzip from the net before, but won't open I
thought it wasn't supported as the icon was that of "word" with a
question mark on it.
BTW the laptop I got is a brand new Sony Vaio PCG-GRV516G 16" P4 2.4Ghz
512RAM (originally 215, had it upgraded as RAM was half price) 30Gb Win
XP & MS Off Pro.
When I transferred the rmrzip to the laptop for unzipping I was surprise
to have found out that it was immediately recognized/unzipped by WinXP.
Now it resides in the nB.
I am still having second thoughts about selling my nB. Planning to sell
it for Ģ600. no screen scratches (a little over a month old). Includes
the OS 156 & 158 (thanks to Julie Campbell!) both OS are in 2 separate
Psion badge CF disks, semi-rigid nB case (from Proporta - am waiting for
the delivery), screen plastic protector, Dane-Elec CF adapter, original
Psion 32mbDIMM upgraded (thanks to Steve Hodgson for the tips in
inserting the ram).
I do prefer it to sell to someone in UK as it is easier to sort out if
buyers will change their minds. (or are being naughty)

Hi Itamar
I used to use my netBook in my Ford Focus. In my case, velcro was the answer. I attached strips along the bottom of the netBook (the hairy side of the velcro) and put the hooks side on the dashboard. The Focus has a fairly flat expanse where the netBook could sit happily.
I used 12mm wide velcro. 3 strips. One parallel to the spine, and two laterally along the flanks underneath. Two small snips allow you to bend the strips so they follow the lines of the netBook's underside.
This method never failed, no unexpected movements even with my erratic driving.
You can buy power cables/cigarette-lighter adapters and Garmin cables all over the net. I think I got mine from a 'pFranc' in Wallonie (Belgium).
BTW: My LPWS software is on-ice as you probably guessed. I hope to revive if I get a new Symbian machine sometime (perhaps the 9210).
Cheers
Russell

Manuel, could you give me/us more detailed of this? I've used the 5series off and on for a couple years, but mostly as a notepad. Am impressed that many on this list use it as the main or only computer. I just received a net(M)Book and am trying to get past the "it's just a larger notepad" thought. Your msg captured my attention. How did you do this? What were the problems? How big is your CF? How much RAM? What is the e-warehouse software? I use Outlook Express on my PC and find the individule saving of emails to PC HD then copying to the Psion a pain. I keep looking for a (free) PC email program that will let me save emails to .TXT files in a group.
>>By way of example when I lost my office (and laptop) at the World Trade Center, I managed to run my practice out of the Netbook while we set up the office anew. Wordprocessing, databases, fax sending and receiving, web browsing, e-mail, printing, etc, I was able to do from home. I had a full copy of my files and e-mails because when I travel I synchronize my Lotus Organizer with data and contacts and I copy all my e-mails using the e-warehouse software. I also copy all my client files and then just synchronize them to keep them up to date. The little netbook is then a powerhouse, light wonderful to travel with and lets me do what I want to do.<<

It has always been a comfort to me that if my p.c. goes down for whatever reason, my Psion (Revo+) can manage virtually everything I do day to day with a computer, though mercifully I have never experienced anything like the horrors of 9/11 and never want to.

I suggest you have a look at TomeRaider. There are several dictionaries and encyclopaediae available in TomeRaider format. I seem to remember that the Oxford English Dictionary is one of them. I may even have it somewhere. The TomeRaider application for Psions is Shareware. I can't remember the price, but it isn't expensive. Once you have the application, all TomeRaider files are free.
I also think I've seen the Oxford dictionaries for sale in another format for Psions.
The Psion EPOC machines have been around for several years, and the list of applications for them is very long. Rather than trying to get a Nokia application to work on a Psion (it never will), I suggest you check if the application already exists for the Psion. In most cases it probably does.

Recently I have been experiencing some rather strange behavior with Psiwin. Whenever I want to transfer and convert Wordperfect files from my Windows 2000 machine over to the Psion. IF I select a group of files to be copied and converted some of them (and in no particular order) or sometimes a single Wordperfect file is simply copied to the Psion without doing the conversion. If I then try to copy and convert the file again, Psiwin assumes that it only has to be copied and does not even display the option screen. I admit I have to do a lot more testing to try to discern a pattern, but has anybody experienced this before?

Give it a bit of extra time, Itamar. Many e-mail packages send and retrieve e-mails in a single session. Your request can therefore have been received at the same time a message you find irritating was sent out. It's also possible for people to be away for some days, retrieving a number of EPOC Digests in one go. It's not a given that they will read all of them immediately.
As for "personal messages about morality and the law", this subject is bound to crop up again and again when people post messages like "I've got applications X, Y and Z complete with registration codes - come and get them" on the Digest. You can ask Digesteers to respect other Digesteers' views and opinions on software distribution or copyrights. You can't ask Digesteers to remain silent when they see what they abhor, software piracy, being practised right in front of their eyes on the Digest.

The guy you talked to may have been convinced but he still was wrong. The Orange nk402, an OEM version of the Nokia 5146 as sold by One2One at that time, didn't have an integrated GSM data adapter or 'modem'. The nk402 relied on an external GSM data adapter and the majority were supplied in the form of a PC-Card, including the Psion Dacom Gold Cards. Alternative solutions for Psion owners were the GSM-Nota Data Terminal Adapter cable by the French company ARN (Series 3c/3mx and Series 5/5mx) and the first series of Psion's own 56k Infrared Travel Modem (Series 5/5mx).
<< I have still got the cable somewhere but I haven't tried it with either the 6210 or 6310i that I own >>
You don't need to as the cable for the nk402 was the Nokia DAU-9P while that for the 6210, 6310 and 6310i is the Nokia DLR-3P.

There are several tools to zip and unzip file for EPOC. The one I'm using is RMRZip which can be found of the website of RMR Software (www.rmrsoft.co.uk). As for the GlobeTrotter card, why don't you look for an alternative rather than buying a completely new laptop. You won't get for your netBook (plus extras) what you paid for it so that there's a good chance you have to spend some extra money anyway.

It's the first case of broken switch I've heard about on S7/netBook...
You should be able to see the switch as a small pin sticking up through a hole behind the righthand hinge.
Is that still visible?

I haven't tried VNC(on EPOC), but I had no problems running the Citrix client...
Unfortunately, my boss don't want to give me dial-in access to the network, so I deleted the software.
It worked OK when I connected it through MochaPPP and my PC, but hearing the winNT 'logon chime' issuing from the speaker was plain awful...
The biggest problem when setting up the Citrix connection is that you must know the server name, not just the application name.
(And the IP address to a DNS server doesn't hurt either)

Didn't you just write that you had VNC, and that you could remote control your PC?
I'd say you have all the tools you need...

Have you tried changeing the font?

> With all the recent discussion about the Series 5 screen cable failure,
> Is it common for the Series 7 / Netbook to suffer the same malady
> (after all it is also a flat cable that is constantly opened and closed)
Haven't heard about it failing...
On the S7/netBook it's a straight cable WITHOUT holes along the edges, so there's no inherent weak points.
Also, the cable isn't bent as tightly as on a S5/S5mx.
Funny thing that...
I just started thinking back, and realised that the first laptop I found a broken flat cable in was a Compaq 486 model.
There the design was a short straight piece, then a tightly wound spiral(to fit inside one of the hinges), before a long straight piece to match up with the edge of the LCD. This cable broke at the edge of the spiral. (And was a bitch to replace)
After that, there was a few Pentiums and more 'modern' laptops and notebooks with similar breaks, until a DELL (about 200MHz) where the hinges cracked. (The metal didn't go further than about 1/2" beyond the hinge pin so the plastic got all the stress)
After seeing the crappy design I told my boss that I wouldn't touch any of those machines, and we started buying IBM's instead....
Today, it seems like most laptops are free from screen cable failures, but the hinges often fail. I've also seen a few screens that have been broken when the user closed the machine too quickly. (The screen assembly is so weak that if the hinges are tight, the whole crap bends and the screen shatters)
Another problem is the 'expansion connector' on them...
Particularly on Toshiba and Compaq these seems flimsy and often gets damaged. (usually only a few pins are mashed up, but that's enough)
And you can't replace them either. Not only are they impossible to buy, but they're often 150 - 250 pins soldered directly onto the motherboard. (We have a whole stack of older laptops with broken connectors that was barely out of warranty, but can't be repaired because the manufacturer no longer has replacement motherboards)
What really worries me, though, is that we never have more than 20 or 30 users with laptops at any given time, but still there seems like there's at least one that's broken at any given time...
:-)
