Dear Keith,
I too own a Mbook and a Sandisk 256Mb! fortunately for me I have not encountered your problem before.
I'm sure others on this list will give you more expert advise. But in my case, I would like to suggest exchanging for a new card. If that still doesnt work you can always try other options.
Warm regards,

Owen,
At least here in the US, the upload speed is artificially limited to 53k.
There's no reason why you couldn't get speeds of up to 128k over regular
landlines and a modem but the FCC has limited the speed because it would
take too much bandwidth on out (mostly) copper phone lines. I expect as more
and more of these are replaced by fiber optics we'll see this artificial
limit lifted and be able to get high speeds from standard modems.

Rolf,
Can you point me to the penal code section for any of the countries you
named that would make it a criminal offense to transmit a link to a web site
obtained from public information? There are some pretty draconian laws in
the US here regarding child pornography and even transmitting a link to a
child porn site that was obtained from something like Google wouldn't be
illegal. Admittedly, I know nothing about the laws in the countries you
named but I am a part-time police officer in California and find it
difficult to believe any country would treat this as a criminal act.

Jim,
And you were logged on to your CompuServe account when you sent the message?
This seems very strange since Earthlink shouldn't have even been in the
loop. I've sent BCC's through CompuServe with no problem but I had to be
logged on to my CompuServe account. Earthlink wouldn't even know you exist
if everything was going the CompuServe POP3 server. It sounds like something
else is wrong here.

In some cases it can be under German law. I read this today in the May edition of PCGo magazine. They'v printed a lawyer's opinion about searching in the internet for registration numbers and the crackers' serial number database Serials 2000.
Mistakes in my translation are mine - the original is in German (of course)
In the ase where a person has purchased a shareware program, and finds when they wish to re-install the program that they can no longer find the registration code. Before taking using a l;ist o serial numbers such as those contained in the "Serials 2000" database, they should irst colntact the propgram author, giv their poof of purchase, and request a new registration number.
If this request receives no response after about two weeks, then the program purchaser is entitled to take ny action necessary to enable them to run the program. Specifically, they are free to search in the Internet for a registration code, and use this to install the program. They should mak sure they keep their original poof of purchase, in case it is needed in future.
PCGo magazine 5/03, page 44, original opinion by Chritian Czirnich, attorney.
While this is very far from a 'pirates' charter' I wonder if it could be applied to the case of people who paid Handango for this software but have not received any registration keys.

Dear Gary,
<< From the time the first modems came out, there was a very fast move to higher speed modems until the industry came out with 56kbps modems. But why does it seem now like the development has stopped and we don't see any news about modem speeds greated than 56k for desktop or internal PC modems? >>
The reason is that at some point between your telephone wall jack and the telephone exchange (the exact point differs) the analog signal is digitized, resulting in a digital data rate of 56kbps (which is what's passed between the telephone exchanges). No matter what amount of smart encoding is applied to the analog signal in the modem, you cannot exceed that bit rate. And believe me, 56k modems do some VERY fancy encoding in order to increase throughput on telephone lines with all kinds of different electrical noise or distortion!
Of course, a pure digital signal (ISDN) would be much easier to work with, but that's not the way most of the world's telephone lines are configured. Interestingly, when you go to the higher speeds of ADSL, you need to reintroduce much the same fancy encoding behind the scenes in order to pass the data at all; a pure digital signal is distorted too much. Remember, this is on a maybe 30 year old simple copper wire with no shielding etc. (it's a miracle it works at all).
So in a way, ADSL may be considered the next development step beyond 56k modems.

Mac data will have a data and Finder fork in OS up to 9.x.
OSX is Unix-based.
There is no problem I am aware of in data-exchange. The Mac will read any format and format any media. Imo you'd better format your HD w. the Win default (whether on the Mac or the IBM-compatible).
As MP3 and .jpg (as well as .pdf, .gif a.o.) are not platform-specific, you should have no problem. Some programs require docs to be exported for the other platform. Otoh it is irrelevant for any practical purpose I'm aware of whether you save .tif "for Windows" or "for Apple" - both are readable on any platform. The Mac comes with the capability of converting some office app's documents to/from Win (AppleWorks).
There seems to be a sporadic major problem transferring Psion data to both Mac (I am a Mac user). It concerns two things.
1- Transferring Psion System data (to Mac): CF data structure will become corrupt. The Mac may hang while copying, thus possibly damaging the Finder's data structure as well.
2- Tampering with the invisible data the Mac Finder writes on any medium will damage the file structure in the exchange process.
Occasionally, if switched often between Mac/Psion, CF cards will become corrupt. Keep backups. Avoid using Psion backup-CFs on both platforms.
Note:
Damage to hardware is NOT a danger (just reformat) but data are lost. Similar corruption has been reported for IBMs.
No idea why this happens. The subject came up several times here. I understand it has sth. to do with the way document names are treated by the Finder/Psion file systems.
best,
vlad a.

Perhaps it will NOT help (if you have some problem with your setup), but these values look very STRANGE for me:
- my S/N level is always >50db
- av. signal level >100 db
- av. noise <10 db
considering these strong noise levels I suggest you 3 solutions:
1/ decrease the noise level (even if you will be able to connect, such background noise can be harmful for your health and other gadgets)
2/ change channel on the access point (it can dramatically change the signal level), and change its position
3/ take back the Tx rate to 1 or 2 Mb, slower rates tolerate worse environment.
> Hostname (my SSID)
NOT AT ALL! This is the name, your netBook is presented to the server (usually netBook, or Crookes etc.)
> AP density high Transmit rate 11 Mbps
How many AP have you got, if only 1, i would suggest "low density"
And Take back the Tx rate to minimum.

OK, I will get flaming answers, but try "0 ms", when you activate power management (I met a card, which really went to sleep :)

Who is this guy on .0.1 anyway? Isn't it possible that it sits on .2.1? Or rather 2.100?

It gives us a lot of chances:
Have you successfully pinged the router from the VAIO?
Have you checked all router and AP setup from VAIO web browser? (IP address, channels, subnet masks, WEP, etc.)
Haven't you restricted Lucent MAC in the AP?
Have you downloaded NetUtils for EPOC vs.0.99?

My own use is very unpredictable. Sometimes I can be using my S7 on mains for long periods, other times on battery to the point where the icon turns red and the machine switches off. Much more frequently though, it's 2 or 3 hours on battery then a spell on mains power. I also try to make sure the battery is fully topped up by leaving it connected to mains for 3 hours whenever I get the chance. My battery is still the original one supplied with my S7 (now over three years old) and it still seems to work as well as when it was new. I'm thinking of getting a spare unit for the same reasons as you. Does anyone know how much these replacement units cost? Also, how long are these units supposed to last?

I used a CF reader between mac and PC and it worked perfectly with .jpg and all sorts of non platform specific files, even psion files, the time the problem arises is when you put the CF card in a reader attached to a Mac after having the disk in the psion and copying files to it. So if the CF cards are not going in a psion then moving between Mac and PC I found worked well. If going to a psion then go one way from the mac to the psion only once and not back the other way. I have heard that some people have not had the trouble I and others experienced but have not isolated why that is. I used to have a CF card I used only for moving files from the mac to the PC and would format after each use to avoid the troubles.

Please correct me if I am mistaken Rick but I feel Rolf may have misunderstood. I read your posting to mean that the location on the web was a public access not that the information contained in the site is freely and legally a public access. Analogy would be me putting a poster up on a lamp post with confidential information on it. the posting is public domain with information available to the public, this does not mean that you were inferring that the information contained in the posting is (legally) public information. This is not in anyway meant as an endorsement of disseminating information on how to obtain access to private or confidential information, it is merely a comment on what you were referring to about "public information", referring to the website not the information on the website.
I hope I have not got the wrong end of the stick here, but that is how I read your posting.

your setup looks correct to me but did you check, whether DHCP really works? The NetStatRF utility has a TCP/IP screen that should detail the IP address in use. On the other hand, you can query your AP for active connections and assigned addresses. My Netgear MR314 has an option

No way! That would dump a lot of 5mx users like me who have invested in large CF cards. Not only will we have to invest again in storage media, but in many cases we will also have chosen other CF hardware like digital cameras which will no longer be compatible with the palmtop. Also, CF is the cheapest flash media per megabyte and this is important to some of us. What I would like to see is full spec CF with support for modems, network cards and other CF stuff, but unless the machine had a lot of onboard RAM, there would have to be a way of having both a CF storage card and a CF peripheral connected at the same time.
> Completely remove the serial interface and chipset,
The serial interface is very important to me. I use it amongst other things for connecting to my GPS and this is one of the primary functions of my 5mx.
> externally attach the Stylus,
I've already lost too many to bear thinking about. This would make it worse, and as the stylus would not be any smaller, the resultant lump in my pocket would be the same as if it was inside the machine.
> make it Bluetooth or better yet, WiFi
BlueTooth, yes. Wifi would be handy too (I don't need it), but it isn't an alternative to BlueTooth which can be used to connect to mobile phones.
I don't really see the idea of redesigning within the constraints of the 5mx form factor as very realistic. To be able to design anything worthwhile, it would be far better to start with a clean sheet and aim for a similar size and basic design, the key elements being the keyboard and screen (same size with the option of colour). One way of getting more stuff into the same size would be to put the hinges right at the back. To avoid the unit tipping over when using the stylus (like some CE palmtops), it might have a small pull out support at the back which could appear automagically when the screen was opened.

As far as I remember, it can be done in Merlin, but as I try to make my macros compatible with all macro launchers, I've never actually done it. However, as the CoCoPaPa macros are distributed with source code, it is simple enough to include them as procedures within your own source code.

Re.: Multiple ISP Problem - You should not have a problem, I use regularly Demon internet, Freeserve as well as Compuserve on my S7. Go to account settings in the email program, choose account details and open the account you want to send with. Tick the position "set as default account". Alternatively, when writing the message do Ctrl-Shift-A and choose with which account you want to send the message.
