hi sheryl...
same thing happened to me a week after i got my nB... forgot what kind of glue i used... but what i did was i placed the glue inside a syringe (use the smallest available - it's called insulin or tuberculin syringe it has a very tiny needle tip) and "injected" it underneath the leather where the gap is. you normally have to press for a few minutes the area where you have applied glue. goodluck.

thanks a lot for the advice!
hi everyone...

Ah yes, but one of the functions of this thing is a DVD player. Someone told me that USB 1.1 is too slow for playing back DVD movies on a PC.

Thanks. It appears that I do have USB 1.1 then. Can anyone recommend a PCMCIA to USB 2.0 adapter?
The item I'm interested in buying is the new Philips Jackrabbit combined DVD player, MP3 CD-player, DVD-ROM and CD writer. It can be used standalone with a TV or with just phones or a stereo system for music or be connected by USB to the PC to use as a DVD-ROM and CD writer.

The JackRabbit does have Video Out, so I suppose that if my USB is too slow for playing back movies on the PC, I may be able to use the Video In connector on my USB TV tuner to get the movies onto the PC screen? Not sure if that makes sense as looks to me like a detour for the same signal, but the TV tuner works fine on my USB port (except that the sound is a fraction of a second ahead of the picture which makes politicians and TV presenters look even more stupid than usual...)

Nothing!
These cables have the Honda connector that fits into the RS232 on your Psion on one end and a 9-pin female D connector to fit a PC _PLUS_ a socket for the power supply at the other end.
You connect your Psion power supply to the socket on the PC end of the cable instead of to the side of the Psion. The power still comes from the power supply, so it doesn't need to be connected to a PC. Just leave the 9pin plug dangling.

Julie Wills,
<<If I have to try a hard reset I will, but I'd rather try anything else first, as it's a week since I last backed up >>
I had a similar problem recently. My 5mx just went dead. I tried soft reset and a hard reset and no good. So I sent it in for repair. They sent it back saying they had reset the machine and put new batteries in it. All of this for $150. I was not a happy camper and will probably let that outfit in Canada do my repair work from now on (they are currently upgrading the batteries on my two Makos).
The moral of my story (for me) is, the next time I feel I have to do a hard reset, all batteries come out overnight after trying a hard reset before I give up.

Hi Michael,

The Monopoly icon will of course be in colour in the large zoom level, but will the revert to monochrome in the middle and small zoom level.
Now Martin, isn't that a job for you? <BG>
<<<<
Heh, heh - well, I've avoided doing it for three reasons so far:-
1) Because I needed to prioritise what I want to do and I figured it'd be best to provide colour for existing icons as they are before worrying about other issues.
2) Because as a rule I don't really want to interfere any more than I have to with the authors' 'artwork'. Adding extra bitmaps to their original might perhaps arguably be construed as copyright interference (of course, adding colour to their bitmaps might perhaps be construed as the same - but let's not complicate things!).
3) Because it's hard. ;-) Well, in some cases anyway. Some icons are generated by intelligent bitmap scaling from a large image. Colouring these is usually hard enough as it is. Generating smaller versions without the original artwork is nigh near impossible! And as for colouring these smaller versions...

I guess this might mean the GPS cannot receive data from PSiNMEA. Try to look whether you can switch the interface of the GPS from NMEA to Data or to both. Look under Program>settings and see if you can add your GPSs communication-protocol to, or select it from, the list. I have an eTrex and it functions, It's just that I couldn't find any use for PsiNMEA so far... :-)

I don't know whether this makes sense, but might a *complete* null-modem (ie, not leaving any pins out) adapter in the middle be the solution?
> You really have to demonstrate that (a) the screen cable isn't up to the job > (b) that Psion has been actively suppressing
- well, I've seen where they break: imho it *is* a (rather trivial, I'd say) design fault, so for the user it may well be irrelevant whether Psion
covered it up "proactively" (I don't think they would) or just didn't come round to thinking of it - afterv all it's not a crime, it's just an error.
Otoh, why are you beating that dead horse? A technical expertise might find that such a cable, with those holes (instead of, say, better protected and without perforation) is likely to break as and where it in fact does. The repair-shop in Germany *has* what they hold to be a better design, based on
any number of dead originals they've seen. Assuming their guess to be at
least as good as yours, the difference is: they offer a solution while you
seem to be trying to say there's no (proof of) a problem... Why?
Anyhow, I hope the rumored new Psion won't have it... I would greatly appreciate it if any number of affected but still affectionate 5MX users got the opportunity to offer their 2c for the new design...
;-)

I had almost exactly the same problem in the same circumstances on my 5mx recently. It worked fine one moment and wouldn't turn on the next moment after removing and reinserting the CF card. After discussing things with the Psion support people in Kentucky I sent the machine in for repair (it was still under warranty) and they replaced the mother board. Not what you wanted to hear, I'm sure, but that was my experience.

My (European) adaptor says "15V DC, 1.3A" so the specs can be slightly streched. Since
almost all new laptops have a LiOn battery they should have similar power requirements (with
more Amps). My Thinkpad runs on 16 V, the power supply delivers 3.3A. With a different (or
additional) plug, this should even be able to drive both machines at the same time.

The ISP does not actually care what the phone number is as long as there is one there.
Incidently this could be the cause of international calls being rejected sometimes as routing can vary on a call by call basis and not all carriers will forward caller ID.

I bought a laptop last year and from an intensive study of specs etc I came to the conclusion that Sony laptops are excellent multimedia devices - often with WiFi built in but all the ones I looked at no longer had a Serial port or an Infra Red port. (in fact quite a number of new laptops no longer have serial ports or infra red - including the one I bought- an Acer). For my purposes I also included in by budget a Belkin (overpriced) USB to serial adaptor and a USB to Infra red dongle (from Maplin). The USB to serial adaptor worked fine - but only after I had downloaded the latest WIN XP drivers from Belkin (so worth the money after all), the Infra Red dongle works OK but is quite slow.

I to am thinking of going WiFi so will be intrested to see how things go for you. Don't forget to change the default encoding so that you don't have 'interlopers' using your bandwith.

Hi Itamar,
I should have put a <G> on that post about PSUs and eMail!
Actually I use the POD cable (and docking station) to connect to my modem and my Mac but occasionally to nothing but the PSU. The modem is mains powered and I have 2 Psion PSUs (and two 5mxs along with 2 docking stations and 2 Proporta cases). As the modem is mains powered and plugged in by the Psion PSU the Psion is *always* on mains power when connected to the 'Net.
I totally agree that if battery power is used then the Mail folder should be on C:.
But although I usually use Sergio's SaveMail so the Mail folder rarely has much in it sometimes I am sent large eMails (once a 4 MB one) so putting the Mail folder on C: is not really practical.
Saj Jumaani wondered if we qualify as an endangered species. I don't think so yet. Psion 3(a/c/mx) users aren't quite and I suspect there are enough 3 users too. Even earlier Psions are still used professionally (i.e. not by blinkered enthusiasts like me).
So far each generation of Psion seems the best pocket computer of it's time, though some need very big pockets.
Take care,
Phil.

Shack doesn't have any 15v 1.5a AC adapters available. Any ideas?
Many laptop computers use 15 volt adaptors, so look for a second hand
laptop adaptor with the right voltage. These will be a higher amperage,
but apart from being a bit larger physically this doesn't matter. You may
need to change the DC plug at the end of the cable, since laptops tend to
use a larger DC plug.

I also have two M-netBooks on the way. I ordered a CF card, PsiWin cable and power supply from Expansys last week. The cable and power supply were listed at 2-3 days lead time. I checked with them again yesterday and they still had 2-3 days delivery - they said they "had problems with the supplier...."

I'd try a good quality cyanocrylat superglue. Don't use the expensive shit you buy in those tiny tubes at gas stations. This is not a good quality superglue. Shops that cater to model aircraft builders are a good source. Not only will you get a lot more for your money, but it'll actually work. Be very careful when applying the glue, as this really is a case where a little can go a very long way and remember that this stuff is perfectly capable of making the Psion a permanent part of your body or glueing your eyes shut, so keep away from children. The only thing cyanocrylate glue won't glue is fatty plastics like polypropylene or polyethylene which is what the bottle is made of.
The model aircraft bilders variety of superglue usually comes in three varieties, very runny, medium and thick. I've never found a use for the very runny stuff as it seems to go everywhere except where needed. The medium has some gap filling properties, sets in around 15 - 30 seconds and is a good all round glue for most applications. The model aircraft shop will probably also stock an accellerator, often referred to as "kicker" in a small spray can. Apply a drop of glue, assemble the bits and giver it a spray of kicker. You'll hear a crackle, and the glue sets instantly. Last, but not least, you can buy a product to dissolve cyano glue in case you glue something you shouldn't have.
Several years ago I accidentally rammed a quay when berthing my yacht in a gale. The first thing to hit was the roller furling drum at the end of the bowsprit and part of the flange was broken off. Luckily, I was able to retreive the broken part and glue it back on with superglue. It's held up just fine in spite of being outdoors for 6-7 years and frequently kicked by people boarding over the bowsprit.
Remember that cyanocrylate glue has a shelf life of between 6 and 18 months depending on quality. This partly explains why the stuff you get at the gas stations is useless. It's usually out of date.

Subject: Web and Google
Hi folks..
Something I noticed just today: I went to www.google.com, using Web as the browser, and entered a searchword, only to receive a 404 not found error. This applied to any searchword, and the result was the same on both Revo and S7.
Using Opera on the S7, I had no difficulty. All of which begs the question, does Web not support Google searches, or is just that some tweaking is required (and if so, what, please)?
I next tried www.yahoo.com, to find that my search was "not supported", while yahoo.co.uk *did* carry out the search! Again, searches on both of these worked fine using Opera. Anyone else experience this problem, I
wonder?

Subject: Netbook Dial-up/Connection Problem
Hope someone can help!
I recently obtained a Netbook and have been dialing up to the internet through the Psion Gold Card modem with no problems, until today.
When I tried to open my mailbox through the Email app, it pops up the connect dialog as normal. However after I click OK, the following dialog and message is displayed:
Problem connecting to Mailbox
Already Exist
When I try to start Opera and go to google.com the message was
Network Problem (although I suspect this is expected, having read somewhere Opera cant connect to 'Net independently)
My Netbook did not even attempt to dial the modem. I have tested the modem seperately and it is working fine.
The last time I was successful in dialing up to the 'Net was yesterday, my last attempt failed (not as above error) because I tried to connect by GPRS through my T68i but I apparently forgot to install the GPRSUPdate.
Does anyone have any suggestions to the solution? Starting and restarting Email does not seem to have effect. I have closed all programs and shut down and start up my Netbook several times to no avail.
I am also thinking of trying a soft reset, however I do not know how to do this on a Netbook.
Any suggestions will be most appreciated.
Thank you and regards,
Koi Hin
