This is a good idea. If you agree, we will encrypt the addresses in the proposed form in our Epocdigest.
But as first trial I removed the addresses at all. What is your opinion?
I think, the most of Epocdigest subscribers uses her/his Psion machines for reading the Digest. For converting a marked text to a human readable form I wrote a small macro. If we will decide to convert and if you are interested in this macro, pls. let me know.

Hi All
Thanks for all of the interest in the 3mx that I had for sale. It is now sold.
I might be very lucky, or it might be the way that it has remained relatively unused, but I have never had a problem with the batteries on my Mako (Revo Plus). It has mostly sat in a safe since the day of purchase! It comes out every couple of weeks for a recharge and a game of cascade. As it seems a bit of a waste just sitting there I have decided that it might as well find a new home. It is of course pristine, includes all original packaging, docking station, cd, manual and leaflets. I disposed of the US power supply and replaced it with a UK version, which is included. Its for sale at 70 ukp delivered in the UK only. Any interest from the list?
I hope that no-one minds me using the list as my private jumble sale!

Remember that some of the spammers are using fairly sophisticated extraction techniques to locate email addresses, and then manipulate them back into a valid address. At a minimum I'd suggest in the email address remove the < and >, replace with at, and replace each full stop with a space. in addition, add some invalid characters to the first part of the address past (adding to the .com or .net doesn't work because they know how to correct that automatically). In essence, make it very hard to identify as an email address unless a human reads it.

I have always found that backup to a folder on a CF makes a wonderful (albeit not perfect) way of handling backups. Takes only a few moments to get a reset Psion back into action that way.
I've thought of the PsiWin backup as more of an emergency copy, although the very first time you copy it is pretty clean (so you can always move the backups elsewhere, and force a brand new copy from time to time).

Yes, they CAN register all calls, and the numbers. Mostly it's the 'free' services that does it, but more and more are doing it.
When they log the phone number they also log the IP address and 'machine name' given to the machine. That way, if there's a complaint, like someone sending out lots of offers for a popular pill, they can track the perpetrator and block his access.

Well, Psion IS famous(or rather infamous) for being tightlipped about new machines.
but, in the past this has been to preserve sales of existing models until the new model is launched. (They can't afford to end up with large numbers of old models)
Now, on the other hand?
If they're prepping a new PDA, they don't have a current product on the market, if you don't count the netBook(which isn't really a PDA), and the netPad which is for the specialist market, so there's no real danger of losing any sales.

In the past there was a rumour of a Revo with Bluetooth that was shelved at the last minute because they didn't think Bluetooth was mature enough...
Also, nowadays MMC and SD cards are small, but can store reasonable amounts of Data, so they may have rectified the lack of removeable storage...

Yeah...
But it was no fun for me when I had to install WinNT on them....
We use a boot-floppy that logs onto the network, connects to a server and runs an automated install script.
(A common way to do it in large offices)
A bit difficult without a floppy...
And now the same PC's are to be reinstalled with XP.
Guess how we're doing it....
I also quite often transfer files from my desktop PC to whatever laptop i'm trying to resurrect...

If we can't say s**t, then how can we express our opinion that M$ programs attract bugs like s**t attracts flies?
Who will be the first to test their Psion with a large Compact Flash?
HANNOVER, GERMANY, MARCH 13, 2003 - SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK) today introduced a four gigabyte (GB) CompactFlash* (CF) card, the world's largest capacity CompactFlash memory card. With the new announcement, SanDisk is leveraging its production 0.13 micron NAND flash technology and a new advanced high density component package to quadruple the capacity of its largest capacity CF card. The card, which is in the popular Type I CF format, was introduced at a press conference at the CeBIT trade show. SanDisk is demonstrating products at the show in Hall 21, Booth B-24.
I certainly hope someone manages to see it at the show and try
it in a Psion. Meanwhile, what is the largest CF that anyone in this
group is using? I have 128MB, but I'm sure lots of people will have larger.

It was my experience that PsiWIn 2.3.3 on Win2k does not install shortcuts to the upgrade program. The program is still there (in C:\Program Files\Psion\PswWin\PSIUPGD.exe by default), but it won't work. It runs but after copying all the files claims it can't find them. You can still convert individual files by copying them to the new machine, which might be better anyway since it gives you more control. At any rate that's what I did when I upgraded a few months ago.

Replacing in each sender address is not enough. I do not believe that the digest should display sender addresses at all.
If I need to contact a certain person, I can always write "Rolf, please contact mein the body of my message.
But it would be better if the headers themselves completely hid the sender addresses. Once spammers get your email address, you will be forced to abandon your account at some point.
So I would be strongly in favor of a more discreet approach to the digest ...

Good suggestion. I would go for just munging or removing addresses in the Web archive.
I think we do need to keep full email addresses in the Digest sent to users as it is potentially useful to be able to CC someone when posting a response to a really urgent query. A copy of a posting to a subscriber could take 24 hours off the time to sort out a query, rather than having to wait for the next digest.

Hi all, long time lurker here...
One of the magazines I subscribe to at work (The Engineer) had a small news piece this week about Psion's 2002 results and the article was illustrated with a picture of a new/prototype/abandoned/concept machine branded as Psion/Symbian. I've scanned the article with the picture and posted it up on the web at http://www.smellycat.org/psion/psion.html if anyone is interested.
Is this the machine that Psion was developing with Motorola then dropped when Psion pulled out of consumer machines?

The Anti-spammers reckon that replacwith <at> or anything similar is not always effective as the spam address-harvesting-engines are savvy to that. The digests are already available in zip form so that is good. If the eAddress in an HTML document is masked somehow, as a form or something (I can't remember how to do it) then the engines can't recognise it as an eAddress.
The find-and-replace function (I know you already know) should make whatever solution easy.
Good luck,
Phil. <
In case anyone wanted it, I have written a simple Windows utility that will perform a light encryption of any string by simply converting it to html hex (e.g. 'a' becomes '%61') I use it when I want to put an email address on a web page.
href="mailto:%6D%65%40%6D%79%64%6F%6D%61%69%6E%2E%63%6F%6D">Mail Me</a>)
The utility also reverses the string to human readable form, so it can be used in the digest and any member wishing to email another would simply copy the string, paste into the utility and click the button to convert it back to a valid email address.
If you do wish to have this utility, email me and I will send it to you as a .ZIP file.
Note: You may freely use and distribute the application, but I accept no liability for its use.
I would like to point out that I would also send you the source code so that you may compile it yourself, in case you are concerned about receiving executables.
To compile the application, would require MS visual basic.

--MP3 player and Palmtop--
I think Palmtop Magazine have got it in for MP3 players on the Psion;
In Issue 34 in question and answer a reader asked if it where possible to play MP3s on a Psion, the answer was no.
Then in Issue 36, just to p**s them off I hope Alexander Zavorine creates EPlayM (at this point text based). Palmtop begrudgingly acknowledges this, but goes on to say "If you want MP3 on EPOC right now, you'll have to move up to the Nokia 9210" because I suppose "music files are horribly broken up".
Finishing with "Personally, I went out and spent £30 on a small CF-based MP3 player" so there!
Then in Issue of 3 of Palmtop User we get an article headed "MP3 if you must"!
Describing EPOC MP3 users as "masochists" playing on "tinny Psion palmtop speakers" in a review of Audio Player MP3 player.
I think Palmtop are missing the point a little, I use EPlayM (I will register a copy of Audio Player in support of this project) to play audio books (Sherlock Holmes mainly) and comedy shows (Tony Hancock) while working on my netBook.
Its easy to convert bulky stereo MP3's into light weight mono jobs, and its great to have this entertainment on my beautiful Psion, I would say one of my top 5 most used and favourite applications.
I think this bad press stems back to Alexander making Palmtop looking rather foolish, a touch of sour grapes perhaps?
--Re.Thomas Vidbjørg--
Yes I've had quite a few emails from this bloke and haven't a clue who he is.
His emails always come with .exe attachments, I didn't know they where viruses but took and shroud guess and deleted them (I pick all my email up on a Psion, viruses need not apply anyway).

Will.

Hello all,
As the rumour mill is still trundling, I'll happily follow up what I mentioned a few weeks ago.
While speaking to a person who is active in the Psion marketplace, the conversation drifted into the 'what ifs' of what could be done next with machines in the 5mx genre. Surpisingly, he mentioned that a new machine was pending and would be very up-to-date. I got a strong feeling that this was going to happen some time soon, Aug/Sept time.
As our man in Toronto was helover by an NDA, so I suspect was our man in London.
And the wheels go round and round.

Subject: FS: 1 used and 1 NEW 5mx in Toronto, Canada
I thought I'd offer these here first, before taking them to Ebay. I'm not nearly as mobile as I was even a year ago and as my mobility has decreased so has my need for a small portable handheld. So I've moved onto a netBook and would accordingly like to sell both of my 5mx's.
I purchased both units NEW from Exportech about one year ago. One unit I have used daily since, while the other unit was examined on arrival from the UK before being put aside as a backup and it remains totally unused. The used unit has had a screen protector on from day one, and has been stored (when closed up) in a PalmTec Hardcase (which I'll throw in at no added cost), and I've only opened/closed the used unit, on average, 2-4 times a *week* - so there should be very little wear on the screen-cable. The used unit does have faded keys like most used 5mx's. Both machines come with the original box, manual & PsiWin CD, but the used unit will be missing the serial synch cable.
Here that is again, more succinctly:
For sale: 1 x UNUSED NEW 5mx, with original box, manual, cable & PsiWin CD.
For sale: 1 x one year used 5mx in MINT condition except for faded keys, with free PalmTec hardcase thrown in, with original box, manual & PsiWin CD - but missing serial synch cable.
Highest fair offer over the next little while takes either (or both) of them. If you are in Toronto I can personally deliver the unit(s) to you at a mutually agreeable time and location, otherwise I will ship the unit(s), well packed, via your choice of shipping method at your expense.
