Subject: Software for Record collection.
Hi.
I asked about this a little while ago, but didn't get any replies so I'm trying again.
I'm looking for software to organise my record collection. I have finished ripping everything to MP3 files and put it all on my new 20 gig MP3 player and will be sending the CD's home for safe keeping. A Psion based catalogue of everything would be very useful. EPOC Data isn't really an option as I need to be able to do nested searches.
I don't want to have to type in all the information again (I did that when I ripped the files), so I need to be able to export the MP3 tags from MusicMatch (or something else on the PC) and import them to the Psion application. I would also prefer if the application works on the Mako and S7 / NetBoook and supports embedded images (for album covers), preferably in colour (in case I ever fork over the money for a S7 or NetBook). I can live without the embedded images though.
I do have a copy of Powerbase somewhere, but gave up on it when I last loked at it a couple of years ago as I found the learning curve was too steep to be worth the effort. However, I assume someone may already have made a suitable Powerbase template?

Dear,
If you write "I don't know what Handango is", then do not express an
opinion (send it by snail mail :)
FYI Handango is the OFFICIAL distributor of MBM View, you pay there and
download the locked application, then they inform(ed) the author and he
send(t) an e-mail with the REGISTRATION KEY. Obviously, the poor family
in not aware of the whole Handango business, and Handango is not aware
of the sad facts. That's why Rolf's help can be really important!

1. - on a chat forum I heard more complaints from users (I think Martin Guthrie is one of the moderators) who *paid* for there MBMV at Handango in the last weeks, but got no code from the author, and asked the forum about the author's availability.
In strict business terms it is now the family's responsibility to step forward, legally they can be litigated, sued. And this very new aspect of the problem cries for pretty fast solution (and a competent "negotiator" like Rolf B.), for this can harm 1/ the program itself, 2/ the faith in the shareware community, 3/ the innocent family.
<<<<
Just FYI, I'm not a moderator on any of the chat rooms. I wish that I had the time! ;-)
As I understand contract law, if they paid for it at Handango; then their contract is with Handango - not the author or his family - and it's down to Handango to sort it out...
Best regards,
Martin Guthrie

The 256 colours is down to the CPU which has the LCD controller built-in, and also applies that limit. I believe the CPU is no longer being manufactured, so no doubt a more recent model has lifted the limits? BTW, I think the same applies to the audio capabilities.
Still on topic, I didn't mention my latest peeve! My recently purchased netBook runs off 15V, which is obviously no good for vehicle 12V power supplies. So while I have one adapter that can switch between my MC218, digital camera, and AA-NiMH battery charger, I've got to get *another* adapter just for the netBook! So, the new model :-) *has* to run off a two- cell Lion battery so it can charge off 12V. Also - it should be some sort of a snap-on battery pack arrangement where the pack is not fully enclosed by the main body.
For the folks who want their PDA to be a USB master (talk to USB devices) - USB master and slave connectors are different. So, if you wanted to hook your PDA to your PC *AND* hook your PDA to USB devices, your PDA needs to have *two* USB connectors. Unless you also want to carry around docking stations/adapters, the master USB connector would have to be full-size too! Not to mention the power supply requirements that would require an external power supply. USB was designed for the master end to be a big mains powered desktop, not a small battery powered PDA. I think USB is a really crappy design anyway, but that's getting off-topic. Yes, I know about USB-to-Go,
or whatever it's called, but to me that just makes USB look more like the hardware equivalent of Windows.

I've now got one of those Malaybooks to accompany my Revo - I can't speak too highly of it, it's a fantastic machine! However, I have one question to put to you - can you connect a netBook or S7 to the net via a GPRS mobile phone?
I can connect to the net with GSM phone or the Psion travel modem, but connecting via GPRS results in various error messages, even though I am using the exact settings as I have on my Revo. I tried installing the Mobile Connectivity Update 2.0, but this only makes things worse as it seems to disable IR, and I've had to uninstall it. Any ideas? Do any updates need to be installed on a netBook to make it work with GPRS?
Ciao

Subject: Corrupted Directory/File
Thank you to all who replied to my previous posting.
I have transferred files successfully on 2 previous occasions from my PC to my D: CF through the following method:
1. remove CF card (formatted as FAT16) from Netbook and insert into Card reader (USB) which is hooked up to Windows 2000 Professional PC (FAT32). It now appears as E Drive
2. Open Windows Explorer on PC, copy file/s and paste into destination directory on E: Drive.
3. Safe remove CF card and reinsert into Netbook. Files appear, everything working.
However, last night when I attempted the same action, the files did get transferred over, however, strange files appeared as well, with impossible file sizes. Subsequent attempts to copy, move files from the PC to CF card results in the error message: the directory or drive you are accessing is corrupted or unreadable.
If you subsequently remove CF card/reader and hook it up again, the drive works until another copy/move from PC.
Attempts to delete the funny files, do not work from the Netbook, it gives error message saying "Bad Name" Attempts to delete files from PC as well do not work, it says corrupted files. Attempt to delete the directory the files are in, also results in error messages.
Is there a way to delete those files without reformatting the CF card? Am I doing something wrong which results in the above errors?
Thanks and regards,
Koi Hin

Subject: C700 vs. Sony Vaio PCG-C1VN
Hi Peter,
And I'll take a stab at some of your answers<g>.
>I fail to see the excitement being generated by the Sharp C700. It is only
slightly smaller than a Sony Vaio PCG-C1VN.
>> Slightly smaller? The C700 weighs in at about 225g, while the C1VN weighs
in at four times as much at 0.98 kg (data from
http://www.transmeta.com/everywhere/products/notebooks/sony/vaio_c1vn.html).
>>So while the C700 is definitely a machine which can be comfortably carried
in one's shirt or pants pocket, the C1VN is not. For many users, that alone
is the overriding consideration.
Comfortably carry in your shirt pocket? The Revo comes in at 1.45 ounces.
The C700 is just about 8 ounces. The dimensions are also almost double that
of the Revo. I rather doubt that the C700 qualifies as being something you'd
carry in your shirt pocket.
>2. This is a full-fledged Windows laptop running Windows 2000 Professional.
>>That's fine and dandy if you're a Windows fan. I have Windows at work, and
it's ok, but I've always >>preferred to run non-Windows machines at home.
That's why I use EPOC/PalmOS instead of Windows/WinCE. So the C700 lets
users keep a distance from Windows at home, while with the C1VN you're
totally locked in to the whims of Redmond - not a pleasant thought for some
people.
> News flash here, but whether you can describe them as "fans" or not, the
vast majority of people do run computers with Windows. You may have an
aversion to our towheaded boy from Redmond but those are the facts.
>3. I know that there are some Linux fanatics who will think the C700 is
really cool but the software base for Linux is simply not there compared to
Windows.
>>True, but most of the basic software is already included with the C700,
and many third-party apps for Linux are freeware.
>And the description of the basic software included in the C700 is pretty
weak, especially compared to a Psion or even a Palm, for that matter. One of
the problems with Psion was that it was a 'strange" OS to most people. I
think Linux is, and will be for a long time, in that same category.
>4. With the Sony, you don't have to worry about synchronizing with Outlook
because it's already there.
>>A non-issue for me, since I don't use Outlook.
With the operative phrase being "for me". How many people have switched away
from Psion because of its syncing problems with Outlook? Like it or not,
Outlook is the defacto standard in the corporate world and StarOffice isn't
going to replace it.
>>5. Same with Word and Excel.
See my comments above. Most of the world does use Word and Excel so 100%
compatibility is a very important feature for them
>6. The only downside is the lack of instant on.
>>I wouldn't even consider purchasing a machine without instant on.
Once again the operative phrase being "I wouldn't." Win2k and Win XP boot in
less than 30 seconds, not a huge problem for many people.
>7. I can buy one of these right now at Costco for $1299 with no worries
about Japanese localizations and convoluted warranty problems.
>>The C700 is $699, the C1VN is $1299. I understand Dynamism does the
localization and offers excellent warranty service, so this is not really an
issue. $699 is a lot for a small machine, but it seems to me that $1299 is
much worse.
And who exactly is Dynamism and how well are they capitalized? How are their
repair facilities? What is their timetable for localization and are they
supported by Sharp in this effort? Seems to me we've already been through
one undercapitalized company that never quite managed to deliver all they
promised. Sony, although they have their faults, is probably going to be
around a while. I'll concede the price difference but how firm is that $699
price? Has anyone actually bought one for that price yet? I'd also argue
that, for less than twice the price for the Sony, you're getting way more
than twice the capabilities of the C700.
>8. If I'm going to buy something that's the size of small laptop, then I'll
get a real laptop, not another PDA. Now, if the C700 had some thing like
10-12 hours battery life, I'd likely take a second look. Right now, it seems
to have most of the problems of a laptop and none of the advantages.
>>Hmm.... size of a small laptop? The C700 fits in a pocket (is 4x lighter
than the C1VN), it isn't tainted by Microsoft, it has instant on, offers
Office compatibility, there's lots of free software available, and it's half
the price of the C1VN. Plus it can be used either in PDA mode or in keyboard
mode.
I think you'd still need a pretty big shirt pocket. The tainted by Microsoft
comment is too tiresome to comment on. There's also a bunch of free software
for Windows - in fact, I would bet that there are many times more free
programs for Windows than all the programs for Linux put together. And your
size, weight, and price calculations start to get closer to the Sony once
you factor in an extra battery and/or extra charger so you can get more than
even the claimed four hour battery life of the C700. Even the Revo will get
you through a few days of use before it needs recharging. The whole appeal
of a PDA is lost on me if I can't even get through a normal business day
without a recharge. At least with a real laptop, I know that comes with the
territory. Oh, and I can't wait to see the hinge problems that develop with
the whole folding aspect of the C700.
Regards, Jim

I am lookng for an accounting program for a small retail flower business that I can use on my S7. My requirements would be for Accounts receivables/payables, Cash flow, Overdue bills and payments. Just a simple, basic program is needed.
I currently use Quickbooks on pc for this but would like to move everything over to my S7. Does anyone have suggestions?
Many thanks,
