Re.: Virus - Sorry to hear about your virus problem. One of the reasons I run my email solely on my Psion is to avoid getting virusses sent to me. I thought however that that famous email was one about money from Africa and not a virus, but who knows. I can't help you with sorting out your problem, but hope you will soon be up and running again.
Answer to: Owen Morgan
Re. email addresses - AFAIK the email addresses in the digests on the website have been altered. Whether that is enough or not I don't know. We are working on a more stringent solution and will inform the digest shortly.
Answer to: Antony
Re. visual differences - Just above the top row of keys my S7 says in quite big letters "ser7ies". That should do it even on the pictures. I suppose that as Psion did not continue in the PDA market, the changing to colour screens was not as easy as you portray it to be <G>.

Subject: Nokia cardphone
In my quest for a fax modem for my netBook I have just acquired a secondhand Nokia Cardphone Type RPM-1Q high speed data GSM 900/1800. Nothing with it but for Ł20 thought it was worth a shot!
There have been reports on the digest (by Trygve I think?) of using a Nokia Cardphone II, but only when placed in the PCMCIA-pod meant to be used with the S3c/S3mx/S5/S5mx machines. However I think this is an earlier version.
The netBook is meant to query any PC-card device, and will not acknowledge any card that reports drawing more than 750mA. This one however seems to respond quite nicely

I am hoping this means it is in working order and compatible with the netBook. I have a PCMCIA pod in storage anyway but am on the road for another 2 weeks. At the moment I am getting "No response from modem" but this might be a case of the cardphone being locked to another network. While I am trying to verify this just wondered if any of the above means anything to one of our more technically minded members, and if anyone has settings for this device?

I have successfully reduced MP3 files from 5 meg to 2.5 meg using win32LAME (RazorLame1.1.4) With the Options I select a smaller sample rate for decoding. You may need to decode an MP3 to wav and back again so ensure you have plenty of disk space on you PC.

Kevin,
The player will handle full bit rate files. From the point of MP3, they are issued for MPŁ players with stereo and a full sound range, that we can play them on the Series 7 (and even a 5mx or Revo) is proof of the ability of the OS. You will need access to a PC to be able to convert the files to a lower bit rate and thus smaller files. Also, putting lower quality files on the net will likely breach copyright somewhere!

Is someone in here using the Opera browser on a pc/laptop? How is it compared to MS IE or Netscape? Is it really faster (given the same factors)?
Ok guys... got it this is not the right forum ;-)

I don't actually plan to play the mp3 files on my netBook. Where did you get the program to play mp3 files on your psion? What psion are you using?
I can send you mp3 files by email if you want.

Subject: Re: New Psion - Screen Cable
Dear Rolf,
<<When the effect is that you're going to trade screen cable failures for a higher level of plug/socket problems you don't implement the idea as a manufacturer.>>
While I have not taken any Psions apart myself, the fact the motherboard need not be replaced (thankfully!) with the creen cable suggests that there is a connector at that end at the least. And the fact that the screen shows vertical lines that disappear when the the machine is partially closed (in the early stages
of the onset of failure) and the cable is getting repaced is indicative of the cable failure, not the connector failure. So
we can reasonably assume that the connector at the motherboard
end does not give too much trouble. At least my experience of Psions and Ericssons from 1995 is precisely that, and of course
I am quoting this at the risk of the sample size being rather small. So adding a second connector at the screen end is unlikely to make MTBF that much worse, while the gains in terms of increased sales can be that much greater.
This particular point carries a great deal if importance when
the owner lives in a country where the repair is extremely expensive, partly due to adverse parity rate. As for Ericsson users in Sri Lanka, they are really sunk when the cable goes - the machine
has to be shipped to Singapore at an astronomical cost. It happened to me more than once, and while I admit to being somewhat emotional on this issue, it does not take away the basic truth of my argument.
Had the cable been a user replaceable item, Psion would have
been a real 'Laptop killer' in the coutries where a Laptop is
out of reach for many people. That alone could have kept Psion
a thriving company, and 5mx or its worthy successor would have
been with us today. On the other hand, had I known about the
screen cable reliability and what is involved in the repair,
I would not have touched it with a barge pole in the first place,
in spite of the unbeatable functionality.
<<Practical reality is that service friendlyness isn't high on
the requirements list of the general consumer. Size, weight,
looks, technical features and price are far more important>>
I have no doubt that you are right but how much will a little
bump on the case and an additional connector will cost, when
the design costs are amortized over the full production run?
Surely it will be far cheaper that the amount the users are asked
to fork out for this repair now.
A returning customer, meaning an existing Psion user will gladly
pay that amount extra. Even a person totally new to the game
can now get some idea of a machine's reliability and maintainability by reading a list like this, and one with a reasonably intelligent approach will give some weightage to maintainability, unless
he lives next door to POS Ltd. While the weightages vary for different users, the existing ones will rate is high, judging
by the loads of emails on the screen cable issue to this list.
<<Reason why manufacturers don't concentrate as much on service friendlyness as on ease of manufacture as the latter has a direct effect on price. After all, you have to sell the product before you're ever going to service it>>
I beg to differ once again. Ease of manufacture and ease of maintenance are not mutually exclusive. In fact in many cases they go together. While adding a connector to the screen will add a few cents (or
pence)to the cost, and maybe one second to assembly time, how
much will be the gains? At the same time the trend in every industry (Except perhaps for PDA manufacturere it looks like) is to go
for ease of maintenance. This is very appearent in both Motor
and Aerospace industries, which has a major beneficial effect
in the cost of ownership as opposed to acquisition cost, which
will in turn enhance the repeat sales.

Subject: nB: Some questions
Hi,
I've bought a month ago a second-hand nB and as you think I'm very pleased with it. Actually I use my beloved 5mX Pro during the day and then swap the CF256MB into the nB and work ahead with a far better screen and nice keyboard. Except keyboard, screen, ability to play MP3 and ability to surf the web wia ethernet and ADSL, it doesn't differ (for my use) from a 5mX.
I've a couple of questions/problem about/with it.
1. Is it possible to exchange the functions of Menu and Fn on either the 5mx or the nB? I tried with Macro5, Keyboard Layouter and Assistant with success mainly because Fn is a function key.
2. Is it possible to disable the pseudo numeric keypad? Expecially stupid in conjonction with this Fn/Menu switch...
3. I have recorded some Record files with my 5mX in the past with the higher compression. I installed Record on the nB (it's a optional component) but it can only read non-compressed file. Neither can the great Zavorine's program ENotem. How can I manage to have these files playing on the nB?
4. I don't think it is possible but is it possiple to get rid of the Virtual Java Machine? The nB is a low low low memory machine (I have far more memory on my 5mX Pro with lots of files more installed on it!). This JVM uses approx. 3MB which would be very useful because there is only 7MB left on my nB without anything running (I am used to have approx. 10 files opened simultenously [excellent OS by the way!] so 3MB RAM more would be greatly appreciated)
5. Could anyone give me a FTP adress where I could download stuff for the Psion? I havn't been able to find one...
Many thanks for you in advance!
Have a nice day, Guillaume

The great :
Screen is a revelation for older eyes
The keyboard is superb , it is not only the best of any PDA , bar none but even beats most desktop/notebook keyboards
Alphaword is brilliant as a basic word processor , the find and replace function is excellent , it also has a built-in book reader
File exchange with other PDA's works using the two-modem trick ( there's no serial port and USB Host is for printers only
(Yes , there was talk about drivers for USB modems , but because of intellectual property issues , these are only available for big bucks and under NDA for enterprise users ) so Irda and USB client/hotsync is the only way to connect to other devices
>>Is there a file manager on the disk? If not have you tried any after market file manager? <<
There are 3 : Cardpro ( on the CD-Rom supplied with your Dana ) , Filez ( the most advanced one , free download ) and FileCaddy ( free download from sf.net , search for "filecaddy" or ask Euon Mee off - or on-digest
All offer rename capabilities
I have tested all three and they work fine

===================================================================
Dana , the skinny of it | For Jim Watson-Gove
A few weeks ago I mentioned my first brief encounter with the Alphasmart Dana "lappilot"
Thanks to the cooperation of Mr Dirk Foch , who is in charge of sale for Europe ( both the UK and the entire Continent ) who kindly provided me with a loaner ,I now have a better overvieuw over what it can do and what it cannot do
Second impressions ( the first were at the Nederlandsche Onderwijs Tentoonstelling ) :
The keyboard is superb , bar none , the screen an absolute revelation for aging , tired eyes , the feel durable without being clunky
Built-in are the usual Palm applications , plus Alphaword , a modified version of Wordsmith
Alphaword makes good use of the wider screen (560 by 160 ) allowinglarger notes ,reports and the like to be entered with ease
The hardware :
PalmPilot ( PalmOS 4. ) with extended screen and full-size PC-style keyboard
2 Type II MultiMedia card slots ( support for SDIO possible) USB Host port ( Printer only , not all printers supported ! , requires
external power , but power from mains/vehicle adapter is looped through )
External power jack : 5.5/2.1 barrel jack , center positive
Power requirements : 7.5 Volts , up to 500 mA when charging ( can be run from cellphone travel charger , I run mine from a Ericsson travel charger )
Now the works :
As said , the keyboard is superb , bar none ,, the screen a revelation
The build-in apps are OK , Alphaword is an excelllent , but basic word processor , comparable to Pocket Word on my 680
It allows for different font sizes and styles within the same document but no embedded graphics or objects
As an alternative there's Quickword from cesinc.com , but you have to pay extra for continued use and it no longer suppports the wide screen in its latest version , the bundled version no longer runs on Dana
Quicksheet , however does run , but this too is no longer widescreen enabled
Connectivity is a different matter , so far the only thing that works is my DI-27 IRDA clipon on my Ericsson R250s
A Pegasus IRDA modem , sent together with my loaner , worked once , then failed to connect
Trough the DI-27 I managed to get a login into my "home" system and was able to get at my mail there before fetching it using pdQMail (a.k.a Eudora for Palm )
Storage cards :
I popped in a SanDisk 32 megs MMC , formatted it in the machine to get the correct directory structure , then used a PCMCIA adapter card to copy some files from my 680 onto this thing and I was in businesss
When it comes to copying files back and forth between my 680 and Dana , that's a breeze , ( yes I *DO * occasionally get lost allocation chains = clusters . , but nothing like I had with the OsariS where the complete card became unreadable on the 680 )
I can create a file on the Dana using Alphaword , then move the card to my 680 and open it there in EmuraEdit , tidy it up a bit and sent it off as an email (There's another possibility for file exchange , using a terminal emulator on both the Dana and the other PC/PDA and using IRDA )
Connectivity:
The jury is still out on this , the only thing that worked is my DI--27 + Ericsson R250 S
As mentioned I could connect to my "home" server (ursus.bio.vu.nl ) and use lynx and pine there using palmtelnet
Getting/sending mail using pdQMail worked fine , but that email client is unfortunately not widescreen enabled ( and never will be ! )
Workaround : Compose/edit in Memopad/Alphaword , then paste back in pdQMail for sending
Tested the bundled Aileron , but that does not work through standard ISP's (requires separate subscription ) $B%e(B
There was talk about suppport for USB modems , but that has become very uncertain by now that USRobotics has scrapped the USB versions of their Sportster and Courier models
Latest news is that Alphasmart is probably scrapping the USB driver effort because of both technical as well as Intellectual property issues as well as the limitations of the Palm environment and the Dragonball CPU and go for IRDA -based solutions instead (did I say that the DI-27 worked great )
The Psion IR Travel Modem works great too , 3Jtech.com.tw now has a workalike based on their Pegasus III model in beta , that too works without a hitch according to testers , that one has a built-in recharger for NiMH batteries ( 4x AAA )
(Yes , relief is now in sight for those who want an IR modem )
in short , this is a great writer's tool , based on PDA technology rather than obsolete 16-bit PC-compatibles like the competition
That it uses MMC as the card format is no longer an issue now that thers are good prices as well as widespread availability for this type of card
The connectivity side let us down in a serious way ( no direct networking possible , only serial over IRDA supported , card slots do not have SDIO support ) but using a cardreader and IRDA modem these issues can be overcome
It is however possible to hook up to a PC through theUSB client port for syncing and file exchanges using Hotsync
Comments welcome

I'm assuming you've got further than me (where I get "Not Found" just trying to LOOK at my emulator's C Drive on Windows XP. I've resorted to running it on my old Win98 PC instead for the (hopefully) short time I'll be needing it. BTW, I've also had problems in the past trying to install on the emulator from SIS files - and I can't for the life of me remember whether I ever resolved it, and if so how.
Anyway, try this (with apologies for suggesting anything you may have already done, as you haven't given me any clues <g>:
1. Manually copy your backup files (wherever they are) across to the emulator's C and D drives (using Windoze). This includes all the System directories on both (all three) drives if you were using a CF
disk(s). [You HAVE got a backup, haven't you?]
2. On the emulator's C and D (and E if you had a S7/Netbook) drives, rename the \System\OPX directory to something else (e.g. \System\marmOPX (with in the emulator or in Windoze)
3. Copy the PC OPX files that Al Richey has sent you to the emulator's C:\System\OPX directory.
4. Make all the PC OPXes Read Only (again, either in the emulator or in Windoze).
5. In theory, all the apps you had installed on your Psion should now run exactly as they did before (provided of course that your collection of PC OPXes includes all the ones you need).
6. Let me know if this works! It's how I've set mine up, and RMRTask works for me ;-)

Hi
Can you help with a problem that has appeared with my S5 last week, The CF card which was working fine now appears to have dissappeared. According to the Psion anyway, If I select the 'D' drive it displays "disk not present" although it's still there where I left it.
As it was a 32k disk and almost full I decided that I would upgrade to 256k as their price has dropped recently to an affordable level but the new disc has the same result so I know the problem isn't with the disc but the Psion any suggestions as to what might be the problem?

Are you running Merlin or some other application that has the capacity to turn the backlight on automatically between certain times or if the Psion is connected to external power? I ended up turning this feature off as I found it rather annoying, particularly when I would turn the backlight off to conserve power and Merlin insisted on turnng it back on again!

The current situation in Iraq is one that many people, including myself have very strong feelings about. Any debate on such a subject can very quickly become heated. I have to agree with Rolf Brunsting that we should try to keep EPOC digest as a peaceful place we can retire to away from the horrors of human stupidity and selfishness.
There are lots of places you can discuss the war. Lets declare the EPOC digest a war free Zone.

The screen on my 5MX has just died too - I've about reached the same conclusion on what to replace it with. I can't quite decide between the Palm Tungsten and the Dell Axim (ie between Palm OS & PocketPC
OS). I don't feel any of the 'normal' excitement in buying a new technology toy - just a heavy heart that there isn't a new Epoc device for me to buy. I know I could scare up a 5MX to buy - but it really does seem like a dead end now.
I'm particularly anxious about a replacement for ABP and some way of writing my own scortcuts for frequently done tasks.
Do keep us briefed on how things go with the Dell.

I've often wondered what I would do if (or when) my trusty beloved S7 would no longer be with me for whatever reason. The answer simply is I would get another one! But this won't be possible forever and we will all be forced into a change at some point in the (hopefully) distant future. For me, although I don't even use one now, the 5mx was the king of all PDAs and I fully agree with you - give it a modernisation makeover (at least Bluetooth and a decent colour screen, maybe multimedia too) and I would be prepared to pay more than the value of the top of the range IPAQs for it. My 9210 is good but would be no match for a 5mx of the above spec linked via Bluetooth to a tiny similarly equipped handset. I really wish we could have enjoyed the clarity and colour quality of the 9210 screen on a 5mx. Alas, I don't suppose we ever will now :-(
