All:

Sorry I didn't make myself clear re: question whether Opera can open Barclays personal banking site.

The Opera version I was referring to is Opera 7 for Windows. Has anyone tried it yet?

Will appreciate any input on this. Thanks.

Kind Regards,

Saj

I dont know for my PDA's keep getting bigger. Initially I started with a Sharp Wizard amd then graduated to a Casio Pocketviewer. I missed the keyboard so I bought a Diamond Mako. But when I saw the Psion 7 I was in love. A big screen and easy to use keyboard and an operating system I liked all in one package. Since I have upgraded memory and purchased a 256meg CF card. I use my PDA for more than just date keeping. It is my ebook reader, word processor, work stuff including the creation of forms using Data. I even use it to read in the washroom. When I sync at work I get the daily news from Fox through mobipocket. Personally I am in heaven. I dont need movies or real audio  just simple os to use for reading and e-mail.

Gentlemen:

Don't you think enough has been said about this issue? Haven't we beat this issue to death already? Can we all go back to enjoying discussions about our Psions and minimizing debates on the rights or wrongs?

Itamar has a very good point.  And to paraphrase what Blessed Mother Teresa once said, "If you do good, many people will still think you are wrong.  Do good anyway."

Rolf:  Go ahead and do what is right regardless of what others think.  No need to justify your actions with lengthy discourses.  We will understand.

Answer to Mark Deppe

You asked about free ISPs, but paying for your own telephone calls, working with the BCC function.

Afraid to confess here that I e-mail from a PC, so have not tried out my server for Psion BCC compatibility.  However, it is free and has a 0845 number in the UK (calls charged at local rate).  If you would like to try it, go to www.freewire.co.uk.  Hope it works for you, as it is a good service provider, in my experience.

Hi Arne,

This difference isn't astonishing at all, if the 1638 mAh were consumed in one week and the 720 mAh in one month. The 5mx doesn't take into account the energy

consumed while it is powered off - my 5mx uses about 50 mAh per day.

Answer: I imagine there is an existing customer base of Psion users at least. Not to mention potential customers from the rest of the PDA market and laptop users etc.

I suspect that Psion abandoned the market because they realised there was a considerable increase in PDA manufacturers, some of which are massive companies (Sharp, HP etc). That combined with a MicroSoft based OS to appeal to people who buy all things Microsoft first, meant they figured they were too small to compete.

Oh, I almost forgot the mobile telephony market combining PDA's with phones.

With all the competition out there, I still believe the design and OS of Psion products is the best and I also believe that if they produced an updated S5 with comparable functionality and connectivity as other manufacturers, it would still be the superior PDA and would be a top seller.

Re: Opera + personal banking. I may be wrong, but I thought Saj was

asking about the Opera browser on a PC. If so, you are not required

to pay for Opera if you're willing to put up with a small ad banner.

So, Saj, download it, install it on your PC, and give your bank a

try. I have no trouble accessing any of my bank accounts or credit

card accounts.

<What about a contest within the Epoc digest, to design the most-wanted 5 mx / netBook successor ? Then send it to Psion / Teklogik and see if we move something. Likely not, but what about trying rather than sobbing ?>

It will almost certainly do no good at all now but I applaud you for trying.  One thing for certain - I'd much rather try to do my bit to persaude Psion that we WANT a modernised 5mx and fail trying rather than not try and just sit and just give up (and sob!)  If we don't even try we can't moan when this wonderful PDA bites the dust.  Let's at least try.  My own modernisation wishes for the 5mx would go as follows:

1 Ditch the green duckpond screen for a high-resolution colour TFT (naturally!)

2 Power it with a modern user replaceable li-ion power pack (essential for "1")

3 Give it Bluetooth to allow it to act as a proper "communicator" with new phones

4 Upgrade the hardware to support multimedia (well, at least a headphone jack!)

And that's it really.  Keep that beautiful keyboard, round off the square edges to make it look more contemporary, retain its approximate dimensions (or possibly slightly smaller) and retain ER5 (which I think is more functional than ER6/7).  Put my name down if you'd like to rally a petition, Franco!  Oh, one more thing, give it an unbreakable screen cable ;-)

Well, what about two machines, one with the 64 MB card in slot and

obviously the other with the new 128 MB card, doing infrared transfer?

I have Lotus Organizer 4.1 and 5.0 on my PC and I've tried creating a Synch profile that will work with Psion Contacts but it always fails saying it didn't finish normally and there may be errors. It doesn't produce a log file.

Well, I use Lotus Organizer 6.0 (having used version 5 before) and it

works fine. I suggest deleting (after export) all contacts from one of

the stores (Psion or Lotus) and trying again. Also, there is a small

file named Epoclog.001 in your temp dictionary that can be the cause of

the trouble. When you delete it, your syncing should be started "from

scratch".

To

Rolf Brunsting

Andrew Gregory      et al

I was completely touched by Rolf's new letter of 28th March, and happy he changed his mind.

And I would like to enlighten the problem from 2 new perspectives:

1. - on a chat forum I heard more complaints from users (I think Martin Guthrie is one of the moderators) who *paid* for there MBMV at Handango in the last weeks, but got no code from the author, and asked the forum about the author's availability.

In strict business terms it is now the family's responsibility to step forward, legally they can be litigated, sued. And this very new aspect of the problem cries for pretty fast solution (and a competent "negotiator" like Rolf B.), for this can harm 1/ the program itself, 2/ the faith in the shareware community, 3/ the innocent family.

2. - all the problems came from the awkward situation: the No1 picture viewer application is suddenly out of business. Like someone built a dam on river Nile. All "suspicious" actions, misunderstandings and misinterpretations come from this situation. No real bad action have taken place, just some "para-activity". Believe me Rolf, it's nothing wrong at all.

PS: Someone complained about losing data during changing of batteries.

My 2 pence: Always change batteries when the EXTERNAL POWER IS ON!

(It is useful not only for avoiding the above mentioned problem but lengthens the life of the backup batteries.)

Extra colours in sheet (on netBook)

I was surprised to see that documents converted from MS Excel can retain their cell background colours. These extra colours can be saved with the document, and with "copy-paste" (or "paste special/only format - in a more sophisticated way) can be transferred to and used in other documents. They are nice, and use the full 256 colour-space the nB supports!!

Sheet conversion problem with nConvert

Pls, German users, help me. As in Germany, we use "," for decimal.

If I use this setup, SHEET uses ";" as separator in the equations: IF(a;0;1)

nConvert can not convert these fields properly. Have you got any solution?

Subject: Miniature laptop style handhelds/C700-CF Card Transfer/Organizer contacts

I fail to see the excitement being generated by the Sharp C700. It is only

slight smaller than a Sony Vaio PCG-C1VN. This is a full-fledged Windows

laptop running Windows 2000 Professional. It has a Crusoe 667 MHz processor,

256K of RAM, a 15 gig hard drive, a CD R/W drive, a floppy drive, and a

battery life that averages about 4 hours. I know that there are some Linux

fanatics who will think the C700 is really cool but the software base for

Linux is simply not there compared to Windows. With the Sony, you don't have

to worry about synchronizing with Outlook because it's already there. Same

with Word and Excel. The only downside is the lack of instant on. I can buy

one of these right now at Costco for $1299 with no worries about Japanese

localizations and convoluted warranty problems.

If I'm going to buy something that's the size of small laptop, then I'll get

a real laptop, not another PDA. Now, if the C700 had some thing like 10-12

hours battery life, I'd likely take a second look. Right now, it seems to

have most of the problems of a laptop and none of the advantages.

I can't imagine how. You'd need something that could read and hold the

contents of the 64MB card and then transfer the contents to a 128 Mb card.

Is there some reason you can't get to a PC? A $25 card reader and 20 minutes

on a PC with USB port would solve your problem.

Subject: Synching Lotus Organizer Contacts with Psion Contacts

Andrew,

Do you have anything in the Psion Contacts program now? If so, delete all

the contact records (File, More, Delete All Contacts). Set up a new contacts

sync task and then try again. There can be a small corruption in Contacts

that prevents the sync from completing properly. If you have further

problems, than I'd suggest you go to either

http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/ssforum.nsf/CategoryAllThreadedWeb?OpenView&Star

t=1&Count=100&RestricttoCategory=Organizer or http://www.xpertss.com/ and

post your problem there.

Howard,

>I would like to transfer all data from a 64MB CF to a 128MB CF without using a PC.

One solution could be to find somebody with a netBook or Series7 which has dual slots...

I would suggest the following: Use a ZIP program to transfer any personal files in compressed form to your C drive first. It might be neccessary to copy the contents of C to your new CF first in order to make room. You can now transfer the ZIP file(s) to your new CF.

Next, reinstall any apps you might have on D from their original SIS files (you have to have them on CF of course). If you can't access the SIS files, you will have to copy the content of your system folder the same way. (ZIPping it in parts and putting it on C)

If you don't have a ZIP utility, you'll need more space on C to do the copying. Create a special "Transfer" directory on C and copy complete folders.

Whatever you do, it will cause havy card swapping ;-)
