we have been trying to get in touch with intelligent life forms from outer space for years. if there isn't out there, why did He create a huge space for nothing? if there is an intelligent life form out there, i guess they just don't want to have anything to do with us because for years we have been killing our own kind since time immemorial.

Subject: MalayBook
Hi,
I have just received my Malaybook. First impressions are very good. Anyone who wants one would do well to read http://hasbrouck.org/netbook/ as it is very comprehensive. I am glad I ordered the cheap sita bag (sold out now!) with it as they do not wrap the netbook at all protectively. It took 10 days to get to me from the date of order which is not bad. The gold card works well - I must try a fax later as my old travel modem wouldn't do that since the 5 classic and it was slow. I tried an actiontec wireless card but it won't work. Anyone know of any scources? I haven't been able to get a list of compatable cards - the psion site is a nightmare.
Can anyone let me have a copy of PI beam version 1.0 which I believe works on the Netbook /S7 as the later versions I have crashes it?
Am I right in saying that Netbook owners can get Opera 5 from Psion as we have 3.62 or must it be purchased?
Cheers Jon Welford

Dear Itamar,
<< The disadvantage of backing up only to a CF card is that there is no back up if you either lose your machine or something goes wrong during restoring that coud corrupt both the C disk and the CF card >>
Depends on how paranoid you want to be. I can add the possibility that something goes wrong while the Psion is connected to the PC and has the effect that all that's stored on the Psion (C, D and E drive) and the PC is damaged beyond repair. Your house can catch fire - the fire spreads so quickly that you don't have the time to gather any belongings - there go the Psion and PC - up in smoke.
Keeping a backup on CF card is perfectly safe as long as you take a few simple precautions:
1) Don't keep the card in the Psion's drive as a malfunctioning Psion can damage the card.
2) Don't keep the card in the same bag as your Psion as a thief will get the Psion as well as the backup.
3) Don't expose the card to physical damage as you can't restore from a broken card.
4) Don't expose the card to strong electromagnetic fields as these can wipe the card clean of any data.
5) Don't put the backup card blindly back in the Psion when something goes wrong with. Examine what's wrong as a malfunctioning Psion will damage the backup as much as the card that was in it.
I keep my backup CF card in a metal container for carrying a small stack of business cards. The CF card fits snugly, the metal prevents physical damage and acts as a Faraday Cage.
<< What would you put on a 4Gb disk for usage on a Psion ? I can't even fill my 128 Mb one >>
Quite simple : First law of storage says that storage space always gets filled up, whatever the storage capacity. Put a 4 GByte CF card in your Psion and you start to carry those 'just in case I might need them' files your wouldn't have put on your 128 MByte card. You're going to lose the urge to prune old files and applications you don't use anymore. You start to keep big files on CF disk, like scanned images of paper documents and magazine articles, simply because you can. Why keep a selection of Route and Street Planner maps on CF card when you can have them all at the tap of the stylus. Etc, etc.

Hi Everyone,
I for one hope that Julie with her Axim, and Peter with his C700 to name but two, will keep us all upto date with how they find their new toys.
If we are realistic, I think we all know deep down that our EPOC days are numbered. While there is software out there to do just about everything we want, as our hardware dies and is unable to be replaced this becomes just useless files taking up space on the web.
I for one am more interested in the new Sharp, and the fact that it is open source ought to encorage more and more software to appear soon.
Do these other platforms have Digests like this? This type of resource really is fantastic and ought to be encouraged. If the other platforms don't have Digests I for one would be happy to encourage them to sign up and join in with us.
Having people around with experience of other platforms ought to help those of us who are either forced into the change, or want to change.Who knows they may be also be able to shed light on the few remaining unanswered Psion questions ????(Maybe we ought to start a new thread of "what are the unanswered questions?)
All the best,
John Wetton

Thanks for the thought, but a S7 is WAY too big to fit in my handbag OR my pocket <g> (and the Axim's already on order anyway - sadly finances won't run to a selection of options).
I do confess though, that when the S7 first came out, I did try to find an excuse to buy one, really I did!
As to the "original price" ... I found a receipt the other day showing that I paid £499(!) for my original Series 5 CLASSIC ... complete with flaky paint and flaky ROM that couldn't update values in frozen panes in a spreadsheet, etc. <g> - remember those?
Nostalgically ...

- how to launch a query on more than 1 criterium (for example: I wish to get all people, at the same time living in Grenoble (crit. nr 1), owning a 5mx (crit. nr 2) and going skiing (crit. nr 3)...
One way to do this is to use "sort by label," setting the 3 labels to sort by as the three criteria you are interested in. When you then go into list view, all the records that match your three search criteria will be listed consecutively.

I can't remember the beginning of this thread, but I think the question was: How to use a lookup function to find some value corresponding to the name of a town, and also some indication of if the town isn't found. In that case, I think the answer is something like:
=IF(VLOOKUP(CELL("CONTENTS",Name),Towns,1)=CELL("CONTENTS",Name) ,VLOOKUP(CELL("CONTENTS",Name),Towns,2),"Not found")
Where "Name" is the name of the range(cell) where you enter the name of the town to lookup, and "Towns" is the name of the range where all the town
data is stored.

Subject: mbm view yet again
dear all,
good evening from japan. i just got home from work & can't face the tv news just yet. this is a longish post & will doubtless bore everyone to tears, but there's a lot that i want to get off my chest about this mbm view reg code business. please either skip it, or bear with me.
me, previously:
> << look, i was just trying to do a few people on this digest a favour > >>
rolf b.:
> <<You may be doing a few people a favour but are undermining the
> possibilities to get MBMView back into regular supply to the general > EPOC community.>>
again, rolf:
> << ...The LAST thing the Digest community needs is for some "niC b" to > dish out his registration details to all comers. The sincerity of an
> approach on behalf of the subscribers to the EPOC Digest is completely > undermined when one subscriber doesn't want to play by the rules. >>
eh?!? whose rules? & who appointed you lord of the digestives? did you actually read any of my previous posts? i wish things were different & that poor lieuwe de vries was still around. & i wish too that people
were still able to register mbm view.
rolf, i applaud you for approaching the family, but i hope that you've been listening to the many other voices on this digest & don't misrepresent the potential market for this software. once again (& bugger, i'm repeating myself again): like it or not, mbm view reg codes (not mine) can be googled (i did check) & probably kazaa'd & gnutella'd too. nae man can tether time nor tide, i wrote, with a heavy heart.
now, i've just read mark deppe post (& forgive me everyone for quoting him in full, yet i wish to echo his voice for he expresses much of what
i feel too in my soul):
............
<<Dear Rolf,
Thanks for all the effort you are putting into reviving MBMVeiw, it is appreciated as are your thoughts on various courses of action.
<<<I wrote "a kind of business proposal">>>
Excellent all the best with it, I feel you will make an excellent representation for the psion community.
<<<Another aspect is that two people have already mentioned on the Digest that they see no bones in supplying their MBMView registration details to others. We may have to reckon with the fact that these
details are already out and about and are reducing whatever earning potential there was left into nothing.>>>
Maybe and maybe not. From the postings I have seen these people are acting with personal integrity - I realise that this may differ for
other people and is not a legal stand - and have no intention of defrauding or causing harm. I would speculate (I do not believe I am naive or gullible, I often function on an honesty trust basis and it
has worked very well for me) if you were to resurrect MBMview in a commercial format that those people who have not paid for their registration codes through an inability to and have obtained them from friends or kind hearted individuals would be happy to pay for the
program retrospectively, they would have to be granted an amnesty, or they could avoid declaring they ever had an illegal reg code and just
pay to register even though they already have a code, as I am sure they would want to support future developments and they might want access to other resources or technical assistance. Obviously if it became
freeware then the issue of those with reg codes who have not paid will not arise. Thats my thought on it and it is supported by 10 years of great support, honesty and trustworthiness from a psion community which has never ripped me off and dealt more than fairly and generously with me.
I hope your plans succeed and there will be room for understanding, and reconciliation. Peace is needed in all areas of life, let it start
with us. Some harsh words have been said (understandably as people
have passionate opinions) which I feel do not reflect the character of the psion community though I do understand their sentiments and appreciate where they are coming from with them, and the psion
community is not a rigid business enterprise, we have room for tolerance, compassion and understanding.>>>>
............
this is me again, nic b: the evil grave robbing wrecking pirate guy.
i gave out my mbm view reg code in good faith to 3 others on this digest, each of whom wrote pledging as i'd originally suggested, to
give what they could afford to some form of charity or other. now
should it be the wishes of lieuwe's family for mbm view to be resurrected as shareware, i will personally donate the costs of the registration for those 3 people.
best wishes & peace to all,
nic b.

Re.: Data - Sorry, not possible. Better invest in the other program <G>.
Answer to: Kevin Thorne
Re. Colouring apps - The only thing I can think of is the program "Color Magic" which allows you to give tool bars and other parts of the screen different colours, either according to your own wish or according to preset combinations. I use it and for example I softened the toolbars on the side into yellow, the top menu into light blue with the choosen option in red with white letters. It certainly enhances my enjoyment of the S7. I don't know whether it will work on black and white programs or not.
Answer to: David Lir
Re. No email addresses - Don't worry, you may "*respectfully* but *strongly* disagree". The digest is here for the enjoyment of it's subscribers and everybodies opinions are valid, valuable and taken into account, even though it is never possible to satisfy everybody all the time.
Re.. Back-up - Yes, but I don't have another CF card in the E drive. One CF card is enough for me.
Re. Email addresses in general - I just wonder. The digest is sent by email to the subscribers only, and upon sending it enters the email address of the subscribers only. How would a potential spammer get hold of the digest this way ? Is it possible to scan other peoples mailboxes or to intercept emails on the way ? AFAIK the digest archive is changing the email addresses (the two digests have been corrected) and anyhow is zipped up as well. So is there really such a danger for this digest to be a source of SPAM ? I wonder. It was one of the reasons we decided not to use Yahoo or another organisation but to keep it of the web and safely on our Psions only.
Answer to: Robert Howkins
Re. LOOKUP in Sheet - Exact does not work, but you can check the exactness with an if function. In your example the data are in B4 to B8. Put the name you want to search for in D4. Put in D5 the following formula:
"=vlookup(“Leeds”,B4:C8,1)" which will show the name "Leeds". In D6 you put the following formula :
=IF(D4=D5,vlookup(“Leeds”,B4:C8,2) ,"error").
If the name is exactly the same it will show the correct answer, if not it will show the word "error", or if it falls out of the range "N/A".

Subject: Free macro...
Hi there!
I wonder if anyone is interested in the following macro for Macro5: it has to be set a "macro at switch on" in the "menu - tools - advanced settings" of Macro5 and does the following:
- at switch on (once a day) it displays any selected wallpaper (even a sound if you want...) and a window with time, battery status and owner info;
- then you can simply exit with "Esc" or launch any given application (e.g. your Agenda file);
- if the batteries are OK, it can also save to CF card up to five files (but I can easily increase this number) if they've been modified from the previous time the macro was launched (a good idea to have daily backups of files you use and modify often; in case of hard resets you have a fresh copy on the CF card...)
At the moment all the settings have to be directly edited in the "opl" macro file, but if there is enough interest, I can add a good setup window to make it more user friendly ;-)
And, of course, any feedback and suggestion to improve it will be greatly appreciated!
Let me know!
Ciao for now

Subject: Email app BCC
I have noticed that the BCC feature does not work with the email app on my netbook as the recipient sees all the address in the BCC. What I want to do is be able to send an email to many people without them seeing the address of everyone else and all the scrolling involved in a psion. By the way this is not because I enjoy spamming loads of people, it is for data protection etc. I do not like to pass on other peoples email addresses, and would not want anyone to use a list of names I sent to them for anything. Any help on this appreciated.

To get the functionality you're seeking:
=if(LOOKUP("Leeds",B1,B1)="Leeds",LOOKUP("Leeds",B1,c1)="L
eeds","No such entry")
This checks by carrying out the lookup twice - with subtly different
range specs! - and if there is no entry for Leeds gives a useful message.

I also received these 3 viruses, so it sounds like the digest is the source, don't know whether this is from the website or via an infected subscriber.
But I DO think we should disguise the email addresses on the web in a sensible way, replacing the at with something not too obvious.
